Surfs up, Pixie Dusters! Today's episode features another overseas Mary-Kate and Ashley adventure with "Our Lips Are Sealed." This movie has it all: teen power dynamics, cute boys, and secret identities! Honestly, this family has got to be the worst one in the history of the witness protection program. But overall, the story is a lot of fun and the perfect example of wish fulfillment teen life in the 90s/early 2000s.Follow your new Disney besties on Instagram @pixiedusttwinspodcast and on TikTok @pixiedusttwinspodcastFollow Dan, honorary third host of the "Pixie Dust Twins" Podcast, and King of the Manifestos: @Dantaastic on Instagram and YouTubeHave ideas for the show? Anyone who knows The Go-Go's knows they got the beat. But in the recent television documentary about them, fans also learn the true story of how they got it, lost it, and found it again. The film shows where The Go-Gos are today: making new music together for the first time in 20 something years. We catch up with drummer, Gina Schock and listen, mesmerized as she tells her incredible story. Gina Schock, born Regina Ann Schock in Baltimore, Maryland, is celebrated as the powerhouse drummer of The Go-Go's, one of the most influential all-female rock bands in history. Raised in a working-class neighbourhood, Gina discovered her passion for drumming as a teenager, teaching herself the craft and dreaming of a life in music. Her ambition led her to move to Los Angeles in the late 1970s, where she joined The Go-Go's in 1979, just as the band began making waves in the punk scene. The Go-Go's were pioneers, becoming the first all-women band to achieve mainstream success while writing their own music and playing their own instruments. Gina's hard-hitting, high-energy drumming became a key element of the band's signature sound, driving hits like We Got the Beat, Vacation, and Our Lips Are Sealed. The band's debut album, Beauty and the Beat (1981), topped the Billboard 200 for six weeks, establishing The Go-Go's as trailblazers in both pop and rock music. Despite their success, the band faced challenges, including grueling tours and internal tensions, leading to their initial breakup in 1985. During this time, Gina underwent heart surgery for a congenital defect, a personal challenge that underscored her resilience. Post-Go-Go's, she pursued songwriting and producing, contributing to projects for stars like Miley Cyrus (Breakout) and Selena Gomez. She also ventured into acting and photography, showcasing her multifaceted creativity. The Go-Go's reunited several times over the years, maintaining their legacy through tours, new music, and a Broadway musical, Head Over Heels, which featured their songs. Their enduring influence was cemented when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, a milestone highlighting their groundbreaking achievements. Beyond music, Gina is also known for her vivacious personality, humour, and advocacy for women in the arts. She remains an inspiring figure, balancing her love for music with personal passions like photography and sharing her life story to empower future generations of musicians. Gina Schock joins us this week to provide an insight into her amazing world. If you'd like to know what songs she wrote, how she got her start, what life has been like for her over the years ... then you've come to the right place. I'm certain you'll enjoy hearing Gina Schock tell her story.

Send us a textThis episode, we look at what Rolling Stone magazine considers to be the best songs of the 80's. We have been critical of Rolling Stone in the past for the quality of their lists, and this time is no different. However, there's some good stuff in this list, which we're happy to acknowledge. Of course, we point out their failings as well – it'd be no fun if we didn't, would it?! In Rock News, we look at a new album from Coldplay (as if anybody cares!), the trials of Sean “Puffy” Combs, and The Beatles. Our “Album You Must listen to Before you Die” is 1985's The Nation's Saving Grace, by The Fall. Mick loves it, Jeff doesn't think much of it. So, what's new? Another fun episode. Enjoy. Beauty and the Beat Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine It's not quite right to say that the Go-Go's' 1981 debut, Beauty and the Beat, is where new wave caught hold in the U.S., but it's not quite wrong, either. Prior to this, there had certainly been new wave hits -- Blondie had been reaching the Top Ten for two years running -- but the Go-Go's ushered in the era of big, bright stylish pop, spending six weeks at the top of the U.S. charts and generating two singles that defined the era: the cool groove of “Our Lips Are Sealed” and the exuberant “We Got the Beat.” So big were these two hits that they sometimes suggested that Beauty and the Beat was a hits-and-filler record, an impression escalated by the boost the Go-Go's received from the just-launched MTV, yet that's hardly the case. Beauty and the Beat is sharp, clever, and catchy, explicitly drawing from the well of pre-Beatles ‘60s pop -- girl group harmonies, to be sure, but surf-rock echoes throughout -- but filtering it through the nervy energy of punk. With the assistance of Rob Freeman, producer Richard Gottehrer -- a veteran of the Strangeloves (“I Want Candy”) who also wrote the girl group standard “My Boyfriend's Back” -- sanded down the band's rougher edges, keeping the emphasis on the hooks and harmonies but giving the Go-Go's enough kick and jangle that at times the group resembles nothing less than early R.E.M., particularly on “How Much More” and “Tonite.” But this isn't Murmur; there is nothing murky about Beauty and the Beat at all -- this is infectiously cheerful pop, so hooky it's sometimes easy to overlook how well-written these tunes are, but it's the sturdiness of the songs that makes Beauty and the Beat a new wave classic.

Season one of Growing Up Millennial holds a really special place in our hearts: the direct-to-video (that's VHS to you, dear listeners) movies made by the Olsen Twins in the '90s and early aughts. These films were a staple of our combined childhood (even with our seven-year age difference), and Adri and Helene are here to dissect, discuss, and reminisce about all of them. We go through the plot, the fashion, the feminism, and we even give a voice to the voiceless in podcasting, the straight white cis dude. Even though we want to say that Our Lips Are Sealed to surprise our audience with which movies we're going to cover throughout these eight episodes, we can safely say that you'll get a full list pretty soon. Some may even say that you'll see it in a New York Minute. What to expect from our first episode: We hope you have your virtual passports, pretend airline tickets, and spiritual cross-body backpacks at the ready, because we're headed to Paris! What could be more iconic (or should we say iconique?) than to begin our Dualstar journey with the 1999 classic, Passport to Paris? Nothing, that's what. I mean, this movie had FASHION (yes, the usage of all caps was a necessary choice) and a romance for the ages (I'm looking at you J-Man & Brigitte). Pass us a note in class. On this edition of the Richard Crouse Show we'll meet Kevin Hegge, director of the documentary Tramps, which is now playing in theatres. His film has an up-close-and-personal look at the New Romantics, the countercultural scene that emerged in late 1970s' London. It united outsiders, misfits, and bohemians like Boy George, the scene's most famous member. It is a look back at a time when the artists starved but looked fabulous, but it's also a portrait of artists and their unswerving need to create, whether the canvas was the outrageous clothes they wore, the jewelry that adorned them, or the music they listened to. Tramps does a deep dive into the New Romantics as an art movement rather than solely a pop-cultural one. If you, like me, read magazines like New Musical Express, Face magazine or ID, you saw the photos and read the stories. Tramps brings the scene to vivid life. Then, we get to know Belinda Carlisle. As the lead singer of the Go Gos, who produced hits like "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat," she fronted the most successful all-female rock band of all time. As a solo artists, she topped the charts with songs like radio hits such as "Mad About You", "I Get Weak", "Circle in the Sand", "Leave a Light On", and "Heaven Is a Place on Earth.” Her new record, “Kismet,” marks her first new English language studio recording since 1997 and the triumphant reunion with hot making songwriter Diane Warren. Finally, I'll introduce you to Chris Nielsen and Bart Batchelor, the Vancouver based co-creators of “Psi Cops,” a new series on Adult Swim Canada and Stack TV. It's the animated story of two paranormal investigators at a company called Psi Cops, who investigate alleged sightings of aliens, ghosts, demons, and other hocus-pocus nonsense. Imagine Mulder and Scully from the X-Files… if they were played by Abbott and Costello. It's a fun show, and we'll tell you all about it, and how Chris and Bart made the leap from advertising to the world of animation.

We made it to the end of season 2!Season 2 was more exciting than we could have ever expected. We talked to Brigitte (THE Brigitte, the supermodel from Passport to Paris), a viral YouTube creator who met Mary-Kate and Ashley on a cruise, and an incredible collector and expert of all things Mary-Kate and Ashley. We've also connected with so many more Mary-Kate and Ashley fans and gotten closer our podcast's biggest goal-- proving that we are not alone ❤️So as a terrifying treat, we decided to spontaneously rank all of Mary-Kate and Ashley's feature films that we covered this season: Billboard Dad, Switching Goals, Passport to Paris, Our Lips Are Sealed, Winning London and Holiday in the Sun. We cannot stress enough how difficult this was and how unofficial this ranking is. We reserve the right to change our order in the future, and trust us, we WILL be ranking all of Mary-Kate and Ashley's films once we have finished them. But after finishing this golden era of MKA classics, we just couldn't help ourselves.Let us know if you agree or if you hate us now! And before next season, don't forget to rate & review, tell your other Mary-Kate and Ashley fanatic friends about the pod, and catch up on any episodes you missed. We're coming back for an epic season 3-- get ready!Find us on Social Media!Instagram: @theythoughtiwasyouTikTok: @theythoughtiwasyouBecca: @beccarothLani: @laniharmsThoughts/questions? On this episode of the It's Only Rock And Roll Podcast, we talk to drummer GINA SCHOCK, the outspoken, hard-rocking heartbeat behind rock's first #1 charting all-female band, The Go-Go's. Gina gives us a peek into her inner sanctum, pulling out some of her favorite 45's from an immense collection of not only vinyl, but additionally forty plus years of Go-Go's memorabilia – much of which is featured in her new coffee-table photobook: “Made In Hollywood – All Access With The Go-Go's”. She also offers a frank history of the band, from their meteoric rise from the underground punk scene to the top of the charts with hits like “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got The Beat”, as well as how a conflict over royalties almost scotched the band permanently. ---------------------------------- ֎ The Official GO-GO's Website – http://www.gogos.com ֎ To order “Made In Hollywood – All Access With The Go-Go's” - https://amzn.to/388ZWea Visit the 'It's Only Rock And Roll PODCAST' online at: ● Homepage – www.ItsOnlyRockAndRollPodcast.com ● Facebook – facebook.com/ItsOnlyRockAndRollPodcast/ ● YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCFB7uJ3dg4IKSxsNny9Jiw/videos ● Instagram - @itsonlyrockandrollpodcast Be sure to check out our all-new OFFICIAL IORR PODCAST STORE!
Mary-Kate. Ashley. And Simon in the middle?? On November 20th, 2000, the day before "Our Lips Are Sealed" was released on VHS, Mary-Kate and Ashley made their highly anticipated guest appearance on the hit WB family drama, 7th Heaven.Centered around a minister and his hot family, 7th Heaven was the longest-running series in the network's history, and "the Camdens" were as wholesome as you could get. But for their 96th episode, Mary-Kate and Ashley (aka the Murphy sisters) would walk on set as... the bad girls. And the press had a field day. Multiple news outlets ran features on how the 14 year-old twins would play "twin temptresses," "more bad than [Simon aka Aaron Carter] can handle." Lani, who had never seen an episode of 7th Heaven in her life, made sure to set her VCR to record this historic moment, and Becca, who was already a casual viewer of the show, made sure not to miss it. So we rewatched this episode for the first time since that fateful day in the fall of 2000, and realized... our girls are barely in this episode! They're not at all the main storyline and hardly get any airtime until well over halfway through. But as with all things Mary-Kate and Ashley, we'll take what we can get. Seeing them as "bad" girls is a delight, but seeing them as objects of the male gaze is... unnerving. We unpack what that felt like watching this episode as children, roll our eyes out of their sockets at Matt Camden's runaway bride, and puzzle over what 7th Heaven was in our culture. Where can you go when the world don't treat you right? The answer is... this podcast. CNN "7th Heaven" interviewE! On November 21st, 2000, nearly one full year after their cult classic Passport to Paris, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen released their second destination-inspired teen comedy, Our Lips Are Sealed filmed in Sydney, Australia.Neither Becca nor Lani have revisited this movie since the year it came out. In our memories, this movie was the hippest, wittiest, most alternative, most daring, most ahead-of-its-time movie in the Olsen twins canon. We were sure that we'd rediscover this gem and prove to the world that it has been woefully overlooked in the culture of 00s nostalgia. But then it was... not quite what we expected. This is absolutely an era where Mary-Kate and Ashley's style and swag was at an iconic, untouchable level. However, this movie struggles to live up to stars' magnetism, and the same writing team that hit a home run in Passport to Paris kept striking out in Our Lips Are Sealed. So we break down the script, theorize that boys in this movie weren't actually love interests, disagree on scenes that didn't work, and celebrate their style that came to define the fashion trends of 2001 (as Ashley tells us in the DVD extra was completely intentionally). At the end of the day, this movie is a joyful celebration of fashion, friends, and the down under, and we can't help but love it. After all, it's Mary-Kate and Allie. Ashley. Toxic family rules live at the center of a dysfunctional family system and are designed to keep secrets hidden, enable abuse, keep children in line and avoid responsibility while also preventing safety, growth and connection. Toxic family dynamics can have far-reaching impact on our lives as adults. Children of toxic parents are emotionally starved. The family dynamic functions around the needs, wants, desires, and chaos of the parent. Children are viewed as objects, things to be controlled, used and manipulated. There is no amount of storytelling we can do that will be more powerful than the societal standard held to never separate from family. We live with a grief not accepted or understood by society. https://www.barbara-whitfield.com/healing-the-child-withinhttps://drsherriecampbell.com/ Parody of Our Lips Are Sealed by Jane Wiedlin, and Terry Hall used for entertainment purposes only.
"It's not quite right to say that the Go-Go's' 1981 debut, Beauty and the Beat, is where new wave caught hold in the U.S., but it's not quite wrong, either. With the assistance of Rob Freeman, producer Richard Gottehrer -- a veteran of the Strangeloves (“I Want Candy”) who also wrote the girl group standard “My Boyfriend's Back” -- sanded down the band's rougher edges, keeping the emphasis on the hooks and harmonies but giving the Go-Go's enough kick and jangle that at times the group resembles nothing less than early R.E.M., particularly on “How Much More” and “Tonite.” But this isn't Murmur; there is nothing murky about Beauty and the Beat at all -- this is infectiously cheerful pop, so hooky it's sometimes easy to overlook how well-written these tunes are, but it's the sturdiness of the songs that makes Beauty and the Beat a new wave classic." - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All MusicSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/polyphonic-press1229/donations
Trailblazers. Pioneers. MTV 80s Icons. And at long last, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. Ladies and Gentlemen, The Go-Go's. Sherman and Ski remain baffled that it took 15 years after they first became eligible, that the Go-Go's received their first nomination for the Hall. Thankfully, the powers at be recognized that they had waited long enough and gave credit where credit was due: in the face of a record industry that had only found space for all-female singing groups, Belinda Carlisle (vocals), Charlotte Caffey (Guitar), Jane Wiedlin (Guitar), Kathy Valentine (Bass) and Gina Schock (Drums) showed the world that the Go Go's could more than hang with the boys: they could flip the script and usher in a musical revolution. Think about it: “We Got the Beat,” “Our Lips Are Sealed,” “Vacation”: three songs that defined the sound and the era of early 80s music, even without the synths: brilliant, post-punk pop gems, simple and clear to the point, unforgettable. And that list of classics doesn't even include their best song, the undeniably infectious “Head Over Heels” (featuring a bass breakdown for the ages courtesy of Ms. Valentine). Yes, written and performed by the Go-Go's. That should go without saying, but in the late 70s and early 80s it was unheard of for a group of five women to achieve that level of success on their own and on their own terms. Don't be fooled, though, this wasn't a singles band. Look at “Lust to Love” How Much More” “Turn to You” and their fierce anthem “This Town.” All elements of the Go-Go's can be found here too: the cool rock steady twin guitar attack of Caffey/Wiedlin, Belinda's angelic vocals rooted in punk rock (with a nice assist from Jane on backing vocals) and the Valentine/Schock rhythm section that remains a force of nature (We got the beat, indeed). By 1985, they were burned out and Belinda went on to a hugely successful solo career (“Mad About You” “Leave a Light On For Me” “Heaven Is a Place on Earth”) that suggests, had they stayed together, more hits would have followed (though we also shouldn't overlook Jane's Top 10 Hit “Rush Hour” and Ski would like to make a plug for Charlotte's post Go-Go's outfit The Graces, featuring “Lay Down Your Arms.”). You always got the sense that the Go-Go's felt they had unfinished business, and numerous reunions followed, and a fourth album in 2000, God Bless The Go-Go's, that is more than worthy to be included in their alongside their LPs from their 80s heyday, with an assist from Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong on “Unforgiven.” What followed? The Bangles, Hole, The Donnas, Liz Phair and, ahem, Elastica. And so many others. These women earned their rightful spot alongside rock's greatest and they're still at. Sherman and Ski will take two tickets at the 9:30 Club, please. See you there.

An incredible debut single, a cover version that's actually an original version, a surprising yet inevitable producer, and glam. We look at Our Lips Are Sealed, originally by The Go-Go's, covered by Fun Boy Three, and by Peppermint Creeps. Outro music is Cherish by The Association. How could it be anything else?
Ashlee and Bre can't hardly wait to jump into this week's episode! After watching the Season 5 two-parter "Our Lips Are Sealed" there is so much to talk about: Emma's extreme dieting habits, Manny's true love for a healthy pizza-body relationship, Peter-Peter the Secret Keeper, Snake's mall karaoke, and how the fuck can Paige stay friends with her GF and BFF after a public food fight? TW: In this episode, your hosts dish about their personal battles with body image issues and eating disorders. There are serious moments and there are jokes... because that's life and that's how it goes, friends. If you or someone you know are fighting a silent battle with your body or with an eating disorder (they usually go hand-in-hand) please seek help. It's not easy to undo a lifetime of shame surrounding the topic, so let's start by supporting each other first. You're doing great. Stay safe, stay smart, stay home, stay hot teens. The Go-Go's (somehow that always looks wrong) started out in the late 1970s as a punk band in Los Angeles, and they were a pretty solid presence in that city's Punk scene. But as they started to grow in prominence, they moved away from that edgy sound and into more of the pop scene. When IRS records finally signed them in 1980, they cut their first album, which included a re-recording of their first single. If you listened to college radio, you probably remember the original version of "We Got The Beat," which was an import here in the US and was actually part of their demo record. You probably also found yourself wondering what happened to it when you finally heard the song released as a single in the early days of 1982, while "Our Lips Are Sealed" was making its slow climb back down the charts. Well...wonder no more, because I've got that story for you right here. Click here for a transcript of this episode.

Authors on the Air host Pam Stack welcomes author and editor Holly West to the studio. Holly edited the new crime fiction anthology MURDER-A-GO-GOs. ABOUT THE BOOK: The Go-Go’s made music on their own terms and gave voice to a generation caught between the bra-burning irreverence of the seventies and the me-first decadence of the eighties. Anthems like “We Got the Beat,” “Our Lips Are Sealed,” and “Vacation” are an indelible part of our collective soundtrack, but more than that, they speak to the power and possibility of youth. Inspired by punk but not yoked to it, the Go-Go’s broke important musical ground by combining cheeky lyrics, clever hooks, and catchy melodies, perfectly capturing what it feels like to be young and female in the process. But beyond the Go-Go’s effervescent sound and cheerful pop stylings, a darkness underlies many of their lyrics and melodies, hinting at the heartache and frustration inherent in growing up. In other words, plenty to inspire murder and mayhem. Net proceeds from Murder-a-Go-Go’s benefit Planned Parenthood, a crucial provider of women’s affordable reproductive healthcare. With a foreword by Go-Go’s co-founder Jane Wiedlin and original stories by 25 kick-ass authors, editor Holly West has put together an all-star crime fiction anthology inspired by one of the most iconic bands of the eighties and beyond. On this week's 51%, she was the bassist for the Go-Go's. We spend the show with Kathy Valentine, who has written a memoir and a soundtrack. Kathy Valentine was the bassist for The Go-Go's, which became the first multi-platinum-selling, all-female band to play instruments themselves, write their own songs, and have a number-one album. Their debut album, “Beauty and the Beat,” spent six weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 and featured the hit songs “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed.” Valentine's memoir All I Ever Wanted: A Rock 'n' Roll Memoir, traces the path, which took her from her childhood in Texas to the height of rock ‘n roll stardom and the devastation after the band collapse. That's our show for this week. Thanks to Tina Renick for production assistance. Our executive producer is Dr. Alan Chartock. Our theme music is Glow in the Dark by Kevin Bartlett.
