The Business of Meetings – Episode 144 – BounceBack Leadership with Brian Wagner We are delighted to be speaking with Brian Wagner from Radical Vision today!  Brian experienced a major setback at 43 that left him blind, apart from having a slight bit of vision in one eye. He joins us to share his unique and encouraging story and to discuss how he uses his life-changing experience to influence and motivate leaders to keep moving forward! We hope you enjoy listening to today's inspiring conversation with Brian Wagner! Bio: Embrace your own personal blindness to drive better performance. That's what Brian Wagner has done through BounceBack Leadership. He is the founder and CEO of A Radical Vision. His mission is to help people embrace their own personal blindness to achieve a greater focus and drive better performance. Brian has worked with boards and organizations to clear the path for growth. On March 4, 2011, he awakened on the couch and couldn't see. For the next six months, he was blind. Only brain surgery and multiple eye surgeries have allowed a portion of his vision to return. Since then, Brian has become the author of the semi-autobiography book Sometimes It DOES Take a Brain Surgeon. Brian is the Immediate-Past President of the National Speakers' Association, Ohio Chapter. Brian's journey Brian's journey began when he was ten years old. He had fluid on the brain and a shunt was inserted into his head to drain the fluid into his abdomen. When he was 43, a malformed blood vessel in his brain began to bleed, and the pressure on his nerves caused him to go blind. In 2011, he had brain surgery to remove one of three malformations on his brain stem. Recently, however, the remaining two malformations bled, putting pressure on the nerves that control his voice, so he now has a speech impediment that comes and goes.  What Brian does All Brian wants to do is help people along in their journeys. He has a disability, so he encourages others to recognize their disabilities, whether visible or not and helps them bounce back.   Driving Brian was able to drive a motor vehicle for ten years. He no longer does so because his eye with vision sometimes tends to close during the course of the day. Speaking Brian spoke at his high school graduation when he was seventeen and that helped him realize he wanted to be a speaker. So, he went to Toast Master meetings to practice speaking in front of crowds. He also had opportunities to speak at NSA.  Managing his life day-to-day Brian has worked at the Ohio School for the Blind for the past five years and finds it incredible to see how well blind people can cope! He sometimes finds it hard to do day-to-day things like writing emails and making phone calls, but he is motivated to do whatever he can to get by because he knows there is a good reason for his disability.    Making a better experience for people with disabilities To those with disabilities, it means everything to them when workers at hotels and function venues ask them what they can do to improve their experience!  Inspiring and influencing leaders When speaking to leaders, Brian encourages them not to discount or disregard their disabilities. He hopes to inspire them to be more confident in doing whatever their work requires and to become successful without becoming boastful or cocky.  We can all make our own past Looking at our past, reliving it, and telling others about it, helps us to engage and tell our stories in the way we want them to be heard. Helping executive leaders Brian enjoys speaking to executive leaders looking to inspire their teams. Apart from speaking to groups, he serves leaders via his book, and through retreats and workshops. He has also done a TEDx Talk. Empathy versus sympathy Brian does not want sympathy from others. Even though he does not want anyone to feel sorry for him, he appreciates it when others authentically try to put themselves in his shoes. Bouncing back Brian advises people facing challenges to embrace their setbacks, to do whatever they can to avoid being pitied and to ultimately find purpose and meaning from their setbacks. 3 Business Functions of a Digital Marketing Ecosystem in Health Care That Improve the Customer Experience

How a Digital Transformation Strategy Improves CX, Boosts Revenue, and Reduces Cost to Serve in Health Care  This week, we welcome Brian Wagner to the Digitally Irresistible podcast. Brian has over 20 years of global operating and consulting experience at organizations ranging from start-ups and private equity to Fortune 500 companies in various high-tech industries, including SaaS, MedTech, medical devices, diagnostics, and life sciences tools. As founder and CEO of Health Insights Consulting Group, he helps small companies grow to become big by transforming organizations to meet unmet customer needs.  In addition to previously holding Fortune 500 chief digital marketing and operations officer roles, Brian has expertise in digital marketing, product development, commercial operations, and M&A. He has led both growth and cost-reduction operational improvement efforts across industries as well as global marketing organizations, overseeing product and go-to-market strategies.     On this episode, we tap into Brian's expertise to discuss what it takes to create a digital marketing ecosystem in health care to improve the customer experience while boosting revenue and reducing the cost to serve. A Quest to Improve Lives  After college, Brian sought a job in sales and marketing and landed one at a consumer packaged goods company. He worked there for five years, gaining all the insights he could, before being recruited by a small entrepreneurial company in health care. There, he solidified his passion for improving and saving lives, calling on interventional radiologists, interventional cardiologists, and vascular surgeons to learn the business from the ground up.  From there his career continued to progress, earning roles in digital marketing leadership and general management, approaching each one with a customer-centric perspective. He took time to understand the customer experience—customer challenges and unmet customer needs—so he could focus on improving patient care and the customer experience while reducing the cost to serve. He assessed how they went to market, established end-to-end marketing tech stacks, and went from push to pull marketing to boost customer engagement and enhance the customer journey.  In all of his experience, Brian has remained true to his commitment to saving and improving lives while establishing operational efficiencies and reducing costs. He's developed some best practices along the way. 3 Business Functions to Digitize for Improved CX and Operational Efficiency in Health Care   Brian has identified three business functions that, when digitized, improve CX and operational efficiency, resulting in incremental revenue and cost reductions, specifically in health care. By simplifying processes and access to information, customers across the health care continuum—including acute care facilities, surgery centers, and outpatient providers—enjoy a better overall experience along each step of their journey while vendors can reduce their cost-to-serve.   1. My Team – Who is the Customer's Team?   The first opportunity Brian identifies is to improve operational efficiency through a customer relationship management (CRM) system that enables customers to easily find and contact the right person on their vendor's team to answer their specific question. He points out that with multiple health care solutions and products sold by one vendor to a hospital, a customer could have as many as 10 people assigned to support them. In the absence of an accessible digital CRM solution, it is cumbersome to find the right person to answer a simple question or schedule a service request.  With the goal of addressing these unmet customer needs to improve the customer experience for health care organizations, Brian led a team that revamped an outdated system and established an end-to-end digital ecosystem platform that enables customers to sign into a secure online portal to view their personalized team.  In the My Team component of this digital ecosystem, customers can view their orders, obtain contact information for their support representatives, and complete product training. Enabling customers to securely access the information they need online on their own schedule improves efficiency, increases satisfaction and customer loyalty, and reduces the cost to serve by redirecting staff to other areas that more directly benefit the customer.   2. My Orders – How Does the Customer Order?  The second opportunity to improve operational efficiency involves optimizing the order placement process. Through a digital ordering experience, customers can conduct initial pre-purchase research, identify what they need without necessarily involving a sales representative, and ultimately place their order online according to their own schedule—which in many cases occurs outside of conventional business hours.  When customers enter the post-purchase experience, they can track their order online (delivery, construction, installation) and set up and complete training sessions to maximize their product onboarding speed and utilization with patients. Having online access to the information they need vastly improves the customer experience for MedTech customers in acute care centers and hospitals which make capital equipment purchases that often require arrangements for construction within the hospital and training on how to use the new product or service. Brian says that customers have embraced My Orders to such an extent that many of them purchase hundreds of thousands worth of capital equipment through the system.    But change can be hard, especially in the beginning before customers understand the benefits it offers for efficiency. The improvements Brian and his team made to enhance the digital customer experience required a lot of marketing and customer support to help customers learn the new processes and enjoy increased productivity so they could focus more on patient care rather than administrative tasks.  These improvements served as a differentiator in the marketplace and incentivized customers to do business with them because of the convenience and efficiency factors. The ease of doing business gave them an edge even when competitors offered viable alternative products as well. Their customers valued the improved process as well as a better customer experience, enabling them to devote more time to patient care.  3. My Training – How Does the Customer Receive Training?  The third opportunity for operational improvements is to revamp how customers arrange to get trained on their new product or service. In the analog world, customers would call their specialist to schedule in-person training. This generally required a lot of back-and-forth coordination and a high cost to serve because the training was delivered in person, which also involved travel, hotels, meals, and a lot of time.   In the digital world, however, the customer onboarding process is much simpler and results in good digital CX. Customers can conveniently schedule on-demand or live training through their secure online My Training portal whenever and wherever they need them.  Digital Transformation Improves CX in Health Care  By studying the customer journey and identifying areas for improvement, organizations can implement digital transformation strategies to solve pain points in the customer journey and delight the customer from pre-purchase to post-purchase, while also boosting revenue and reducing the cost to serve the customer.  The modern era of pull marketing strategies vs. dated push-marketing methods meets health care customers where they are. It empowers them to efficiently transact and arrange training and support in ways that are similar to the convenient and user-friendly experiences consumers enjoy with online merchants such as Amazon, Target, and Walmart. This digital health care ecosystem offers acute care centers and hospitals improved efficiencies that allow them to focus on the things that matter most—patient care and improved outcomes.  What Brian Does for Fun   Brian, his wife, and their two young daughters love to travel. They enjoy experiencing different cultures and foods, making human connections, and building a global perspective. Before COVID, they loved going on adventures, but when COVID hit, they hunkered down and found new opportunities for fun.  This year, their travels picked back up and for spring break they went to Hawaii to visit Pearl Harbor in Oahu and the Road to Hana in Maui. They did SNUBA where the oxygen tanks float on the water so they could swim down 30 feet for an up-close experience with the marine life and sea turtles.   This summer they traveled to the former Yugoslavia (where Brian's wife is from) where they spent time with family and friends and visited Montenegro and Herceg Novi on the Adriatic Coast.  To learn more about Brian, connect with him on LinkedIn.  Watch the video here. Today's program is Part 3 of "Simple Things To (Only) Slightly More Difficult Things". First, hear long-standing BEL arguments in the audio from famed Baptist apologist Leighton Flowers interviewing Virginia Bible College professor Brian Wagner! It's awesome to hear them discuss "the OMNIs" and the IMs, warn against defining them through Greek philosophy, and making the case that the Incarnation is the greatest argument against utter immutability because God the Son "becoming" flesh means that He can change, because "become is a change word"! Awesome! Then, Bob again moves from a few simple things to understand (from current events) to only slightly more difficult to understand things (Matt Slick). Enyart shares his year-end message to famed paleontologist Mary Schweitzer about dinosaur soft tissue, and his recognition of the success in Argentina of the "Due Date Too Late" abortion regulators where its Senate voted to decriminalize abortion "only" up to 14 weeks. (See Bob's article at AmericanRTL.org/regs.) Then, getting just a bit more difficult to understand, Bob continues with his review of Calvinist theologian Matt Slick's article, "Is God Outside of Time?" Turns out that Matt takes a Biden-like "plausible deniability" position wherein he disclaims the phrase but defends its meaning. Today's Video Resource: Get out of the Matrix Bob takes on a college professor and her philosophy class in a debate regarding absolutes. Who wins? The students have been taught that nothing is absolutely right or wrong, so Bob asks them if that is absolutely right. And they’ve been taught that they can only know that which their five senses have told them, so Bob asks them which of their five senses told them that. Is the lack of intellectualism in this college class representative of American higher education? You can decide as you view this video, one of Bob’s most extraordinary presentations.

My guest today is Brian Wagner, Founder and CEO of A Radical Vision, an organization with a powerful mission statement: "It took a crippling disease for us to understand that we have no vision. Losing our sight allowed us to gain vision. That was the greatest gift that's ever been given. We can't hide from our adversity. Our goal is to help others recognize their adversity, go blind, and gain vision. This happened to us. And now, we want to help others have that same focus.” A Radical Vision When Brian was 10, he started to develop some health problems due to a cavernous malformation, which is a malformed blood vessel that can form anywhere in your body. Brian’s just happened to have formed in his brain stem. So, as a result, Brian dealt with a variety of different issues throughout his life. Then, at the age of 43, it started to bleed, and bleed, and bleed. And when it bled, it put pressure on the nerves that control his vision, and he started to go blind. So Brian had to undergo a brain surgery in order to remove the cavernous malformation from his brain stem. Brian still can’t see out of both eyes, but in other ways, he has more perspective and vision than ever before in his life. Brian inspires and motivates others to embrace their personal blindness, whether it be physical or mental, through a process he called A Radical Vision. Watch Brian's TEDx talk HERE. Brian Wagner wasn't exactly in love with fly fishing the first few times he went, but a friend had invited him and promised cold beer was involved. After a few times, he began to learn the knots and techniques to catch fish and it became a lot more fun. And while unplugging from work is nice, there are many parallels -- no matter how much you study the technical skills, to truly excel, you must also learn the "art" of both fly fishing and business. In this episode, Brian and I talk about how his fly fishing has built some really strong client relationships. It's also given him the ability to hone some skills that translate straight to the office, like focusing, remembering to be in the moment, and patience -- as Brian says, "Nothing good happens when you rush it." I also really liked talking with Brian about how it's up to individuals to own their career but the organization must support it, which includes sharing passions or creating shared experiences as a team. The last thing Brian wants is for everyone in the firm to be the same (i.e., accountants who only talk about accounting) because that'd be a very boring place to work.

Only two months on the job at the University of Michigan, and Brian Wagner has been a part of major national news, when three athletic facebook accounts were hacked in the middle of the night. Wagner talks about this incredible story, where spam hackers placed posts through the Michigan athletics facebook accounts, then locked out the entire UM digital team. Wagner reveals how Michigan worked with Facebook's London office, then its Silicon Valley crew, and learned quite a few ways to protect themselves for the future. Wagner also discusses some of his views on social media, especially when having a major college coach with a unique brand in football's Jim Harbaugh, as well as ways that microsites can help establish customer service aspects for the fans attending games or trying to seek out specific information.
