Kevin Stoller is joined by longtime educator and podcast host Steve Miletto to unpack the 1984 film Teachers, a gritty dramedy that offers an unflinching critique of the American public school system. Directed by Arthur Hiller and starring Nick Nolte, Teachers dives headfirst into the dysfunction, bureaucracy, and burnout often hidden behind school walls. Set in a troubled urban high school, the story centers on idealistic teacher Alex Jurel, who's caught between his desire to make a difference and a system that seems determined to maintain the status quo. With subplots involving a mentally ill teacher who was never removed, a student lawsuit, and apathetic staff, the movie blurs the line between satire and sobering reality. Kevin and Steve discuss how many of the themes from Teachers—such as disengaged leadership, systemic failure, and student disillusionment—still resonate in today's schools. Their conversation explores what's changed (and what hasn't) in the decades since the film's release, the importance of strong school culture, and how educators can lead with purpose in the face of institutional challenges. It's a raw and honest discussion about the role of teachers, the need for systemic change, and the heart it takes to truly connect with students.   Takeaways: Teachers (1984) offers a satirical yet sobering critique of the American public school system, many of which still resonate today. The character of Alex Jurel represents the struggle of passionate educators trying to make a difference within a broken system. The episode explores how authentic relationships and emotional intelligence are still the most powerful tools educators have. The discussion underscores the mental health toll on both students and teachers in rigid, outdated school environments. Despite the challenges, the film and the conversation both reinforce why committed, caring educators matter more than ever.   About Steve Miletto: Steven Miletto, EdD has been an educator in Georgia(US) for 38 years. He has served public school families as a history teacher, assistant principal, high school principal, and RESA (Regional Education Service Agency) Executive Director in the Heart of Georgia RESA (8 years) and now with North Georgia RESA (3years). In 2009, he was the Georgia Principal of the Year and a finalist for NASSP/MetLife National Principal of the Year in 2010. In 2007 he received the Atlanta Braves/AT&T Educator of the Year Award. No one has to think Love Story is a good movie to acknowledge that it's a beloved romance that made an absolute killing at the box office 55 years ago. The AFI remembers Arthur Hiller's film fondly too. It's just that we Ellises aren't at all sorry to say that we aren't as enamored as millions of other people have been. It feels rushed and story beats aren't allowed to breathe, plus---Oscar nominations or not---the performances certainly weren't award-worthy. The title of the movie is appropriate too because the overly-earnest story is focused on the love between Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw...and absolutely nothing else. In any case, as Valentine's Day approaches, settle in for our 644th episode about the preppy boy and the sassy girl who headline Old Love Month here on Have You Ever Seen. Fast-forward to 2003, and Andrew Fleming reimagines this classic, casting Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks in a similar tale of pre-wedding jitters mixed with undercover operations. We'll compare the comedic styles of each film, how the humor has evolved over the decades, and discuss whether the remake holds up to the original's legacy. Tune in as we unpack the antics, the laughs, and the unexpected bonds that make "The In-Laws" a comedic encounter of the familial kind.

In this week's Lilli Palmer Acteurist Oeuvre-view episode, we encounter more Nazis in a couple of movies very loosely based on real WWII incidents: Disney's Miracle of the White Stallions (1963), based on Operation Cowboy (but with the equine eugenics shoved into the subtext), and Operation Crossbow (1965), about the attempt by British Intelligence to stop the threat of Nazi rockets. Sophia Loren shares a great scene with Lilli Palmer in the latter, but to say more would be spoilers. Steve Martin Month continues as this week we're heading down to the fern store and haggling over haircuts with 1984's The Lonely Guy, directed by Arthur Hiller, and starring Steve Martin, Charles Grodin, Judith Ivey, Steve Lawrence and Robyn Douglas -- a much wackier movie than last week's entry, though one that can't quite tonally balance all of its ambitions, losing its comedic edge to a rather rote romance. Still, the movie is quite funny, with the majority of its laughs belonging to Grodin, who is right at home mining comedy gold out of the absolute worst person to talk to at a party. Can Martin's charm and Grodin's misanthropy lift this movie above its rom-com trappings? We watched it to find out. Other works discussed on this episode include some bonus Martin movies like L.A. Story, Baby Mama, Traitor and The Man With Two Brains, as well as what might be a career-best turn from Grodin in The Great Muppet Caper. We also talk a little video games, as J Mo wades into Star Ocean: First Departure R, while Hayley has become ensnared in the music of one Taylor Swift. If you'd like to watch this week's episode before listening, good luck! Just like last week this one is not readily available on streaming in Canada. We'll be back next week with another Steve Martin movie, though his role as Insolent Waiter might be considered more of a cameo, as we cross off a long-standing unseen from J Mo's collection: 1979's The Muppet Movie, currently streaming on Disney+.

During the 1990s, Gosnell would serve as editor in several more films by Columbus. The 1990s started with Gosnell working as an editor in two high-profile projects: Pretty Woman (1990) by Garry Marshall, and Home Alone (1990) by Chris Columbus. Both turned out to be among the major hits of the year 1990. He then worked in the Columbus films Only the Lonely (1991), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), and Nine Months (1995).Raja and I discuss his remarkable career as an editor, why he jumped to directing, and why he choose to do the thing everyone says not to do direct children and animals. I had a ball talking shop with Raja.We also discuss his remarkable new film Gun and a Hotel Bible, which he co-directed with Alicia Joy LeBlanc.Based on an award-winning play, GUN AND A HOTEL BIBLE is the story of a young man on the verge of a violent act (Pete) and his encounter with a personified hotel bible (Gideon). Can Gideon sway Pete before Pete pulls the trigger?Enjoy my conversation with Raja Gosnell.

Even though George Herman Ruth is arguably the greatest baseball player of all time, The Babe is not even a good movie, never mind a great one. The problems start with John Goodman, who's a terrific actor, but he's miscast in the titular role of the man-child who started as a pitcher with the Red Sox and then became an outfielder with the Yankees. It also doesn't help that this gregarious, larger-than-life baseball legend is depicted as moody, needy and a sad sack for most of this lifeless film. The biggest crime of all though is how much Arthur Hiller and his team stretched the truth (or messed up the chronology of momentous events) about Ruth's incredible real-life story. We got very pedantic about those facts and figures. So shrug off the non-stop insults about your weight because it's clear that you're a natural who just likes to hit home runs as we shuffle our way through the glum disappointment of a biopic they call The Babe.   We don't mind if you keeds tweet us.

Today on the show we have director Raja Gosnell. He directed comedy classics like Big Momma's House starring Martin Lawrence, Never Been Kissed starring Drew Berrymore, and Yours, Mine & Ours starring Dennis Quaid.Raja is best known as the director who brought not one but two beloved children's cartoons to the big screen, Scooby-Doo and The Smurfs. We also discuss the original vision that Raja and writer James Gunn had for Scooby-Doo. Let's say we finally understand why Scoob and Shaggy always had the munchies. He also directed the relatively low-budget runaway hit Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Raja's films have grossed almost $2 billion at the worldwide box-office.Raja wasn't always a director, he started his film career as an assistant editor in the late 1970s. His first credit as a film's main editor was the romantic comedy The Lonely Guy (1984), for director Arthur Hiller. During the 1980s, Gosnell served as editor in films directed by Tom Laughlin, David Worth, Bob Dahlin, Bert Convy, Christopher Leitch, Annabel Jankel, Rocky Morton, Phillip Schuman, and Chris Columbus. For Chris Columbus he edited the comedy film Heartbreak Hotel (1988), which features a 1970s teenager kidnapping singer Elvis Presley, to bring home as a gift for his mother.

The boys review the Arthur Hiller film, the Lonely Guy, which follows Larry Hubbard through the ups and downs of dating in Manhattan in the 80's. How has it held up? Or rather, HAS it held up? And where does it rank with some of the other Steve Martin offerings when he still had some pepper mixed in with all of that salt. So put aside that mechanical chess board and come listen! “If there’s ever anything that you need, don’t call me.” For Colin Higgins’ second film, he wanted to write something that had a Hitchcockian flair, and he was partial to the thrillers on trains. What we got – and what Arthur Hiller deftly directed – was Silver Streak. What we also got was the legendary comedy pairing of Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, two comedians who would end up making three more films together after this. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Colin Higgins series with Hiller’s 1976 train thriller Silver Streak. We talk about Pryor and Wilder and if blackface comedy is still something we’re allowed to laugh at, especially when the actors are so clearly pointing out that it’s not okay. We chat about the thrills balanced with the comedy in this film and how well it works. We look at Wilder and Pryor, but also Jill Clayburgh, Patrick McGoohan, Ned Beatty, Clifton James, Scatman Crothers, Ray Walston, Valerie Curtin, and Richard Kiel, to see what they’re all bringing to the table. We touch on Henry Mancini’s score and the vibes it brings. And we look at the many tropes throughout this film, wondering if they work well here because at the time, they likely weren’t as commonly used as they came to be. It’s a fun film and we have a great time talking about it on this week’s show, so check it out then tune in. The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins. By 1984, Steve Martin had played an idiot, a down-on-his-luck sheet music salesman in 30s Chicago, a noir detective, and a mad scientist – quite a variety of characters, though all very specific in their characterizations. Because of that, seeing him play a pretty normal, non-affected straight guy in Arthur Hiller’s comedy The Lonely Guy almost seemed a bit of a surprise. Surely, Martin was looking for a variety of parts so he could show off what we could do, so it makes sense. The film didn’t end up being a success, but it still allowed Martin the chance to play something a bit different yet again. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Steve Martin series with Hillers’ 1984 film The Lonely Guy. We talk about why a lot of this film doesn’t work, but why parts of it do work. We look at why comedy beats with Dr. Joyce Brothers may work (or not, depending on your take), but how her presence does seem to date the film a bit. We look at the team behind some of the technical elements, including composer Jerry Goldsmith. And we look at other cast members like Charles Grodin and Judith Ivey and chat about what works with their performances versus Martin’s. It’s a tricky little film that feels at times like the parts are better than the sum. Regardless, it has some great comedic beats, even if the tone is a mess. We have a great time talking about it on this week’s show so check it out then tune in. The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins. Shelley Long plays prissy longtime acting student Lauren Ames who has never gotten an actual gig, finally finding some hope when she makes her way into a prestigious drama class led by an all-time great international acting coach. Bette Midler co-stars as Sandy Brozinsky, a mouthy, earthy waitress who also suddenly finds herself in the same class without any of the talent or desire to be there. The two have a personality clash immediately that only gets worse once it is discovered that they are both in a relationship with the same dreamboat of a man, Michael Santers (Peter Coyote), who ends up faking his death for reasons the ladies have to put aside their petty differences to discover, mostly to make him choose between them. Their collaborative adventure sees them go on a cross-country trip only to find that there is so much more to Michael they never knew, something which gets them on the run from KGB agents and the CIA to hopefully come out alive, with the MacGuffin being a toxin that can destroy all vegetation within miles with just a few drops. Arthur Hiller directs from a Leslie Dixon script.

Back in 1970, apparently love meant never having to say you were sorry. Or so Love Story, that year’s popular tearjerker, would have us believe. The film was directed by Arthur Hiller from a screenplay by Erich Segal, who also wrote the accompanying novel. Each week one of the Story Grid Editors—Jarie Bolander, Valerie Francis, Anne Hawley, Kim Kessler, or Leslie Watts—pitches a film as an example of a significant story principle. The rest of us explore different aspects of the story so we can all understand it better.Click here for the full show notes.
