Matt Pohlson, co-founder and CEO of Omaze, has had one of the most death defying startup journeys ever. Time and time again, his company has been on the brink of death, only to be saved by Matt's persistence and never-quit attitude. While most involved nearly running out of funds, one experience involved his own near death experience as he flatlined on an ER bed with his family surrounding him. Persistence brought him back from the brink and eventually back to Omaze where he used an even stronger belief in their mission to lead a Series B fundraise in March of 2020 just as COVID began impacting the world.-----If you're looking for more fundraising content, grab my weekly newsletter packed full of strategies and insights around how to raise money: fundedpod.com/newsletter

Matthew Pohlson is founder of Omaze, a cause marketplace that raises money and awareness for charity, offering chances to win once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Pohlson and his partner hatched the idea after losing out on a chance to shoot hoops with Magic Johnson at a charity auction. Omaze, a for-profit fundraising juggernaut, has raised over $150 million for charity by selling chances at wildest-dream experiences like going on a double date on Lake Como with Amal and George Clooney. Join us as Matthew tells us how, down to his last week of funds for this “Big idea” he convinced Breaking Bad’s Brian Cranston, to take a chance on the start-up— putting it on course to become the go-to charity partner to the worlds most popular philanthropists .
This week, a conversation with Omaze co-founder and CEO Ryan Cummins. Omaze is an online fundraising platform that offers once-in-a-lifetime experiences and exclusive merchandise in support of charitable causes. They've worked with a who's-who of A-list celebrities, including the cast of Game of Thrones, George Clooney, the gang from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia... and that’s barely scratching the surface . But what Omaze really does is tell stories. Their philanthropic model relies on getting consumers excited, and they do that through their incredibly creative campaigns. They've raised more than $150M for over 400 different charities. Now that’s impact. If you’re a mission-driven brand, you need to leverage the power of storytelling in order to move your mission forward. That’s what this episode is about. Takeaways How storytelling and philanthropy inspired Ryan to found Omaze with partner Matt Pohlson. Why Omaze practices radical candor when it comes to providing feedback, and an easy tactic to ensure feedback is communicated effectively. How to become an effective leader, and how to continually improve your leadership skills. How to transform fear and self-doubt into a powerful tool of self transformation. That’s right, Matt Pohlson. Cal sits with the founder of Omaze, a company that has helped raise $130 million for roughly 350 charities through donations made by people looking for a chance to win once in a lifetime experiences with the people they dream of meeting. Drink wine with Jennifer Lawrence. Get in a tank with Arnold Schwarzenegger and go crush things. Go on a double date with George and Amal Clooney. These events can lead to extraordinary stories. When Matt tells them they get better and better . . . and then Matt describes what it was like when he flatlined for four minutes, and came back from the edge of death, and how it changed his life. By the end, you’ll see why this is one of Cal’s favorite episodes.

For those of you who have been with me and the show from the beginning, you may remember Kimi Culp - Episode 2, my first guest back in 2017. If you haven't heard that one yet, you need to go listen, but here are the highlights: Kimi was a journalist of the highest quality, having had long stints working for Oprah, and then Diane Sawyer. She got burnt out on the kinds of stories she was reporting on, had kids.... She then came back into the workforce to tell the story of one of her best friend's husband, former New Orleans Saint football player Steve Gleason, with the amazing documentary: Gleason, about his emotional and inspiring battle with ALS (Kimi does nothing halfway - that film made a record sale to Amazon at Sundance and has made major waves). And, now, she's reinventing herself yet again, with her new podcast, All the Wiser, which launched Wednesday, April 3rd. The purpose of this conversation, originally, was to help get the word out so more people could experience Kimi's podcast. But it's also a conversation about what it takes to launch something, the attention to detail required if you want something to be top-quality, the process of learning about how to do something new only by actually doing it, the power of being intentional... and the constant battle with your own inner-critic when it comes to exposing yourself in a way you've never quite done before. Matt is the co-founder and CEO of Omaze. His company has raised over 130 million dollars for charities by auctioning off once in a lifetime experiences — think a walk-on role in Star Wars or being George Clooney’s date on the Red Carpet! He opens up about what changed everything for him: a near death experience that left him flatlining and in a coma. Matt shares how his mom saved his life, his experience on “the other side” and how he views his relationships and company in an entirely new light. In honor of Matt's story we are donating $2000 to Folds of Honor. IN TODAY’S EPISODE Signs that something was wrong (6:50) Flatlining for 5 minutes and his experience on “the other side” (11:33) The machine and doctors that saved his life (21:43) How his mom’s presence and strength as witnessed her son flatline (27:33) Matt finally has a 2nd date with his now girlfriend in his hospital room (33:09) WISE WORDS They didn't know her son. It was this very spiritual experience for her. She said it was like ... and it just gave her this strength, and so she gathered herself, and she turned back to the table, and she started coaching me. Coaching me back. She said, "Matthew David Pohlson, these people are fighting to save your life. They are fighting so hard to save your life, but you're not fighting hard enough. You gotta fight, Matthew David Pohlson! You gotta show them that you're a fighter! You gotta fight to come back! These people are fighting to save your life." (11:09) And I remember just fighting and fighting and fighting, and just like, it felt like an infinitely long journey. Then I remember the moment of just like, bursting back into the world, and feeling that feeling of ... oh, my gosh, the journey. I'm here. I'm back. And looking at my mom, and looking at my dad, and then, there's just like, this moment of pure joy. Where I felt connected to everything in the world, all at once. (15:06) I mean, I was gone. All the doctors were saying, I was gone. I was out of that body. Because they said, it's very uncommon, or not very uncommon ... they've never seen someone flatline, and then, open up their eyes, and lift their hand and give a thumbs up. (15:49) "But do you remember what you wrote?" I said, "No." He said, "You wrote, the first thing you wrote was, 'Tell my mom that I fought so hard." (29:57) "Look, before you leave, I want you to understand something. When I finish my career, 30 years from now, and I'm talking about the most extraordinary case I've ever seen, this is gonna be it.” (33:55) I would say everything you want is on the other side of fear. We create these fears so often for our self, that get in the way of so much that we want to do, or people we want to love, or ... but know that, and when you overcome that fear, just know that the love you put out can change people's lives in ways that you may never be able to see, but it matters. Matt Pohlson, co-founder and co-CEO of Omaze, desperately wanted to have dinner with Magic Johnson. He also wanted to save the world. How did his jump accomplish both?

Matt Pohlson had an eye-opening experience after he and his business school buddy, Ryan Cummins, attended a charity auction where they hoped to bid on their dream experience: the chance to play basketball with Magic Johnson. As broke grad students, they were quickly outbid. That’s when they realized there might be a better way to raise money for charity, and a way to make amazing experiences accessible to anyone with $10 and a dream. They barely had more than that when they turned their passion into the online charity platform Omaze. Sponsored by Ally Financial.

What if donating to charity meant that you could win the experience of your dreams; like flying around the world to party with your favorite band, a role in a blockbuster movie, or having lunch 1-on-1 with your idol? Would you be more inclined to give to a good cause and would charities raise more money? Matt Pohlson (@mattpohlson) set out to find answers to those questions when he co-founded Omaze.com, an online platform offering donors the chance to win once-in-a-lifetime experiences when they contribute to a charity. After five years, hundreds of campaigns, and millions of dollars raised, the answer is a resounding, “Yes!” I caught up with Matt today and got to hear what the past 5 years have been like and more. We talk about his transition from politics, to Hollywood and then entrepreneurship. We discuss the power of storytelling and the role it’s played throughout Matt’s life. Matt shares his thoughts on when to persevere and when to quit and gives us a look into the sacrifices required when becoming a founder. It’s a solid reality check for anyone considering entrepreneurship. In parting, I ask Matt about his hopes for the future to which he responded beautifully, “That I continue to live without fear and to love…and when it’s all said and done, I can look back and say that I used my gifts to the greatest degree possible.”
