For white-collar workers, the recent headlines about AI are more than a little bit fear-inducing. AI could automate millions of white-collar jobs within 18 months. College graduates are booing commencement speakers who bring it up. And women — whose jobs are three times more likely to be automated — are falling behind on AI adoption. So what do you actually do? Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist Jodi Kantor has answers. Her new book, How to Start: Discovering Your Life's Work, grew out of a question her Columbia University students asked her that she couldn't shake: how, in this environment, are we supposed to find our life's work? The answer, it turns out, applies just as much to a woman reinventing herself at 52 as it does to a 22-year-old just starting out. In this episode, Jean and Jodi get into: The two things every successful, happy person has: craft and need Why your messy, nonlinear résumé might be your biggest asset right now How to get a real human being to respond to your job outreach in the age of AI screening Jodi's three tips for cold outreach that actually work And if you're thinking about what your financial future looks like through all of this change, pre-order Jean's new book, The Forever Paycheck — your guide to building income that lasts as long as you do. Marine veteran and recruiting entrepreneur Bob Howard joins me to unpack a simple but brutal metaphor: “If you get dead, walk it off.”It's a line Marines joke about with each other — part dark humor, part survival mindset. But it's also an accurate description of what career transitions often feel like.In this conversation, Bob and I walk through the realities behind one of the most misunderstood roles in the military: Marine Corps recruiting. On the surface, recruiters look polished and professional. Behind the scenes, the job is a relentless sales environment with uncompromising quotas, long nights, and constant pressure to perform.Bob spent years navigating that system while also dealing with the unexpected reality that his own Marine Corps career would end sooner than expected due to injury. That meant managing the demanding recruiting pipeline while simultaneously trying to figure out how to transition into civilian life on a compressed timeline. We unpack what that pressure looks like from the inside: selling one of the toughest military commitments to skeptical teenagers and their parents, operating under strict eligibility standards, and hitting monthly quotas where past success doesn't buy you future forgiveness. But the conversation goes deeper than military recruiting.Bob shares how the consultative selling skills he learned in the Marine Corps became the foundation for his civilian career in recruiting and talent consulting. Understanding motivation, asking better questions, and aligning offers with what people actually want — those lessons translate far beyond military service. We also explore the psychological reality of career transitions. Many professionals assume organizations will take care of their long-term path. The truth is more uncomfortable: no one manages your career better than you.Bob's story highlights the messy middle between structured institutions and the unpredictable civilian world — a period filled with hard lessons, misaligned expectations, and eventually, reinvention. This episode isn't about military nostalgia. It's about resilience, adaptability, and learning how to rebuild direction when the plan you thought you had suddenly disappears. The lesson isn't pretending the hit didn't happen. It's learning how to stand back up and keep moving.TL;DR• Marine Corps recruiting is one of the most demanding sales jobs in the military• Recruiters operate under strict quotas and relentless monthly performance pressure• Military career transitions often happen faster than expected• Consultative selling skills translate directly into civilian entrepreneurship• Understanding what people truly want is the core of effective sales• Many professionals assume organizations will manage their career paths• The reality: long-term career responsibility belongs to the individual• Reinvention often comes from adapting hard-earned skills to new environmentsMemorable Lines“If you get dead, walk it off.”“Past performance doesn't buy you forgiveness in recruiting — every month starts at zero.”“No one will ever take care of your career better than you.”“Understanding what motivates someone is the key to selling anything.”“Preparedness isn't about predicting the future — it's about being ready when it changes.”GuestBob Howard — Founder of Magic Talent SolutionsFormer Marine Corps recruiter turned talent consultant helping professionals and companies navigate hiring, career development, and interview preparation.

In this episode, Paula Amato joins Rhonda for an honest conversation about career reinvention, non-linear paths, and trusting long-term evolution over quick wins. Paula Amato, a seasoned PR and communications professional, shares how she transitioned from the music industry into wellness, storytelling, and ultimately transformational travel. Together, they explore career pivots, identity shifts, and what it really takes to build a meaningful professional life rooted in purpose, curiosity, and personal growth.Key Takeaways:Why career pivots often unfold over years, not months, and why patience mattersHow transferable skills like storytelling and communication unlock new industriesThe power of staying in a beginner's mindset during career transitionsWhy financial planning and timing are critical when leaving corporate rolesHow authentic brand building starts with self-trust, not external validationWhat transformational travel teaches us about growth, leadership, and perspectiveMeet Paula AmatoPaula Amato is a seasoned PR and communications professional whose career spans music and the arts, wellbeing, social impact, and transformational travel. After launching her career in the music industry at a young age, Paula later moved into independent consulting, where she explored wellness, functional medicine, and personal development. Over time, those interests naturally intersected with her communications expertise, opening the door to transformational travel and purpose-driven work.“My trajectory has not been linear, but every phase taught me something I needed for the next one.”Rather than forcing a fast transition, Paula allowed her pivot to unfold gradually. She spent years learning a new industry, building relationships, and redefining her role—proving that sustainable reinvention often requires curiosity, humility, and the willingness to sit in uncertainty.Insights for Ambitious WomenOne of Paula's most powerful lessons is that career transitions don't require abandoning your past, they require reframing it. She encourages women to recognize their transferable skills and trust that experience gained in one industry often becomes the foundation for success in another.“We all underestimate ourselves. If you grew up thinking adulthood meant “figure it out once and then coast,” this episode is your loving wake-up call. Reinvention isn't a plot twist anymore — it is the plot. Careers shift, relationships change, industries get AI'd, and your dreams evolve faster than your LinkedIn headline. In this conversation, I sit down with Ilana Golan — F-16 flight instructor turned tech exec turned founder & CEO of Leap Academy, a career reinvention platform that helps driven professionals leap into leadership, entrepreneurship, and portfolio careers. We talk about what it actually takes to reinvent yourself (again and again), build a portfolio career that doesn't burn you out, and turn your hardest seasons into rocket fuel instead of reasons to shrink. Because staying stuck isn't a personality trait. It's a habit. And you're allowed to outgrow it. In This Episode, We Cover: Reinvention as a life skill, not a crisis – why you'll need to reinvent every 1–2 years in today's world, and how to stop making that mean you did something wrong. IQ, EQ, and now AQ (Adaptability Quotient) – the new metric that matters Breadcrumbs & clues – how to spot your zone of genius in the patterns, feedback, and “random” skills you've picked up along the way. From failure to fuel – how Ilana rebuilt after being kicked out of her own company, and how to move from spiral to experiment when life blows up. The 5 days / 5 weeks / 5 months framework – a simple, non-scary way to test new directions without burning your life to the ground. Portfolio careers 101 – what they are, why one job won't meet all your needs, and how to add new income/impact streams without looking like a confused hot mess. Stability and possibility – how to choose a “baseline” role or revenue stream so you feel safe enough to play, experiment, and leap. Reinvention after rejection, grief, or trauma – why you can't tell your story from the open wound, and how to move from bleeding to scar to superpower. Because the moment you stop chasing the life you think you should want, you finally make space for the one that was meant for you all along. Thank you to our sponsors! Send us a textWhat happens when your dream career no longer fits your life? Shannon Russell faced this question after a successful run as a television producer at MTV and in Hollywood. When motherhood shifted her priorities, Shannon made the bold decision to walk away from the entertainment industry and forge a new entrepreneurial path.Shannon's story breaks the conventional wisdom that we must stay in our lane. Coming from a blue-collar family where her parents worked the same jobs their entire lives, she was the first to attend college and leave her hometown. Her journey took her from broadcast communications student to television producer in New York and Los Angeles, living what many would consider a glamorous dream job.The birth of her first child changed everything. Suddenly, the demanding schedule, constant travel, and intense pressure of television production conflicted with her desire to be present for her family. Rather than seeing this as the end of her ambitions, Shannon viewed it as an opportunity to write a new chapter. Despite well-meaning interventions from industry friends and her husband, she trusted her instincts and began exploring entrepreneurial options.Shannon found her next act in purchasing a children's STEM education franchise—what she calls a "business in a box" that provided structure and support for a first-time business owner. Within two years, she ranked among the top three franchisees in the organization. As her business flourished, she discovered a passion for helping other women, particularly mothers, navigate similar career transitions.Today, Shannon runs Second Act Success, coaching women to leverage their professional experience to build businesses that provide both fulfillment and flexibility. Her new book "Start Your Second Act: How to Change Careers, Build a Business and Create Your Best Life" launches May 7th, and her podcast features inspiring stories of women who've successfully reinvented themselves professionally.Shannon's message is powerful in its simplicity: "Keep going, give yourself grace, and it will all work out." She encourages listeners to stop being sheep, pursue their unique paths, and believe in their ability to create multiple successful chapters in life. Hiring used to be about handshakes—now it's about hacking the system. Mary Shea, GM of Hire Quotient and former co-CEO of Mediafly, spills the secrets of modern hiring, from decoding hidden talent pools to avoiding AI's résumé black hole. Whether you're job hunting, recruiting, or just trying to figure out why no one calls back anymore, this episode is for you. Key Highlights of Our Interview: AI as a Recruiter's Right Hand “Offloading 75% of the recruiting workload, generative AI and automation work overtime, tackling bias and sourcing talent far beyond the usual platforms.” Beyond LinkedIn “Why limit your search to one platform? With integrations across tools like Crunchbase and Apollo, HireQuotient casts a wide net, uncovering passive and active candidates who often fly under the radar.” Championing Diversity “When male-dominated results dominated a recruiter's search, HireQuotient adapted with a few new prompts, demonstrating how AI can open doors for underrepresented talent.” White Glove Experience, AI-Style “Automation doesn't mean impersonal. By automating outreach and early-stage screening, recruiters had more time to build personal connections and keep candidates engaged.” Omnichannel Humanity “Use every channel, but never forget the power of face-to-face. It's not just networking; it's feeding your humanity.” The Human Advantage “AI might read resumes, but humans hire. Keep networking, stay visible, and remember that meaningful relationships can outlast any algorithm.” _________________________ Connect with us: Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Mary Shea PhD --Chief Change Officer-- Change Ambitiously. Who needs a solo act when you can have a dynamic duo? In Part Two of this series, Mary Shea, General Manager of Hire Quotient and former co-CEO of Mediafly, takes us inside the world of co-CEOship—a growing leadership trend that's part genius, part juggling act. Mary unpacks what makes it work: trust, complementary skills, and a shared vision. But she's also refreshingly candid about the pitfalls—slower decision-making, the need for a strong board, and why even the best co-leaders need a “business couples counselor.” If you're rethinking leadership structures, this one's for you. Key Highlights of Our Interview: AI's Impact on Sales Teams “AI is paving the way for smaller, more agile sales teams, moving away from the traditional 80/20 rule toward a future where 80% of the team delivers 100% of the revenue.” The Rise of the Consultant Seller “AI acts as a coach on the salesperson's shoulder, helping them become more advisory-oriented, and enabling deeper impact in customer interactions.” Why Two CEOs? “In today's complex world, no single leader can address everything, from geopolitical challenges to the rapid pace of AI innovation. The co-CEO model allows for a divide-and-conquer approach.” Challenges of Co-Leadership “Decision-making can be slower, and sometimes we wish we could just do things our way. But alignment is key, and when it works, it's incredibly impactful.” Who's the Umpire? “Our ‘umpire' is our investor and board. If we truly can't resolve a disagreement, we rely on their input as the ultimate decision-maker.” The Professional Marriage “Co-CEOship is like a professional marriage—it requires resilience, commitment, and sometimes even a ‘marriage counselor' in the form of an executive coach to navigate tough patches.” _________________________ Connect with us: Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Mary Shea PhD --Chief Change Officer-- Change Ambitiously. Mary Shea's career is proof that you don't have to stick to one soundtrack. From a classical musician to a leading voice in sales leadership, she's taken some bold risks—and in this first episode of a three-part series, she's sharing the lessons she learned along the way. As General Manager of Hire Quotient and former co-CEO of Mediafly, Mary is on a mission to amplify underrepresented voices and reshape sales leadership. With insights from her time at Forrester, she also dives into the digital transformation of sales and how creativity plays a bigger role in business than you might think. Key Highlights of Our Interview: From Music to Business “I started as a classical musician, playing with the Mexico City Philharmonic and Guadalajara Symphony. But when the career palette felt too small, I took a leap into business, changing my life forever.” Sales: The Great Equalizer “Sales is one of the few fields where hard work and skill can lead to financial independence, regardless of where you start. That independence allows you to make meaningful changes in your life and others'.” Playing Catch-Up with Purpose “Coming into the business world with a PhD put me 10 years behind my peers, but it also ignited a fire. I moved quickly, knowing every opportunity was critical to closing that gap.” Creating the Playbook “I'm not just about managing to a playbook—I love creating it. The intellectual stimulation of building strategies with teams and seeing them succeed is what drives me.” _________________________ Connect with us: Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Mary Shea PhD --Chief Change Officer-- Change Ambitiously. What would change if you decentered your career from your identity? Decentering your work from your identity might seem a counterintuitive topic for a podcast about career development, but burnout and disillusionment are running rampant these days, so it's not too surprising this concept is getting a lot of airtime. Our work should be important and provide us with purpose, but it shouldn't become the only important and purposeful part of who we are. Taking the spotlight off the career part of your identity gives you space and permission to respect the role of work in your life without requiring you to relinquish every part of yourself to your job. In this episode, I outline three considerations to help you realize this shift.Consider a more balanced alternative to living for your job:How community involvement contributes to who you are and will be;Why passive rest and renewal don't cut it, and what to try instead; Why you need to get real about the divide between your work identity and the rest of your life.Related Links:Episode 456, How Connection Can Cure What Ails Us - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode456Mondo, “Tips To Keep Your Job From Becoming Your Identity” - https://mondo.com/insights/tips-to-keep-your-job-from-becoming-your-identity/“Working Identity: Unconventional Strategies for Reinventing Your Career,” by Herminia Ibarras - https://herminiaibarra.com/working-identity-book/The Ezra Klein Show, “Tired? EPISODE SUMMARY: In this episode, we dive into the journey of turning setbacks into successes, especially for those who have been out of the job market for a significant period. Our guest John Tarnoff, a trusted advisor and thought leader, shares personal experiences from a career in the volatile entertainment industry, where being fired 39% of the time became a catalyst for reinvention. Drawing from years of teaching senior-level professionals how to secure great jobs despite ageism and a broken hiring system, John offers contrarian advice that challenges conventional wisdom: Don't follow your passion; find your usefulness. Passion is fleeting, but your skills and how you can be of service are enduring. Your resume won't get you hired. It's about demonstrating your value in ways that resonate beyond paper. Assessments are pointless. Focus on showcasing your real-world impact instead. Stop applying to jobs you can do; attract the jobs you were born to do. Your unique abilities and experiences make you the perfect fit for specific roles. Confidence comes last. Don't wait for it; act first and let confidence follow. We explore how to stop complaining about ageism and instead, actively demonstrate your value. This episode provides actionable insights on reinventing yourself, overcoming outdated business cultures, and navigating the job market with a fresh, empowered perspective. Tune in to learn how to transform your career setbacks into your most significant comebacks. A good friend of mine has worked in a particular sector for most of her career. From the outside she's one of those people who's life looks perfect. But more recently over a series of honest talks, she's confided in me that she hates her job. Has done for years. Naturally I've asked, “why don't you do something else?” She explained that there were a couple of big things keeping her stuck. Firstly, she doesn't know what she wants to do instead. She's been doing what she's been doing for so long, that at least she knows she's good at it. It feels terrifying to walk away from. This week on Tiger Therapy, I'm speaking to world authority on career transitions, who has been named one of the most influential business thinkers in the world.Herminia Ibarra is Professor of Organisational Behaviour at London Business School.
