On June 15, 1920 a white mob killed three young Black men accused of the alleged rape of a white woman. At a Minnesota Humanities Center event on Monday, speakers reflected on the legacy of lynching and racial violence in Minnesota.--Feven Gerezgiher reports: June 15 marks the anniversary of the 1920 Duluth lynching, when a white mob killed three young Black men accused of the alleged rape of a white woman. At a Minnesota Humanities Center event on Monday, law professor John Bessler said racially motivated killings are not uncommon in Minnesota history. In the 19th century, both state sanctioned executions and lynchings occurred in Minnesota with executions fueled by this desire for vengeance or revenge and lynchings fueled by societal outrage at those responsible or thought to be responsible for heinous crimes.Bessler referred to examples like the 1862 mass hanging outside Mankato of 38 Dakota men charged with war crimes, the largest mass execution in U.S. history. In addition to the public lynching of three men, a fourth - Max Mason - was convicted of the rape, despite there being no supporting evidence. He served five years in prison after which he was released on the condition that he leave the state. He died in Memphis in 1942. Last June, 100 years later, lawyers Jerry Blackwell and Corey Gordon won Mason a posthumous pardon. The pardon came just weeks after the murder of George Floyd. Blackwell said the pardon is only a small steppingstone on the path to racial justice. The fact that the majority of posthumous pardons have gone to African-Americans underscores the importance of the posthumous pardon as a vehicle for shining light on the racial injustices of the past and also helping the nation itself as a whole with curing some of the problems we have with social and moral amnesia. // And we can't address or fix that which we don't acknowledge even exists. The pardon was the first of its kind in Minnesota.

Georgia Fort reports: The home of Washington County Attorney Pete Orput has been the site of multiple protests since he was selected to prosecute the Daunte Wright case. Activists gathered in the street, chanting “bring murder charges” and “do the right thing.”Orput was given the case after the Hennepin County attorney said he had a conflict of interest. Although Orput has charged former Brooklyn Center officer Kim Potter with Second degree manslaughter, community leaders say it's not enough. During one protest at Orput's home he came outside to confront protestors, asking civil rights attorney Nekima Levy Armstrong if she wanted to try the case instead. Armstrong led similar actions outside of Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman's home last year after George Floyd was killed. The technique was successful in getting some of the protestors' demands met. “Gone are the days when people like Pete Orput can rest comfortably,” said Armstrong, “because he doesn't know when we are going to pop up in front of his doorstep.”Armstrong is calling for Orput to retire and for Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison to reassign the case to Jerry Blackwell. On Sunday dozens gathered for a third demonstration at Pete Orput's home, including several families who lost a loved one to police. This time the protest took the form of a church service, complete with gospel music and prayer. “I pray that God touches Pete's heart. I pray that God delivers him from hard-heartedness, from thinking that he is in control when he needs to understand that God is in control,” said Armstrong.Although Orput did not come outside, his neighbors did, using racial slurs and other derogatory language. The Minnesota Department of Corrections has identified one of Orput's neighbors as its employee - who is currently under investigation.

The trail of the century (including OJ, George Zimmerman, Rodney King, Mike Brown, Kayne Divorce, Trump Impeachment, etc) is finally underway. Uncle Derek is fighting for his freedom with a crack team of one slightly-overweight and below-average-height lawyer, who allegedly goes by the name of Eric Nelson, and his super hot assistant. The prosecution is a goliath of super stars, put together by young Blaque playboy-millionaire, Benjamin Crump, and his hype man, Jerry Blackwell. After his eventful trip to Cup Foods, George Floyd was unfortunately in an altercation with MPD, accused of passing a fake 20 dollar bill. What came next was the world famous video that shocked the civilized world and catastrophically reamed the rift between black and white America. Fast forward to 2021: the non-sequestered jury is listening to news about a civil suit settled with the state, and George Floyd's family for 24-million USD, unruly witnesses are being dressed down by the judge, and we are following blow-for-blow haymakers from prosecution and defense as they try to get to the bottom of the questions we are all LITERALLY dying to know the answer to. Deliberation is coming. We don't know when. We don't where. But, judgement, and maybe... just maybe... justice... is coming. Like I said, GET YOUR ODYSEE ACCOUNT. A professional fighter felt scared. An off-duty firefighter felt desperate. A high school student felt threatened. And a 9-year-old girl felt sad and kind of mad.Feelings of horror and fear were recalled in a Minneapolis court Tuesday as a series of bystanders testified about what it was like to witness George Floyd slowly die under the knee of former police officer Derek Chauvin last May.Six bystanders testified on the second day of Chauvin's criminal trial: a 9-year-old girl, three high school students, a mixed martial arts fighter and a Minneapolis firefighter. All arrived at the scene hoping to buy snacks from a corner store or looking to get fresh air -- only to witness a man's last breaths."I was sad and kind of mad," the 9-year-old testified. "Because it felt like he was stopping his breathing, and it was kind of like hurting him."The MMA fighter, Donald Wynn Williams II, testified that he was so disturbed by what he saw that he called 911 to report it. "I called the police on the police," he said. "I believed I witnessed a murder."Minneapolis firefighter and certified EMT Genevieve Hansen, who was out for a walk on her day off, testified she wanted to render aid to Floyd and repeatedly asked police to check for a pulse. They refused."I tried calm reasoning, I tried to be assertive, I pled and was desperate," she testified. "I was desperate to give help."She, too, called 911 afterward to report what police had done. Her call was the third such report; In addition to Williams, a Minneapolis 911 dispatcher who saw the arrest on a live video feed testified Monday that she alerted a police sergeant. The bystanders' harrowing testimony furthered the prosecution's opening pitch to jurors, which focused on video of the 9 minutes and 29 seconds that Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck."You can believe your eyes that it's a homicide," prosecuting attorney Jerry Blackwell said Monday. "You can believe your eyes."Defense attorney Eric Nelson argued that the case was more complicated than just that video. He said Chauvin was following his police use of force training and argued Floyd's cause of death was a combination of drug use and preexisting health issues. He also said that the bystanders morphed into a threatening crowd, which distracted the officers. In contentious cross-examinations Tuesday of Williams and Hansen, he tried to get them to admit they and the crowd were angry.Chauvin, 45, has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. His trial comes 10 months after Floyd's death sparked a summer of protest, unrest and a societal reckoning with America's past and present of anti-Black racism and aggressive policing.Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, attendance is strictly limited inside the courtroom. The trial is being broadcast live in its entirety, giving the public a rare peek into the most important case of the Black Lives Matter era.Off-duty firefighter was 'totally distressed'Hansen, the off-duty firefighter, testified while wearing her work uniform on Tuesday. She said she became concerned for Floyd's health last May when she arrived to the scene while out for a walk. "He wasn't moving and he was cuffed, and three grown men putting all their weight on somebody is too much," she said. She identified herself as a Minneapolis firefighter and moved to help, but former officer Tou Thao refused her access to treat Floyd. His refusal made her "totally distressed," frustrated and feeling helpless, she testified. She ultimately filmed part of Floyd's arrest on her phone and later called 911 to report it."When things calmed down, I realized I wanted them to know what was going on. I wanted to basically report it," she said.On cross-examination, she repeatedly took issue with Nelson's questioning and at one point responded to a question with snark. "I don't know if you've ever seen someone die in front of you, but it's very upsetting," sh...
A 9 year old who witnessed the death of George Floyd testified in court Tuesday against Derek Chauvin. In an exclusive interview with the Racial Reckoning project, the girl - who's name is Judea - said she had to be brave in court like she was brave the day she saw George Floyd die.“I met George Floyd's daughter today,” Judea told reporter Georgia Fort. “She was pretty nice. Her mom kept crying, saying ‘thank you, thank you.'”During Judea's testimony the Judge decided not to transmit video of her or any of the other three underage witnesses who took the stand Tuesday. Prosecuting attorney Jerry Blackwell asked Judea how seeing Chauvin with his knee on George Floyd's neck made her feel. “I was sad and kind of mad,” said Judea on the witness stand, “‘cuz it feels like it was stopping his breathing and kind of hurting him.” Judea's cousin Darnella Frazier also testified in court. Frazier was 17 when she filmed the now viral video of Derek Chauvin kneeling on George Floyd's neck.“It's been nights I've stayed up apologizing and apologizing to George Floyd for not doing more and not physically interacting and not saving his life, but it's not what I should have done - it's what HE should have done,” Frazier said, indicating to Derek Chauvin. While Frazier didn't know Floyd, she says it could have been her father or her brother under Chauvin's knee. Georgia Fort reporting for the Racial Reckoning project.
