Episode 71: Harvey Mason Sr. You've heard Harvey Mason Sr., whether you realize it or not. From the iconic grooves of Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters to the GRAMMY-winning “Kiss From A Rose” by Seal, Harvey's drumming has shaped music history across genres, decades, and mediums — albums, film scores, and TV alike. He's not only a musical powerhouse, but a dear friend, and in this episode, we finally sat down to dig into his legendary run — especially his work with Herbie Hancock and the Head Hunters album. Harvey shares the story of how that band came together, the sessions behind Chameleon and Watermelon Man, and why he chose not to tour with them at the height of their success. We also dive into his solo career — how it started, how it evolved, and the surprising role Clive Davis played in making it all happen. Harvey opens up about his long-standing friendships and collaborations with Quincy Jones and Chick Corea, his approach to fatherhood (including raising his sons Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, and Max Mason, former VP of Quincy Jones Productions), and how he built a legacy both on and off the kit. Fun fact: Vic Firth was Harvey's teacher — and Harvey still receives royalties from the early days of Vic Firth drumsticks! We also get into his stunning new album Changing Partners: Trios 2, featuring the likes of Chick Corea, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, James Genus, Dave Grusin, Stanley Clarke. This conversation is a masterclass in musicianship, legacy, and love for the craft. Enjoy my sit-down with the incomparable Harvey Mason Sr. ‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. Judith Sanders - The Huntsman: A Psychological Thriller. This is episode 598 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Judith Sanders was born and raised in New Jersey, where she spent most of her childhood exploring the great outdoors and dreaming of one day becoming a nurse. After graduating high school, she pursued her passion for healthcare and earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Graceland University.   The Huntsman is her fourth novel. Her first book, Crescent Veil, is a novel about germ warfare which Heartland Reviews praised as 'nonstop action based on the real deal by authors who should know what they are presenting'. Other books by Judith - In His Stead and Star Finder She was an Indie Excellence Award Finalist for In His Stead and was shortlisted for Chanticleer International Book Awards for Star Finder. She has been featured in interviews by dozens of news media outlets.   Judith's dedication to her profession led her to work on the front lines in community hospitals and as a civilian nurse at the US Army's lead infectious Disease Institute in Maryland, where she gained invaluable experience and knowledge that would shape her life and career.   After raising three boys and moving around, living in Somerville, NJ, San Antonio Tx, Albany, NY, Frederick and Clarksburg MD, Phoenixville, PA, and Leland/Wilmington NC, she and her husband finally settled in rural New Hampshire, where she found solace in the quiet lakeside days and evenings that inspire her writing.   Judith's extensive experience in nursing has not only helped her develop a keen sense of empathy and understanding for people from all walks of life but has also allowed her to draw inspiration for her writing from the stories of real people living and struggling through life one chapter at a time. Her best stories are a collage of bits and pieces taken from these experiences, creating a rich tapestry of characters and situations that resonate with readers of all ages. Frank is Judith Sanders' husband of 42 years and was coauthor on Judith's first book “CRESCENT VEIL”, a fiction novel about the hunt for a biologic weapons terrorist on the loose in the Middle East.   Frank is trained as a medical virologist and had a career in the military (US Army Lieutenant Colonel, retired) and then civilian pharmaceutical medicine developing vaccines to help prevent infectious diseases before retiring from practice in 2022. In the course of Judith's novels Dr. Malinoski has supported and facilitated the publication and promotion of her works.  Frank has been a confidant to Judith in her writing and an early reviewer of her books.  Judith is known for taking bits and pieces of real people she has met to mold the characters she writes about although Frank believes he was not a model for THE HUNTSMAN.   Frank's first reaction after reading THE HUNTSMAN was to decide if he should hide the kitchen knife sets.   Education: BA from Colby College PhD from Rutgers University MD from Albany Medical College of Union University A little bit about The Huntsman… ICU nurse Max Mason fears his pregnant wife is the latest victim of a serial killer who has terrorized their small New Hampshire town. The investigation is at a standstill as the prime suspect, Lincoln Raider, is in a coma. In a desperate and unethical act, Max sits at Lincoln's bedside night after night employing brainwashing techniques and subliminal suggestion to convince the suspect they are kindred-spirits, hoping it will lead to a confession or at least a clue. When Lincoln awakens, he draws Max into a whirlpool of terror, deception, and violence, ultimately pulling Lincoln's wife and daughter into the vortex as well. Cool story! Page turner! Awesome talk! On June 15, 1920 a white mob killed three young Black men accused of the alleged rape of a white woman. At a Minnesota Humanities Center event on Monday, speakers reflected on the legacy of lynching and racial violence in Minnesota.--Feven Gerezgiher reports: June 15 marks the anniversary of the 1920 Duluth lynching, when a white mob killed three young Black men accused of the alleged rape of a white woman. At a Minnesota Humanities Center event on Monday, law professor John Bessler said racially motivated killings are not uncommon in Minnesota history. In the 19th century, both state sanctioned executions and lynchings occurred in Minnesota with executions fueled by this desire for vengeance or revenge and lynchings fueled by societal outrage at those responsible or thought to be responsible for heinous crimes.Bessler referred to examples like the 1862 mass hanging outside Mankato of 38 Dakota men charged with war crimes, the largest mass execution in U.S. history. In addition to the public lynching of three men, a fourth - Max Mason - was convicted of the rape, despite there being no supporting evidence. He served five years in prison after which he was released on the condition that he leave the state. He died in Memphis in 1942. Last June, 100 years later, lawyers Jerry Blackwell and Corey Gordon won Mason a posthumous pardon. The pardon came just weeks after the murder of George Floyd. Blackwell said the pardon is only a small steppingstone on the path to racial justice. The fact that the majority of posthumous pardons have gone to African-Americans underscores the importance of the posthumous pardon as a vehicle for shining light on the racial injustices of the past and also helping the nation itself as a whole with curing some of the problems we have with social and moral amnesia. //  And we can't address or fix that which we don't acknowledge even exists. The pardon was the first of its kind in Minnesota.

Communication Strategies Inspired By A Chessboard With Max Mason

Be The Drop - Investigating Brand Storytelling

Imagine finding a void and filling it with a community that you help to create with imagination and strategy. Chess is a very strategic and thoughtful game, to become a master chess player takes practice, skill and sound strategy. It's these principles that Max Mason, of The Henry Austin Restaurant, uses to inspire his next move in business. From developing communication strategies to professional development opportunities, here's some insight into what makes Max Mason a highly effective business owner. Impacting Community with a Subliminal and Intelligent Connection Bringing interesting people together by using their strengths is the key for building a new community. When it comes to strategy, Max is never sure what chess piece he is, but he believes in using an energetic approach to getting things done. Building a community can be a very long game, and Max is in it for the long haul. Passion enthusiasm and energy arehis keys to moving forward. Motivating Community to Take Action and Delivering on What You Say People want to support new businesses and new experiences, but they also want familiarity. Letting people know what they are going to get and then making sure you and your constituents deliver on those promises will create trust. It is absolutely paramount to not only deliver but to over deliver and let people walk away knowing what to expect. When it comes to negativity, sometimes accepting and being ok with the prospect of it is the key. You can't please everyone. Social Platforms and Emphasizing the Positive There was a time when Twitter was the king of social media, but with a visual product like unique food items Instagram is a very effective medium. People love to see what it is you offer and especially in a restaurant where what the food looks like is as important as what it tastes like. A brilliant strategy suggested by Max is to use social media to tell your own story - no one knows your story or tells it as well as you can. Also, stay away from using platforms that you don't understand - it is possible to do more harm than good if you don't know what you are doing. The same applies to hiring other people to do your social media. Take control of your own voice behind the narrative. Be The Drop Communication Tip Max's top communication tips are to be honest and intelligent. If you face a problem honestly, you can never get into trouble. About Max Max Mason is the owner of The Henry Austin Restaurant & Bar. Max has built his communication skills across a broad range of experiences. He has been a maritime archaeologist who made charts of the Antarctic and a festival organizer. Now, he is the man behind The Henry Austin Restaurant & Bar which serves locally sourced food and the finest wines. He opened The Henry Austin in a building that had been empty for the last 6 years, but prior to that it had been one of the cities busiest restaurants for 40 years. Working with the city council and other business owners, Max is building and revitalizing the midtown community of Adelaide. He is passionate about this community because this is the group that Max and his restaurant connect with. A chess set symbolizes Max's approach to business and interacting with his community. He uses strategy to decide his next move and how it will impact his community. He is also cognizant of the reaction his community will have to the decisions he makes. "I'm an unbearable asshole! I get really wound up when I go out for dinner and (staff) don't give a damn." So when British restauranteur Max Mason was hiring staff for the Henry Austin, perhaps Adelaide's most ambitious hospitality project, he turned experienced applicants away. He brought in an acting coach to teach staff about human interaction, and also taught staff chess to entertain guests while they wait for their date. This unconventional approach isn't unusual for for Max. In England, he once employed a homeless man as his head chef and convicted murderers as kitchen staff. He also thinks differently about the business of hospitality. After being lured to Adelaide's historic and vacant Chesser Cellars building by a friend and also the South Australian government's Renew Adelaide department, Max adapted to his surroundings. He called it the Henry Austin, and moulded his ideas for the restaurant, bar and bottle shop around the dilapidated building and turned it's weaknesses into strengths. The small plate menu of modern Australian yum cha is easy to run up and down stairs and there are flexible and unique spaces for functions. Amazingly, Max's bottle shop is the first of it's kind; he holds the 8,000 wines and pays winemakers as they sell. He's cut out distributors, and they hate him for it. The Henry Austin is just one chapter in Max's story. He travelled the world as a maritime archaeologist and then a British Naval Officer before getting into the restaurant game. He then developed quite a reputation in London and Oxford, before being brought out to Adelaide for pop up projects such as the Adelaide Festival restaurant project, Lola's Pergola. Enjoy truly unique insights about food, wine, hospitality, business and life from the eccentric and energetic Max Mason at the Henry Austin.
