Prior to this, Matt has worked at the University of Texas and University of Denver, designing and implementing speed, strength, conditioning, and mobility training programs for men's lacrosse, alpine ski, baseball, tennis, swimming and track and field. Matt talks to Rob about performance pillars, testing, and monitoring – subjects that he has recently written about in one of his many books, articles and blogs. This includes the metrics that sports scientists and coaches should be looking at in regards to GPS data, and the six physical performance qualities he looks for when measuring improvement. Matt further explains how to incorporate specialist training when faced with constraints, such as time. There's also some outstanding insight into a range of exercises and techniques, including triphasic training, oscillatory training, isometric exercises as a part of that, and understanding physics when it comes to power development. Matt also gives us some examples of further reading in these areas, which will be invaluable to any coach.   On the podcast this week: The metrics to be looking at when it comes to GPS How to test and monitor to see whether an athlete is improving Matt's 6 physical performance qualities How to incorporate sprints when faced with limited time Practical examples of preparing players when faced with constraints Triphasic training Oscillatory training Eccentric training Isometric exercises Understanding physics when it comes to power development

“When I talk with people, with other strength staffs, athletic training, or nutrition, it’s planting little seeds of discussion to kind of grow upon and then we start to tie a lot of our systems in based on their approach to what the end goal is.” Today we are joined by University of Texas, Associate Director of Applied Sports Science, Matt VanDyke. After an overview of where he’s been, his writings, and how he got to Texas Matt dives into how how relationships have driven him in both avenues, both coaching and the sport science realm. We then discuss the role of us as coaches to the profession, and how sharing info is so important to drive us forward. Matt then discusses the challenge the change of positions, from coaching to the applied sport science side, has been and how the transition from doing it all to just forcing on one is allowing him to dive deeper into things. Matt then shares with us some of the data that he’s looking at and how it’s contributing to the training programs for the football players at Texas. We finish off discussing how his time at Denver helped prep him for Texas, and some lessons he’s learned as mistakes at the spots where he’s had to hit the ground running. ENJOY THE CONTENT? Today’s guest is Cal Dietz, returning for his second appearance on the Just Fly Performance Podcast.  Two of Cal’s books, Triphasic Training (the original) and then the Triphasic Training manual for Football (written with Chris Korfist) have had a huge impact on my program writing.  I’ve seen Cal speak several times, and have always walked away with great new ideas on training and performance. Cal Dietz has been the Head Olympic Strength and Conditioning coach for numerous sports at the University of Minnesota since 2000.  He has consulted with Olympic and World Champions in various sports and professional athletes in the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, and Professional Boxing.  He runs the website xlathlete.com, and is one of the founders of the RPR (Reflexive Performance Reset) system.  Cal has been a mentor to dozens of up-and-coming strength coaches in the field, including 2-time podcast guest, Matt Van Dyke. In this episode, we get into a lot of nuts and bolts of Cal’s views on speed training, particularly assisted and resisted methods, jumping and plyometrics, cueing in the weightroom, as well as all topics of lifting and the posterior chain.  We’ll also get into training the feet, which has been a large interest of mine in the past year. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Assisted and resisted sprinting in context of French Contrast training Banded overspeed jumps Coaching foot contacts in jumping Lower leg strength building Specific foot cues for squatting History and application of oscillatory isometrics Benefits of advantageous vs. disadvantageous ranges in lifting New thoughts in hamstring training What it really means to have weak glutes Quotes “Squats are more for acceleration, hurdle hops are more for top end speed” “After that 3rd step there was nothing much I could do to mimic in the speed of the weight room, so that’s why I knew I had to unload the athlete by hooking the bands to the ceiling and do jumps” “We squat and we land with our knee in front of our toe, holding the arch of our foot up so it doesn’t collapse” “If that (foot) arch collapses, you go valgus, and then people blame the glute medius” “I’m not a big fan of drive squats through the heels, I think it drives the wrong pattern.  We keep the toe up on the way down, and then we squeeze the big toe into the ground and drive up which helps fire the glute and increase hip extension, and in every case, the bar moves faster” “For oscillatory isometrics, bench pressing is good, squats are OK, but I’d rather do an oscillatory heavy pitshark…. I like a single leg hex split squat” Show Notes Banded hamstring exercises for speed and power respectively. About Cal Dietz Cal Dietz has been the Head Olympic Strength and Conditioning coach for numerous sports at the University of Minnesota since 2000. He has consulted with Olympic and World Champions in various sports and professional athletes in the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, and Professional Boxing. During his time at U of M, he help founded and chairs the Sport Biomechanics Interest Group with its purpose to explore the physiological and biomechanical aspects of advanced human performance encompassing the various aspects of kinesiology, biomechanics, neuro-mechanics and physics. Dietz has also given numerous lectures around the country, as well as publish several scientific articles and dozens articles on training. Most recently, Dietz co-authored the top selling book, Triphasic Training: A systematic approach to elite speed and explosive strength performance. Today’s guest is Justin Moore, performance education coordinater at Parabolic Performance & Rehabilitation.  We’ve had some prodigious young coaches on this show, such as Matt Van Dyke, Cameron Josse, and Max Schmarzo, and Justin is no exception to that rule. I first came across Justin’s work on Darkside Strength, and it has been one of my top resources this past year in terms of applying Postural Restoration (PRI) Institute principles into my strength and conditioning practice.  For those not familiar with PRI, it is a way of looking at the body from a standpoint of respiration, and its impact on joint position. I’ve found over the years that athletes who tend to thrive more, as they gain weight room strength, in terms of their performance in track, or swimming, are those who have alignments that are closer to optimal.  Athletes who have poor position of the thorax will generally hit glass ceilings of their sport performance, or even go backwards when heavily loaded over time. In my mind, those coaches that are integrating PRI into strength and conditioning based practice are pushing the industry forward in a big way, and can help all of us give our athletes the positioning, and subsequent training they need to reach their highest level, and prevent injury in the process.  Today on the podcast, Justin shares his knowledge on PRI principles, cueing strategies, squat and deadlift sequencing, the role of the hamstrings in lifting, and much more. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Justin’s background as an athlete and coach, as well as his mentors in the field How PRI principles have had an impact on Justin’s coaching, alignment and posture of the axial skeleton, length-tensioning of muscle, tri-planar movement, respiration and variability Utilization of PRI and movement based system and internal vs. external cueing Deadlift sequencing based on PRI principles Squat sequencing based on PRI principles The role of the hamstrings in an athletic squat Bands and their use in creating external rotation in squatting Quotes “PRI has given me a lens by which to view all movement with a more discerning eye” “The cranium, the ribcage, the pelvis and the spine; they set the foundation by which I can express strength through the appendicular skeleton” “A lot of times, we get caught up looking at the motion of limbs without appreciation for the foundation for them” “A muscle is going to contract and produce force optimally at its resting length” “Everything we do comes back to gait” “Variability is having options, more of it is not necessarily better, if we are talking about a powerlifter of a 100m sprinter, those people should not have a ton of variability” “If you are unable to manage the sagittal plane, your variability is going to be limited” “A deadlift should be a lower body exercise, it should be a trunk stability exercise with range of motion through the limbs and through the lower body, and strength and power being developed in the pushing muscles of our lower body” “Think of knees going forward as limbs reaching” “If my squat ends up looking exactly like the torso position of my deadlift, then I really don’t consider that a squat” “(in a squat) There is no initiation of hips first, or knees first, they both go at the same time” “If I keep active abs and I keep active, eccentriccaly lengthening hamstrings, in a squat, then I have a chance to get my pelvic floor under my rib cage, and I have a chance to drive it up with my hamstrings, glutes and quads, rather than just my back and quads” “External rotation is going to be coupled with extension and abduction” “We need internal rotation of the hip to squat’ “Internal rotation and valgus are not the same” About Justin Moore

Today’s guests are Matt Van Dyke and Max Schmarzo, and we’ll be chatting in depth on the concepts of building athletic power, specifically on controversial topics, such as: The utilization of isometrics in power development Ranges of motion in basic lifts Period of the training year devoted to power and complex training Maximal intent and velocity based training And more Matt Van Dyke has appeared before on the podcast with an amazing segment on his glute layering protocols and multi-planar training ideals.   He also has written a great article on autoregulated in-season training and is one of the brightest young coaches in the field.  Max Schmarzo is the owner of Strong By Science, where he is an active contributor to the field through systems like the force-velocity profile builder, as well as his regular science backed contributions to the often-muddy world of social media. Matt and Max have a new book on training athletic power called “Applied Principles of Optimal Power Development” which is a practical, research backed manual on developing power in athletes.  The book was a great read, and the ideas and research within spurred several thought processes on my own end, and methods to utilize this upcoming year with my own teams. I wanted to get these two on the show to take a deep dive into some of the common ideas and concepts with power that are often debated or misunderstood in our field, as well as create a gateway for the explanation of some practical methods and ideals for the use of power building methods, particularly in a large group setting. Key Points: A general philosophy of strength, power and potentiation Ideas on which proportion of the season to train power and potentiation Advantages of using fuller range of motion vs. more short and specific ranges of motion in light of power Isometrics in terms of potentiation, structural and neural functions Ideals of maximal intent through each lifting repetition Quotes “Strength is going to lay the foundation for power work” “Through a full repetition, you’re only at your maximal intensity at that one point within that lift” “The ability to develop a strength base might best be served using non-specific motor patterns” “If you are pushing your athletes to the point where it’s like you are doing those extended repetitions, there is no way you are producing maximal intent for those first four (out of 8 reps), or those last four” “You are always trying to move whatever load is it as fast as possible” “I like the pulls (for maximal isometrics), they aren’t axially loaded.  If you are going to do a squat into a pin, from a coaching standpoint, it makes you nervous” “If my athlete can’t produce that neural output… below 90% of what they are capable of, I might change the workout for the day” “Velocity based training doesn’t mean moving something fast, it is velocity based analysis” “Structural training is very low on neural demand where functional training is high on neural demand.  During that functional training that’s where maximal intent plays a large role, because you are not just developing muscle but how you use that muscle in a specific movement” Show Notes Supertraining page 394 has a great listing of the structural and functional aspects of training, as Max mentioned to me after the episode it was a better representation than page 9. This week’s guest is Matt Van Dyke.  Matt is the associate director of sports performance at the University of Denver and the author of “Triphasic Lacrosse Training Manual”, along with Cal Dietz. Matt is the youngest coach I’ve had on the podcast so far at age 27, but in his short time in the field, he is already making a big impact, having written 2 books (Triphasic manual for high school and Triphasic Lacrosse), and having been mentored under some of the great strength coaches of our time. About a month ago, Matt showed me his ideas on training proper glute function in athletes that has slashed soft-tissue injury rates, and I was completely blown away.  I’ve been familiar with the use of neuromuscular resetting for the glutes (Be Activated/RPR/MAT/NKT), as well as the idea of various exercises to aid in motor patterning, but I was really impressed by how Matt had formed a hierarchy to this model, starting with structural issues and working down the line (you can read about the full sequence with all related exercises in the Triphasic Lacrosse manual). Seeing it all in place, it made a lot of sense to me based on everything I’ve seen in my past experience, and knew that this work was going to change how coaches thought about glute training and function for a long time. At the University of Denver, Matt works heavily with lacrosse, alpine ski, volleyball, tennis and swimming.  His prior experience included 6 months at the University of Minnesota working under Cal Dietz, as well as working at St. Cloud State, and interning at Iowa State. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Matt’s background in strength and conditioning Pro’s and con’s of using Olympic lifts in a program, and aspects of rate of force development in the Olympic lifts vs. other movements How to address athletic compensation patterns via the glute laying model The link between the lymphatic system and stress response How to integrate breathing into the course of a lifting session, and particularly French Contrast training Glute layering and proper hip extension patterning Great “Bang for the Buck” glute activation exercises for improving glute patterning Tri-planar movement and its role in preventing injury and preparing athletes for sport Quotes: “A reason we’ve shied away form O-lifts is the reduced range availability for actual force training in the movement.  In an Olympic movement, there is no doubt there is a ton of power created, but this is when an athlete is technically proficient in it” “An Olympic lift isn’t an absolute strength or absolute speed exercise” “Olympic lifts don’t fit in the triphasic training model” “A power clean never reached the same height of impulse (rate of force development) compared to a squat jump” “The total force produced was higher in the power clean” “What can we take to the field?...we want that singular impulse” “Compensation patterns are either due to a structural issue or a stress issue” “Belly breathing is one thing we teach our athletes immediately upon them getting on campus” “After the 4 movements of French Contrast, we’ll implement some smaller movements or prehab work to allow recovery, and then belly breathing as well” “The glute layering model is a system that created from many other systems (Chiropractic, RPR, isometrics, 3D-Contralateral); we went last year with 0 missed practices due to soft tissue injury” “One of our favorite glute activation movements is the fire hydrant; in research it doubled or tripled the motor cortex firing of the glute… it forces the glute to fire in all three planes” “In a cross-under lunge you’ve created a glute isometric in a lengthened position” “1 minute (isometric) might not be enough to create a substantial change in the connection between the brain and that...

Colin Firth gets suited and booted to save the world in Kingsman, and as a preventative measure we bring in oxygen supplies for Shona. Returning from a stint in the theatre, Mark explains how homoeroticism makes horror musicals less traumatic for young school children. Point And Shoot is a documentary where Matt Van Dyke gives us a glimpse into his crash course in manhood as he takes his motorbike into some of the most dangerous places in the world before, Zelig-like, he ends up taking part in the Libyan Revolution. It's all schlaps on TV in The Slap, starring local hero Zachary Quinto and a front runner for the most-obnoxious-little-kid award of 2015.

Lincoln has been undergoing a renaissance. Not only our 16th president with an award-winning theatrical film, but also the car brand that was named for him. Over the past decade or so, Ford's Lincoln had lost its way. It fell from a top selling luxury brand to a name that almost faded away replaced by the thriving European luxury lines. But with a new chief designer, some great looking product and an automotive veteran to guide the car company, has Lincoln finally turned the corner? John McElroy hosts Matt VanDyke, Lincoln's new global head of marketing, sales and service to see where he intends to take the company. Joining John on his panel is Keith Naughton from Bloomberg News and William Vlasic of the New York Times.
