I can't imagine riding the rails with hundreds of fourth graders. That's just not my vibe. But my guest this week, Julie Esty, lived it this past summer. Dressed in period costume, she and some friends hopped aboard a locomotive that departed from Steamtown National Historic Site to educate school kids and adults about the history of northeast PA. Once she hung up the dress of a coal miner's wife, she headed to her attic for a costume change and began prepping for this year's The Dunmore Cemetery Tour, a wonderfully informative and entertaining walk through local history. Costumed interpreters tell stories of NEPA's past in vignettes along the tour route in the Dunmore Cemetery. Tune in to hear this conversation with a woman who makes history fun. We always share a lot of laughs when I hear what Julie has been up to. If you can be in NEPA on Sundays, 9/29 and 10/6, head to the Dunmore Cemetery Tour. It's free and FUN! Gang Busters 44-07-14 (374) The Case of the Costumed Killer
Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy want to join a union. Costumed character actors in Disneyland want to unionize like their Walt Disney World counterparts. It turns out that living in the OC is expensive. Who knew? But will Disney use the opportunity to upcharge guests and lay off workers? ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com ➡️ Audio Edition: https://open.spotify.com/show/6qJc5C6OkQkaZnGCeuVOD1 ➡️ Gaming News: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A7VIqE3r5MQkFgL9nifNc Additional Context: In a magical turn of events that feels straight out of a storybook, Disneyland's very own Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy—alongside their fellow costumed character performers—are making headlines not for their usual antics in the Happiest Place on Earth but for their move to unionize. The performers, under the enchanting banner of "Magic United," have voiced their intent to join forces with Actors' Equity Association, a labor union representing professionals in live theatrical performances. This move is not just a whimsical quest for better costumes or more enchanting parade routes; it's a serious bid for fair wages, benefits, and working conditions, echoing the sentiments of their counterparts in Walt Disney World who have long enjoyed the benefits of unionization. The tale unfolds in Anaheim, where the cost of living in Orange County (OC) is no fairy tale, prompting these beloved characters to seek a happier ending to their employment saga. Actors' Equity Association, with a magical ensemble of over 51,000 professional actors and stage managers, has cast its support spell, aiming for voluntary recognition from Disney Resort Entertainment. Should Disney choose not to recognize the union willingly, Equity plans to take the battle to the National Labor Relations Board, wielding the power of union authorization cards signed by a majority of the workforce. The plot thickens with Disney's recent history of labor disputes, including animation workers seeking to unionize last November and the impact of the 118-day SAG-AFTRA strike last year. The performers at Disneyland are standing firm, with the belief that the values of loyalty and investment they share with the Walt Disney Company should be reciprocated with fair pay and prioritization of their health and safety. While this unfolding narrative brings to light the struggles faced by those who bring magic to life, it raises questions about the broader implications for Disney and its guests. Will this move to unionize lead to an increase in park admission fees as Disney navigates the financial implications? Or could it result in layoffs as the company adjusts its operational costs? Only time will tell how this tale will end, but one thing is clear: the characters we've grown up loving are fighting for a fairy tale ending of their own. She drank her coffee, chatted with her husband, and started preparing for a garage sale in her driveway while it was still dark outside. At 6:53 AM, a mysterious black truck pulled up to her home, where an unknown suspect, captured on camera, exited the truck and charged towards Liz in her driveway. The mystery person appeared to be wearing go-go boots, a light-colored dress, and a dark, long wig. After a brief exchange of words lasting 9 seconds, the suspect fatefully pulled out a revolver and shot Liz four times before fleeing the scene. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Oct 31st Publish Date: Oct 30th Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Tuesday, October 31st and Happy heavenly Birthday to actor John Candy. ***UNCLE BUCK – PRINCIPAL MOLLEY*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia Marietta Man Acquitted of Rape Charge Hundreds of Books Removed from Cobb School Libraries Since Early August, Records Show Suspect in mass shooting found dead, drawing 'sigh of relief' in Maine All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Marietta Man Acquitted of Rape Charge A man who had been incarcerated for nearly four years was acquitted of a rape charge from a June 2017 allegation in Cobb County, Georgia. A jury returned a verdict of not guilty in the case of Jorge Candido Martines. Martines was accused of rape by a 17-year-old girl, but her testimony fell apart under further questioning. The accuser's story changed significantly just 72 hours before the trial, when she claimed that Martines had used a knife during the assault, which was a stark contrast to her original account. The change in her story, combined with the timing, damaged her credibility, leading to the acquittal. STORY 2: Hundreds of Books Removed from Cobb School Libraries Since Early August, Records Show Hundreds of books have been removed from high school libraries in the Cobb County School District in Georgia since the start of the school year. Lists of books removed from libraries, obtained through an Open Records Act request, show variations between schools. Some books considered controversial and contested were removed, including those deemed sexually explicit. Several books related to gender, sexuality, race, and censorship were also removed. High-profile book removals in Cobb and other school districts have come amid cultural and political battles. Some argue for the inclusion of certain books, while others push for their removal. This issue reflects a broader cultural war in the United States. Jeff Hubbard, president of the Cobb County Association of Educators, suggests that greater transparency is needed regarding book removals. The Cobb County School District has not provided reasons for removing specific books. STORY 3: Suspect in mass shooting found dead, drawing 'sigh of relief' in Maine A mass shooting in Maine that left 18 people dead has come to an end as the suspect, Robert Card, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The shooting took place in a bowling alley and bar-restaurant, making it the deadliest mass shooting in the US this year. The victims ranged in age from a 14-year-old boy to a husband and wife in their 70s. Authorities had launched a massive manhunt for Card, who was described as "armed and dangerous." The shooting had brought fear to southern Maine, but with Card's death, the community can begin to heal. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG – ELON – THE MARKET STORY 4: ARC Survey: Economy and Crime Top Issues Facing Metro ATL, Cobb Residents Say According to the Atlanta Regional Commission's 2023 Metro Atlanta Speaks Survey, Cobb County residents identify the economy and crime as the two most pressing issues facing metro Atlanta. Similar findings were reported for the broader Atlanta region. In Cobb County, 30% of respondents considered the economy the most pressing issue, while 28% cited crime. Crime ranked first for the 11-county region (27%), followed by the economy (24%). Despite crime being a concern for Cobb residents, 47% of them said they feel safe walking at night in their neighborhood. The survey also revealed insights into residents' views on electric vehicles, climate change, and artificial intelligence. STORY 5: McCormick: Georgia Can Draw New Congressional Map and Protect Incumbents U.S. Rep. Rich McCormick, a Republican representing northeast Cobb County, has expressed that the court-ordered redrawing of Georgia's congressional map may not necessarily result in additional Democratic members of Congress. This comes after a federal judge rejected Georgia's previous congressional and state legislative redistricting maps, siding with civil rights and voting rights groups' claims that the maps violated the Voting Rights Act. The judge ordered the General Assembly to draw new maps to comply with the law and provide equal opportunity for Black Georgians to participate in the political process. McCormick believes it's possible to create four minority districts while maintaining a 9-5 Republican-Democrat congressional split. He is also concerned about the judge's specific instructions regarding a majority-Black district in "west-metro Atlanta" and fears that it might lead to the rejection of the legislature's new map. Despite the challenges, McCormick is prepared to defend his seat in a competitive general election. We'll be back in a moment Break: DAYCO – DRAKE – POWERS STORY 6: Residents Curious About Timeline for Cobb Transit Tax The Cobb Department of Transportation is in the planning stages of a Mobility Special-Purpose Local-Option Sales Tax (M-SPLOST) for a 2024 transit tax referendum. Residents have provided feedback on the proposal. There are two plans being considered, one for a 30-year 1% sales tax, and the other for a 10-year version. The 30-year plan aims to collect $10.9 billion, with the focus on expanding the transit system in the first decade, and then maintaining it and paying off debt in the following 20 years. The 10-year plan would collect $2.8 billion and create a more modest transit program within that period. Attendees at an open house expressed interest in high-capacity transit and microtransit expansion, as well as prioritizing options for senior populations. Cobb Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Lisa Cupid supports the 30-year tax. Residents are offering feedback and emphasizing the importance of clear objectives for the transit tax proposal. STORY 7: Costumed canines converge in Kennesaw contest Nova, a bumblebee-clad dog accompanied by the Marie family in matching insect-themed costumes, claimed first place in the Smith-Gilbert Gardens' Doggie Day Halloween Parade. Around a dozen families participated in the parade, with dogs dressed in various creative costumes. The event aimed to provide local dog owners with an enjoyable way to explore the botanical gardens, extending accessibility to the community. The gardens' new executive director, Dave Simpson, expressed enthusiasm for continuing and expanding such events to make the gardens a welcoming space for dogs and their owners. The pollinator theme of Nova and the Marie family may have contributed to their victory, given the gardens' focus on promoting pollinator activity. Jane Fonda embodied the girl next store in the early 1960s and a sex kitten in the latter half of the decade. By the time the 1970s rolled around she became the "real woman" type that embodied the realism and political uncertainty of the new decade. In this episode I talk about two of her transitional films- They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and Klute. The latter marks the beginning of the neo-noir era. Fonda's character Bree Daniels wardrobe marked a tide change in American Fashion. Costumed by Ann Roth, Klute is as important visually as it was culturally. This week's resources are Jane Fonda's biography " My Life So Far". and the HBO doc "Jane Fonda In Five Acts." In addition to a lifetime of collected imagery, articles and common knowledge about the American Royalty that is Jane Fonda.

This week, we cover cases where killers donned Halloween costumes and/or masks to commit their crimes! Featuring a family annihilator with a terrifying mask, a wild love triangle, and a knock on the door from a killer clown. Hello there Twisted Listeners! We're back with another Halloween themed list, and now that it's officially October, we're getting into the heavier stuff! This week we're looking at murderers who used costumes to disguise their devilish deeds (though none actually dressed up as devils, ironically). We have a killer clown potentially still on the loose (or at least not in prison for this murder), a family annihilator who added insult to injury, a would be serial killer stopped by his own parole officer, and a case involving way too many cops to not be solved (it is). So tune in for some Halloweeny goodness, and, as always, stay off our lists!Check out our website! www.twistedlisterspod.comBrought to you by Podmoth Media Network podmoth.networkJoin us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/twistedlistersFollow us on Instagram: @twistedlisterspcastTiktok: @twistedlistersCases Covered:1. Gang Busters was an American dramatic radio program aired from January 15, 1936 to November 27, 1957 on NBC. The show, one of the earliest crime shows on radio, was created by actor-producer Phillips Lord. Each episode began with loud sound effects like gun fires and tire screeches, which led to the catch phrase "come on like Gang Busters." And then, at the end of each episode were the description of each criminal captured and some information on those who were still on the loose. During its entire run, hundreds of criminals were brought to justice, courtesy of the Gang Busters. On today's episode of Cinemallennials, I talked with Will Pender, host of Now that's What I call a podcast about the silent horror classic, The Phantom of the Opera starring the Man of a Thousand Faces, Lon Chaney, and the original scream queen, Mary Philbin. Lon Chaney paved the way for all of our favorite grotesque but deeply human onscreen characters. Costumed and made up creatures like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Apes from The Planet of the Apes, The Elephant Man, Jar Jar Binks, The Amphibian Man from The Shape of Water and one of my all-time favorites, Gollum/Sméagol could have never been realized if Lon Chaney and his makeup never appeared on screen. Based on Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel, The Phantom of the Opera follows the story of Christine Daae, a young singer who for years has been tutored by a kindly masked figure, known to her as Spirit of Music but known to everyone else as The Phantom of the Opera, a shadowy spirit that causes chaos when his musical sensibilities are disturbed by the Opera's owners. Defied once more and thought to have been betrayed by his muse, our, sometimes recognized as an empathetic figure, the Phantom goes on a rampage claiming if he can't have Christine, no one can. So sit back, relax, and befriend the outcast. Cinemallennials is a podcast where myself and another millennial are introduced to a classic film for the very first time ranging from the birth of cinema to the 1960s. Myself and my guest will open your eyes to the vast landscape of classic film as we discuss the films' performers, their performances, those behind the camera, and how they and their films still influence our world today. This week, we continue with our Halloween-themed episodes and we’ve got cases inspired by disguises…because on Halloween you dress up in a costume, aka a disguise. Okay, it’s a bit of a stretch but hang in there, it’s a great episode. Rachel tells us the story of Jody Harris, Australia’s infamous “Catch Me If You Can Thief”. Jody stole the identities of various women by swiping their identification and draining their bank accounts. Jody pretended to be an airline hostess, a policewoman, a doctor, as well as pretending to be the women themselves. Nathalie then tells the story of Sheila Keen Warren. Sheila is accused of killing Marlene Warren. Marlene was shot to death by a killer clown in 1990. Although the case has been unsolved for many years, DNA evidence led to Sheila’s arrest nearly 30 years after the crime. Sheila is currently awaiting trial as her trial date has been postponed to 2021 due to COVID. It's no surprise that most Halloween stories delve into the dark corners and shadows of life. That premise is in the very name of the holiday. Originally known as All Hallows' Eve, it's celebrated just before All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day — two holidays meant to honor the dead. For thousands of years, people all over the world have remembered the lost with candles, rituals, costumes, and revelry. The best Halloween stories produce tingles up the back of the neck, while also, maybe, breaking one's heart just a little bit. After all, good scares and sorrow often go hand-in-ghostly-hand. In this episode, we get curious about Halloween traditions and explore the lore around classic creepy creatures., Then we recommend books that celebrate the spirit (and spirits) of Halloween, including stories for self-proclaimed scaredy-cats, titles that should come with a 'don't read this at night' warning label,' and a few in-between. Trick or treat! We also talk to horror legend Steve Bissette, illustrator of 'The Swamp Thing' and writer of both fiction and non-fiction works that'll scare the pants off you. For more on the books we recommend, plus the other cool stuff we talk about, visit show notes at http://strongsenseofplace.com/podcasts/2020-10-19-halloween. Books we talked about include: Dracula by Bram Stoker The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving Pine by Francine Toon Basic Witch: Witches of Salem by Harmony Hart Bunnicula: A Rabbit Tale of Mystery by Deborah Howe, James Howe Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds Something Wicked This Way Comes: A Novel by Ray Bradbury Small Spaces by Katherine Arden As always, you can follow us at: Our web site at Strong Sense of Place Twitter Instagram Facebook

Better get your ties on, because it's time to talk about Gangster Squad. Spencer and Ethan discuss the campy 2013 film about how a group of cops took down Mickey Cohen and his gang back in 1949. Costumed by Mary Zophres, the style of the film is interesting; there are period accurate double breasted suits and ties, but a few liberties with the lapels and shirt collars. It's almost as much a throw back to the gangster films of the 90s as it is a send up of the ones from the 40s and 50s. Listen in as we analyze the menswear and some of our favorite cheesy quotes from this flick. If you were to think of your costumed alter-ego as a creature, it’s unlikely you’d immediately conjure an image of a bat, and yet as this super niche episode demonstrates, bats have long been – and continue to be – popular subjects for dressing up, and not simply as Batman or Batwoman.
