Episode 71: Harvey Mason Sr. You've heard Harvey Mason Sr., whether you realize it or not. From the iconic grooves of Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters to the GRAMMY-winning “Kiss From A Rose” by Seal, Harvey's drumming has shaped music history across genres, decades, and mediums — albums, film scores, and TV alike. He's not only a musical powerhouse, but a dear friend, and in this episode, we finally sat down to dig into his legendary run — especially his work with Herbie Hancock and the Head Hunters album. Harvey shares the story of how that band came together, the sessions behind Chameleon and Watermelon Man, and why he chose not to tour with them at the height of their success. We also dive into his solo career — how it started, how it evolved, and the surprising role Clive Davis played in making it all happen. Harvey opens up about his long-standing friendships and collaborations with Quincy Jones and Chick Corea, his approach to fatherhood (including raising his sons Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, and Max Mason, former VP of Quincy Jones Productions), and how he built a legacy both on and off the kit. Fun fact: Vic Firth was Harvey's teacher — and Harvey still receives royalties from the early days of Vic Firth drumsticks! We also get into his stunning new album Changing Partners: Trios 2, featuring the likes of Chick Corea, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, James Genus, Dave Grusin, Stanley Clarke. This conversation is a masterclass in musicianship, legacy, and love for the craft. Enjoy my sit-down with the incomparable Harvey Mason Sr. ‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. Today I share some thoughts I had after listening to the Decoder podcast with Harvey Mason Jr., the CEO of the nonprofit that runs the Grammys. I go into the problems of institutions and how we may be able to do things differently if we take a more decentralized, anarchist approach to organizations, power, and social support.
Harvey Mason, Jr is CEO of the Recording Academy, the nonprofit organization most famous for the Grammy Awards. We spoke right before this year's Grammy nominations came out, and you'll hear us talk a whole lot about the changes he's tried to make with how the awarding membership works. I always say to watch what's happening to the music industry because it's a preview into what will happen to every other creative industry five years later. My chat with Harvey really drove the point home: AI, diversity, streaming distribution... it's all here, and all the tensions that come with. Also, ‘Fast Company' associate editor David Salazar talks with Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy. His tenure of the past 3 years comes amid a cultural discussion about whether or not the Grammys and the Academy are still relevant. They chatted about diversifying the Grammy voting process, advocating for artists, and how Mason feels about AI in the music industry.

ABOUT BO BASKORO:Bo Baskoro is a passionate alt/pop artist from the Pacific Northwest, his music is known for its percussive ear candy, honest lyrics, and energizing production. Exuding an heir of nostalgia, he has worked closely with co-producer Justin Abel to create a unique sound that seamlessly captures his core identity.

In this episode, we welcome back the CEO of the Recording Academy, Harvey Mason Jr., to discuss the pressing issues currently facing musicians of color, such as the advancement of AI-generated music, the struggle for fair compensation, and the rise of Regional Mexican Music as a global force. We explore how the Grammys are addressing these issues, and pose the question: Will AI ever win a Grammy for Record of the Year? Segment 1: Purpose of Grammy's on the Hill Harvey Mason Jr. discussed the importance of Grammy's on the Hill, an annual advocacy event in Washington DC, which supports three crucial bills: The Hits Act, the American Music Fairness Act, and the RAP Act aim to address fair compensation, creative rights, and freedom of expression for artists. He explains how these bills could be transformative for artists of color, reducing the racial wealth gap and providing better financial opportunities. Segment 2: Challenges Faced by Artists of Color Mason acknowledges the historical lack of rights and limited monetization opportunities for artists of color. He recognizes the challenges faced by musicians in the industry and stresses the need for collective action to fight for their rights. He emphasizes the importance of valuing and supporting the creative community. Segment 4: Live Event Ticketing Reform Mason emphasizes the need for reform in the live event ticketing marketplace, discussing predatory practices, lack of transparency, and unfair ticket pricing that prevents fans from enjoying live performances and artists from receiving their fair share. He explains the Academy's efforts to work with Congress, bring stakeholders together, and address these issues in order to gain reform support. Segment 5: The RAP Act and Artistic Expression Mason explains the significance of the RAP Act, which seeks to protect artists from having their lyrics used as evidence against them in criminal trials. He discusses the importance of ensuring that artistic expression is not used as evidence and the ongoing efforts to pass this legislation at the state and federal levels. He emphasizes protecting artists' rights and freedom of speech. Segment 6: The American Music Fairness Act Mason discusses the American Music Fairness Act, which aims to establish performance royalties for songs played on AM/FM radio. He highlights the lack of performance royalties for artists in the United States, making it one of three countries without such provisions. Mason emphasizes the importance of providing equitable compensation for artists and the potential economic benefits for the music industry. Segment 7: AI's Impact on Music and Grammy Potential Mason addresses the rise of AI in music creation and its implications for the industry. He explains that AI-generated works are currently ineligible for Grammy consideration, as they are not copyrightable. Nevertheless, he recognizes the creative potential of AI and emphasizes the need for thoughtful regulation and safeguards to protect human creativity and ensure fairness. Segment 8: Concerns about AI and Cultural Appropriation Mason acknowledges the ethical concerns surrounding AI-generated music and the potential for cultural appropriation. He expresses the Academy's concern about protecting artists' faces, voices, and names from exploitation without permission or license. He emphasizes the need for regulations to prevent unauthorized use of artists' likeness and vocal sound, regardless of race. Segment 9: The Rise of Regional Mexican Music Mason reflects on the borderless nature of music and the opportunity for people to explore and appreciate different genres and cultures. He discusses the global impact of Regional Mexican Music, highlighting its success on streaming platforms. He emphasizes the power of music to connect people, foster understanding, and create positive change, making it an exciting time for the industry. Learn more about your ad choices. Harvey Mason Jr. CEO Of The Recoding Academy says there was never a threat to discontinue the Best Reggae Album Category at the Grammys and there has been over 700 submissions over the last 5 years. Over the years there has been reports from Grammy voting members that the reggae category has been under threat of being removed from the awards and that it makes no sense to even consider a dancehall category. I asked him about the truth of those assertions and Harvey says that is far from the truth and indeed reggae has had many good submission over the years.

If you've ever wondered what music publishers do on the “record side” of the music industry, you're going to find out on this week's episode of TAXI TV! Publishing executive Andrea Torchia has been in the music business for her entire adult life. She's the daughter of legendary record producer, Denny Diante, and learned how to pick hits at a very early age. Here's an excerpt from her bio: While other teenage girls might have enjoyed sleepovers, Andrea was evaluating playbacks at Devonshire and Conway studios. When her dad would bring boxes of demos, the two listened intently. “As he would break them down, I was his secretary,” Andrea remembers. “I might write ‘Lyrics not strong enough in the hook, ‘needs a bridge' or ‘double chorus not necessary.' I learned all about song structure.” While barely out of college, she began working in A&R, promotion and publicity at Chrysalis/ EMI while learning the music publishing business. As Creative Manager at Rondor Music Publishing, she represented contemporary and classic catalogs including the iconic songs of Gerry Goffin and Carole King. As Senior Creative Director of Zomba Music Publishing, she placed songs, connected writers and artists, and facilitated a roster with Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Macy Gray, and Justin Timberlake. At Universal Music Publishing, named Senior Director of Creative Services, she formulated relationships for Ron “Neff-U” Feemster, Harvey Mason Jr., and Lamont Dozier among others, while attaining covers for the company's extensive repertoire. Her valuable industry experience led to her appointment as Vice President, A&R for TAXI Music, where Andrea achieved multiple label, film television and commercial placements for the company's songwriters. Tapped as Vice President, Creative, with Razor & Tie Music Publishing, she worked the company's multiple format catalogs, while guiding creative input and fostering partnerships both domestically and internationally. Two long-term consulting endeavors – with pop powerhouse Rock Mafia Recordings, and 1111/Universal Music Publishing, a co-venture with 16- time Grammy winner David Foster, preceded her tenure as VP Creative with the U.S. division of the Japanese company Avex. Andrea expedited a diverse roster ranging from the legendary Burt Bacharach to her signee, hit songwriter-producer Tommy Brown, whose number one Billboard debuts included “Thank U Next” and “7 Rings” for Ariana Grande, plus songs and productions for Juice Wrld, Meghan Trainor and many others. It was at Avex that Andrea signed The Attire, sparking their transformation into a modern pop duo. Post Avex, she continued the artist development process as co-founder and Senior VP, Creative at Base Station Media. Don't Miss This Episode! We're really excited to have Andrea join us so we can get a real insider's look at what goes on behind the scenes at huge publishing companies today, and how things in the publishing world have evolved over the last decade or two!

On Episode Four of Through These Doors: A FAME Studios Podcast, Rodney Hall is honored to welcome Harvey Mason Jr., Recording Academy Chair and Interim President, CEO of Harvey Mason Media and Executive Music Producer, for a deeply engaging conversation that delves into their shared experiences growing up in the music industry, their favorite projects, and the making of the Aretha Franklin biopic “Respect” starring Jennifer Hudson — coming to theaters in 2021.
Harvey Mason Jr. has had a pretty wild ride as Interim CEO and President of the Recording Academy. He was tapped for the top post just days before the Grammys took place in January 2020. He then spent the rest of the year helping musicians make it through the pandemic via the Academy's MusiCares initiative, responded to the social justice movement by launching the Black Music Collective project, and more recently he made the tough call to push back the 2021 Grammys show to March 14th, in reaction to the COVID-19 conditions in California. Music is Mason's life's blood and he is on a mission with the non-profit Recording Academy to uplevel the industry as it faces the new normal.
