Episode 119 Today, we are joined by paleontologist, Dr. Mary Schweitzer. She is professor in the department of biological sciences at North Carolina State University. She is also a research curator for paleontology at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Her research interests include molecular paleontology, specifically the preservation and detection of original molecular fragments in well preserved fossil specimens. In 2005 she and her team shook the paleontology community when they reported finding soft tissue preserved in a 68-million-year-old T-Rex femur. Since that initial find, her team has unearthed mounting evidence that soft tissues, such as blood vessels, collagen and other proteins, can survive more than 66 million years of degradation. Fun fact, on one of her fossil hunts she spent three days in the field walking around on a broken leg because she didn't want to miss out on anything. Episode 173 – 10 Facts Every Christian Needs to Know 1 Welcome to Anchored by Truth brought to you by Crystal Sea Books. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” The goal of Anchored by Truth is to encourage everyone to grow in the Christian faith by anchoring themselves to the secure truth found in the inspired, inerrant, and infallible word of God. Script: Then God said: Let there be light, and there was light. God saw that the light was good. God then separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” Evening came, and morning followed—the first day. Genesis, chapter 1, verses 3 through 5, New American Bible Revised Edition ******** VK: Hello! I’m Victoria K. Welcome to Anchored by Truth brought to you by Crystal Sea Books. We’re excited to be with you today as we begin a new series on Anchored by Truth. So, to announce the series and tell us why we are doing it, we have RD Fierro in the studio. RD is an author and the founder of Crystal Sea Books. RD, you’ve entitled this series “10 Facts Every Christian Needs to Know.” This ought to be fascinating. I’m not sure how many facts there are that pertain to the Christian faith but way more than 10. How in the world are you going to pick 10 from the hundreds or thousands of facts that are relevant to those who put their trust in Christ? RD: Well, I’d first like to start by expressing my gratitude for everyone who is joining us here today whether on the radio broadcast or the podcast. And you are absolutely right that there are hundreds, thousands, or perhaps hundreds of thousands of facts that shape and fill the Christian faith. And that is the one of the points that we want to make by doing this series. The Christian faith is a faith of facts. VK: Well, that’s an interesting phrase – “a faith of facts.” That phrase alone starts to raise questions. I think most people would see or draw a distinction between faith and facts. RD: And I think you’re right about that. Many people in our world think that if we’re talking about faith and facts we’re talking about two different categories of ideas. But that is a modern fiction. The great theologians through the ages have always recognized that authentic, saving faith has three dimensions. Authentic, saving faith consists of content, assent to the content, and trust in that content. Well, the content of authentic, saving faith must consist of facts or it’s not faith at all. It might be gullibility, credulity, or imaginative fantasy but it is not faith. If someone says I believe moon fairies visit me at night and sprinkle glow berries at the foot of my bed, that’s not faith. And if someone chooses to label that kind of belief as “faith” it’s certainly not what the Bible means, or classic Christian theology means, when we use the term. VK: And while critics might assert that we are playing word games there is a very concrete distinction between Biblical faith and the “glow berry” kind. Christian faith always begins with and ends with the truth. Truth is that which corresponds to reality. We make this point regularly on Anchored by Truth. It is a critical distinction. Belief in moon fairies and glow berries might give a small child a distraction but it won’t help an adult struggling with addiction, or financial troubles, or a sick loved one, or comfort with a desperate illness. Authentic, saving faith will help with all of those situations and a great many more. RD: So, when we say that Christianity is a faith with facts we are saying that it is a faith grounded in the real world – in time and place – but it is nevertheless a faith that recognizes that there is a real realm that is outside of the created order that is perceived through the senses. We know the reality of that other realm from the Bible which is why we must become so familiar with the Bible that we can use its truth to guide us through our lives in the created order until Jesus brings us safely into that unseen realm at his side. VK: So, during this series you want to give people a group of facts that will help them reinforce their confidence in their faith and in the Bible. You don’t see this series so much as evangelistic tool – though it could help with that – as much as you do helping believers fend off the world’s attacks on their faith. RD: Yes. Classically the believer’s enemies are the world, the flesh, and the devil. Well, in the modern “world” the world’s enmity with Christ has been steadily escalating. The contemporary reliance on instantaneous and mass media has allowed false messages to move instantly and continuously. And one of the messages with which Christians are bombarded today is the whole notion of what is sometimes termed “deep time.” VK: Deep time is essentially the idea that the universe and the earth are billions of years old. The secular world must have deep time in order to maintain the illusion that the General Theory of Evolution is plausible. Evolution needs billions of years of time to change bacteria into biologists. The only supposed creative force evolution has is beneficial mutation - in other words the random interaction of unthinking matter. To make the whole evolutionary hypothesis plausible the scheme needs lots of time. Lots of time is necessary so that lots of those random, chaotic, interactive events can take place. They need untold trillions of those interactions in the hope that a few of them will produce a living being so complex that the code that describe its construction can contain 3 billion data elements. RD: The task to turn an amoeba into an anthropologist is even more formidable than just having the 3 billion base pairs that comprise human DNA properly organized and functioning. When DNA was first discovered it was thought to be similar to other chemical components of living beings. The initial idea was that somehow the chemistry controlled the biology. VK: But we now know with absolute certainty that the chemistry of DNA is not sufficient to explain its operation within the human body or any other living creature for that matter. Just as the chemistry of ink and paper does not control the message printed on the paper, the chemistry of DNA does not control the messages it provides. DNA is far more akin to a language that conveys information to other chemical structures and its complexity goes well beyond its numerical attributes. RD: Yes. And we’re going to get more into that in a future show. But for today I just want to stick with the issue of time and specifically that there is abundant scientific evidence that deep time does not exist. The best science tells us, in fact, that the Biblical time frame is far more reasonable that the secular alternatives. So, the first fact that every Christian needs to know is that science confirms that the universe and earth are thousands of years old, not millions or billions. VK: Ok. That’s a very bold proclamation given that probably 95% of the people who call themselves scientists would probably disagree with it. RD: I recognize that. And it would be a lot easier for us at Anchored by Truth to simply go along with conventional thinking. But as we started out saying Christianity is a faith of facts and the facts of science are not helpful to a billions of years old earth. VK: I think we better get into some specific examples of what you’re thinking about. RD: I agree. So, today we’re going to talk about 3 specific lines of evidence that demonstrate that the earth is far more likely thousands of years old than billions of years old. And the 3 lines we’re going to talk about are all mentioned in an article on the Creation Ministries International website entitled “age of the earth.” VK: And we are going to put a link to that article on the podcast notes that accompany the podcast version of this show. So, if your podcast app supports written notes you can just go to them and find a link. If not, the Creation Ministries International website is creation.com and you can just search for “age of the earth.” RD: Right. So, the article we’re linking to contains references to these 3 lines of evidence but the article itself actually contains 101 forms of evidence that earth is far younger than normally thought. VK: We don’t have time on one of our shows to go through 101 lines of evidence, do we? RD: Nope. So, I just wanted to pick a few of the many, many lines of evidence just to give our audience a sample of why they don’t need to accept the proclamation of the world that directly challenges a straightforward reading of the book of Genesis. VK: So, what is the first line of evidence you want to discuss? RD: The first thing that demonstrates that the conventional understanding of the age of the earth is in error is that biologists and paleontologists have recovered blood cells, blood vessels, and proteins from dinosaur remains that were supposedly millions of years old. But even the scientist, who made the discovery, Mary Schweitzer, has admitted that contemporary science has no explanation for how such tissue could have survived intact for 65 million years which was the supposed age of the bone. VK: And since that first discovery of dinosaur soft tissue in the mid-1990’s many other similar discoveries have followed. The first discovery of dinosaur soft tissue was in a T. Rex bone but since then they have found intact soft tissue in other species as well. RD: Right. The Tyrannosaurus Rex bone that contained the first soft tissue discovered was supposedly 65 million years old. But then they discovered the protein collagen in the bone of a hadrosaur which was purportedly 80 million years old. That has been followed by the discovery of the protein osteocalcin in an Iguanodon bone that is thought to be 120 million years old – twice as old as the T. Rex. VK: The dilemma for the scientists is how could such soft tissue have survived for those enormous amounts of time? In his book, The Greatest Hoax on Earth, Dr. Jonathan Sarfati says, “Yet analysis of collagen stability shows that it would last only 2.7 [million years] at freezing point under the most favorable preservation conditions. At 10 [degrees centigrade] the limit was 180,000 years and 15,000 years at 20 [degrees centigrade]; [it is normally thought] dinosaurs were supposed to live in a warm climate.” RD: So, the discovery of soft tissue in dinosaur bones, and not just in one but in many, poses a huge challenge for conventional time periods. But it poses no challenge for Biblical time frames. While Biblical scholars are not uniform on their dating schedules it’s fair to say that most scholars believe the earth is about 6,500 years old. But let’ just say that they were off 1 or 2 thousand years. That still does not pose a problem for the preservation of the soft tissue. The analyses of the preservation possibilities even under the warmer conditions allows easily for the tissue to be preserved for the Biblical time frame. And it is reasonable to say that the availability of the dinosaur soft tissue is far more consistent with the time frames laid out in the Bible than with any of the secular speculations. VK: At this point we should remind the listeners that whether the dinosaur soft tissue was thousands of years old or millions no one alive on the earth today was there to see it. So, all that any scientist, or anyone else for that matter, can do is to look at current evidence and see how that evidence fits in with a particular hypothesis or theory. And all scientists, whether they are Christians or not, look at evidence through a lens comprised of a set of starting axioms. The evidence might be consistent with the expectations that arise from those starting axioms or it might not be. What we are pointing out here is that, contrary to popular belief, the preservation of soft tissue from dinosaurs creates many additional questions for the conventional time frames but none at all for Biblical ones. So, what’s next? RD: Well, another conundrum for the conventional idea that the earth and universe are billions of years old is what is often termed “the faint young sun paradox.” VK: A “young sun paradox” – this should be interesting. RD: It is. Let’s start out by noting that one commonly accepted idea for how the sun generates energy is by nuclear fusion – the combination of hydrogen atoms into helium atoms deep within the core of the sun. According to Einstein’s famous equation, E=mc2, as the thermonuclear fusion occurs massive amounts of energy are released. But the combination of multiple hydrogen atoms into few helium atoms takes up less space. So, over billions of years the sun would shrink in size but it would increase in brightness. As the sun increased in brightness its energy output would increase meaning the energy that would hit the earth would increase. VK: So, the “faint young sun” means that if the sun-earth system were really 4.5 billion years old as conventional dating asserts the sun would have been far less bright billions of years ago. It would have been “fainter” in the earth’s sky 4 billion years ago than it is today. A fainter, weaker sun would mean a lot cooler earth. So, the question is how much cooler would the earth have been? RD: Reasonable estimates say the earth would have received anywhere from 20% – 30% less sunlight than it does today. VK: And how much cooler would the earth have been with that much less sunlight? RD: The current average temperature of the earth is about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. With 25% less sunlight the average temperature of the earth would have been below freezing – about 25 degrees Fahrenheit. In other words with a sun that is 20% to 30% less bright the entire globe would have been glaciated – essentially a solid ball of ice. That certainly would not have been a condition in which any kind of life would have developed much less spread widely and begun to create the kind of biodiversity we see on the earth today. VK: In fact, most scientists believe that the primordial world was much warmer than it is today. Whenever we see movies with dinosaur scenes in them we are always regaled with lush, tropical vegetation surrounding them. But, of course, there is a “faint young sun” paradox only if the earth is billions of years old. If the earth is only several thousands of years old the way the Bible tells us the paradox never arises. There is simply not sufficient time for the sun to have been any different than it is today. Well, I’m sure secular scientists are aware of this difficulty so how do they respond? RD: The most common response is that the level of greenhouse gases in the primordial earth’s atmosphere was much, much higher than today. This higher level of greenhouse gas provided a much thicker “blanket” than our current atmosphere does. But the problem is that the level of greenhouse gases needed to compensate for the lower luminosity is hundreds of times the present atmospheric levels of such gases. Not only is that an inconceivable proposition but according to analyses information from so-called “ancient soils” does not give any indication of dramatically greater levels of carbon dioxide which is the most abundant greenhouse gas. Recently, newer solutions have been proposed involving only slightly higher levels of greenhouse gases but with a lower level of planetary albedo. Albedo is the reflective level of the atmosphere. With lower albedo more sunlight would penetrate the atmosphere and keep things warmer. VK: Does this solve the problem? RD: Not really. The models that have been proposed use a one-dimensional form of climate modeling but all responsible climate models use a three-dimensional model. In our podcast notes we’ll link to a couple of articles on creation.com but this a comment from one of the articles entitled The Faint Young Sun Paradox and the Age of the Solar System. “…any climate model, other than a three-dimensional general circulation model with a realistic ocean, biosphere, and cryosphere (the snow/ice component), is inaccurate. For example, such a one-dimensional model ignores important feedbacks, such as the powerful ice albedo feedback. As snow and ice increase, the albedo increases to cause further cooling.” VK: Ok. Well, just to remind everyone today we’re discussing the first fact in our new series “10 facts every Christian needs to know.” And the first fact that you believe all Christians need to firmly grasp is that there is abundant scientific evidence that confirms that the universe and earth are thousands of years old, not millions or billions of year old. And the reason this fact is so important is because the General Theory of Evolution needs billions of years to perform its magic of turning colliding molecules into computer scientists. Without these billions of years – deep time as it is sometimes called – even the evolutionists admit their paradigm wouldn’t work. So, the evidence we’re providing today demonstrates that that deep time just isn’t reflected in what we see in the created order that surrounds us. So, we have time to do one more line of evidence. Where do you want to go now? RD: Let’s talk about what is termed “lunar recession.” After the first missions to the moon we were able to place mirrors on the moon that allow us to bounce laser pulses off them. We can then measure very precisely the length of time it takes the returning photons to reach the earth and thereby determine with a high degree of precision the distance between the earth and the moon. So, we’ve done that and we now know that the moon is moving away from the earth about 1.5 inches per year. VK: Now if the earth-moon system is only several thousand years old as the Bible tells us one and a half inches a year is no big deal. But, if the earth-moon system is billions of years old all that changes. And the conventional understanding is that the earth is 4.5 billion years old. Right? RD: Right. In fact, lunar recession means that in a system billions of years old the moon would have been a lot closer to the earth than it is today. The calculations about the movement of the moon place a maximum age on the earth-moon system at about 1.4 billion years old. At that point the moon would have been below the Roche limit. The Roche limit is the distance from a central body, such as a planet, inside of which orbiting debris cannot coalesce. In other words, the moon would have been torn apart if had been below the Roche limit. As a result of this various theories have been proposed to explain how the earth and moon have arrived in their current configuration in such precise balance. But none of these theories such as the “capture” theory or adjusting the earth’s tidal parameters resolve the problem. VK: We have to remember that the moon is the principle cause of tidal action on the earth and it is well understood that tidal action is important to the earth’s eco-system. If the moon had been a lot closer to the earth in the past there would have been enormous tides – tides so large they would have swept over huge portions of the land. That would have been devastating for the formation of any land dwelling creatures. But we also know that tides are important for keeping the boundary between the earth and land healthy and beneficial for life as it exists. The harmony between the earth and moon is an essential part of making life on this earth possible. RD: Again, lunar recession in an earth-moon system thousands of years old is not a problem. The relative position change of the two bodies is negligible. But try to take that back millions or billions of years and now there are lots of difficulties that arise that must be explained away. This is a problem for science because the mantra of contemporary science is uniformitarianism. The present is the key to the past. VK: But the present is not the key to the past for an earth-moon system where the current recession rate of the moon puts a limit on the age of the system that rules out evolutionary time scales. RD: Yes. So, these are just three of the lines of evidence that show that good science supports an age for the earth that is consistent with the Bible but a challenge for the most widely held conventional beliefs. Now, notice I’m being careful about how I say this. Present empirical observations cannot “prove” the age of the earth. Only an eyewitness to events could do that. All empirical observations are made by observers in the present who must integrate the information they get from current observations into what we might receive from recorded events and then interpret that information. But notice that the three lines of evidence that we have mentioned today pose no problems for a Biblical timeframe but do so for evolutionary schedules. And these are just 3 of the lines of evidence out of the 101 lines that are contained in the article we first mentioned. And that article, even with the 101 points of evidence it covers, is illustrative and not exhaustive. The big point – the fact every Christian needs to know is that there is abundant scientific evidence that the earth is only thousands of years old, not billions of years old. And this fact alone destroys any possibility of evolution as it is normally envisioned. Evolution needs deep time. But empirical observations, even when aligned with a typical uniformitarian perspective, do not provide deep time. Empirical observations just pose one problem after another and each solution that is proposed to resolve them tends to raise more problems that must be resolved. None of that is necessary for those who simply trust the Bible’s historicity. VK: Well, as you said the only way to know when the earth was created would be from an eyewitness and that’s what the Bible provides. God was there at the beginning and the Bible is His testimony to the world of what He did. It’s up to us to decide whether we will accept His testimony to us or continue to shove Him aside in favor of our manufactured idols such as evolution or deep time. There is really no need to do that scientifically despite what our culture continually insists. As we always do we want to close with prayer. Today let’s listen to a prayer of adoration for the Holy Spirit who is the One who hovered over the water and testifies to us that it was God who is the one and only Creator of everything. ---- PRAYER OF ADORATION FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT VK: Before we close we’d like to remind our audience that a lot of our radio episodes are linked together in series of topics so if they missed any episodes in this series or if they just want to hear one again, all of these episodes are available on your favorite podcast app. To find them just search on “Anchored by Truth by Crystal Sea Books.” If you’d like to hear more, try out crystalseabooks.com where “We’re not perfect but our Boss is!” (Opening Bible Quotes from the New American Bible Revised Edition) Genesis, chapter 1, verses 3 through 5, New American Bible Revised Edition Age of the earth - creation.com Young sun paradox - creation.com The young faint Sun paradox and the age of the solar system - creation.com The moon's recession and age - creation.com Paleozoic Corals and Lunar Recession - creation.com C14 dinos - creation.com
The Genesis Paradise Lost movie from Eric Hovind's Creation Today is available on home video around the world. The movie proudly declares a message of young earth creationism, using stunning visual effects and interviews with the likes of Bodie Hodge, Chad Hovind, Charles Jackson, Danny Faulkner, David Menton, Georgia Purdom, Jeremy Lyon, John Baumgardner, Ken Ham, Ray Comfort, Terry Mortenson, Tommy Mitchell, and Voddie Baucham.As the movie is packed with scientific claims, but not enough screen time to go in-depth, this series will endeavor to go slowly through each claim and take a careful look at each and how it contributes to our view of God.Part eight looks at approximately 61 minute to 63 minute mark of the movie.Thanks to Dr. Mary Schweitzer, Steve McRae, and narrator Tony Reed.Dr. Mary Schweitzer Great Debate Community Hangout (Steve McRae)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDoRqFyWpekScience of Genesis Paradise Lost playlisthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W4g9BYYimU&list=PLpdBEstCHhmXRs5GQqgHHPh53S3vRddOdGenesis Paradise Lost channelhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC86LFsm_pQuL4D0P0zkQgngFollow me athttp://www.patreon.com/paulogiahttp://www.twitter.com/paulogia0http://www.facebook.com/paulogia0https://teespring.com/stores/paulogiahttps://discord.gg/BXbv7DSSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/paulogia)
Do recent finds of dinosaur soft tissue mean that dinosaurs lived only 6000 years ago, not millions of years ago? Eric Hovind's Creation Today show welcomes guests Brian Thomas and Dan Biddle to discuss the so-called soft tissue found in dinosaur fossils, largely thanks to scientist Mary Schweitzer.While Eric Hovind gawks, his hosts spitfire 14 claims, designed to overwhelm a layperson with familiar-sounding-but-not-understood scienc-y words to create the impression of overwhelming evidence.In actual fact, each of the 14 will be merely minor variations of the same loop… a deliberate overstatement of a scientific find, an appeal to an imagined timer that somehow establishes maximum survival time regardless of conditions or circumstance, while leads to a short-earth conclusion drawn as clumsily as an angry toddler's fridge-bait. I'm in the studio today with RD Fierro, author and Founder Crystal Sea Books as we wrap up the series we called “A Flood of Truth.” RD, would you like to say a word of greeting and give us a little preview of what we are going to hear about in this final episode of our series? RD: Greetings to all the Anchored by Truth listeners. Well, in our last episode of Anchored by Truth we began our review of a baker's dozen of facts that listeners can rely upon to assure themselves that the Bible's account of Noah and the flood is literal history. We understand that in this day and time that skepticism of the Bible's historicity is widespread. That's one of the biggest reasons we do Anchored by Truth – to help listeners understand that that skepticism is quite often not grounded in evidence or reason. We also understand that one part of the Bible that is frequently attacked by the skeptic is the first few chapters of Genesis – which is of course where we find the story of Noah and the flood – in chapters 6 through 9. That's why we wanted to do this series on Noah – to reexamine the evidence that supports the Bible's historicity. So, in our wrap-up we're going back over 13 data points that listeners can absorb quickly and easily to assure themselves that the Bible's account of Noah, the ark, and the flood is trustworthy. VK: And by extension that other parts of Genesis – and the entire Bible for that matter – are equally trustworthy. We know that a lot, probably most, of the listeners do trust the Bible. But we also know that in today's world people are often so overwhelmed with the details of life that it can be hard for them to find time to assemble the facts and evidence that can reinforce their faith in the Bible. That's what we want to do on Anchored by Truth. We want to look at the Bible – and many of the criticisms that are directed against it from the standpoint of an honest layman. And we want to find out whether a reasoned analysis of available evidence supports the Bible's truth claims or the critic's. When people do so we think that they find that evidence from a wide variety of disciplines provides overwhelming support of the Bible's trustworthiness RD: Yes. So last time we went through the first 7 of our baker's dozen of data points. Today we want to go through the last 6 data points. VK: So, just as a brief review the first 3 data points are that the Bible's description of the ark show that the ark had the size and strength to carry a huge cargo of animals, their food, and Noah's family. Even when you use conservative estimates the ark had the capacity to transport at least 19,000 sheep sized animals. Also, the ark's 6-to-1 ratio of length to width is the same basic design proportion used for modern, ocean going vessels so it could be expected to be stable even in rough waters. And, third, the interior and exterior coating of pitch not only sealed the ark against leaks but also improved its impact resistance against collisions with debris. Especially during the earliest parts of the flood the wind and waves would have been tossing huge amounts of vegetation being torn off the sinking lands. RD: Exactly. And data point 4 is that even the incidental details mentioned in the instructions given to Noah make sense. The opening below the roof would have helped manage the heat load and the 3 decks made sense from the standpoint of both cargo capacity and load management. VK: And data points 5, 6, and 7 have to do with the fact that there is abundant geological evidence that at one time there was water covering the surface of the entire globe and that that water moved enormous volumes of sediment and earth in exactly the way you would expect in the Biblical flood. Marine fossils are found in a limestone layer just below the summit of Mount Everest. There are layers of sedimentary rock found on every continent on earth and some of these layers are hundreds of feet thick and extend over thousands of miles. Finally, many geologists such as J. Harlan Bretz who is a recipient of the Geological Society of America's highest award acknowledge that there are canyons on many continents that were not carved gradually through the slow erosion of a particular river. Instead, they were carved suddenly, catastrophically by floods of unimaginable proportions. RD: Exactly. So, those are 7 of our 13 data points that listeners can return to when they hear assertions that the Bible's flood story is just a fictional morality tale. Data point 8 is that the earth's fossil beds contain abundant evidence of a past, sudden catastrophe that caused an immediate burial of both marine and land creatures. For instance, here is an exquisitely preserved fossil of an extinct marine reptile called an ichthyosaur. The mother ichthyosaur is shown having almost completed giving birth to a live infant—the beak of the young reptile is still inside mother's birth canal. If you find a fossil of an isolated tooth or shell, for example, it is not possible to say how quickly or slowly it formed. But there are countless examples of fossils like this one concerning which it is obvious that long time-spans could not have been involved. In this case, not only is the fossil exquisitely preserved, but the fact that mother and infant are 'trapped' in a not-yet-completed birth process makes it profoundly clear that both were rapidly overwhelmed by catastrophic burial, consistent with the world flood of Noah's day. It is, of course, not feasible that mother just lay on the bottom of the ocean floor giving birth for thousands of years while being slowly covered up by accumulating sediments! Unlike many other reptiles, ichthyosaurs gave birth to live young. This means that if the birth had been completed the youngster would have immediately gone to the surface for its first breath. VK: That's certainly a dramatic example that, at some point in the earth's past history, vast quantities of sediment were being swirled around in the oceans. If the bodies of the dead animals that became fossils had been exposed for any length of time fossils wouldn't have formed at all. So, fossils like that which have features so beautifully preserved must have been buried and hardened before they could be damaged by scavengers or decay. Is that the only fossil evidence that demonstrates the earth was subjected to a massive flood that covered the entire surface? RD: Definitely not. So, data point 9 is that there are large fossil beds that contain mixtures of marine animals and land animals. Since it is unlikely that these kinds of animals would have lived in close proximity to one another during life, their burial together suggests they were swept up in a common catastrophe and quickly deposited under a thick layer of protective sediment. The fact that marine and land animals were all quickly buried together strongly suggests the burial took place underwater. For instance, one of the richest fossil discoveries ever was made near a huge deposit of coal basin near Autun in France. Some of the fossils discovered in this deposit were saltwater marine creatures. Some were definitely freshwater dwellers (e.g. amphibious), and some were definitely land creatures such as spiders, scorpions, millipedes other insects and reptiles. This kind of mixing of creatures from widely separated regions could easily have occurred when the creatures were brought together by ultra-massive flooding. VK: And this kind of fossil bed where land and sea creatures are mixed isn't limited to that bed. Fossils discovered in Hell Creek rock formation in Montana contained not only the largest ever T. rex fossil but also the teeth of various species of small marine sharks. The T. rex fossil also contained intact soft tissue and protein. The discovery of soft tissue that was still “soft and stretchy” and intact proteins really poses a problem for the hypothesis that dinosaurs lived tens of millions of years ago. Even the chief of the team that first discovered the intact soft tissue, Dr. Mary Schweitzer has admitted there is no known way soft tissue could be intact after tens of millions of years. They also discovered proteins such as collagen, hemoglobin, osteocalcin, and tubulin. These are complex molecules that continually tend to break down to simpler ones. All of these discoveries are perfectly consistent with dinosaurs being around in Noah's time and the fossils being created by a worldwide flood. RD: Right. And data point 10 is that there are other features on the earth that point out at some time in the past there was a huge hydrological event that created vast deposits of vegetation that would be extremely hard to explain in any other way. In Australia there's an enormous coal deposit called the Latrobe Valley Coal Measures. The coal seams there occur within thick layers of clay, sand and basaltic lava, which together form a 2,300-foot sequence of rocks. These lie in a large, deep depression, called a ‘basin', shaped like a triangle that's almost 200 miles wide and long. Most of the basin lies under the ocean off the southern coast of Australia. Offshore the coal measures are estimated to be almost 3 miles thick. Latrobe Valley coal consists of a mass of very fine plant debris containing partly-decomposed plant remains. It is clear that a great quantity of plant material accumulated in the past to produce such huge deposits of coal. A worldwide, catastrophic flood is the easiest explanation for how so much vegetation could have accumulated in this pattern in one place. VK: But, of course, there are geologists who believe that a Biblical flood didn't cause the Latrobe Valley Coal Measures, aren't there. Some geologists believe that the coal deposits were created by an enormous swamp where plants just grew for hundreds of thousands of years and as they died they gradually accumulated in layers deep enough to form the coal. They say that the vegetation accumulated as peat in a swamp during ideal climatic and geologic conditions. They say the swamps formed on floodplains near the coast, which were slowly sinking and eventually inundated by the ocean. Isn't that a possibility? RD: It's a possibility but there are problems with this explanation. First, there is no sign of soil under the coal, as there would be if the vegetation grew and accumulated in a swamp. Instead, the coal rests on a thick layer of clay and there is contact edge between the coal and clay is so clean it could be a knife edge This kaolin clay is so pure that it could be used for high-class pottery. Furthermore, there are no roots penetrating the clay. Second, not only is there no soil, but the vegetation found in the coal is not the kind that grows in swamps today. Instead, it is mostly the kind that is found in mountain rainforests. The best match for the mix of vegetation in the coal occurs in the mountains of the western half of the island of New Guinea some 4,000–7,000 feet above sea level. Similar vegetation is also found in the mountains in Australia, Malaysia, New Caledonia and New Zealand. The kinds of plants that make up the coal did not grow in a swamp on a floodplain. Third, within the coal seams are pollen-rich layers up to 20 inches thick. It makes sense that the pollen was washed there by water, because flowing water would sort vegetation into its different components. The idea that such huge pollen-rich layers could gradually accumulate in a coastal swamp over long periods of time does not make sense. Finally, when the brown coal burns, it leaves hardly any ash behind. The ash produced from most of these coals ranges from 1.5–5%, which is less than the 3–18% ash in typical peat. The low ash is consistent with the vegetation being transported and washed by water, not with lying in a swamp for tens of thousands of years. Then there are a number of distinct volcanic ash layers that run horizontally through the coal. If the vegetation had grown in a swamp, these distinct ash layers would not be there. After each volcanic eruption, the volcanic texture of the ash would have been obliterated when the swamp plants recolonized the ash, turning it into soil. VK: And the Latrobe Valley Coal Measures is not the only feature we see on the face of the earth that points to a massive flood as its cause. But it's one that is easy to think about concretely and absorb readily. And listeners who would like to study this point more thoroughly can go to creation.com which is the website for Creation Ministries International. So, what is data point 11? RD: Data point 11 is that we see genetic evidence of the flood in the composition of the human population that's currently living on the earth. We can see this through what is known as mitochondria DNA. This is a limited set of DNA that is not found in a cell's nucleus but in the organelle that is the more-or-less the power plant of the cell which is called the mitochondrion. Mitochondria DNA is generally inherited only from our mothers. As such the mitochondria DNA distribution of the world's population can give us insight into our female ancestors. Well, genetic studies have shown that there are three main mitochondria lines of DNA present around the world. Evolutionists refer to these lines as “M,” “N,” and “R.” Evolutionists were surprised at the lack of diversity present in the mitochondrial lines but this evidence is entirely consistent with the Bible's flood account. VK: Yes. It's important to remember that all the people living today are descendants of Noah's 3 sons and their wives. So, the lines of mitochondrial DNA that would be present could only have come from one of the four women on the ark: Noah's wife or his 3 daughters-in-law. But the Bible never tells us that Noah had any daughters – only sons. Noah's sons would not have contributed to the mitochondrial descent lines. So, it reasonable to conclude that the 3 main mitochondrial DNA lines we see present on the earth today trace back to Noah's 3 daughters-in-law. Again, this is observational evidence that is consistent with the Bible's flood account. Listeners who would like to investigate this subject further should visit creation.com where there are several good articles on mitochondrial DNA or there's a discussion of the flood effect on mitochondrial DNA in chapter 19 of Dr. Jonathan Sarfati's commentary on Genesis called The Genesis Account. So, data point 11 is that even human genetics points out that at one point in the past there was a something that caused a bottleneck in the population. This bottleneck resulted in the preservation of three primary lines of mitochondrial DNA. And one simple explanation for how that happened is provided by the Bible's flood account. So, what about data point 12? RD: Data point 12 is what I call “the story of the story.” With any event as catastrophic as the Biblical flood you would expect the generation that experienced the event and the succeeding generations to repeat the story over and over. But of course, when the story is repeated it won't always remain the same. It will grow, be embellished, or just repeated erroneously. And that's what we see with the flood story. Some observers have counted almost 200 different variants on the flood story around the world and just about every culture on earth has one. VK: What are some of the best known of variants? RD: As we mentioned in our last episode, one of the best known of the variants and probably the one that most closely tracks the Biblical account is the Babylonian flood narrative. In the Babylonian narrative their Noah is called Utnapishtim. Utnapishtim is warned by a friendly god in advance that a great flood is coming and orders him to build an ark to save not only his own family but also a group of representative animals. The ark finally grounds on a mountain named Nisir in a mountain range northeast of Babylon. VK: But as we also mentioned last time, the design of Utnapishtim's ark reveals that the Biblical account is far more reasonable. In the Babylonian account the ark Utnapishtim built was a perfect cube with six decks. It goes without saying that - in complete opposition to the stability of the Biblical ark - a cube-shaped vessel would roll and capsize quite easily in open waters. Such a vessel could never have remained upright in the roiling seas that would have been present in the initial flood conditions. RD: Yes, and that same kind of lack of reasonability marks the other flood legends. An Ojibwa Indian legend from around Lake Superior tells of a great snow that fell one September at the beginning of time. A bag contained the sun's heat until a mouse nibbled a hole in it. The warmth spilled over, melting the snow and producing a flood that rose above the tops of the highest pines. Everyone drowned except for an old man who drifted about in his canoe rescuing animals. There is another Native American tribe, the Havasupai, attributes the Grand Canyon's carving to a catastrophic flood down the Colorado River that occurred when the god Ho-ko-ma-ta unleashed a tremendous rainstorm. A more benevolent god, Pu-keh-eh, put his daughter in a hollowed-out log to save her from the monstrous current. After the flood receded, she crawled out and became mother of all humanity. VK: So, it's easy to see that these kind of legends contain mythological elements that are quite different from the reserved and historical character of the Biblical account. Ok. What about your 13th data point? RD: My 13th data point is that the ice age is a good case where the Biblical flood account makes more sense than the conventional explanation. The Bible says that the cause of the flood wasn't just a torrential rain for 40 days but also that the “fountains of the great deep burst open.” Many Biblical geologists agree that this referred to not only underwater volcanoes erupting into the oceans but also subterranean reservoirs of extremely hot water also being injected into the oceans. This activity would have formed the ideal conditions for an ice age to develop. The ocean's temperature would have risen. Warm water evaporates more quickly than cool water so there would have been abundant precipitation for an extended period. At the same time, the volcanic ash that would have entered the atmosphere would have reflected sunlight producing a protracted period of colder weather. This would have been a perfect condition to allow ice sheets to form over the land in the upper parts of the northern hemisphere and Antarctica. The cooler temperatures in the summer would have reduced the glacial melt allowing the glaciers to gradually extend to the limits that are now evident. VK: But, of course, this isn't the only possible explanation for how the extensive glaciers of the Ice Age could have formed, is it? Non-Christian geologists believe that change in the tilt of the earth's axis may have produced extended periods of colder temperature – conceivably up to thousands or even tens of thousands of years. RD: That is another possible explanation for the Ice Age but the kind of changes proposed in the earth's orbital geometry have too small an effect. And if the earth had cooled in this way it would have become much drier. There would have been less evaporation from gradually cooling oceans, not more. This would interfere with snow development and the formation of the enormous ice sheets which all scientists agree once existed. By some calculations the air would have been as much as 60% drier in the proposed scenario – which is pretty much a fatal problem for the recurrent precipitation/freeze/accumulation cycle that would have been required. This is why the Ice Age is a major challenge for secular scientists. There are over 60 ideas (theories) on the origin of the Ice Age. That is why David Alt who is a professor of geology at the University of Montana, stated: “Although theories abound, no one really knows what causes ice ages.” VK: So, all 13 of these data points – plus a great many more that we didn't have time to cover in this series – points out the conclusion is that the Bible's flood account is consistent with scientific observations of the earth and life on the earth. And for anyone who would like to investigate this topic more thoroughly we are including several helpful links to the podcast notes that will be available through most major podcast apps. We would also recommend visiting the website for Creation Ministries International at creation.com. Do you have any final thoughts for today? RD: Yes. We are well aware that a great many people do not agree with the conclusions that we have reached during our Flood of Truth series. But one thing I would point out is that a worldwide flood as described by the Bible points to a clear and straightforward explanation for all of the phenomena that we have discussed. If you dismiss the historicity of the flood account you have to come up with another explanation and very often these explanations are only plausible, at best, for one or two of the phenomena but not the others. The Bible's explanation clearly, easily, and straightforwardly accounts for them all. VK: People need to study these subjects and make up their own minds. But as we've set so often, approaching these topics through a lens that rejects the Bible's historicity is not more scientific than a lens that accepts the reliability of the Bible. Bible critics may doubt the Bible but their doubt is just that - doubt. Doubt is not evidence. Sounds to me like a good time for a prayer. Scientist Mark Armitage shares how dinosaur soft tissue was first discovered by Mary Schweitzer and Dr. Jack Horner in the Hell Creek Formation of Montana. Mark shares how he followed Mary's research and discovered more soft tissue in a triceratops horn, showing how soft tissue is plentiful and cannot last for millions of years. He shows how the Global Flood only a few thousand years ago is the answer for soft dinosaur tissue and why evolutionists are without answers for their long ages worldview. @font-face {font-family:"MS Mincho"; panose-1:2 2 6 9 4 2 5 8 3 4; mso-font-alt:"MS 明朝"; mso-font-charset:128; mso-generic-font-family:modern; mso-font-pitch:fixed; mso-font-signature:-536870145 1791491579 134217746 0 131231 0;}@font-face {font-family:"Cambria Math"; panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:roman; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:3 0 0 0 1 0;}@font-face {font-family:Cambria; panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:roman; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:-536870145 1073743103 0 0 415 0;}@font-face {font-family:"@MS Mincho"; panose-1:2 2 6 9 4 2 5 8 3 4; mso-font-charset:128; mso-generic-font-family:modern; mso-font-pitch:fixed; mso-font-signature:-536870145 1791491579 134217746 0 131231 0;}p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-unhide:no; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Cambria",serif; mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"MS Mincho"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;}.MsoChpDefault {mso-style-type:export-only; mso-default-props:yes; font-family:"Cambria",serif; mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"MS Mincho"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;}div.WordSection1 {page:WordSection1;}
Today's program is Part 3 of "Simple Things To (Only) Slightly More Difficult Things". First, hear long-standing BEL arguments in the audio from famed Baptist apologist Leighton Flowers interviewing Virginia Bible College professor Brian Wagner! It's awesome to hear them discuss "the OMNIs" and the IMs, warn against defining them through Greek philosophy, and making the case that the Incarnation is the greatest argument against utter immutability because God the Son "becoming" flesh means that He can change, because "become is a change word"! Awesome! Then, Bob again moves from a few simple things to understand (from current events) to only slightly more difficult to understand things (Matt Slick). Enyart shares his year-end message to famed paleontologist Mary Schweitzer about dinosaur soft tissue, and his recognition of the success in Argentina of the "Due Date Too Late" abortion regulators where its Senate voted to decriminalize abortion "only" up to 14 weeks. (See Bob's article at AmericanRTL.org/regs.) Then, getting just a bit more difficult to understand, Bob continues with his review of Calvinist theologian Matt Slick's article, "Is God Outside of Time?" Turns out that Matt takes a Biden-like "plausible deniability" position wherein he disclaims the phrase but defends its meaning. Today's Video Resource: Get out of the Matrix Bob takes on a college professor and her philosophy class in a debate regarding absolutes. Who wins? The students have been taught that nothing is absolutely right or wrong, so Bob asks them if that is absolutely right. And theyve been taught that they can only know that which their five senses have told them, so Bob asks them which of their five senses told them that. Is the lack of intellectualism in this college class representative of American higher education? You can decide as you view this video, one of Bobs most extraordinary presentations.

As the new Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom earned $700 million in its first weekend of release, it's clear that dinosaurs have always captured our imagination. Mary Schweitzer, a professor of biological sciences at NC State takes us behind the scenes of her BIO 230 class that uses a more hands-on approach, which she calls the "Science of Studying Dinosaurs."
Thanks to Damian, who suggested T. rex as a topic! Let’s learn all about the T. rex and especially the most famous and controversial specimen ever found, Sue. A T. rex: Sue, also a T. rex: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. Our topic this week is a suggestion from Damian, who wants to hear about the one, the only, the tyrant lizard king with massive everything except arms, Tyrannosaurus rex. Aw yeah You probably know a lot about T. rex without realizing it. It’s THE dinosaur, the one people think of first when you say dinosaur. But a lot of popular knowledge about the T. rex is actually out of date, so let’s find out what’s really going on with that big toothy theropod. First of all, T. rex did not live in the Jurassic period. It lived much later, in the late Cretaceous, around 66 million years ago. But I guess Late Cretaceous Park doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. It was one of the last non-avian dinosaurs, dying off in the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction. It lived in what is now western North America, with close relatives in many other parts of the world. T. rex was a big animal, no doubt about it. The biggest individual we know of, called Sue, stood around 12 feet tall, or a little over 3 ½ meters at the hips. The weight of its massive head was balanced by its long tail. Nose to tail it was around 40 feet long, or about 12 meters. Plenty of other dinosaurs were bigger than T. rex, but T. rex was the biggest land predator we know of. While T. rex had long legs, its arms are famously teeny, only about three feet long, or one meter. That’s barely longer than an adult human’s arm. But recent research shows that the arms weren’t weak. The bones were strong and so were the muscles, although the arm had a limited range of motion and only two toes. Many researchers think T rex used its arms to hold onto struggling prey. Since all we have are fossils, we don’t really know what T. rex looked like beyond its bones and muscles, which we know about from study of muscle attachment sites on the bones. Some researchers think it probably had at least some feathers, since we have feather impressions from some of T rex’s close relations. Baby T rex might have had feathers and shed them as it grew up, or it might have had feathers its whole life. We have fossilized skin impressions from a specimen found in 2002 that show scales on the tail, neck, and hip, so many researchers suggest that T rex only had feathers on its head and back, possibly for decoration or protection from the elements. Closely related species show feather impressions over all of the body, so we know T rex’s cousins were feathered. We also know that T rex had large flat scales on its snout with patches of keratin in the middle, which probably contained sensory bundles. These same patches are present in crocodilians, which help crocs move their eggs and babies without harming them, and help them sense the temperature of their nests. In 2016, researchers discovered that T rex’s teeth contained enamel. This makes the teeth harder, but enamel has to stay damp. That means T rex probably had lips and its teeth wouldn’t have been visible except when the mouth was open. If that sounds weird, most reptiles have lips. Crocodilians don’t, so some of their teeth show when their mouths are closed, but they also live in the water so don’t have to worry about dry mouth. Just to be clear, reptile lips aren’t big kissy lips. They’re just skin that allows the teeth to be completely enclosed within the mouth when the jaws are closed, keeping the mouth from drying out. In 2005, paleontologist Mary Schweitzer found soft tissue in the femur, or thigh bone, of a 68 million year old T rex. The tissue contained blood vessels and a substance called medullary bone, which is only present in female birds right before they lay eggs. Medullary bone helps the bird’s body make shells for her eggs.
For NC State paleontologist Mary Schweitzer, an accidental discovery – and an open mind – led to a new field of paleontology. Schweitzer talks about the emerging field of molecular paleo – what it is and what it can tell us.
This week Kevin talks to Christian microscopist Mark Armitage. After discovering unfossilized dinosaur tissues, Armitage was suspiciously dismissed from his position as Manager for the Electron and Confocal Microscopy Suite at California State University, Northridge. His scientific resume is impressive: Armitage has a BS in education, an MS in biology, and an Ed.S. in science education. He has contributed micrographs and scholarly articles to scientific journals, and has taught at both Azusa Pacific University and CSUN. Armitage contends that he was terminated not for his performance, but for his religious views, and is in the process of suing for wrongful termination. What’s the big deal about soft dinosaur tissues? The scientific establishment knows what is at stake with this issue, which is why other scientists (such as Mary Schweitzer) have offered feeble attempts to explain it away. As Armitage puts it, “If these fossils, these bones scattered across the earth are full of soft tissues, then they have to be young. And if they’re young, the deposits that they’re found in are young. And if the deposits are young, then the earth is young. And if the earth is young, suddenly Genesis becomes a believable account of real history, and that’s what the evolutionists are fearing.” Kevin and Mark talk about the scientific implications of these discoveries, and why they are significant to the gospel. Find out what Mark is up to at his blog, facebook, and youtube pages. You can also look at his personal facebook and youtube accounts. Consider supporting his GoFundMe campaign to help him run his personal microscopy lab, so that he can continue to research soft dinosaur tissues. This episode first aired on May 31st, 2015.
