A legend sits down and tells the truth. Don Mattingly takes us from a Nashville locker room soundtrack to the white-hot core of Yankees–Red Sox, from Steinbrenner's pressure-cooker to a tiny adjustment that unlocked one of the wildest streaks in modern hitting. We get the human details you don't see in a box score: the phone call that changed a relationship with ownership, the way a clubhouse becomes a small town, and the rush of watching your kid fall in love with the game from the warning track. We dig into hitting with precision and humility. Don explains why his doubles came from using the whole field, how a simple cue from Bobby Murcer turned 1987 on its head, and what it really felt like to stand in against Randy Johnson's sidearm thunder. He reframes the analytics era as a language shift—ride, run, horizontal movement—while still championing contact, tempo, and action. The pitch clock gets a thumbs up. The challenge-based automated strike zone, he argues, is quicker and more strategic than people realize. And the extra-innings runner? It ends games, but it bends bullpens.Away from the lines, Mattingly Charities is building home libraries for underserved kids, aiming at the third-grade reading cliff with the urgency of a pennant race. We talk about hosting community events in airplane hangars, flying in artists for one-night sets, and creating nights where generosity feels like celebration. There's space, too, for laughter—Seinfeld memories, golf handicaps gone dormant, and the odd night where Larry David practically pitches a Curb episode over dinner. If you love baseball's past and care about its future, you'll feel at home here. Hit follow, share this with a friend who misses contact hitting, and leave a quick review to help more people find the show. (NOTE regarding this episode: Ben and I both live in semi-remote areas with not the best internet connectivity, and this shows here-and-there in this episode with some audio-oddities. I am very sorry about that, but nevertheless, listeners can contextually understand Ben's points when the hiccup periodically occurs.) Dr. Ben Mattingly along with his wife, Jennifer Mattingly, PA-C, founded and own Wild Med Adventures. He is also the Founder and former Director of the Wilderness Medicine Fellowship Program at Baystate Medical Center, and former Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School's Department of Emergency Medicine. Ben has a passion for the wilderness and has traveled throughout the world, including a year working in a small ER in New Zealand. With his father he's summited Mt. Ranier, Denali, and Vinson Massif in Antarctica. In 2023, he summited Everest, and completed his goal of tackling the Seven Summits. He has taught wilderness medicine while climbing the highest mountain in Mexico, and in Guatemala, he summited the highest peak in Central America. In addition to mountaineering, Ben rock climbs, scuba dives, backpacks, and is a triathlete, skier, and off-road and extreme sports enthusiast. He served as the Team Doctor for an American Hockey League team, and has been active in wilderness medicine and medical education throughout his career. Ben was twice awarded the Outstanding Teacher of the Year by his emergency medicine residents, and he has taught wilderness medicine in over 10 countries. Boy, talk about living your life in full, Ben is the poster boy for doing so, and in service of others. BT & Sal dive deep into the Mets' offseason, arguing that the team has to address core positional deficiencies—like forcing Pete Alonso to DH—before throwing money at starting pitching. Sal makes a radical case for trading Francisco Lindor before his contract turns into an albatross. The conversation takes a sharp turn into media drama as Sal learns BT dropped the ball on a personal invitation from A-Rod to his HBO documentary premiere, leading to a fiery confrontation. Finally, the duo delivers their Week 10 NFL Power Rankings, resulting in major disagreement: Sal rewards the Bills for beating the Chiefs, putting Buffalo at #1 (dropping Kansas City to #2). BT remains consistent with the Broncos at #1 (despite being nervous about their Thursday game) and claims the Rams are the best team in the NFC.

BT and Sal unleash a fiery, no-holds-barred assault on the New York Giants, definitively declaring the tenures of GM Joe Schoen and Head Coach Brian Daboll "absolutely over" following a dreadful 3-8 record in their last 21 games. The hosts slam the team for being "weak, disengaged, and poorly built," demanding an immediate organizational "clean house" to break the "Giants' Cycle of Suck." While they acknowledge rookie QB Jaxson Dart as the "only silver lining" that makes the job appealing to a new coach, BT cautions against giving him "savior" status too soon, fearing the New York media could "ruin" him like Sam Darnold. The discussion shifts to the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot, as the guys fiercely debate the "Case for Mattingly's Immortality" alongside the fate of legends like Bonds and Clemens. Finally, they dive into the emotional fallout of the World Series and the tough business decision facing the Mets with closer Edwin Diaz.
BT & Sal ignite the mic, dissecting the Contemporary Baseball Era Hall of Fame Ballot, making their fiery picks and discussing the fate of controversial legends like Bonds and Clemens, alongside fan favorites Don Mattingly, Dale Murphy, and Jeff Kent. The debate shifts to the Giants' season of total doom, with the hosts declaring it's "over" for Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen. They argue the organization must undergo a "clean house" reboot, keep Jaxson Dart a "freeze all assets" trade deadline mandate, and hire an experienced head coach, contrasting the mess with Sean Payton's quick Denver turnaround. Finally, they dive into the urgent need to "save Dart" from his own reckless, though admired, style of play and analyze Aaron Glenn's contentious media strategy, concluding that only wins will validate his hard-line approach.
BT & Sal dive into the highly anticipated Contemporary Baseball Era Player Ballot for the Hall of Fame Class of 2026, dropping fiery first-instinct votes on names like Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Gary Sheffield, and Dale Murphy. The central focus is on Don Mattingly, as the hosts debate whether his brilliant-but-brief peak, including an MVP and a near-miss MVP season, should finally secure his plaque, comparing his case to the two-time MVP Dale Murphy. They dissect the arguments for Mattingly and other controversial figures, acknowledging that for some, this ballot could be their final chance at induction.
Fr. Mattingly preaches about the obvious message of Sunday's Gospel—the beauty of humility and the ugliness of pride.
Mike Francesa talks to Don Mattingly about his long journey to the World Series, now as a bench coach with Toronto.

Yankees meltdown dominates the hour—fans fantasize about a dream team of Mattingly, Girardi, Cone, Randolph, and Jeter, while others just want hitters who can hit. Calls flood in, and Al shoots down Jeter-for-manager chatter. Jays clinch at Yankee Stadium, Jeter defends Boone, who admits it's been a rough year, and Lucy Burdge grills Schlittler: “and then what happened?” Over in the NFL, Daboll, Sirianni, and Glenn weigh in on Eagles struggles, and Belichick sparks buyout rumors at UNC, leaving everyone asking: is he even hirable?
The Yankees' season wrapped in chaos, and the reactions were just as wild. Boomer slammed the starting pitching—except Cam Schlittler—while the offense vanished when it mattered most. A-Rod called the roster one of the worst ever, Jazz Chisholm bragged about winning the World Series then blew a key double play, and Judge shined but Vlad stole the spotlight. Fans flooded the lines, debating everything from Cashman's job to who should manage—some dreaming of Jeter, Mattingly, Girardi, Cone, and Randolph, others just pleading for hitters who can hit. Postgame drama included the Blue Jays' manager taunting “start spreading the news bitches,” Schlittler breaking down the clubhouse mood, and Volpe reflecting on a rough postseason. Across the hour, every Yankee misstep was dissected, from petty celebrations to coaching critiques, leaving fans angry, confused, and begging for a team reboot.
Yankees meltdown sparks wild fan ideas—some want a sarcastic dream team of Mattingly, Girardi, Cone, Randolph, and Jeter, while others just plead for a lineup that can swing the bat.

When Xi Jinping took over the Chinese Communist Party in 2012, he began a new chapter in China's history—one that would come to be defined above all by his grip on power. Xi overhauled not only the CCP but also China's economy, military, and role in the world. Yet no matter how secure his power may be—and no matter his recent hot-mic musings about living to 150—what comes after Xi, and how it comes, is an increasingly central question in Chinese politics. As the political scientists Tyler Jost and Daniel Mattingly wrote recently in Foreign Affairs, “For any authoritarian regime, political succession is a moment of peril . . . and for all its strengths, the CCP is no exception.” And that's not just a risk for the future. The uncertainty and the jockeying that the succession question spurs is already starting to shape China's present. To Jost and Mattingly, there's more at stake than just the matter of who will follow Xi. They note: “The drama created by a struggle over the succession . . . is unlikely to stay inside China's borders.” They joined Deputy Editor Chloe Fox to discuss the nature of Xi's rule, his attempt to define his legacy, and what that will mean for China in the coming months, years, and decades. Retired police Sgt. John Mattingly sits down to share the unfiltered truth about his decades in law enforcement. From working narcotics and violent crimes to running postage interdiction, Mattingly has seen it all — and some of those cases still haunt him to this day. In this powerful interview, he opens up about his early years as a police officer, the dangers of working narcotics cases, and the emotional weight of investigating violent crimes. He also talks about the unique world of postage interdiction and the major arrests it led to. But the case that changed everything was the Breonna Taylor raid, where Mattingly was shot and nearly killed. He discusses how that night ended his career, how the media shaped the public narrative, and what he says really happened during the raid. This is a raw, honest conversation about the realities of police work, the trauma that comes with it, the impact of media coverage, and what life is like after walking away from the badge. #JohnMattingly #BreonnaTaylorCase #LawEnforcementStories #PoliceInterview #TrueCrimePodcast #MediaTruth #NarcoticsUnit #LockedInPodcast Thank you to BLUECHEW for sponsoring this episode: Visit https://bluechew.com/ and use promo code LOCKEDIN at checkout to get your first month of BlueChew FREE & pay five bucks for shipping.
