Richard Grant has lived in Arizona for more than twenty years, and his latest book — A Race to the Bottom of Crazy — is a fascinating blend of memoir, history, local issues and encounters with strange characters. It's a place where social guardrails are weak, and outlandish behaviour is the order of the day. Arizona doesn't just reflect national trends, it exaggerates them. Is it a bellwether for the world to come? We spoke about the lure of the desert, Arizona's southern border, water shortages, and the world's biggest machine gun shoot.
British travel writer Richard Grant discusses the sporting sense of humor he's observed (and appreciated) behind the distinctly American talent for over-the-top bragging. Then tour guides from Madrid let us in on their favorite places to take visitors in the Spanish capital. And we ponder our place in the planet's history with author Robert Macfarlane, who shares insights gained from a decade of investigating, from a perspective of geologic time, humanity's relationship with our landscape. When we are in deep grief, we can anticipate some of the horrible parts—the sleeplessness, the denial, the loneliness. But what about the moments of surprising lightness and joy? Moments that don't erase the pain, but make it a bit more bearable. Academy Award-nominated actor Richard E. Grant practices finding these pockets of happiness while grieving his beloved wife. In this conversation, Kate and Richard talk about: the gritty side of caregiving how to support people in grief (even when it makes you uncomfortable) the importance of knowing and being known Watch clips from this conversation, read the full transcript, and access discussion questions by clicking here. Tour guides from Lisbon paint audio pictures of the vivid art that colors the streets of Portugal, then a journalist and former diplomat tells of how curiosity led him to meet with healers in the jungles of Nicaragua and Belize. And travel writer Richard Grant explains how a particularly bitter Yukon winter in Dawson City inspired Jack London to write one of his most famous tales of the North. Plus, Rick's in-house art expert gives us a close-up appreciation of Leonardo's Mona Lisa. A nonfiction deep dive into one of America's most intriguing cities is the book I am bringing to you today. That is The Deepest South of All: True Stories from Natchez, Missisippi by Richard Grant.
Film writer, editor, and podcaster Jake Tropila joins from Los Angeles to discuss the Coen Brothers' 1998 comedy 'The Big Lebowski', starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Though middlingly received both critically and commercially upon release, the film has gone on to become a genuine cult classic, launching a cottage industry of fan screenings, conventions, and even a religion. We discuss the film's patchwork of influences, including larger-than-life characters withing the Coens' orbit and the works of author Raymond Chandler, especially as adapted by Robert Altman for his 1973 film 'The Long Goodbye'. Then we discuss the film's unrivaled cast, including a superb John Goodman, who turns in an awards-caliber performance as the gun-toting, militant bowling enthusiast Walter Sobchak. Finally, we discuss the film's windy, inarticulable plot, and the way that its mechanics might conceal a deeper level of criticism about the sociopolitical landscape of America on the eve of The End of History. Becoming Rooted Ephesians: Becoming Who You Are November 6, 2022 If you've been around here very long, you know that I'm a sunshine and blue skies kind of guy. Summer is my favorite time of year. I am thankful that, for the most part, our typical rainy fall weather didn't kick in until the end of October this year. Which made for a beautiful fall. We were treated to a gorgeous display of autumn glory as the leaves turned colors, creating a tapestry of vibrant red, yellow, and orange throughout our city. The changes we see in the trees as the seasons turn are pretty spectacular. But what is even more amazing is what is going on beneath the surface, where we can't see! The root systems of trees are really just beginning to be understood by scientists. An online article published in Smithsonian Magazine by journalist Richard Grant outlines new discoveries about the incredible things that take place within the “wood-wide-web” beneath the forest floor, as groves of trees “communicate” with one another; sharing water and nutrients, sending distress signals about drought, disease, or insect attacks, and how other trees alter their behavior when they receive these messages. In the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, giant sequoia trees grow. They are on average 200-300 ft tall, have a diameter of 25 ft, and can live up to 3,000 years! Amazingly, the root systems of sequoia trees are not that deep, but they are intricately intertwined. Sequoias grow close to each other, and the networked effect of their matted roots provides incredible strength and stability to the Sequoias. It is a powerful reminder of the strength of the community. I'm Chris Voigt, Lead Pastor at Dayspring Fellowship in Keizer, Oregon. We are in the middle of our series, Ephesians: Becoming Who You Are. This week we'll be taking a look at what it means for us as followers of Jesus to be deeply rooted in our faith. Strong, healthy roots enable us to thrive as we grow in relationship with Christ, as a community of believers, and as the body of Christ.

How do you break barriers and defy the odds when it feels like the world is trying to stop you from achieving your desires? When people get a hold of the fact that you're trying to pursue medicine, most of them usually tell you not to. From reasons about spending your whole life in school to then not being able to do anything else aside from what the practice demands you to – there's a long list of limiting beliefs that you should not allow to get into you. Yes, it will be hard, but it's worth every drop of the tears you've cried. If I can be an orthopedic surgeon with the struggles I've had, then you, as well, can reach great heights! Listen to this episode as I share with Dr. Pierre how I was able to reach my own definition of success in life. “If you don't get in the first time, it's not the end of the world. If you don't pass the board exam or don't get the MCAT or SAT score that you want, it's not the end of the world. You might have to work harder in other areas. You might have to do research. You might have to do a little more shadowing, but it's still not the end of the world. There's many different ways to get in, but the main thing is you have to be persistent.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess Topics Covered: 00:00 – Dr. Burgess offers a moment to talk about the recent events he's lived by over the past week 01:43 – Then and Now: Why this episode is a bit different from the previous ones 04:07 – Ads (Go to www.zerogravityskin.com and use Dr. Derrick's code “DrDerrick30” to receive 30% off your purchase) 04:56 – Dr. Pierre welcomes Dr. Burgess to Medicine Mondays as they discuss why it seems not enough to just be a physician nowadays 07:23 – A little backgrounder: Stories on how Dr. Burgess lived his day-to-day years back that led him to become the doctor he is today 11:00 – A mirror for myself: Dr. Pierre shares why he loves hearing Dr. Burgess' story 13:15 – Mentorship is key: “If I had anything to do over again, I would ask more people for help.” 18:37 – A day in the life of the Sports Doctor: Practicing medicine both inside and outside the hospital 21:57 – Stepping out of the box: Going online and doing more than what's usually expected from a physician 24:40 – Sports Doctor/Podcaster: Dr. Burgess' reasons on why he started podcasting 29:10 – Check out Dr. Burgess' podcast – TimeOut With The SportsDr Podcast 29:59 – My dreams, my goals: Three years from now, what would Dr. Burgess' podcast look like? 34:08 – Close the wealth gap: Dr. Burgess explains why more people should learn about investing, especially those of the younger generation 37:08 – Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess Key Takeaways: “The backstory is always important because once you see a person who is at the level of success that you meet them at, you assume that they've been there, or that they just automatically elevated to that level and didn't go through the struggles, or didn't have failures in life.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess “Mentorship is key. I'm not sitting here as an orthopedic surgeon without mentors.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess “The answer is always no until you ask. And if you ask, it can still be no, but it could be yes. But if you don't ask, it's always going to be no.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess “It's knowing who needs that surgical procedure, knowing how to correctly diagnose somebody clinically is what separates the good from the great in orthopedics, because if you do a great surgery for their own indication, you're still not going to get a good result.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess PROMO CODE: DrDerrick30 for 30% Follow: ZeroGravitySkin and Dr. Berry Pierre Notes/Mentions: Dr. Nii Darko: https://drniidarko.com/ Dr. Richard Grant: https://www.linkedin.com/in/richard-e-grant-m-d-86392017/ Dr. Bonnie Simpson-Mason: http://www.drbonniemason.com/ Dr. Steven Bradley: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stevenbradleymd/ TimeOut With The SportsDr Podcast: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Connect with Dr. Berry Pierre: Website: https://www.drberrypierre.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drberrypierre/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drberrypierre YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/drberrypierretv Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess: Website: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drderrickthesportsdr/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeOut.SportsDr Email: thesportsdoctr@gmail.com
On this week's episode of the Parley in All Blue Podcast, Mark sits down with Richard Grant to discuss Natchez, Mississippi. Bestselling travel writer Richard Grant “sensitively probes the complex and troubled history of the oldest city on the Mississippi River.” Natchez, Mississippi, once had more millionaires per capita than anywhere else in America, and its wealth was built on slavery and cotton. Today it has the greatest concentration of antebellum mansions in the South, and a culture full of unexpected contradictions. Prominent white families dress up in hoopskirts and Confederate uniforms for ritual celebrations of the Old South, yet Natchez is also progressive enough to elect a gay black man for mayor with 91% of the vote. Exit.45 by our own Auckland writer Ben Sanders. His hero is a guy named Marshall Grade, and this is a ride through the NY underworld. Living safely here in Takapuna Auckland, I'm never sure how he manages to get his US cities down so well and all the thugs who inhabit them but he's really good at it. When a former NYPD colleague is shot dead in front of him, private investigator Marshall Grade discovers there's far more to the killing than meets the eye. The Deepest South of All by Richard Grant – he's a travel writer and went to Natchez Mississippi to have a look at a town built on slavery and cotton, which it's still trying to atone for all these many years later, but evidence of its history is found everywhere and it's full of some of the most extraordinary characters you could wish to meet anywhere. Readers who loved Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which was a phenomenon many years ago, will love this. It's also run through with the saddest story of e genuine African Prince who was caught up in the slave trade and found himself captive in Natchez for most of his life. He deserves a book of his own.

The Catholic Nerds dive into the chaos of the "Motu Inapproprio", Pope Francis' new instruction on the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) and its possible effects. Pope Benedict XVI had given priests the option to celebrate the Latin Mass or Extraordinary Form (EF) of the Mass. Now, priests need their bishop's permission, even if it's an EF-hating bishop. Is Pope Francis attempting to foster unity by sowing division? Does that work? Then, to turn their minds to happier, more gentle territory, the C-Nerds delve into the [SPOILERS] multiverse of madness from awakened by Loki Season One. What's your favorite moment from Loki Season 1? We decide on our favorite Loki - is it Richard Grant's "Classic Loki", Croc Loki or "Croki", "President Loki", Loki Prime, or Sylvie Loki? We discuss Owen Wilson's Mobius and how time is described as a "Mobius strip" ... like Iron Man realized in Avengers: Endgame. Did you notice all the crazy Easter Eggs in the intro to Loki Episode 6? There's a zoom out like in the sci-fi movie Contact; black holes expanding and contracting cycle (even though Stephen Hawking's Big Crunch theory is widely panned now); Neil Armstrong, Greta Thurnberg (why??), Maya Angelou, and a random spaceship? Is it the X-Men's ship or the Fantastic Four's? And then that lovely quote from Vision: “What is grief, if not love persevering?” To the comics! The C-Nerds compare Renslayer and He Who Remains to their comic equivalents, Ravonna Renslayer and Kang the Conqueror, respectively. Episode 6 shows us that Judge Renslayer was originally the principal of FDR high school in Ohio where her diploma reads “Rebecca Tourminet”, possibly a reference to her comic equivalent "Terminatrix". In the comics, Ravonna Renslayer was the daughter of King Carelius, a ruler in the 40th century Earth. The kingdom of Carelius was the last bastion of civilization unconquered by Kang the Conqueror in that time period. Also, where does Renslayer go when she leaves Mobius? Who is He Who Remains? Is he Kang the Conqueror? How about that apple He Who Remains was eating? Is this a reference to Genesis and Eden? Is He Who Remains the serpent or the dragon, tempting the new Adam and Eve of Time, Loki and Sylvie? Here's more on the serpent of Eden actually being a dragon. And what about the question of Free Will? The Catholic Nerds dive into all these theological nuggets! Do you want to bedeck yourself in your #1 galactic source for quality Catholic nerdery? Of course, you do! And now you can ... LINK Like the Catholic Nerds on Facebook Check out our Patreon page for exclusive nerdiness. Tweet us @NerdsCatholic. The new education budget closes the funding gap for the MAEP. We hear from the Senate Education Committee Chair. And, how the pandemic is causing a drop in routine vaccinations for school-aged children. Then, in our Book Club, stories from Natchez in Richard Grant's latest book, "The Deepest South of All" Plus, the arrival of spring usually brings visitors to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We examine how the region fared last vacation season as the new one approaches. Segment 1:"It's been a good year for education". Those sentiments were shared this week by chairs of both the House and Senate Education committees as lawmakers passed the state's K-12 education budget. The bill includes variety of spending provisions including a teacher pay raise, increased funds for classrooms, and math coaches in high need areas. Senator Dennis Debar chairs the Senate Ed Committee. He tells our Ashley Norwood the budget increased year-over-year, and closed the funding gap for the Mississippi Adequate Education Program.Segment 2:Pediatricians in Mississippi are encouraging parents to bring children in for checkups and vaccinations for preventable diseases. Thousands of children in Mississippi are behind on their vaccinations according to Dr. Anita Henderson with the Mississippi Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She tells our Kobee Vance the pandemic has played a role in the decline, but ensures it's safe to bring kids back to the doctor's office.Segment 3:Richard Grant was born in Malaysia, lived in Kuwait as a boy and moved to London. Then he moved to New York and from there to Mississippi. The travel writer lived in the tiny town of Pluto and wrote the acclaimed book, "Dispatches from Pluto." Now, the city of Natchez is Grant's focus in his new book, The Deepest South of All: True Stories from Natchez, Mississippi - in this week's Book Club with Karen Brown.Segment 4:While it may be unseasonably cool this April morning, the spring month usually marks the beginning of a bustling tourism season for the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Casinos in the region temporarily shut down this time last year, and the mitigation efforts against the coronavirus led to a decline in hotel occupancy. But Milton Segarra, CEO of Coastal Mississippi says, despite the obstacles, the region fared better than other parts of the nation during the pandemic. He tells our Karen Brown, the coast is ready to welcome visitors. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
NewsMcGuireWoods is pleased to announce that the pre-eminent gathering for independent sponsors and capital providers returns to Dallas this October. Don't miss the opportunity to gain knowledge and insights during our panel discussions, including results from our largest proprietary deal points study to date, and our much-anticipated networking events. Connect one-on-one in our efficient speed-dating segment, which produced more than thousands of meetings during our 2019 conference. For information, please visit https://www.independentsponsorconference.com/ (here). Episode SummaryAs an independent sponsor, there are a lot of variables that come into play. Which businesses are worth acquiring and working with? What's the best strategy to go about that? And is it worth the risk? On this episode of Deal by Deal (yes, we've changed the name!), Greg Hawver and Richard Grant, Partners at McGuireWoods, tease out the lessons from investor success stories. As Columbia River Partners' Poneet Goel puts it, “cost structure perspective, as well as an operational efficiency perspective” are key. Understanding what is needed for growth, be it new technology or carving out a specific division of the company, can be the difference between failure and rapid success. It can also be the difference between being a stalking horse or just not being able to raise the capital needed. Whether you go to traditional independent sponsor backers or your network of investors, there is always a new tactic to learn, and honesty about the good and the bad will strengthen your position in the end. “I think maybe there's an important lesson there,” Richard says, “which is the importance of going out to the investment community … in any deal and being candid and frank about risk versus opportunity, upside, downside, where all the skeletons are.” No one will succeed with skeletons in the closet and being frank about the risks versus the upsides is discussed in a candid manner, much like how it should be discussed with clients and investors themselves. The second half of the episode features Brad Harrop of Capstone Headwaters and McGuireWoods' Brian Coughlin discussing debt finance. Be it negotiating M&A and upstream equity documents or working on the credit agreement, understanding this part of the deal process is critical to overall investment knowledge. Also discussed is the effect COVID-19 has had on the market. “[T]he terms that we might've expected at maybe a slightly lower leverage or slightly higher EBITDA are now starting to show up where they're slightly higher leverage or they're slightly lower EBITDA,” Brian explains. Tune in to this episode of Deal by Deal to hear the intrepid and unique ways independent sponsors are taking the investing world by storm. Tonight’s movie is a hidden gem among horror movie rentals! WARLOCK 1989.We make some jokes about an accident during last week’s live stream before discussing this week’s Home Video Headlines:Godzilla Versus King, our issues with Godzilla being the villain againA non-spoiler mini-review of PG: Psycho GoremanAlien Nation reboot potentially becoming a Disney Plus mini-series Whether or not we think you should be able to buy and sell video on demand codesTonight’s movie is a hidden gem among horror movie rentals. I think people know of it, but are still questioning whether or not to watch it. This movie has a great director, great actors, and a great premise. In 17th-century New England, witch hunter Giles Redferne (Richard E. Grant) captures an evil warlock (Julian Sands), but the conjurer eludes death with supernatural help. Flung into the future, the warlock winds up in the 1980s and plans to bring about the end of the world. Redferne follows the enchanter into the modern era and continues his mission, but runs into trouble in such unfamiliar surroundings. With the help of a young woman (Lori Singer), can Redferne finally defeat the warlock?Directed by Steve Miner. He did Friday the 13th Part 2, Part 3, House, Forever Young, My Father The Hero, Halloween H20, and Lake Placid. He looked at the script and recognized the main characters being the warlock and the witch hunter were fresh off the boat from England in colonial America, so he had the good sense to get some amazing British actors.Julian Sands sat on the script for a while assuming it was run of the mill slasher material, and then he understood there was a dark sense of humor running through the tone of the story.Richard Grant supposedly comes in for the Warlock part and then gets the chance to play the hero named Giles Redferne.Highlights from our first impressions include: “Julian Sands steals the show.” “Not as good as I remember.”“This movie is alive. Scott McNulty returns to the pod to discuss Richard Grant's new book, 'The Deepest South of All: True Stories from Natchez, Mississippi.' The book explores the history of the city, which was home to the largest slave market in Mississippi, and present day Natchez, which is seemingly suspended in antebellum fantasy. Scott and Sid discuss the sad and disrespectful "monument" at The Forks of the Road, and what could possibly cause a gay couple to long for Confederate life. This book is full of, ummmmmmm, characters?
AN INHERITANCE TRIGGERS A DEADLY BATTLE BETWEEN COUSINS Greed, lust for power, and ruthless ambition are what drive Richard Grant. All he needs is the Big G to consolidate his hold on the territory. Only his cousin Harry Grant, the legitimate heir, stands in the way. When Harry guns down the hired killers sent on Richard's orders, a crooked sheriff and a bent judge make sure Harry ends up in prison. Life is tough for the young cowboy, but he survives, only to face, on his release from prison, more assassins sent to make sure he never returns home to claim his inheritance. Harry has no choice but to go gunning for his cousin. The showdown takes place at the Hot Spur saloon. Here we explore the ongoing repercussions of slavery, observed through the microcosm of Natchez, Mississippi, with Richard Grant, in his fifth book “The Deepest South of All.” Moving from England to Mississippi, Richard brings this distinct perspective and keen, compassionate eye to try to understand the “sleight of mind” that America still maintains about our greatest original sin. In Natchez, he found a town that both studiously maintains its Confederate “Gone with the Wind” mythology but also elected a gay black man for mayor with 91% of the vote. In its time, it was the site of both the second largest slave market in the U.S. and the most millionaires per capita; of course, those two are directly related. Richard never intended to be a writer; we talk at first about his path from England to becoming a New York Times best-selling author. Then we address the multi-layered, deeply human complexities that enable both slavery and collective forgetfulness, and its ramifications for today. In this moment of Black Lives Matter and an America in perhaps our most disturbing identity crises since the Civil War, Richard’s insights couldn’t be more timely. Please see the Show Notes for links to Richard and his works, and feel free to comment.
Larry Morrisey visits with writer Richard Grant. Grant, known for "Dispatches from Pluto," his book on his time living in a remote community in the Delta, has just published "The Deepest South of All," a look at the city of Natchez and how its long history continues to impact contemporary life in the town. This broadcast is a favorite legacy show that we produced under our old name Travel’n On and before re-branding as WORLD FOOTPRINTS. World Footprints will travel along the award-winning journalistic trails of the CRAZY RIVER, explore prehistoric Spirit Stones and contemplate the end of the world in Maya 2012. First, award-winning travel writer Richard Grant will take us through East Africa and down the Nile River. Despite escaping death in Mexico’s lawless Sierra Madre, an adventure he describes in his adventure classic God’s Middle Finger, Richard’s curiosity and restlessness took him to Africa, where he set off on another adventure-- to find the source of the Nile River. In his newest book, CRAZY RIVER: Exploration and Folly in East Africa, Richard writes that he had trained and prepared for a physical adventure in the wilderness, but his biggest challenges were intellectual. Then, award-winning author Dianne Ebertt Beeaff shares her transcending book, SPIRIT STONES, a historic exploration that took nearly a decade to complete. Dianne explores the enduring lessons of Western Europe’s prehistoric monoliths, stone circles and burial chambers. Finally, Joshua Berman offers some insights into Maya culture and events surrounding the end of the Maya calendar on December 21, 2012 in his new guide book MAYA 2012. Joshua has been traveling, living, teaching, and leading trips in Central America since 1998. During his travels he's heard tales about “lost worlds” and Maya pyramids. A predominate story that he encountered is what the Maya have been anticipating—the end of the Long Count, a 5,125-year cycle of the Maya calendar, which will occur on December 21, 2012. Some believe that it will be a peaceful transition while others warn it will be apocalyptic.

When Ernest Hemingway somewhat presciently referred to Paris as a "moveable feast" ("wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you"), he captured the feelings of many long-term China expats rather concisely. So why exactly does everyone like to compare life here to Paris in the 1920s? And if life is so romantic here, where are the writers in our midst and what are they producing? This week on Sinica, Kaiser Kuo and David Moser are delighted to host the editors of While We're Here: China Stories from a Writers' Colony, a compilation of short stories, poems and more, lovingly assembled by Alec Ash and Tom Pellman of The Anthill. Join us to listen to some selections as well as unapologetic gossip about the writers in question. If you want to pick up the book, you can find it for your Kindle here on Amazon or drop by The Bookworm in Beijing for a physical copy. What's eating the American transportation infrastructure? Corrosion. Even the strongest structures eventually fall victim to natural law, but the process is accelerated by human neglect. When will the next bridge collapse? Absent regular care and maintenance, ''it's not a question of whether it's a question of when,'' says Richard Grant, a principal with Russell Corrosion Consultants. He pinpoints the crisis that's affecting every metal-based structure in the nation's transportation network, and talks about what we must do address it. It's time to ''shift our mindset from reactive to proactive,'' he says.
