Episode 71: Harvey Mason Sr. You've heard Harvey Mason Sr., whether you realize it or not. From the iconic grooves of Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters to the GRAMMY-winning “Kiss From A Rose” by Seal, Harvey's drumming has shaped music history across genres, decades, and mediums — albums, film scores, and TV alike. He's not only a musical powerhouse, but a dear friend, and in this episode, we finally sat down to dig into his legendary run — especially his work with Herbie Hancock and the Head Hunters album. Harvey shares the story of how that band came together, the sessions behind Chameleon and Watermelon Man, and why he chose not to tour with them at the height of their success. We also dive into his solo career — how it started, how it evolved, and the surprising role Clive Davis played in making it all happen. Harvey opens up about his long-standing friendships and collaborations with Quincy Jones and Chick Corea, his approach to fatherhood (including raising his sons Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, and Max Mason, former VP of Quincy Jones Productions), and how he built a legacy both on and off the kit. Fun fact: Vic Firth was Harvey's teacher — and Harvey still receives royalties from the early days of Vic Firth drumsticks! We also get into his stunning new album Changing Partners: Trios 2, featuring the likes of Chick Corea, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, James Genus, Dave Grusin, Stanley Clarke. This conversation is a masterclass in musicianship, legacy, and love for the craft. Enjoy my sit-down with the incomparable Harvey Mason Sr. ‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. Après une décennie d'absence, Seal fait un retour remarqué sur la scène musicale avec son nouveau single "All I Know Is Now".

A remarkable amount of synthesizer and vocal genius this week as we tackle a song made and covered by pioneering artists who brought an uncommon level of sophistication to their work. Steppin' Out, originally by Joe Jackson, covered by Trevor Horn featuring Seal. Outro music is Kiss From A Rose, also by Seal, and also produced by Trevor Horn.

[Chorus] Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey Ooh, the more I get of you, stranger it feels, yeah And now that your rose is in bloom A light hits the gloom on the grey [Post-Chorus] Ba-ya-ya, ba-da-da-da-da-da, ba-ya-ya [Verse 2] There is so much a man can tell you So much he can say You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain, baby To me, you're like a growing addiction that I can't deny Won't you tell me, is that healthy, baby? [Pre-Chorus repeats] [Chorus repeats] [Bridge] I've been kissed by a rose on the grey I, I've been kissed by a rose on the grey I've (And if I should fall, will it all go away?) been kissed by a rose on the grey I, I've been kissed by a rose on the grey [Verse 2 repeats] [Pre-Chorus repeats] [Chorus repeats] [Post-Chorus] Ba-ya-ya, ba-da-da-da-da-da, ba-ya-ya [Outro] Now that your rose is in bloom A light hits the gloom on the grey Jump to section (00:48) Briefest ever celebrity introduction (00:55) Song details, writer/lyricist, key dates (01:55) Embarrassed. Seal is a multi-Grammy-winning singer and songwriter from England. His song “Kiss from a Rose” was first released in 1994, on his second album. It was a huge hit, thanks in part to being featured in the movie Batman Forever. It landed on the top ten charts in multiple countries, and eventually went quadruple platinum in the US. At the 1996 Grammys, it won Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. But "Kiss from a Rose" becoming a hit was not a foregone conclusion. Seal almost didn't record it. And when it was first released, it didn't make much of a splash. But for this episode, the 250th episode of Song Exploder, Seal and his longtime collaborator, producer Trevor Horn, told me the story of what it took to bring "Kiss from a Rose" to life. “Kiss From a Rose” is one of the most unusual number one hits of all time. Seal's song can't decide if it's in minor or major, it uses an old-fashioned waltz rhythm, and its lush orchestration and elaborate vocal harmonies support mysterious lyrics about a “greying tower alone on the sea.” Seal himself wasn't sure about the song, and needed some convincing to include the composition on his 1994 album SEAL II. But once director Joel Schumacher decided to use the track for the end credits of the film Batman Forever, the song went global and has remained a cultural phenomenon ever since. Ahead of his upcoming 30th anniversary tour for the albums SEAL I and SEAL II, we speak with the singer and songwriter about the enduring appeal of “Kiss From A Rose.” Learn more about your ad choices. It's a double Roswell, New Mexico week! We talk Kyle/Isabel fallout, clu-velations and the moment late in the second episode that delighted Ryan the most.
Which is the most romantic of the Batman films? Whose takes aren't too hot, aren't too cold, but are just right? And what's the new behind the scenes goss in the trades? We dish about these questions and more as we watch Season 6, Episode 16 of Family Matters.Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. And the best way to figure out how that happened - obviously - is to watch the last episode first and make our way backwards through nearly ten years of television.Join our countdown to number one (and our slow descent into madness) in all the places you expect internet people to be:Website: jumpingtheshuttle.spaceEmail: jumpingtheshuttle@gmail.comInstagram: @JumpingTheShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577Twitter: @JumpingShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577TikTok: @JumpingTheShuttle / @dak577Brought to you by Smooth My Balls
Seth and Marc wade through the mess of "mystery" lyrics that seem pretty obvious with Seal's's's Kiss From A Rose. How can a song so good also be so dumb? Get deep into the YA poetry of the song that almost got scrapped.
Nick pulled together a list of music news articles detailing the various types of responses artists, and the companies that represent them, have had to the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. It's not heavy on discussion, nor is it a topic we usually discuss, but Nick felt like it was too important not to acknowledge...even for a music podcast.Song: Tigran Hamasyan- “De-Dah”Greg has uncovered 3 undiscussed DJ Cummerbund gems and that means it's time for “Bangers & Mashups” Round 5! We listen to three increasingly complicated mashups that Greg (we all) believe are genuinely impressive works of art. Anyone that believes “Black Hole Sun” & “Kiss From A Rose” fit together is an interesting character to follow!Songs:DJ Cumberbund - “It's Not Unusual Dammit”DJ Cumberbund - “Get Away”DJ Cumberbund - “Kiss From A Sun”Jay was saddened to read that the Ernest Tubb Record Shop has been sold, along with the building that it's occupied since 1951. First opened in 1947 by Ernest Tubb, it helped spread country music by offering a catalog version mailed for record collectors across the country. Ultimately the new ownership, which took over in 2020, couldn't find a way to keep the store afloat while sitting in a greatly appreciated building on Music Row in Nashville. We discuss where things stands and why this store is such an important piece of American music history.Song: David Bromberg - “Sharon”
The 1995 motion picture Batman Forever marked the 3rd entry in the first cinematic universe of the titular DC Comics superhero. While previous entries had been directed by Tim Burton, Forever found Burton in a producing role instead, with directorial duties falling to Joel Schumacher. In contrast to the dark and macabre direction Burton took the film series, Schumacher found inspiration in the camp 1960s Batman TV show, to mixed critical reviews, but major commercial success. The film would go down as a blemish on the Batman franchise among fans, who along with its ill-fated sequel Batman & Robin did not appreciate the more light-hearted takes on the caped crusader. Nowadays it's best remembered as a low point for the comic book franchise, but also for its unassuming soundtrack, which just so happened to contain two of the most enduring pop songs of the 1990s: "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" by U2, and "Kiss From A Rose" by Seal. For two songs iconic to the decade to be connected to an otherwise mediocre soundtrack for an objectively bad superhero movie is a novelty in and of itself. That's why we're digging into this OST anomaly on a new episode of Jukebox Zeroes. Joining Lilz and Pat is streamer and author Danesha Artis, as the trio are swallowed up into 90s oblivion, and a never-ending chasm filled with Nick Cave saying "Daddy-O" way too much.#WeAreNormalNowLocal Music Feature: Collapser - "A Ghost & The Sea"

In this week's episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Joel Shumacher's bold, colorful, and often-misunderstood superhero movie, Batman Forever! How long do we spend quoting Jim Carrey's lines? Is an impeccable fashion sense the only redeeming quality of Tommy Lee Jones's Two-Face? Also, Alex, Tim, and Matt broke into the movie industry with the independent zombie horror movie, People Who Eat People. However, much like all of Alex's movies, it seems to be impossible to find. That is, until a fan of the podcast found it streaming online. What did they have to say about the gang's mysterious first movie? Listen now to find out!The AIPT Movies podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more!
