This week, to celebrate the 100th episode of My Weekly Mixtape, I am creating The Ultimate Mixtape by asking 65 different people (previous My Weekly Mixtape guests, friends of the show & the amazing Patreon Mixtapers) the same question: If you had to choose one song for the ultimate mixtape (any song / any genre), that would be locked away in a time capsule for others to discover years or decades for now…which song would you choose and why? Now, I'm not lost on the fact that the question is just a spin on the “desert island song” question that a lot of my guests have been asked countless times. The twist for the next few episodes is: I am taking those 65 song choices (all of which are from various bands, artists, decades, genres and tempos), and curating them into what I hope will be a properly sequenced playlist from a musical perspective! At the very least? This was a fun & unique twist on a question as old as interviews themselves. But at its best? Congratulations, you're listening to The Ultimate Mixtape!! This ep. includes the final 25 responses! Be sure to also check out Volume's 1 & 2 to get the full experience! Get ready to plug into a musical time machine with Alexa, an amazing content creator, and music enthusiast who knows how to turn up the volume on nostalgia. We'll ride shotgun with her through the decades, from the pulsating synth beats of Gary Newman's "Cars", to the slick moonwalk of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean". Discover how these iconic tracks not only punctuate Alexa's life but also serve as potent symbols of our shared human experience.Daring to venture beyond music's realm, we uncover the lesser-known layers of Alexa's interests. Join us as we dive into the deep end of her fascination with sharks and B-horror movies - a love so profound, it has her grooving to Heart's "Barracuda" and naming her stuffed shark Bruce. But the intrigue doesn't stop there. Get a peek into Alexa's spooky side with a tour of her podcast and her affection for Betty Bones, a rather fashionable skeleton with a knack for holiday dressing.Eventually, our conversation takes a spin around the '70s, filled with tales of Alexa's wild nights as David Bowie and the chilling urban legend of 'Rollercoaster of Love'. But every story circles back to the power of music. Alexa recalls intimate moments at Cure concerts and how Donna Summers' 'Bad Girls' became a beacon of joy. By the end of our journey, you'll see how music is not just a soundtrack to our lives, but a melody that resonates through our deepest connections. How taal is used to measure musical time?

Heyman Center for the Humanities at Columbia University Podcasts
New Books at SOF/Heyman: a podcast featuring audio from events at Columbia University, and interviews with the speakers and authors. What is musical time? Where is it manifested? How does it enter into our experience, and how do we capture it in our analyses? A compelling approach among works on temporality, phenomenology, and the ecologies of the new sound worlds, Enacting Musical Time argues that musical time is itself the site of the interaction between musical sounds and a situated, embodied listener, created by the moving bodies of participants engaged in musical activities. Author Mariusz Kozak describes musical time as something that emerges when the listener enacts her implicit knowledge about "how music goes," from deliberate inactivity, to such simple actions as tapping her foot in time with the beat, to dancing in a way that engages her entire body. Kozak explores this idea in the context of modernist and postmodernist musical styles, where composers create unfamiliar and idiosyncratic temporal experiences, blur the line between spectatorship and participation, and challenge conventional notions of form. Basing his discussion on the phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty and on the ecological psychology of J. J. Gibson, Kozak examines different aspects of musical structure through the lens of embodied cognition and what phenomenologists call "lived time." A bold new theory derived from an unprecedented fusion of research perspectives, Enacting Musical Time will engage scholars across a range of disciplines, from music theory, music cognition, cognitive science, continental philosophy, and social anthropology.

At Canada’s National Academy of Dance Education we know that dance teacher training, is so much more than learning steps. It is an understanding of various components of a dancer's training and technique, some of which include anatomy, dance injuries, dance history and music. To better support dancers’ “whole dance education” dance educators should be able to use music as a tool, as inspiration and method through which students can learn about their execution, performance and art form as a whole. Today we will focus on one exercise in ballet, “the adagio” to learn how time signatures can affect its execution. GUEST: Ms. Leal holds a BFA in Performing Arts from Providence College in Manitoba. She has worked as a piano accompanist for over 19 years with some of Canada’s most prestigious schools and companies including the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Alberta Ballet Company and Albert Ballet School. In addition to her work as a piano accompanist for ballet exams and Ms. Leal has also taught music to ballet teachers throughout various programs.
I had an exciting conversation with controversial music historian Wim Winters. Wim is an accomplished organist, pianist, harpsicordist, and clavicordist. He rustled a lot of feathers in the music community with his "whole beat" theory of reading historical metronome markings. He is passionate about discovering what composers actually had in mind when they wrote their music.www.authenticsound.orgAuthentic Sound Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8vR6VP-3o_SpdnEBrpYGiQSupport And If Love Remains:https://www.gearbubble.com/gbstore/andifloveremains
