Episode 71: Harvey Mason Sr. You've heard Harvey Mason Sr., whether you realize it or not. From the iconic grooves of Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters to the GRAMMY-winning “Kiss From A Rose” by Seal, Harvey's drumming has shaped music history across genres, decades, and mediums — albums, film scores, and TV alike. He's not only a musical powerhouse, but a dear friend, and in this episode, we finally sat down to dig into his legendary run — especially his work with Herbie Hancock and the Head Hunters album. Harvey shares the story of how that band came together, the sessions behind Chameleon and Watermelon Man, and why he chose not to tour with them at the height of their success. We also dive into his solo career — how it started, how it evolved, and the surprising role Clive Davis played in making it all happen. Harvey opens up about his long-standing friendships and collaborations with Quincy Jones and Chick Corea, his approach to fatherhood (including raising his sons Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, and Max Mason, former VP of Quincy Jones Productions), and how he built a legacy both on and off the kit. Fun fact: Vic Firth was Harvey's teacher — and Harvey still receives royalties from the early days of Vic Firth drumsticks! We also get into his stunning new album Changing Partners: Trios 2, featuring the likes of Chick Corea, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, James Genus, Dave Grusin, Stanley Clarke. This conversation is a masterclass in musicianship, legacy, and love for the craft. Enjoy my sit-down with the incomparable Harvey Mason Sr. ‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. Tonight's Jazz Feature is one of the most individual and passionate voices of the alto saxophone William "Sonny" Criss. The album is his second for Prestige Records called "Portrait of Sonny Criss". He recorded for Prestige from 1966 to 1969 and these albums remain his best known. Sonny here is accompanied by the great under rated Walter Davis Jr. on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Alan Dawson on drums and was done on March 23, 1967 at Rudy Van Gelder's Studio. The album mixes standard tunes and a couple of Jazz favorites but each track demonstrates Sonny's passionate sound and intensity. A musical portrait indeed of an unsung great: Sonny Criss.

With all the "Sonnys" in Jazz, especially those who are saxophone players, one who seems always to be forgotten is William "Sonny" Criss. He is tonight's Jazz feature artist. Sonny had been around for a few years but his career was rather spotty but in 1965 he sent a demo tape to Prestige Record's producer Don Schlitten and Sonny was signed to a contract and recorded seven superb albums for Prestige from 1966 to 1969. We hear his initial date tonight recorded in RVG Studio on October 21,1966, 2 days before Sonny's 39th Birthday. Sonny appears with Walter Davis Jr. on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and the magnificent Alan Dawson on drums. The repertoire of 8 tunes is mostly standards but Walter Davis composed one and Sonny composed one also. As the cover of the album states "here is an alto saxophonist whose consummate artistry approaches perfection". That quote is no exaggeration and I'm sure you'll agree. "This is Criss!" tonight's Jazz Feature.

Kenny Aronoff is one of the most influential and in-demand drummers and percussionists in the world. He has entertained millions of people with his drumming, has played on thousands of records, and has been the “go-to” drummer for the biggest stars in music while providing the beat of American culture over four decades! https://kennyaronoff.com/ Kenny grew up in a big country farmhouse in a small town of 3,000 people in the hills of western Massachusetts. He was a self-taught drummer who at the young age of 16 decided to learn how to play timpani, mallets, and legit snare drum. He studied and played with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, including world-renowned timpanist Vic Firth. He went on to study for one year at the university of Massachusetts and four years at Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana, where among other honors, he was awarded the school's prestigious performer's certificate. During summer breaks, when he wasn't studying timpani with Vic Firth, he played in symphony orchestras at the Aspen Music Festival (run by the Juilliard School of Music) and the Tanglewood Music Festival (run by the Boston Symphony Orchestra). After graduating, Kenny was offered timpani positions in several symphony orchestras, but instead said “no” because he still wanted to be in a rock ‘n' roll band and be part of a team of musicians that recorded music and toured the world, just like The Beatles did. Kenny spent one year studying drum set with Alan Dawson in Boston and Gary Chester in New York before moving back to Bloomington to start his own band, “Streamwinner“. "Pack Up, Coming For You" Tomas Fujiwara's Triple Double: March (Firehouse 12 Records, 2022) Tomas Fujiwara, Gerald Cleaver, Mary Halvorson, Brandon Seabrook, Ralph Alessi, Taylor Ho Bynum. Tomas Fujiwara is a Brooklyn-based drummer and composer. Described as “a ubiquitous presence in the New York scene…an artist whose urbane writing is equal to his impressively nuanced drumming” (Troy Collins, Point of Departure), Tomas is an active player in some of the most exciting music of the current generation, with his bands Triple Double (with Gerald Cleaver, Mary Halvorson, Brandon Seabrook, Ralph Alessi, and Taylor Ho Bynum), Tomas Fujiwara & The Hook Up (with Jonathan Finlayson, Brian Settles, Halvorson, and Michael Formanek) and The Tomas Fujiwara Trio (with Alessi and Seabrook); his collaborative duo with cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum; the collective trio Thumbscrew (with Halvorson and Formanek); and a diversity of creative sideman work with forward-thinking peers like Tomeka Reid and Matana Roberts. In The New York Times, Nate Chinen writes, “Drummer Tomas Fujiwara works with rhythm as a pliable substance, solid but ever-shifting. His style is forward-driving but rarely blunt or aggressive, and never random. He has a way of spreading out the center of a pulse while setting up a rigorous scaffolding of restraint...A conception of the drum set as a full-canvas instrument, almost orchestral in its scope.” Born and raised in Boston, MA, Tomas studied with legendary drummer and teacher Alan Dawson for eight years before moving to New York at the age of 17. He is currently a member of ensembles led by Taylor Ho Bynum, Mary Halvorson, Matana Roberts, Nicole Mitchell, Matt Bauder, and Tomeka Reid, in addition to projects with artists such as Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, Michael Formanek, Ben Goldberg, and Benoit Delbecq, and has performed at festivals and venues across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East. He also has many experiences outside the jazz realm, including a five-year run with the Off-Broadway show Stomp and performances with the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Fela!, featuring Patti Labelle and members of Antibalas. When my guest went there it was a brotherhood of 300 men and woman who studied under the masters like Herb Pomeroy, Ray Santizzi, Alan Dawson and Jaki Byard and had opportunities to play live and get loose at venues like The Jazz Workshop, Lennie's on the Turnpike and Latin Salsa Dance Halls. In fact even if you didn't go to Berklee you could still sit in on lectures and jams. My guest today is a guitar player who is prolific in melodic sequencing and ferocious output. He plays the electric guitar, mandolin and piano strumming his way to sublimation with Jack Dejohnette, Billy Cobham, Colin Walcott and George Marsh, Joe Beck, Tom Knific, Dave Holland Jan Hammer and Johnny Hammond Smith. His flow and his ideas and both alto and tenor saxophones is unparalleled. Stitt recorded prolifically and mostly in a quartet setting with piano bass and drums or with organ, guitar and drums. Here he is on one of his finest outings done a few days after his birthday on Feb. 8,1972. Stitt is backed by a "Cadillac" rhythm section of Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Alan Dawson on drums. Our Jazz Feature album is called "Tune Up" and Stitt offers us his interpretations of some good standards and some Jazz originals. As always he is masterful and one can hear on this recording why he was everyone's favorite. Sonny Stitt...Jazz mastery!

The Berklee College of Music is ubiquitous with musicians worldwide. When we think of the great institutions of education along with the world’s greatest musicians Berklee is routinely mentioned in both instances. However, with any topic of conversation that conjures legendary tales there are as many negative connotations as positive. In this episode we cover everything you’d want to know about the school from a gentleman who has been a part of the faculty for 36 years, John Ramsay. Ramsay, a Massachusetts native, was a self-taught drummer who soon realized that if he was going to make a living as a musician he’d have to seriously learn his craft. Through meeting Max Roach at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst he was ultimately steered toward private lessons with master drummer/instructor, Alan Dawson. With Dawson he learned the legendary methods associated with Ted Reed’s ‘Syncopation’, soloing with Stone’s ‘Stick Control’, and Alan’s creation of the ‘Rudimental Ritual’. After several years Ramsay became the second drummer and tour manager in Art Blakey’s big band. Between this experience along with side-man duties with many other legendary jazz artists Ramsay bolstered his resume leading to his hiring at the Berklee College of Music in 1982. John’s list of Berklee credentials includes copious classroom and applied teaching along with an administrative stint as chair of the percussion department. In our chat he describes exactly what the aspiring student should prepare themselves with including knowing the 26 American rudiments, chart reading, styles, and more. He then details what the audition process is like. We also spend a good amount of time discussing the acceptance process and the different types of scholarships and financial aid that is available. We then talk about the many different degree paths that are available including the new graduate programs. Applied lessons, the celebrity teachers, and how students can request them are then covered. John then talks about the required classes, labs, etc. Then we finish with a discussion about the state-of-the-art facilities (recording studios, practice rooms, performance venues, media center, and more). After the Berklee talk has concluded we conclude the show by running John through the maze that is the DWG Rorschach Test. For today’s show, I talk with Alan Dawson from the UK, he’s an artist blacksmith who has worked in art and architectural metalwork for over 35 years. Alan Dawson Associates have produced innovative, high quality, bespoke metalworks for all types of projects and he’s one of the founding members of BABA, the British Artist Blacksmith Association.  He’s also one of the core group of members that is organizing the Ypres 2016 International event in Belgium.  The event is a 100-year memorial commemorating all who have been affected by WW1, a 23 ft tall cenotaph surrounded by 2016 poppies and 25 panels depicting the trenches will be erected next to a German war cemetery in Belgium.  The 25 panels will be made onsite over a 6 day period by 25 Masters who will have a team of six blacksmiths each.  Alan has designed a panel in memory of a particular story from WW1 which is about the Jones brothers and he’s also made 40 poppies for the event.  We talk about the logistics it takes to pull off such a large event and about the panel competition review and winners. What We Talked About The event takes place in September 2016 to arrange the meeting of 300 to 400 blacksmiths and farriers from around the world. They will erect a 22-foot cenotaph surrounded by 2016 poppies and 25 panels to form a lasting memorial for all who were affected by WW1. There is a core group that is organizing this large international event, there are 8 in the group. The group also has help from country representatives, a group of blacksmiths in the UK and Hereford College students are also helping. The idea started in 2009 when a group of UK blacksmiths collaborated on a large sculpture called the “Pillar of Friendship” in Liverpool UK. Luc Vandacasteele, a Belgian smith, started thinking about doing another collaborative blacksmith event in Ypres, Belgium because of the importance of the Menin Gate, a memorial built in 1927 for soldiers that were never found. Luc brought the idea to the BABA Association to see if they would like to help with the organization of the event. Luc has done a tremendous amount of work in the way of organization of donated materials for the sculpture. He has coordinated the donation of services and materials for local businesses. The companies that have donated their services and materials are: A German steel supplier donated the material for the cenotaph. The raw material for the cenotaph alone costs just over 10,000 euros, its 23 ft tall, 6 ft wide, 4 inches thick and 12.5 tons. A Belgian engineering company donated their cutting services to plasma cut the positive and negative part of the poppy in the cenotaph. Another Belgian company donated their services to making the steel frame that will mount the cenotaph. A Belgian concrete company has donated the pre-cast concrete mound that will hold the 2016 poppies. Transportation of materials, structural engineering calculations, and many other services have been done free of charge. The core group is still working on raising the remaining money needed, about 80,000 pounds to cover the setup of the market with tents, forges, anvils, swage blocks, etc all in one day, also to reimburse the 25 Masters will incur for traveling to the event. A crowd funding campaign has been started to raise the funds, you can see and donate here, https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ypres-2016-blacksmith-farrier-cenotaph#/ This blacksmith event is one of many in the town of Ypres happening for the centennial commemoration of the great war. Luc applied to the Ypres mayor years ago to have access to the center market for a week long blacksmith event. For the last 90 years, every night at 8 o’clock the local fire brigade provides buglers who play the last post at Menin Gate. The building is always full to capacity and for those who have applied ahead of time, there is a chance to lay a wreath in memory of a loved one. The core group has arranged for a blacksmith ceremony at Menin Gate one of the nights, it will include laying a wreath of poppies forged from children around the world. Alan recommends for us to read about the Jones Brothers, the article is on the Ypres 2016 website, http://www.ypres2016.com/category/the-great-war-stories/. A sample panel has been forged in honor of the Jones boys. The 25 panels that will surround the cenotaph will have interpretive information about each design so the half a million visitors per year can connect to WW1 and the memorial. 10 masters were invited and have accepted to design and make a panel each. 16 more blacksmiths have been chosen through a competition that was held internationally. Seven members of the core group reviewed 104 designs that were submitted for the competition. The 25 Masters that have been chosen are: SHONA JOHNSON - SCOTLAND KHEIR AKER - ISREAL TAKAYOSHI KOMINE - JAPAN PETER DE BEUS - BELGUIM WILL MAGUIRE - AUSTRALIA FRANSISCO GAZITUA - CHILI ACHIM KUHN - GERMANY VLADAMIR SOKHONEVICH - RUSSIA JEFFRY FUNK – AMERICA SANDRA DUNN - CANADA STEVEN LAURIJS – NETHERLANDS JIM WHITSON - SCOTLAND EGOR BAVYKIN - RUSSIA ONDREJ GELA – CZECHLOSLOVAKIA AMBROSE BURNE – UNITED KINGDOM IVAN KADOCHNIKOV - RUSSIA ROBERTO GIORDANI - ITALY ALEXANDER SUSHNIKOV - RUSSIA GIOVANNI SARTORI - ITALY JAMES MAKELY - AMERICA BENJAMIN KJELLMAN-CHAPIN - NORWAY JACOB HAGGERTY – UNITED KINGDOM PATRICK PELGROMS - BELGIUM PHILIP VERCAMMEN - BELGIUM PAUL MIKULA – SOUTH AFRICA There is an opportunity to register as a delegate to have the opportunity to forge with the master’s teams. The registration sign up is on the website here, http://www.ypres2016.com/delegate-registration/ An exhibition of curated forged work will also be set up next to the event called “Transitions”. Delyth Done is in charge of curating and organizing the exhibition.  The exhibition will continue to tour around Europe after the Ypres event. Two great musicians here that were frequent musical partners on what was their last recorded appearance. It is also a fine way to celebrate the Birthday of pianist extraordinaire, Jaki Byard. Jaki would have been 93 today (June 15). Sadly he left us in 1999 the victim of a shooting. This great album also features the legendary Rahsaan Roland Kirk on a variety of horns, the tenor saxophone, the manzello (a straight alto saxophone), the clarinet and some small instruments. These two met when they were with Mingus in 1961 and formed a musical friendship. Two great surrealists of music. The album has Byard and Kirk backed by the great Richard Davis on bass and Alan Dawson on drums. The Jaki Byard Experience indeed! HAPPY BIRTHDAY Mr. Byard.

Pianist Jaki (John) Byard was a genius who played every instrument in the band more than well but we'll always remember him as a great piano player whose style covered the history of Jazz from stride and ragtime to the avant-guard and all the stops in between. Jaki was born in Worcester, MA on June 15,1922 and died in New York on February 11,1999. He was murdered and the case is still one of the NYPD's unsolved mysteries. Jaki recorded prolifically under his own name and as a sideman but he made some of his most significant statements as part of the volatile Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop. Byard composed and arranged as well and Mingus valued his association with Jaki. The Feature tonight was recorded about a year after a fabled tour of Europe with Mingus and he was about to return to the Workshop but he assembled this quartet for some engagements and they were recorded at a little club in West Peabody MA called "Lennie's on the Turnpike" The band was hot that night in April and with the great bassist George Tucker, drum master Alan Dawson and tenor and soprano saxophonist and flutist Joe Farrell, Jaki couldn't go wrong. Byard leads from the piano with cues and shouts to the guys and the music is loose, swinging and inspired and reaches some of the same creative intensity as a Mingus set. Jaki Byard "LIVE!" is an exciting experience....have a good time with this music.
