It was uncovered this week that State Senator Mike Bohacek is facing charges related to an OWI in January. What has many up in arms, is the alleged offense is just now becoming public thanks to a law that shields lawmakers from legal accountability shortly before, during, and after the legislative session. On this week's Statehouse Happenings, Rob Kendall, Jim Merritt, and Abdul-Hakim Shabazz examine how Bohacek was able to evade public scrutiny, as well as who knew what and when. Here comes the rain & cooler temps. Looks like there's a good chance we'll get a severe thunderstorm during the overnight tonight and it's gonna be much more seasonable this weekend. In the news this morning, we talked about the upcoming weather, Judge Dugan filed to dismiss the charges against her, a Milwaukee high school has an excessive rat problem, an update on a semi vs. train collision, and a recall on eye drops. In sports, the Brewers managed to get a win against the Guardians last night, we recapped last night's NBA & NHL playoff action and looked ahead to tonight's matchups in the NBA & NHL. Plus, we discussed the Packers 2025 schedule. We talked about what's on TV tonight and had a great story about a cop that saved a dog's life and was able to adopt it after the owner never showed up to claim the pooch. It's "Hypothetical Thursday", and Brian's question for Jean was: "If you could get rid of one of the chores you do on a regular basis for the rest of your life, what chore would it be?" Meanwhile, Jean's question for Brian was: "What was the best year of your life?" Office Cora joined us to talk about what she's doing in the 715 this weekend and she also asked us a hypothetical question. It was: "If you could live in any country for one year, which one would you choose?" And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy who got his 20th OWI, a couple that ordered a Trump watch but got a Rump watch instead, a DoorDash delivery driver who scammed millions from the company, an absolutely WILD video of a woman towing her boyfriend's car down a highway, and a mom who was purchasing ammo & tactical gear for her son so he could commit a mass shooting event.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Back into the mid 50's today! Might see the 50's again on Sunday, too. We started the morning with the Thursday song, and in the news, an American Airlines plane collided with a Black Hawk helicopter just outside of DC, a 72 year-old bus driver in Wisconsin was arrested for OWI, America's "Worst Mayor" got into a brawl at a recent community meeting, and a large drug bust in Wisconsin. In sports, the Badgers blew it last night against unranked Maryland, the Bucks play again tomorrow night in San Antonio, and should the Lombardi trophy be renamed after Tom Brady? Elsewhere in sports, NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently suggested changing to 10-minute quarters to speed up games, and Caitlin Clark has turned down an invite to participate in the NBA All-Star Weekend. We let you know what's on TV today/tonight, and a really deserving kid in Philly recently got surprised with free tickets to the NFC Championship game! Today was our first ever "Hypothetical Thursday", where we would ask each other a separate hypothetical question and see what our answers are, along with our listeners. Office Cora joined us just after 8am to talk about what's she's doing this weekend in the 715, and the Milwaukee Admirals are planning on busting out some retro jerseys later this season to honor the late, great Bob Uecker. In today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a woman in New Zealand who found a knife in her sandwich wrap, a school in California that had to cancel classes after they had a bunch of copper wire stolen from inside it's walls, a guy who broke into a house & stole a brand new toilet, a stolen subway train in NYC, a homicide suspect in Springfield, Missouri who looks a lot like "Sideshow Bob" from "The Simpsons", and a guy who assaulted his roomie with a bologna sammich. Wisconsin is prepping for a visit from No. 1 Oregon on Saturday night but the focus to start the week was on offensive coordinator Phil Longo. He spoke with reporters about Braedyn Locke's struggles, the chances of Mabrey Mettaeur being ready to play and recruiting multiple QBs in one class. The guys also discuss Jack Del Rio's stepping down after his arrest for OWI.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this week's Keepin It Real, Cam tells us about some early morning attacks that are happening in his part of town. You'd be surprised at who is doing the attacking. ----- On the top of the Tangles Hair Salon on Bit and Spur Road in Mobile sits a hat and a headlamp with its light on. The headlamp is the type that an early morning jogger wears before the sun comes up. How it got up there is a heck of a story. Dennison Crocker jogs before daylight nearly every morning. His headlamp lights the way. One dark morning near Bit and Spur Road, a giant thunk, thud, and whoosh caught Dennison off guard, and his hat and the light were gone. Something had hit him in the back of the head. His light was flying away and stopped on the roof of Tangles. The culprit: an owl. Likely a barred owl. They're the ones known to attack. But that was just the beginning. Weeks later he was jogging not far from the same spot when the owl hit him again. He was in the middle of the road and, bang. Dennison started swatting wildly in the air. Just then a car stopped and asked if he were ok – Dennison was, after all, wildly swinging his arms around in the air in the middle of the road before daylight early one weekday morning. He told the driver about the owl. The driver looked concerned for Dennison's mental well-being and slowly drove away and, just then, the owl hit him again. The driver reversed back, seeing Dennison wildly swinging his arms again and offered to get him outta there. Dennison dove in and went straight home. The owl has become quite a star around here. My new best friend, ChatGPT, says the owl is either protecting its nest or it thinks Dennison is poaching on its hunting ground. It's probably the latter since it's a bit early yet for owls to be nesting. So Dennison, per the owl, looks like a food supply threat. And, well, maybe he kinda does. Dennison's a big solid guy and I'm guessing he'd need a lot of squirrels to fill up, leaving fewer for his owl friend. The owl is rightly concerned Dennison taking more than his share. I learned about all this at my regular Thursday beer drinking session with my homies and it was Jay Stubbs who told Dennison's story only because Jay told us HE has been attacked, too. Jay is an early morning walker and not far from Tangles where Dennison's hat sits, Jay got hit by what he says felt like a broom over the back of his head. His hat flew off and all he saw was wings. Jay, too, looks like a food supply threat. Jay could pack in some squirrels. Oddly, I'm on team owl. I don't want anyone to get hurt, I don't wany eyes gouged out, but I like it that in our terribly predictable world, we have to worry about an owl attacking. It makes me chuckle. Getting attacked by an owI is something you could never have predicted sitting on your couch New Year's Day, making guesses about your upcoming year. It's a wonderfully refreshing story of life's randomness and unpredictability. What's the moral? It's simply this – it's against the normal order of nature for people to exercise before daylight. Even the owls know this. I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to Keep It Real.
Comedian and show creator Derek Waters (Drunk History) stops by as Jason describes how a bus driver on a field trip got arrested for OWI, Randy explains how a couple got arrested over an X-rated margarita stunt goes viral, and Daniel warns against attempting a string of robberies in the same stretch of town, and so much more!
Paris Olympics are done, Denard Robinson's cop cam, Justin Bieber heckled, Eli Zaret stops in, Corey Feldman visits a medium, Drew Crime, bands with no original members, and Frankie Valli is morphing into an animatronic puppet. Paris 2024: Breakdancing captivated the Olympics for its pure stupidity. The butts were on full display in the Artistic Swimming event. Olympics are done… back to twerking on OnlyFans. Johnny Weir looked perfectly ridiculous. Tom Cruise made the closing ceremonies all about him. The USA dominates Basketball. Eli Zaret drops by to praise LeBron James, name-drop Mike Tirico, the NBA's massive new sports streaming deal, comment on Donald Trump's crowd obsession, cover the latest Jim Harbaugh nonsense, Michigan's middle finger back to the NCAA, the Wolverines low standing in the first AP college football rankings, MSU's rough schedule, boring Detroit Lions preseason games, quarterback contracts to come, the terrible Detroit Tigers and more. We watch the cop cam footage of former University of Michigan QB Denard Robinson's OWI. Jake Paul looks like he's on steroids. A new movie about Saturday Night Live is on the way and will be released October 11th. Nelly is 50 years old and still taking ecstasy. We only know this because he hit a slot machine jackpot. Frankie Valli is 90 and still singing… depending on how you define singing. There are many bands performing today with no original members. Molly Hatchet sucks live. Iron Butterfly is not much better. Kevin Bacon really wants you to look at his hair. Is Kevin Bacon hot? He certainly thinks he's a smoke show. Corey Feldman saw medium Tyler Henry and his mind was blown. Fred Durst confirmed the Corey solos are legit, but they are still atrocious. Amanda Bynes looks terrible these days. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are making a movie about Hulk Hogan suing Gawker. Murderer Gypsy Rose Blanchard is going to have a baby and it's a girl! Justin Bieber is an old man being heckled by kids now. Britney Spears played with 1/3 of Paul Soliz's children. She's currently beefing with Blake Lively. Elijah Wood was in town and probably thinks he's hot too. Drew Crime: The crimes of Linda Cooney. The Samantha Woll alleged murderer will not be tried again. Murder charges were finally filed against a man that had a relationship with a Detroit neurosurgeon that was found dead in his house rolled up in a carpet. David Copperfield sued for trashing penthouse. There a few things funnier that a leaky pool in a city high-rise. Politics: Kamala Harris is on the rise! Joe Biden did an interview and nobody noticed. Debates are on the way. Even Time Magazine couldn't land an interview with Kamala. Looking Back on the Juwan Howard Era Starts at 1:00 It's coachin' search time, baby. Time for Warde Manuel to finally make a decision (unless it's Beilein). One last look back at the Juwan Howard era. He came in with a good Beilein roster and brought in Franz Wagner. It felt like a seamless transition but then after that he just didn't have a wing on his roster. Juwan was finding guys who were already shaped for the NBA and not having them prove anything. He also couldn't play the portal well, it feels like he was too used to managing NBA rosters. It's not a zero tolerance policy if you keep having incidents happen. 2. The Basketball Coaching Search Starts at 27:30 Greg McDermott (Creighton), Randy Bennett (Saint Mary's), Nate Oats (Alabama), and Tony Bennett (NTTB, Virginia) are off the table. John Beilein has been brought up but it feels like a pipe dream. He's older and not familiar with the NIL era. Shaka Smart probably won't be interested because football is king at Michigan. Is Michigan a better gig than Marquette? Richard Pitino Jr - needs a better resume than what he did at Minnesota. Brian's guy is Niko Medved out of Colorado State who has improved the Rams tremendously. He can find weird guys from weird places under the radar and he coaches them up. Also, everyone seems to like him. Darian DeVries (Drake) is a candidate who coached under Medved. His teams seem to be really well coached but are short (they can avoid turnovers and can't offensive rebound at all but can maniacally clean up their own glass). Dusty May at Florida Atlantic reached the Final Four last year and had a Kenpom top 20 team. This is his 6th year as a college coach but only the second where his team has been good. Amir Abdur-Rahim at South Florida built Kennesaw State from a one win team to a tournament team. Mark Pope of BYU has had top 20 Kenpom teams in three of the five years he's been at BYU. 3. Hockey at Minnesota - BTT Semifinals Starts at 1:02:25 Michigan beats Minnesota for the third straight year in the Big Ten Tournament at Mariucci. This will lock up an NCAA Tournament bid and now they play Michigan State in East Lansing for their third straight Big Ten Tournament title. This was probably Michigan's most complete game of the season. The second period was extremely dominant but felt like they should've scored more. Michigan is 1-3 against MSU so far this year after winning their first game 7-1. They'll likely be a 3 seed. Do you or do you not want to draw Denver? 4. Latest Football Bits Starts at 1:27:33 Hey, did you hear Michigan sniped Tony Alford from Ohio State? What if he hates Ryan Day more than Michigan?? Who knows. This is a good sign that people want to work for Sherrone Moore. Wink Martindale is learning a lot about the defense from Rod Moore, so maybe the Mike Sainristil effect won't be as big as we thought. Newly hired defensive line coach Greg Scruggs got an OWI, which was not his first. He's been suspended indefinitely. Spring football starts today! MUSIC: "Fancy" — Drake “If You Don't Want My Love" — Jalen Ngonda “Gettin' to the Point”— Panda Bear and Sonic Boom “Across 110th Street”
TheWolverine.com's Anthony Broome and Clayton Sayfie discuss Juwan Howard's firing and the top candidates to replace him with Michigan basketball, in addition to roster movement in the transfer portal. Also discussed is the start of Michigan's spring football camp and the OWI arrest of Greg Scruggs, recently hired DL coach. Today is #NationalFridayFishFryDay, even though we do that EVERY Friday in WI. We obviously talked about the sensational Caitlin Clark, who just set the NCAA Division 1 women's basketball scoring record. The big topic this morning was whether or not you'd return $30,000 if you found it on a train. Brian, of course, would keep the money...but both Shaw & Jean say they'd turn it into the authorities. Doc joined us to talk about this weekend's Daytona 500. And during today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy in Illinois who showed up to his OWI class drunk, a #FloridaMan who stole some statues to try & impress his ex-gf, some fake alligators in Arizona that are causing people to call 911, a mom who assaulted her own kid after he called her a "Booger Face", another #FloridaMan who carjacked his own grandmother & then wrote her a 4-page apology letter, and a guy who got a few batteries stuck in his pee-hole. Hey there, automotive enthusiasts!
On October 20, 1944, General Douglas MacArthur kept his famous I Shall Return promise when he landed at Leyte with one of the largest invasion forces in history. From the beach, he broadcast his "I Have Returned" speech. It is a short, 2-minute speech, but it is packed with emotion. MacArthur had written the speech about a month before the landings, and it had gone through several drafts. On September 29, 1944, MacArthur recorded the speech in an OWI office in Brisbane in the event of technical difficulties during the landings. This podcast episode features this recorded version. After he gave the speech live on the beach on October 20, 1944, the content of the speech made its way around the world. It was panned by newspapers in the US and by later writers. They considered it “sacrilegious,” “flamboyant,” and as proof of “MacArthur's supreme egotism.” As MacArthur's air chief General George Kenney explained however, the speech was not meant for Americans or for the world. It was for the Filipino people. That audience received it well. For many, it was a new commitment from a trusted source. - a commitment to see the liberation of the Philippines through to completion.Just something to think about as you listen to this recording of MacArthur's I Shall Return Speech. This week's EYE ON NPI will make your sensors soft and luxurious thanks to the Renesas ZSSC3241 Sensor Signal Conditioning IC (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/renesas/zssc3241-sensor-signal-conditioning-ic) - which, like a fancy bottle of hair conditioner, will de-tangle any frustrations you have with using resistive sensors that require amplification and filtering. Many "sensors" that engineers use to measure temperature, pressure, force, light, etc, are actually implemented as resistive sensors. For example, take your common CdS cell (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/photo-detectors-cds-cells/540) also known as an LDR - Light Dependant Resistor. The CdS material has an interesting property that as light shines on it, the resistance decreases. Another common sensor is the PT100 or PT1000 temperature sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/temperature-sensors/rtd-resistance-temperature-detector/535) those are known as RTD - Resistance Temperature Detector - and have a tiny sliver of platinum that has a near-linear increase in resistance as temperature increases (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/honeywell-sensing-and-productivity-solutions/HEL-705-U-0-24-00/3073062). A third example is the classic strain gauge, made of a thin plate of patterned metallic material that very slightly changes resistance as it is deformed (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strain_gauge). That kind of rough estimation works great for beginners or simple light sensing, but will not cut it when you have to use a strain gauge at the supermarket to measure pounds of veggies: you want it to be very precise, at least within 1% or better! And if you're using a temperature measurement for a scientific process, you may need to get within 1 degree C or better. You can usually improve the quality slightly by having a 1% or 0.1% precision resistor, adding an op-amp gain stage, upgrading your ADC from 8 or 10 bit to 16 or 24 bits - however you will still need to adjust calibration from sensor-to-sensor as well as account for temperature and/or humidity. That's where the Renesas ZSSC3241 Sensor Signal Conditioning IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/q1w59d7c) comes in! It's designed specifically to make any resistive sensor easy to wire up and interface with SPI, I2C or 1-Wire. You can use Wheatstone half-bridge, full-bridge or divider configuration so it's good for strain gauges or RTDs. There's even analog output! The ZSSC3241 provides measurement value readouts and programming capabilities via an I2C, SPI, or one-wire interface (OWI). Three different operation modes allow optimal development of digital, digital-analog, and analog-output smart sensor modules including wake-up on request, continuous-on/fast-response, and automatic/cyclic sensor measurement operations. Absolute and ratiometric voltage, current-loop, or interrupt analog outputs are supported by the ZSSC3241. The analog output options and digital interface options (for calibration and/or a digital application interface) can be combined. Some great stuff that is included in this chip includes dual PGA stages with up to 300x and 1.8x gain, mV offset shift correction, 12 to 24 bit adjustable ADC resolution - lower resolutions will be faster, adjustable sensor bias current, adjustable temperature compensation, oversampling and averaging, error fault reporting, NVM storage for calibration details, interrupt output on value change, and configurable cyclic measurements with sleep mode (https://www.renesas.com/us/en/document/dst/zssc3241-datasheet?r=25417946) - as well as many other configurations that you can check out in the datasheet. While there are many ADCs that one can use to read resistive bridge, we've never seen one with so many knobs for getting the exact right data out without needing a lot of extra massaging....and the pricing is great considering how much more you get than a normal off-the-shelf ADC chip. If you want to get started fast we recommend getting the ZSSC3241 Eval Board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/renesas/ZSSC3241KIT/19234863), particularly since it some with desktop GUI software that can be used to test out the zillions of configuration settings directly with your sensor of choice wired up, without having to go through a ton of re-compilation cycles. Both the Renesas ZSSC3241 Sensor Signal Conditioning IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/q1w59d7c) and Eval Board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/renesas/ZSSC3241KIT/19234863) are in stock now for immediate shipment from DigiKey. Order today and you'll get those chip in hand by tomorrow afternoon, so that when you are faced with your next resistive sensor project, you'll skip the struggle and go straight to soft, silky, sensor success.

It was October 29, 1983 in Marshalltown, Iowa when 20 year old Kevin Thacker was arrested for OWI by Officer Kendall Eldred. Less than an hour later, Kevin would be fighting for his life due to a head injury. Six days later he would succumb to this injury. His parents took Officer Eldred to court with a civil lawsuit claiming that he had caused the death of their son. The police department would contend that Kevin had escaped custody and jumped from their roof to the roof across the alleyway when he fell to his death, making it a total accident.Sources for this episode:Justia - Thacker v. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for Friday, July 21.According to the National Weather Service it will be mostly sunny on Friday in the Cedar Rapids area, with a high near 82 degrees. On Friday evening it will be partly cloudy, with a low of around 59 degrees. After a rocky start to 2023, Hamburg Inn No. 2 in Iowa City has again closed temporarily.A sign noting the closure is now taped to the front of the restaurant's door at 214 N. Linn St., and Google results now list the restaurant as “temporarily closed.”Citing staffing issues, the undated sign says the diner will be closed “until further notice,” with “hope to reopen again real soon.”It is unclear when the restaurant closed again. A representative for Hamburg Inn could not be reached.Hamburg Inn reopened Feb. 22 with limited hours, after several weeks of closure starting in early January.Monica Vernon announced Thursday she is stepping down as executive director of The District: Czech Village and New Bohemia to spend more time with her family. The District board is launching a search for a new leader after the departure of Vernon, who has led the organization since 2019. Her resignation takes effect Sept. 21.The timeline to hire her replacement isn't set, but Vernon said the district hopes to have someone hired in late September or early October.Vernon, a former Cedar Rapids City Council member, said she has no plans to seek elected office again, but her experience on the council helped her strengthen The District's partnership with the city of Cedar Rapids and other major area partners.A Cedar Rapids man pleaded guilty Thursday to vehicular homicide in a 2022 fatal crash, which killed a 77-year-old Cedar Rapids woman and seriously injured a Marion woman.Zawadi Christophe, 19, also pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle-operating while intoxicated, serious injury by vehicle-OWI and serious injury-reckless driving. In the fatal crash plea, Christophe admitted to being under the influence of alcohol or drugs and driving recklessly when he unintentionally caused the death of Judy Hoover, of Cedar Rapids, and seriously injured Joanne Swenka, 73, of Marion,.Driving on First Avenue in Cedar Rapids on Oct. 24, 2022, Christophe rear-ended a vehicle, driven by Swenka and with Hoover as a passenger. The crash caused the vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic, where it was hit by a pickup driving east.Last year, Swenka's family told The Gazette she and Hoover were driving home from bingo that night at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
Event recorded live at IWP, DC, on February 21, 2023. About the Lecture In his State of the Union Address of 1941, President Roosevelt proclaimed “Four Freedoms.” Eighty years ago this month, the publication of four paintings by the Vermont artist Norman Rockwell inspired Americans. The Office of War Information launched a major information campaign directed at both domestic and foreign publics. The Four Freedoms became shorthand for the war goals of the Allies. Both FDR's Four Freedoms and the famous paintings by Norman Rockwell are, however, fading from public memory. Mr. Bishop will review the campaign's antecedents, the State of the Union address of 1941; the impact of Norman Rockwell's four paintings; elaboration of Four Freedom themes in sculpture, music, and film; OWI's messaging directed at domestic and foreign audiences, and the impact of the Four Freedoms in the postwar period. About the Speaker An Air Force Vietnam veteran who also served in Korea and on the Air Force Academy faculty, teaching history, Mr. Bishop joined the U.S. Information Agency as a Foreign Service Officer in 1979. During a 31-year career in USIA and State, he served in Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Capitol Hill, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and twice in China. At the Pentagon, he was the Foreign Policy Advisor to the Commandant of the Marine Corps and then the USAF Chief of Staff before a final year at the American Embassy in Kabul. He is now a Krulak Center Distinguished Fellow at Marine Corps University in Quantico. The terms operating while intoxicated (“OWI”) and driving while intoxicated (“DUI”) are often used interchangeably. To be charged with an OWI, a vehicle does not necessarily need to be in motion, whereas a DUI implies the person needs to be driving the vehicle. Wisconsin uses the broader OWI terminology in its laws. Trigger Warning: This episode discusses cases of child sexual abuse and may not be suitable for all audiences. In the state of Wisconsin, there are harsher penalties for drunk driving than there are to sexually abuse a child. That is why today's podcast guest, legal assistant and survivor of child sexual abuse Heather Martell is attempting to pass a state bill that uses similar language from OWI state statutes to provide more severe penalties for abusers of children. You'll learn what loopholes exist for perpetrators, what the long term effects on victims and this community are, and how her bill would help disrupt cycles of this kind of abuse. If you would like to read and support this bill you can download it here. You can also email Heather at: HeatherOLMartell@outlook.com
