Co-hosts Maurice Bursztynski and Jonathan Melville join Mike to take on a Patreon request from listener John Atom—Nevil Shute's On the Beach. They dive into both the 1959 Stanley Kramer film and the 2000 TV mini-series directed by Russell Mulcahy. Set in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust, the story centers on a U.S. submarine that finds refuge in Melbourne, Australia, where residents face the grim reality that the fallout is heading their way.The episode explores the emotional depth and existential dread of both adaptations, from the restrained melancholy of Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner to the more modern approach with Armand Assante and Rachel Ward. With perspectives shaped by different eras, the hosts unpack how each version captures the quiet devastation of waiting for the end.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.

This week, I am creating The Ultimate Mixtape by asking 65 different people (previous My Weekly Mixtape guests, friends of the show & the amazing Patreon Mixtapers) the same question: If you had to choose one song for the ultimate mixtape (any song / any genre), that would be locked away in a time capsule for others to discover years or decades for now…which song would you choose and why? Now, I'm not lost on the fact that the question is just a spin on the “desert island song” question that a lot of my guests have been asked countless times. The twist for the next few episodes is: I am taking those 65 song choices (all of which are from various bands, artists, decades, genres and tempos), and curating them into what I hope will be a properly sequenced playlist from a musical perspective! At the very least? This was a fun & unique twist on a question as old as interviews themselves. But at its best? Congratulations, you're listening to The Ultimate Mixtape!! This ep. Includes the second collection of 20 responses! Be sure to check out Vol. 1 and stay tuned for Vol. 3 to get the full experience! Guests appearing in Vol. 2 (in no particular order): Matt Scannell of Vertical Horizon, ZZ Ward, Jesse Dayton, Jon Loree of Tantric & Smile Empty Soul, Jamie DiTringo of The Sees, Jim Santora, Author of The Underrated Rock Book, Sherry Thomas of The Aquarian Magazine, Leah Jones of The Struts Life, Alex Gomez of The Sleevie G. Mike White is joined by Maurice Bursztynski and Suzen Tekla Kruglinska to explore Hal Ashby's Being There (1979), a satirical masterpiece based on Jerzy Kosinski's novel. This listener request from Patreon supporter Jordan Nash examines the story of Chance, played brilliantly by Peter Sellers, a sheltered, developmentally delayed man who steps out of isolation after his caretaker's death. Wandering the streets of Washington, D.C., Chance is swept into the elite world of Eve Rand (Shirley MacLaine) and influential power players, including the President (Jack Warden), thanks to a series of misunderstandings. The trio delves into the film's themes of perception, power, and simplicity, discussing its layered satire, unforgettable performances, and enduring relevance.Professor Aaron Hunter, author of Authoring Hal Ashby: The Myth of the New Hollywood Auteur, discusses the film's evolution from Kosinski's novel to the screenplays by Robert C. We step out of the classic alternative era and into the here and now as we recount our Top 5 Albums of 2023. And it just so happens that our guest this week is Jolie Holland, the acclaimed American singer/songwriter who released one of the best records of the year, Haunted Mountain. Actually, it's one of the TWO best records of the year named Haunted Mountain, but we'll get into that... Join us as we hip each other to new sounds, new films and new games (who's up for a round of radio baseball?), and talk gender studies, the stories behind the songs, and New Mexican cuisine. Thanks to Maurice Bursztynski from the Love That Album pod for the introduction with Jolie! Proud members of the Pantheon Podcasts family. Learn more about your ad choices. We could talk until we're blue in the face about what a bridge is and what the greatest bridges are, and we actually did just that. The fabulous Maurice Bursztynski returns for a knock down drag out discussion about songs and song bridges. We also took little breaks in the middle of arguing to listen to some examples of sublime pop song craft in TOP TEN GREAT BRIDGES Part 2. It's unclear if we got to the bottom of it, but no matter, we had a blast hanging with Maurice and revealing picks 5-1.If you missed Top Ten Great Bridges Part 1, get it here:https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/alltimetopten/episodes/2023-08-28T04_00_00-07_00Get your ears on this! What is a bridge? Songwriters will tell you it's that added piece of a pop song that takes it to another level, adds another layer of intrigue to the musical conversation, and then is gone before you know what hit you in the heartstrings. ATTT is super pumped to welcome back one of our favorite returning guests, the musical mastermind Maurice Bursztynski all the way from wintry Australia. We get into the guts of song craft and have a spirited conversation about how the sausage is made, and we play you some of the best bridges of all time. Screwball month continues with a look at Gregory la Cava's My Man Godfrey. Based on the novel and co-written by Eric Hatch, the film stars William Powell as the titular Godfrey. He's a forgotten man, living in a Hooverville in New York City where he's picked up by a bunch of swells out on a scavenger hunt. Bringing in a forgotten man will net a lot of points and help Irene Bullock (Carole Lombard) win the game. In return, she hires Godfrey as a butler to the wacky Bullock family. And, of course, hilarity ensues...Kat Ellinger and Maurice Bursztynski join Mike to discuss the original adaptation as well as the 1957 version with David Niven and June Allyson.

The world of music documentaries is one filled with riches. Other than simply listening to it, there's no better way to absorb the power and importance of music and its ability to change the world. There's a reason why Decline Of Western Civilization, Penelope Spheeris' anthropologic look at the underground hardcore punk scene in late 70s/early 80s LA, was selected by the Library Of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, being deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". That film is much more than images of angry-looking white dudes spitting on each other. It takes the viewer to a specific place and time, and shows how music can move people in strange and fascinating ways. There are dozens of great music documentaries that tell strange and fascinating stories and ATTT is lucky to have Sir Maurice Bursztynski, co-host of the music film podcast See Hear on board to discuss 10 of our favorites. This conversation went on for so long that we had to break it up into two parts, so enjoy part 1 and come on back next week for the conclusion to Top Ten Music Documentaries.Stream this playlist on Apple Music:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/episode-504-top-ten-music-documentaries-part-1/pl.u-38oWZ65FYjdGkKL?ls&fbclid=IwAR1byNtvA2RDjkhI7fMt-en8ekKNEm8Jjdvd952R0FVUJrjdX7j8ha5WluEDid you enjoy last week's Bonus Patreon episode? Welcome back folks, join me and my dear friend and 'podfather' Maurice Bursztynski, for a second time, as we go deep on Wings' nautically charged (if someone scattershot) 1978 release. We pick things up from where we left off on the last episode and we begin chatting about Backwards Traveller. Don't worry folks, it can only get better from there! Apologies for the bisection of parts (I was originally going to do this with Venus and Mars also) but this one is just too damn long, and it means I can get something out for you in the mean time. To find Maurice's two brilliant podcasts (that I can't recommend enough) check out the links below.... Welcome back folks, join me and my dear friend and 'podfather' Maurice Bursztynski as we go deep on Wings' nautically charged (if someone scattershot) 1978 release. In our history of the band we discuss the album's drawn out, globe trotting recording sessions, as well as the departure of two more members of this ever changing lineup. And no, we won't be covering 'Mull of Kintyre', you will have to wait for 'Cold Cuts and Hot Hits, Part 2'! Sorry!Apologies for the bisection of parts (I was originally going to do this with Venus and Mars also) but this one is just too damn long, and it means I can get something out for you in the mean time.To find Maurice's two brilliant podcasts (that I can't recommend enough) check out the links below....See Hear Podcast - www.seehear.podbean.com Love That Album Podcast - www.lovethatalbum.podbean.com Follow us on Twitter for all Macca updates by searching @mccartneypod. Mrs. French's cat is missing. In a rather different take on the typical zombie story, Bruce McDonald's Pontypool (2008) has the English language as the infectious agent which drives people mad. Written by Tony Burgess (and based on his novel, Pontypool Changes Everything), the film stars Stephen McHattie as Grant Mazzy, a shock jock from the big city now working in backwater Ontario with his audio engineer Laurel-Ann (Georgina Reilly) and producer Syndey Briar (Lisa Houle).Mike discusses Pontypool with See Hear's Maurice Bursztynski.Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to episode 1 of the monthly See Hear podcast (hopefully only temporarily utilising the Love That Album podcast RSS feed while I work out issues with iTunes on the separate feed). Join your hosts, Wendi Freeman, Tim Merrill and Maurice Bursztynski as they discuss music related films – narrative or documentary. No gentle start for the team as they discuss the Todd Phillips documentary about notorious punk rock singer GG Allin. The film is not for the faint of heart (and our language may reflect the content discussed), but it is a fascinating look at a man who truly knew no boundaries in they way he lived his life. He is held in equal contempt and admiration by the public and ex-band members. My huge thanks and admiration to Max Bursztynski for composing the show’s theme tune and designing the show logo.
