One of the joys of the modern era is that, thanks to the internet, people we admire from afar are tantalizingly within reach. I've been on both sides of the equation. My community often reaches out about wanting to connect, and I've done my share of approaching people I admire. In my case of meeting Doug Miller, who is the founder (or co-owner) of supplement brands (e.g. Core Nutritionals, 'Merica Labz, Arms Race Nutrition, Unmatched, and Myoblox) and the specialty supplement retail chain The Nutrition Corners, I got lucky having a mutual friend introduce us at a beverage category conference several years ago. But in this wide-ranging conversation, it felt like I was peeling away layer after layer of the onion...not to reveal something hidden, but to discover more authenticity. Doug and I talk through the inspiration behind starting a supplement brand side hustle two decades ago, and how that decision turned into an expansive business portfolio that includes specialty retail locations, gyms, and more supplement brands. We also discussed what it truly takes to be successful when leading multiple businesses, being a family man, and making an impact in his community. More than one third of the world's 2,000 largest publicly traded companies have made some kind of net-zero commitment, and the list is growing quickly. A critical part of those corporate plans will be securing cleanly sourced electricity for their energy needs, but that requires that there is enough fossil-free electricity available on the grid for every company that prefers to use it. In 2021, renewable energy and nuclear power, combined, accounted for only about 37% of global electricity production. How can a company ensure that their electricity comes from among those fossil-free sources? And how can companies encourage the growth of clean electrical capacity, so that it will meet the growing demand of consumers?These kinds of questions are exactly what Doug Miller, Deputy Director of Market & Policy Innovation at the Clean Energy Buyers Institute (CEBI), aims to answer. CEBI is a non-profit organization that collaborates with policy makers, leading philanthropies, and energy market stakeholders to identify and expedite the implementation of clean energy market solutions. They have also worked closely with the World Resources Institute (WRI), who designed the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the most commonly used standards for companies to assess their carbon emissions impact. Doug and Shannon Miller open their hearts to share honestly about their service-first approach to family travel. After their newly adopted daughter from China needed open heart surgery, they did the only sane thing you can do with two weeks of "use it or lose it" vacation. They packed up their fresh-from-the-ER-brood and headed to Baja! When Doug realized his family was spending their "vacation" hunkered down on a wind-whipped beach so he could enjoy kite-boarding, they began exploring family-friendlier locations. One day a flat tire on their minivan led them to seek help nearby at Rancho Sordo Mundo, a home for the deaf and mute. Soon they realized why they had come to Baja.
