Before we dove into their use of an AI medical scribe, I had to take a minute to talk about their Student Health Center's experience using eClinicalWorks as their EHR and how they leveraged it to address some of the unique challenges and opportunities that student health faces.  Hussain made a compelling case for the value that eClinicalWorks offered their college health organization. Also, I was happy that a student health center was embracing an AI medical scribe like Sunoh since student health can often be slow adopters of the latest technology.  That's why I was especially curious to learn why and how Hussain and his team decided to roll out Sunoh in their organization.  Plus, he shares with us his staff's inital reaction to Sunoh. How Medical Scribes Help Drive Excellent Patient Experiences

Healthcare Experience Matters

In this week's edition of the Healthcare Experience Matters Podcast, we take an in-depth look at some of the (often overlooked) benefits of medical scribes and their positive impact on the patient experience. We are excited to welcome Dr. Christine Meyer, an internal medicine physician, back to our program for today's episode. This is the second appearance of Dr. Meyer on our weekly podcast series. In addition to her being a passionate advocate for driving excellent patient experiences, she is the founder of Christine Meyer, MD, and Associates (CMMD), a practice with over 20 providers, 20,000 patients, and two buildings in the Philadelphia metro region. As mentioned, in her previous podcast interview episode with us entitled, Driving Excellent Patient Experiences by Improving the Little Things, she attributes the success of CMMD to the emphasis her team has placed on ensuring a top-notch patient experience for everyone who walks in the door. The growth of CMMD is not because of traditional advertising or marketing campaigns, but due to the positive word-of-mouth generated by patients at her clinic. Medical Scribes in Primary Care *Research on the use of medical scribes in the primary care setting has linked medical scribes to heightened productivity and efficiency, elevated healthcare provider satisfaction, and, in numerous instances, increased levels of patient satisfaction. This sentiment is corroborated by the stories told by Dr. Meyer in today's podcast. She joined our show to shed light on the often-underestimated advantages of incorporating medical scribes into the clinical setting. Medical scribes at CMMD not only document patient visits in real-time but also serve as an extension of the clinician, allowing Dr. Meyer to maintain eye contact and enhance the overall patient-provider interaction in general. Medical Scribe Logistics The discussion touches on the logistical aspects of hiring medical scribes, revealing that CMMD often hires pre-med or medical students seeking valuable experience during a gap year. Dr. Meyer emphasizes the dual benefits of this arrangement as patients receive more personalized care and detailed post-visit summaries, while clinicians experience a significant reduction in workload and stress. The conversation extends to the unique relationships formed between patients and scribes, where patients of CMMD often reach out to scribes for clarification on post-visit instructions. Dr. Meyer acknowledges the costliness of implementing such a system but highlights its impact on both patient satisfaction and clinician efficiency. As the discussion unfolds, Dr. Meyer addresses the misconception that medical scribes must have a traditional medical or patient care background, revealing that individuals with diverse healthcare-related degrees, including healthcare business, can excel in the role. This insightful conversation explores the multifaceted benefits of medical scribes, showcasing how they elevate the patient's experience while gaining invaluable patient care knowledge inside the clinic. For any medical student or aspiring medical trainees in the eastern Pennsylvania region who may be interested, Dr. Meyer invites you to reach out and join her expanding team. You can send her an email at Christine@ChristineMeyerMD.com to learn more! Sources Ziemann M, Erikson C, Krips M. The Use of Medical Scribes in Primary Care Settings: A Literature Synthesis. Ambience Healthcare just came out of stealth mode with what they describe as fully automated AI medical scribes. I hopped on camera with Mike Ng, Co-Founder & CEO, and Nikhil Buduma, Co-Founder & Chief Scientist at Ambience Healthcare to learn more about how they're approaching this EHR documentation burden problem. In the video interview they share about Ambience Healthcare and how their solution fits between things like Human Scribes, Ambient Clinical Voice, and EHR templates. They also share what the workflow looks like for a clinician using their product and how much of the backend technology is done by humans versus technology (Spoiler Alert: It's all Technology done in real time). We also talk about whether a clinician has to change the way they talk in the exam room for this solution to work and how they approach building trust with clinicians in the accuracy of the notes that are generated. It's still early in the life of Ambience Healthcare since they just came out of stealth mode, but I think many will be interested to check out a demo and see if it can solve some of the issues I identify above. Smoldering below the surface is burnout, and it’s taking a toll on physicians. With increasingly high rates of reported physician suicides and an alarming decline in the volume of medical school applications, this situation could be the nation’s next healthcare crisis. The good news: A study published in April’s World Journal of Urology reported that using scribes in a urology practice significantly increased physician efficiency, work satisfaction, and revenue. Enter Talk Ten Tuesdays special guest Dr. Suzette Sutherland, associate professor in the department of urology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Sutherland reported on her facility’s training program and how using scribes is improving efficiency but also improving physician-patient relationships, patient satisfaction, and provider satisfaction, leading to less physician burnout. Other segments to be featured on the broadcast include: Tuesday Focus - Risk Adjustment: We had two reports on this trending topic: Sheri Poe Bernard, author of the American Medical Association 2018 publication “Risk Adjustment Documentation and Coding,” joined the broadcast to discuss her new book. And also reporting on the Tuesday Focus on risk adjustment was Marie A. Morin, director at Alvarez and Marsal Healthcare Industry Group LLC. Marie reported on risk adjustment payment methodologies. Talk Ten Tuesdays News Desk: Larry Field, DO, anchored the Talk Ten Tuesdays News Desk and presented the very latest healthcare news. Dr. Field is the treasurer of the American College of Physician Advisors. Coding Report: Nationally recognized coding and documentation authority Terry Fletcher will continued her report on errors she is uncovering in a review of more than thousands of records. Terry shared her findings in the third of a four-part series on auditing issues in physician documentation she is reporting exclusively for ICD10monitor.
