What made C.S. Lewis such a compelling thinker and writer? In this episode of Thinking Christian, Dr. James Spencer is joined by Dr. Jeffrey Barbeau, professor of theology at Wheaton College and author of The Last Romantic: C.S. Lewis, English Literature, and Modern Theology. Together, they explore Lewis’s unique ability to blend reason, imagination, and theology—making faith more accessible in a world increasingly skeptical of God.

In early 1820 a young farm boy by the name of Joseph Smith believed he had a vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ appearing to him, exhorting him not to join any of the existing churches of his day, for they were all corrupt. Just over 200 years later in 2023 in Wilmore, Kentuck in the main chapel on the campus of Asbury Theological Seminary, something of a revival began. For two weeks, thousands of people from all over the world came to Ashbury to see for themselves what was happening. During these two weeks, people prayed and sang worship songs. Many Christians, however, debated as to whether or not this was a genuine revival or just an emotive outpouring of mostly Gen-Z'ers. And most Evangelical Christians criticize Joseph's Smith's first vision as either legendary, completely fabricated, or theologically aberrant. How can we rightly discern whether or not people's personal experiences are truly from God? This week on the Profile we wrap up our conversation with theologian and literary scholar Dr. Jeffery Barbeau about his new book The Last Romantic - C.S. Lewis, English Literature, and Modern Theology and consider more of Lewis's insights and how they can equip us to think biblically about personal religious experiences.Jeffery Barbeau (Ph.D., Marquette University) is professor of theology at Wheaton College, Editor of The Coleridge Bulletin, and a writer on British Romanticism, religion and literature, and the history of Christian thought. Beth Barbeau returns for her sixth appearance on The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, and as always, she brings her signature wisdom, warmth, and practical insight. In this episode, Beth and Ginny dive into the concept of stretching—physically, mentally, and emotionally—throughout parenthood and life. From the unexpected challenges of new motherhood to the lifelong process of navigating change, Beth shares how embracing discomfort can lead to growth, resilience, and deeper connections with our children. Beth reminds us that motherhood is not just something we do—it is something we become. Raising small children may not look like world-changing work from the outside, but it is—every act of care, every moment of sacrifice, and every decision to show up shapes the future in profound ways. Beth also introduces her latest free webinar, How to Evaluate Your Sick Kids, along with her invaluable downloadable guide, Let Me Feel Your Forehead. This resource empowers parents with practical tools to assess and manage everyday childhood illnesses confidently at home, reducing unnecessary panic and medical visits. As always, Beth's expertise goes beyond midwifery—she equips families with generational wisdom that strengthens not just parents, but entire communities. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the constant stretching of parenthood, this episode is a must-listen. This conversation is an encouragement to all mothers: you are braver than you think, and the work you do matters more than you know. This one has a few sound issues :). If you have ever had a deeply moving personal experience with God, you know it can be something that words cannot adequately convey. Perhaps it is deeply emotional, powerful, and moving. The experience solidifies your conviction that what you believe about God is true. You might also believe God "spoke" to you in that moment. But given that there are a multitude of other religions today with devotees who claim to have similar experiences, how can we know that what we have experienced is an authentic movement of the God who is there? This week and next on the Profile, we talk with theologian and literary scholar Dr. Jeffrey Barbeau about his new book The Last Romantic - C.S. And so that's where our campaign was born. Our strategy was 'Your remarkably transparent advisor.'" Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

How do we know good teaching when we see it? Whether you're a new faculty member, a seasoned educator, or an administrator, this episode offers a look at how we can better understand and promote effective teaching practices. Lauren Barbeau, PhD, Assistant Director for Learning and Technology Initiatives at Georgia Tech, joins us to discuss the Critical Teaching Behaviors framework (CTB). The CTB framework was developed by Barbeau and Claudia Cornejo Happel, PhD, to provide a comprehensive system for instructors and administrators to identify and document good teaching.  The CTB categorizes effective teaching behaviors into six main areas. These categories are derived from a thorough analysis of research focused on teaching and learning. The areas include alignment, inclusion, engagement, assessment, technology integration, and reflection. Barbeau explains the inspiration behind creating this framework centered on behaviors and each of the six categories.   Barbeau discusses how this comprehensive guide can help you plan a path to document your teaching and more. Barbeau says, “we're also showcasing these are the behaviors that lead to improved student outcomes. So, when you're doing these things, you can know that you're an effective instructor and someone reviewing you can know that you're effective as well.”  Speaking of Higher Ed is produced by the Center for Instructional Innovation at Augusta University. In this episode, host Dr. Sabeen Dhand interviews vascular surgeon Dr. Rami Tadros about advantages and indications for radial access in PAD treatment and the current selection of radial access devices. --- CHECK OUT OUR SPONSOR Surmodics Sublime Radial Access Platform https://sublimeradial.com/ --- SHOW NOTES Dr. Rami Tadros is a vascular surgeon and Site Director of Endovascular Aortic Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Tadros begins by discussing how often he uses radial access in his practice, how current wire and catheter technology limits the potential of radial access, and how evolution of these devices (such as increased length and improved sizing for transradial tools) is on the horizon. Dr. Tadros also discusses the indications and specific advantages for radial access. He describes his device preferences, workflow, and workarounds for radial access. The doctors then take a deeper dive into lengths and sizing of the tools that are currently on the market. They offer some insight on maximizing distance while still maintaining pushability and taking into account the variety of patient anatomy. There is also a brief discussion on pedal access, risks associated with it, and closure complications. Dr. Tadros covers specific clinical vignettes for treating PAD with radial access. There are limitations of the currently available devices, so it is important to plan for distal embolization and bailout stents. We conclude the episode with some guidance for radial access. We review the required tools, the importance of confirming patency of the palmar arch, and the Barbeau test to inform radial access. Dr. Tadros also highlights the use of verapamil, heparin, and nitroglycerin to minimize the risk of vessel spasm. --- RESOURCES Dr. Rami Tadros Twitter: https://twitter.com/VascMD
