While Americans rely on debit transactions for the necessities of life, most are unaware of the networks that drive those transactions, nor are they aware that one company, Visa, has monopolized debit transactions, penalized industry participants that seek to use alternative debit networks, and co-opted innovators, technology companies, and financial institutions to forestall or snuff out threats to Visa's debit network dominance.” So begins the monopolization lawsuit filed on September 24 by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) against the country's largest card company, Visa Inc.On one level, the case is simple: The DOJ alleges a clear violation of laws protecting markets against monopolies. But the case gets more complicated when looking at the details, in part because payment systems are mostly invisible part of the financial ecosystem. In effect, the DOJ alleges that Visa is pulling the levers of a really opaque and complex system to preclude competition and squeeze fees out of banks and vendors for itself. To understand the complexities and implications of the case, Bethany and Luigi are joined by Kathryn Judge, Harvey J. Goldschmid Professor of Law at Columbia University. Judge is an expert on banking, financial crises, regulatory architecture, and intermediation design beyond finance. Her book, Direct: The Rise of the Middleman Economy and the Power of Going to the Source (HarperBusiness, 2022), was on the long list for the Financial Times Business Book of the Year Award. Together, the three of them discuss both the surface-level and structural issues of an economy where consumers and small businesses are shortchanged on what is essentially a private sales tax on all debit-card purchases—and how to look for collective solutions when opt-outs aren't possible.Episode Notes: Also check out the ProMarket article “A DOJ Victory Against Visa May Not Help Merchants or Consumers” by Lulu Wang, Assistant Professor of Finance at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.

Your genial host Norm Wilner hopes to see you at the Festival.

In Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner", the mariner shoots an albatross...and must spend the rest of his life paying penance for his sin. What on earth does this albatross represent? Civilization? Tradition? Christendom? Or is it, as Coleridge would probably insist, just an albatross? In this episode, Sophie and Raymond discuss the Romantic poets' role in the history of art, thought, society, and Christian culture, as well as their special influence C.S. Lewis. We haven't totally come to a consensus on this, but we're pretty sure that Coleridge doesn't want us to kill albatrosses. In our next episode, we'll be discussing the Lulu Wang's 2019 The Farewell, a comedy-drama about and young Chinese-American woman who struggles with the ethical dilemma of whether she should tell her grandmother about her terminal cancer diagnosis. “I always knew that I wanted to write in some way. My mother is a writer and I kind of just grew up around writing and literature,” says Lulu Wang. “But, it felt like such a lonely art form, so when I got to college, that was the first time I thought about filmmaking as a career.” Like many viewers, she hadn't thought much about the writer behind her favorite shows and movies. “I took a 101 class and that's when I started to really understand how films and TV are made. We got to make a couple short films, I got to work with my friends, and it was wonderful to be able to create and re-create a story multiple times.” Wang has seven credits on IMDb including The Farewell and most recently, Expats. The Farewell stars Awkwafina, and it follows a Chinese family who discovers their grandmother has only a short while left to live, but they decide to keep this from her and focus on scheduling a wedding before she dies. In Expats, Nicole Kidman stars as Margaret Woo, an expatriate living in Hong Kong when tragedy befalls her family. “I feel like my style is still evolving,” says Wang. “I'm still learning, but I think early on, the stuff I was drawn to were films that ask an interesting question. I'm just fascinated by people, the way they behave, and human psychology and sociology.” Want more? Steal my first book, Ink by the Barrel - Secrets From Prolific Writers right now for free. Kidman then approached Lulu to bring a best-selling novel to the small screen. “We are what we survive.” That's the message of Expats, the powerful new limited series from our guest this week, Lulu Wang. Lulu is a writer-director whose stories are unflinchingly intimate portraits of characters captivatingly full of contradictions. In this show, adapted from a novel by Janice Y.K. Lee, those characters are three women, different in age, class, personal circumstance and relationship to motherhood, who become linked by an unthinkable tragedy. These women's stories combine to tell a tale of grief and privilege in a modern day Hong Kong battered by typhoon weather and simmering political dissent. And they do so movingly. Lulu till now has been best known as the writer-director of 2019's The Farewell, based on a radio story she wrote in 2016 for This American Life, about her own Chinese-American immigrant family. This follow-up to that breakout hit sounds like from the outset some kind of thriller: Nicole Kidman plays Margaret, an American living in Hong Kong whose youngest son disappears at a night market. Instead of a pulse-pounding pursuit, full of cops, clues and criminals like most abduction dramas, Expats instead unfolds at a meditative, mournful pace, against the backdrop of the 2014 Umbrella Movement protests in Hong Kong. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, celebrating the magnificent finale that dropped today, Lulu discusses about what happened to Margaret's child Gus, why the show refused to give an explanation for his disappearance and instead prioritised what it means to grieve; how grief doesn't shrink, leaving us instead to grow around it.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. This week we're excited to present a conversation with director Lulu Wang, who's new Prime Video series Expats is now streaming. Lulu Wang casts her penetrating gaze on the intersection of race and class in Hong Kong's milieu of expats, and the migrant domestic workers employed by them, in this vivid adaptation of Janice Y. K. Lee's widely acclaimed novel, The Expatriates (1998). Across six episodes, Expats shuttles back and forth between the prelude and aftermath of a tragedy that has dramatically reshaped the lives of three women—Margaret (Nicole Kidman), a mother left shattered as she navigates her way through an inconceivable loss; her neighbor Hilary (Sarayu Blue), herself struggling to regain control of her marriage in the face of infidelity; and the twentysomething, free-spirited Mercy (Ji-young Yoo), who finds herself caught in the center of Margaret and Hilary's anguish. But for the limited series' feature-length fifth episode, the three women recede into the background with Wang shifting her focus in an entirely different direction, and transforming this rich tapestry of stories into something altogether more complex. In this penultimate episode, “Central,” Margaret and Hilary's Filipina caretakers, Essie (Ruby Ruiz) and Puri (Amelyn Pardenilla), come to the fore as we follow them on their day off—socializing, corresponding with family abroad, and carving out time to pursue their own dreams, but who nevertheless remain entangled in their employers' quandaries, and whose own future hangs in the balance of their every decision. This conversation was moderated by FLC Assistant Programmer Madeline Whittle.
Keith gives his thoughts on the Amazon Prime TV series "Expats," from director Lulu Wang.

Filmmaker Lulu Wang is known for her poignant storytelling and unique voice in cinema. This week, Wang joins host Charlotte Alter to take us behind the scenes of her latest project, the Amazon series “Expats,” starring Nicole Kidman. "Expats" premieres on Amazon Prime Video on January 26th.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Christopher and Nicole with special guest, Dan, discuss The Farewell and the issues that come along with generational conflicts that cross international boundaries as well. We disagree about the actual quality of the filmmaking particularly the bizarre score, Dan discusses the dissonance between what was considered funny by Asian vs non-Asian audiences, and the tension between the families who emigrate and the families who stay. It's worth hearing the real story from This American Life. For more on Lulu Wang, check out this article from The Atlantic. Nicole recommends early Ang Lee: The Wedding Banquet and Eat Drink Man Woman. Christopher recommends Star Trek: Discovery. Website Store YouTube Facebook Group Page
Jack Huston has worked with Scorsese, Ridley Scott, David O' Russell, The Coens, had meaty roles on series like “Mayfair Witches,” “Fargo,” and, maybe most notably, “Boardwalk Empire,” where he played Richard Harrow. His latest project is Lulu Wang's Amazon series “Expats.” On this episode he talks about gaining 30 pounds for that part (which wasn't as much fun as it sounds), why it all starts with the voice for him, writing and directing his passion project “The Day of The Fight” for Michael Pitt and Joe Pesci, and he reveals a common trait of all great directors he's known. Plus we discuss the current state of Independent Film, what we think should change, and much more. “Expats” streams on Amazon Prime starting January 25th. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram
Director Lulu Wang joins us to discuss directing the new TV series "Expats," which tells the story of three American women living in Hong Kong whose lives intersect after a tragic event. The show stars Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue, and Ji-young Yoo and premieres on Prime Video on January 26.
Acclaimed filmmaker Lulu Wang hops to the small screen this week with Expats on Prime and she dropped by the podcast to tell us all about it. Plus we witness Sofía Vergara breaking bad as a cartel boss Griselda Blanco in Netflix's Griselda, revisit London's '90s criminal underworld in Sexy Beast on Paramount+, and rejoin Vicky McClure's bomb squad in the return of Trigger Point on ITV. But that's not all, because the gang talk about the ups and downs of this year's Emmys (#justiceforBetterCallSaul) and Boyd and Kay once again try (and fail) to get James to care about The Traitors.
Andrew Haigh's new film All of Us Strangers, is both a love story and a ghost story. Starring Andrew Scott, it explores the impact of a chance encounter in a deserted tower block, and how nostalgia draws him back to the suburban family home where his parents appear to be living, just as they were on the day they died, 30 years ago. Tom Hibbert was a popular music journalist who wrote for Smash Hits, Q and many other top magazines in the 1980s and 90s and whose irreverent style of writing would inspire the generation that followed. Miranda Sawyer and Jasper Murison-Bowie join to talk about ‘Phew, Eh Readers', a new book that compiles some of his best articles.Lulu Wang's powerful new series Expats explores the lives of women in Hong Kong who are all outsiders for different reasons. It is an unsurprising theme given such female-led cast (including Nicole Kidman), as well as female-led production remains a rarity for shows of this scale and ambition. Writer and director Wang, who grew up in the US after her parents fled Beijing, joins Samira to discuss her expansive vision for it.Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Julian May
This week's guest is Hollywood A-Lister, Nicole Kidman. With a career that spans over four decades, Kidman has starred in almost 100 TV and film projects and picked up all of the most prestigious awards including, an Oscar, Bafta and six Golden Globes. She was born in Hawaii to Australian parents: her father was a biochemist and later a psychologist, and her mother was a nurse educator. Aged 3, she moved to Australia, and it was there, that she found her love of acting. She headed to Hollywood at 20 for a starring role opposite Sam Neill in the psychological thriller Dead Calm – and she quickly made her mark. She has since forged a very successful career – in an industry renowned for its fickleness. In this episode, she discusses her latest project – Expats – an Amazon Prime drama directed by The Farwell's Lulu Wang. It follows three American women living in Hong Kong whose lives are impacted by a horrific event – the disappearance of a young boy. Kidman plays Margaret, the mother of the missing child. In this episode, she sits down with Kelly-Anne Taylor to unpick the emotional impact the role had– and the importance of having more women behind the lens. Plus, she talks about inner resilience being a superpower and reveals how she deals with negative press. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
