Since this is our initial excursion into unfamiliar territory (specifically bands covering songs by a specific artist), we figured what better way to kick things off than for us to pay homage to the artists who have paid homage to the Founding Fathers of Metal, the almighty BLACK SABBATH!!! The beauty of cover songs is the myriad of unusual ways in which they can be performed. Some artists stay faithful to the original down to every last nuance and detail, while others go completely off the reservation altogether and create something uniquely their own while still capturing the spirit and essence of the original. None of that really matters to us: if it's anything Sabbath, we're intrigued and interested. Full stop. JOIN US as we get “uncorked and unfiltered” with our cover-to-cover coverage of the first volume of covers by the Godfathers of Metal. It's time to explore BLACK SABBATH COVERS: Vol. 1. Three different artists! Three different covers! Of songs by one beloved band!On the second edition of "Strong Covers," we're digging into covers of three Beatles classics: Earth, Wind & Fire's maximalist remake of "Gotta Get You Into My Life," Ray Charles' saucy reimagining of "Eleanor Rigby," and Bobby McFerrin's delicate recitation of "Blackbird." Come for the English-accented rhyme schemes, stay for the impeccable voice leading.Covered (lol) on this episode:"Gotta Get You Into My Life" by Paul McCartney/Lennon-McCartney, as covered by Earth, Wind & Fire in 1978"Eleanor Rigby" by Paul McCartney/Lennon-McCartney, as covered by Ray Charles in 1968"Blackbird" by Paul McCartney/Lennon-McCartney, as covered by Bobby McFerrin on The Voice, 1984OUTRO SOLOIST: Sam HowardThis episode's outro soloist is bassist Sam Howard. Sam performs and tours with all kinds of artists, from the Wailin' Jennys to Molly Tuttle. After his solo on the bridge, he played all the way through the song's outro, so keep an ear out for his playing mixed under the horns on the way out. It's time for Strong Songs to talk about some Strong Covers! On this episode, Kirk tackles four famous covers, comparing each with the original while trying to suss out what makes a great cover in the first place. It feels like being back in the basement, rehearsing a set for an upcoming gig. For anyone who’s ever been in a band, one of the first things you learn is how to play someone else’s songs. Covers. There is not a Metal band in existence that has NEVER played cover songs by their favorite artists at some point in their careers. The awesome thing about covers is the “interpretation”, much in the same way a chef may “interpret” a particular dish (let’s say fried chicken; wow that actually sounds delicious, doesn’t it? Or maybe a fried chicken burrito? HFS, I think I’m a genius, as that too also sounds delicious! Follow me for more subliminal messages regarding food. Oh yeah…sorry (ahem)) ‘an artist may choose…’ In 3…2…1…), an artist may choose to replicate the song precisely or “reimagine” the song, making it completely something of their own “vision”. BOLTH of which we here at Metal Nerdery enjoy with immensely commensurate gratitude. What we’re saying is we dig covers. Muchly. With the topmost of respect to the lads themselves and Sir George Martin, Beatles songs are whatever you make of them. To be in a world where Beatles songs exist is to be in a world of endless possibilities. Like a lump of clay, you can mold these timeless and evergreen songs to any style, genre, emotion or mood imaginable. It's no wonder that the best of the best have always covered the Beatles and as a true sign of respect, always made the most out of their Beatles covers. Host of the podcasts Love That Album and See Hear Maurice Bursztynski is back for another spirited round of Beatles covers, picking up where we left off in 2013. Today we have an interview with @MrPseu but first we check out the message of Manufacture of Consent by Twelve Foot Ninja. Isn’t this a book title? http://bit.ly/2URzBoC In I Heard This Happened: Noctiluca, a post rock album from Seattle artist Helms Alee. Nicky’s comments: : The album wafts from tight airy Harmonies to bludgeoning heavy guitars as deftly as a group can. It’s not quite lofi but feels purposefully minimalist at times. It’s dark and moody...albeit it won’t let you simmer in any specific mood too long, while never feeling jarring. http://helmsalee.bandcamp.com/album/noctiluca Kyle Meadows new record entitled Full Time Fever is my pock for this week. I wanted a record that would force me to slow down to listen. This record does that with falsetto vocals in a chorus of whispers with meandering loops of acoustic guitar. It’s time again for the ever popular Under The Covers podcast, where it’s all covers, all show long. We've discussed covers of Beatles songs, as well as played "reverse covers" where we hear the originals of Beatles covers, so now it's time for some solo covers! Hear great versions of solo tunes by people like Nina Simone, Bill Frisell, David Bowie, and even a Beatle covering another Beatle's solo song with another Beatle performing on the same track!
If you enjoyed our first episode of "reverse covers," you'll like the second episode. You'll hear original songs by many artists including Chuck Berry, Ella Fitzgerald, Sam Cooke, and even a return of Hoagy Carmichael. Let us know your favorite songs on our Facebook page.
Ever heard some of the original songs the Beatles covered? Have you ever heard of singers like Little Willie Littlefield, Dr. Feelgood, and Larry Williams? If not, check out the latest episode where we play and discuss the original versions of songs that the Beatles later covered. We will also look at solo covers in a future episode.(apologies for the sound quality in the first part of the episode)

Rockers Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have just released their third album together. "Under The Covers Vol.3" is their third album of covers that the duo put together from the songbooks of other artists that they both feel passionate about. Susanna returned to The Time Machine Radio Show last week to share the latest batch of songs. The gifted artist discussed the inspiration behind some of the songs off of the new album. She also discussed with The Time Machine's radio show host, Michael McCartney, the previous two albums from the duo known affectionately as Sid 'n' Susie (Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs), as well as her 2012 album "Someday", which became the most played album on the air for The Time Machine out of all of the records released in 2012. If you're not familiar with the album series that Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have been recording and releasing, what you essentially need to know is that the first album covered sixties material (with the exception of the early seventies classic Bee Gees song "Run To Me"). The second album "Under The Covers Vol. 2" dove into the seventies and this latest album naturally dips into the eighties. Dips may not be the correct choice of wording. This new album plunges into the eighties and both Matthew and Susanna's song choices are so inspired that this collection of songs are a must have for your music collection. Susanna is a core artist of The Time Machine's radio format going back to the eighties with her fellow band mates Vicki Peterson, Debbi Peterson and Michael Steele of The Bangles. The band, along with The Traveling Wilburys, were the most played act on The Time Machine and helped define a sound for the radio broadcast that embraced a sixties musical sensibility with the modern music scene of the time. All four albums from The Bangles in the eighties solidified their status as radio core artists on The Time Machine and their return in 2003 with "Doll Revolution" was welcomed with open arms. The domination of that album's airplay was so strong that it became the most played album of the decade followed by Rachael Yamagata's debut album "Happenstance", "Not Ready To Make Nice" by The Dixie Chicks, Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising", Alice Peacock's self titled sophomore album, "Come Away With Me" by Norah Jones, John Mayer's "Room For Squares", "Mondo Magneto" by Brian Ray, "Lurch" from Mike Viola, "Brainwashed" by George Harrison, Nushu's "Nevermind Lullabye" and Rilo Kiley's "More Adventurous". Susanna found this old flyer to share for a June 13th, 1981 performance of The Colours, before the band became The Bangles, in the basement of the Echo Park Methodist Church Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include The Bangles, Rachael Yamagata and Ronnie Spector.
