On this week's episode, I'm joined by Thomas Negovan, who oversaw the reconstruction of Caligula: The Ultimate Cut. Combing through 96 hours of the original negatives, Tom rebuilt the film from the ground up in order to bring it closer in line with the vision of writer Gore Vidal, director Tinto Brass, and star Malcolm McDowell. We discussed some of the technical challenges of tracking down source materials, the challenge of reconstructing a film that felt entirely different from every version previously known, and how McDowell and costar Helen Mirren responded to the reconstituted picture. The Ultimate Cut debuted at Cannes last year and is available now via streaming, Blu-ray, and 4K from Drafthouse Films and Unobstructed View. (The Blu-ray and 4K sets also include a previous cut of the film; for more on that cut and its odd provenance, I'd recommend reading this note at Diabolik DVD.) We stand proudly on the altar of physical media, but some people take it to some truly different levels...On this episode we jump into a tribute to an iconic video store that had it's story evolve into something you couldn't even imagine.  On Blu-Ray and on demand platforms now, it's time for "Kim's Video'.Physical media reigns supreme in Kim's Video, an elegiac tribute to the iconic video store in New York City that inspired a generation of cinephiles before it mysteriously closed its doors and sent its legendary film archive to a small and slightly dubious Sicilian village for “safekeeping.” But what starts as an homage to cinema quickly becomes a rescue mission to ensure the eternal preservation of the beloved video collection. It's an ode to that obsession to be able to have that piece of cinema history in your hand, and this story of cinema itself becomes cinema in a way that has to be seen to be truly believed. We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with directors David Redmon and Ashley Saban to talk about the origins of wanting to tell this story, it's subsequent evolution and so very much more....

Podcast 2: The Sequel

Lions, Lions and More Lions! This week on the Podcast, we've gotten a call from Drafthouse Films to write a sequel to their 2015 re-release "Roar." This cult classic starring Melanie Griffith and Tippi Hendrin was recently deemed the most dangerous film ever made due to its use of real lions around real actors...will our sequel find ways to be even more dangerous? What actors could we possibly want to surround with dozens of lions? How do the LAPD, The Dark Knight Rises and Morbius play into all of this? Will it be a legacy sequel or something based in the 80s like the original? What is Cancel Cove? Is this demonic film "awesome" like Sam says, or a narcissistic nightmare like Max says? What's the proper price for pretzel bites nowadays? Will this film cause a divorce like the original one did? Listen to the episode to hear answers to all these questions, and learn more behind the scenes stories about the most dangerous film ever made.Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Pod2thesequelFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pod2_thesequel/Theme song by Charle Wallace: https://charlewallace.bandcamp.com/Support our Feature film, Inter-State, currently in Post-Production: https://fiscal.thegotham.org/project.cfm/4383/INTER-STATE/

Sean Mullin is an award-winning filmmaker.  His critically-acclaimed feature film debut as a writer/director — Amira & Sam — won the top prize at numerous festivals and was distributed theatrically by Drafthouse Films. He's the co-writer/co-producer of the film, Semper Fi – alongside Oscar-nominated director Henry-Alex Rubin (Murderball) and Oscar-nominated producer David Lancaster (Whiplash).  Lionsgate released the film theatrically in 2019. He's the writer/director of a feature-length documentary – Kings of Beer – about the world's most intense brewmaster competition, which was released theatrically in 2019.  He's the writer/director of It Ain't Over - a feature-length documentary about baseball legend, Yogi Berra – which will be released in 2022.Prior to his filmmaking career, Sean served in the military. He was stationed in Germany as an army officer, but finished his time as a Captain in the New York Army National Guard – where he was a first responder on September 11th, 2001. For several months, he spent his days working as the Officer in Charge of the soldiers stationed at Ground Zero – and his nights performing stand-up comedy.Sean holds an MFA from Columbia University and a B.S. from The United States Military Academy at West Point. He is a member of the Writers Guild of America (WGA), as well as the Producers Guild of America (PGA).  Sean is represented by UTA. He resides in Los Angeles, where he runs Five By Eight Productions and is a guest lecturer at USC, AFI and West Point.Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra is one of baseball's greatest. He amassed ten World Series rings, 3 MVP awards and 18 All-Star Game appearances. He caught the only perfect game in World Series history. Yet for many his deserved stature was overshadowed by his simply being himself and being more recognized more for his unique personality, TV commercial appearances and unforgettable “Yogi-isms,” initially head-scratching philosophical nuggets that make a lot more sense the more you think about them. In telling the whole story, It Ain't Over gives Berra his due in following the life of a savvy, commanding, bad-ball hitting catcher with a squat frame but also a D-Day veteran, loving husband and father and, yes, product endorser and originator (mostly) of his own brand of proverbs now ingrained into everyday life.Granddaughter Lindsay Berra tells his story along with his sons, former Yankee teammates, players he managed, writers, broadcasters, and admirers (such as Billy Crystal), plus photos and footage on and off the diamond. Berra famously said,“I'd be pretty dumb if I started being something I'm not,”and It Ain't Over lovingly makes clear he stayed who he was for the benefit of baseball and everyone else.

With almost the entire world under some form of quarantine, the people watched "Tiger King." The insane Netflix documentary series inspired the Old Millennials to seek out the craziest BIG CAT movie of all time - the little-seen adventure film, "ROAR" from 1981. The movie, directed by and starring a crazy guy named Noel Marshall, didn't get an official release in the United States until Drafthouse Films bought the rights in 2015. No animals were harmed in the making of the movie, but, no joke, something like 70 cast and crew members sustained lion and tiger-related injuries. Cinematographer Jan de Bont (who would later direct "Speed" and "Twister") even got scalped by a a motherf*#%ing lioness. Roar and Tiger King podcast - Old Millennials Remember Movies Marshall's then wife Tippi Hedren and step-daughter Melanie Griffith star in "Roar," a movie about... well there isn't much plot to reveal. Basically, dozens of lions, tigers, panthers and other big cats attack and terrorize a family while the patriarch of the household pretends that it's totally normal to let a hundred blood-soaked killing machines live inside his house 24 hours a day. There's also an elephant with MURDER in its heart. After a discussion on Netflix's "Tiger King," Old Millennials hosts Tyler and Angela discuss one of the most baffling and terrifying films of all time. Tyler is even convinced that Steven Spielberg modeled the raptor kitchen sequence in "Jurassic Park" after a few specific stretches of "Roar." You may not have seen "Roar" when you were young (nobody did), but you need to see it now. You can find it online through a certain mega-popular video streaming service. As it turns out, Katy is the Earthly incarnation of an ancient evil by the name of Sateen, an intergalactic supernatural entity who was vanquished many light years ago. Host Ryan Oliver made the picks this time, and as usual he’s joined by Oktay Ege Kozak and Erik McClanahan. Ryan’s overrated selection is none other than Terry Gilliam‘s “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” an adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson‘s seminal and celebrated gonzo novel. And completing the substance abuse marathon, he naturally chose “Wake In Fright,” the 1971 mix of Ozploitation and Australian New Wave restored and brought back for distribution by Drafthouse Films a few years ago. Both films feature superhuman levels of drug consumption, but all the hosts agree that ‘Fright’ is a far better, and sadly lesser-seen/known film. Listen to find out why.
