Damien Chazelle's "Babylon" was one of 2022's largest and most ambitious films. It's fair to say it split everyone who saw it down the middle with their opinions. But an area most could agree on was the film's technical craft. Two frequent Chazelle collaborators, composer Justin Hurwitz and costume designer Mary Zophres were kind enough to spend some time going in-depth on their work for Chazelle's latest. First up is my interview with Hurwitz, where he breaks down the extensive layering of the score, how the film pushed him out of his comfort zone to try new things, if he's open to working with anyone outside Damien Chazelle, and more. Then we have Zoe Rose Bryant's interview with Mary Zophres, where she breaks down the film's elaborate costumes, working with all the different department heads on this massive project, her reaction to some of the criticisms thrown at the film's anachronisms, and more. You do not want to miss listening to these before the Oscars! Please take a listen to them down below and enjoy. Thank you! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Jenny Eagan, costume designer for the new star-studded Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, has a career path defined by opportunities taken. Although she did not formally study costume design, her many award-winning projects feature characters who leap off the screen, thanks in no small part to her costumes. Who would have thought a girl from Independence, Missouri would end up in this profession? “Certainly not my Mom,” laughs Eagan. “I wanted to be a middle-school teacher to make a difference. Halfway through college, I switched to textile marketing and merchandising because I love clothes, but never knew that could lead to working in the entertainment industry.” Post-graduation, Eagan drove cross country to live in San Diego, where she became ‘excellent on rollerblades' before following friends to Los Angeles. She joined a temp agency and her first interview was for a low budget film. As fate would have it, Mary Zophres was the costume designer on her second temp job. Eagan shadowed her on weekends, getting coffee and grabbing lunches. She observed and absorbed everything, until Zophres invited her to join the team on Any Given Sunday, her first job as a production assistant. Six months at Western Costume Company gained her entry into the Union. She spent over a decade with Zophres, progressing from production assistant to assistant costume designer. “Mary hates when I say she was an amazing mentor, but I didn't know anything and she taught me everything.” Her first feature as a costume designer was Contraband, with Mark Wahlberg and director Baltasar Kormákur, but the project that launched her career was the first season of True Detective for HBO. The show garnered her the Costume Designers Guild Award for Best Contemporary Television Series in 2015. “It was an amazing experience and a confidence builder for me.” Eagan moved on to design several small but critically acclaimed films and television series including Olive Kitteridge which won her an Emmy, Widows, and the celebrated Beasts of No Nation. The first iteration of the Knives Out trilogy, written and directed by Rian Johnson, was an unmitigated hit. “Because of our limited shoot time, we had all guns blazing,” she says. “I feel like I fit every single one of the cast members the week before. Thankfully, Rian wrote well-defined characters and chose seasoned actors. We were all in sync.” She was awarded her third CDGA for her efforts. Johnson wanted everyone to ratchet it up for the sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Eagan decided early on that most of the costumes would be custom made. Shooting on a remote island off Greece and in Serbia during Covid, she knew she could not count on shopping. She prepped in Los Angeles, anticipating multiples for principals and stunt doubles, then brought extra fabrics to cover her back. While designing the first Knives Out, Eagan forged great relationships with Johnson and producer Ram Bergman. They agreed that travel during the pandemic could be problematic and allowed her to bring her union team from Los Angeles. She brought ACD Jessica Albertson, supervisor Emily Egge, set costumer Claire Sandrin, and cutter/fitter Erica Ciaglia. “Claire, Emily, and I first worked together on No Country for Old Men (designed by Mary Zophres) and have collaborated as much as possible since. I was thankful for this luxury. I'm not a one-man show, we are a team.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

She shares how she works with actors, large amounts of extras, the production designer, and the DP. She describes the thrill of seeing the actor become the character in the fitting room. Camera tests are important since “your eye tells you different things than the lens does” and she tells some of the things she has discovered through camera tests. She also describes dressing Jeff Bridges on The Big Lebowski, researching First Man and her experience on La La Land. We learn a lot about how the costumes can add so much to the storytelling.

Better get your ties on, because it's time to talk about Gangster Squad.  Spencer and Ethan discuss the campy 2013 film about how a group of cops took down Mickey Cohen and his gang back in 1949. Costumed by Mary Zophres, the style of the film is interesting; there are period accurate double breasted suits and ties, but a few liberties with the lapels and shirt collars. It's almost as much a throw back to the gangster films of the 90s as it is a send up of the ones from the 40s and 50s. Listen in as we analyze the menswear and some of our favorite cheesy quotes from this flick. Welcome to Episode 11 of Nooks and Crannies! Nasal Tubes, Black Eyed Kids and Timely Oscar Picks Matt talks all about the Sneaky Weasel’s at Balderdash Brewery and Evan discusses the ABC’s of a great Ontario nut brown ale with his selection from the much better Ashton Brewing Company. Matty then needed a swig before informing Epen of the vilest baby accouterment he has yet encountered **TRIGGER WARNING: GROSS DESCRIPTIONS** (3:00), Evan then matches Matty with a pet peeve of his own relating to sidewalks and precipitation (5:37). This week we are recommending three, Paranormal/UFO shows (7:42)! We start with the real-life giants over at Astonishing Legends with Matty sharing his heroic Black Eyed Kid’s story; Next is Not Alone, hosted by Sam and Jason who take silly deep dives into the paranormal and 100% based in reality conspiracies, highly recommend them, Matty has been a listener since episode 1! Last and certainly, well…is the Canadi-Alien Rob, don’t call me Kris, Kristofferson host of the critically acclaimed and fan-driven masterpiece known as Our Strange Skies, Matty graced Rob with his presence a while back and Rob was the very first podcaster who shared a Nooks and Crannies episode. He then defended my honor in response to this awful troll who lived under a bridge in his FB group. Anywhozydoozy, Rob is the greatest friend of podcasters around and I consider him a RL friend, despite his potential of being an ancient Man-In-Black, Canadi-Alien!! Evan wrestles the mic away and teaches Matty all about Zora Neale Hurston, a pioneering female anthropologist from the 1920’s (13:36), we talk a bit about how this was unusual for the time but not unusual for anthropology and finish off with a bonus recommendation of Hortense Powdermaker, who it turns out, is not African American rather she worked with them in impoverished rural America. She was actually born into a Jewish Family in Pennsylvania…I could go edit that error out, but I figured, good reminder to look things up first eh!?! Frances Slaney would be so disappointed in me, yet so proud of Evan… Hold onto your Jay’s Hats, it’s the Nooks and Crannies 1st annual Totally Unsubstantiated Oscar Prediction Spectacular (20:05). See Paul, this is what happens when Evan and I are left to our own devices. Matty manages to wedge in a shameless self-promotional plug, one of those “I totally know that guy” type move, awkwardly shouting out Murray Valeriano and his much more acclaimed and talented wife Mary Zophres :-) who is a costume designer who works with the Cohen bros. on all their movies and was up for an Oscar for the Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Evan finishes off this amazing analysis with a story of him being shitty to some new friends at Carleton, what a guy Epen is eh? **Not sure what happened to my mic in the Oscar segment, not bad, just weird sounding.** And last, and seriously, certainly not least! My wonderful and adoring wife Melly got a very special birthday shout-out because I love her very, very much (37:05). Much like Murray V, I totally married above my pay grade, and I let her know that constantly and on occasion publically. But, in reality, this was just an opportunity to self-aggrandize myself and talk about my culinary prowess. So…ya I am an awful person.
