Big Catches Reported, Job Seeking Gen Z Involves Helicopter Parents & the Easiest Breakfast Recipe

From reeling in giant fish and hunting alligators with sonar to have you heard about Gen Z bringing helicopter parents to job interviews? Plus I share an incredibly easy breakfast recipe for home or while at hunting camp. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Reeling in the Biggins: Fish & Alligator Adventures Father Lands West Virginia Record Catfish While Fishing With His Son A West Virginia father was hoping to catch a small catfish for his 4-year-old son to reel in. Instead, he landed a 72.75-pound blue catfish and set a new state record. Tyler Harmon was fishing the Ohio River near Ravenswood with his young son, Walker, and his own father, Rodney. The three generations had been using cut creek chub minnows when one of their rods suddenly bent. Tyler quickly realized he had hooked a very large fish. He battled it for about 20 minutes, trying to keep his 40-pound line away from underwater brush and the boat's anchor line. When the fish finally reached the boat, young Walker thought his dad had caught a big shark. Tyler's father helped net the fish, and they pulled it aboard. The family suspected it could be a state record, so they took the fish to a nearby bait shop and kept it alive in an aerated tank overnight. The next day, a West Virginia fisheries biologist officially weighed and measured it. The blue catfish weighed 72.75 pounds, measured nearly 48 inches long, and had a girth of 33.5 inches. That was enough to break the previous West Virginia catch-and-release record of 71 pounds. After the official weigh-in, Tyler released the giant catfish back into the Ohio River near where it was caught. And Walker now knows that what looked like a shark was actually a new state-record catfish. His family decided to try the technology to locate alligators in the Pascagoula River area of south Mississippi. On the first night, the family used sonar to find a nearly seven-foot gator. They snagged it and brought it back to shore to process the meat. The next night, they were looking for something bigger. While traveling through a bayou, Tatum and the group saw a huge splash. They soon realized a large alligator had killed and was feeding on another gator about seven feet long. The hunters waited for the big alligator to surface. After one failed attempt, Tatum hooked it again. The group eventually secured the animal with heavy tackle and a snare. The alligator turned out to be about 11 feet long. Getting it into their 17-foot boat was a challenge, and the normally 15-minute trip back to the ramp took about an hour because of the extra weight. Tatum believes the large gator was old and in poor condition. It had very few teeth and was extremely thin — possibly explaining why it attacked and ate the smaller alligator. The meat from both animals was processed and shared with family and friends. How about if this trend affects those entering the job market for the first time? Helicopter Parenting Takes a New Turn According to News Nation, career experts say more young adults are turning to their parents for help navigating a difficult job market — in some cases, even bringing Mom or Dad along to job interviews. Career coach Sarah Johnston says parents have shown up at job fairs, contacted recruiters on behalf of their children and, occasionally, tried to intervene after a child was dismissed from a job. A survey by resume service Zety found that one in five Gen Z job seekers had a parent attend a job interview with them. Experts say the trend has grown since the pandemic. Johnston says many parents may be stepping in because today's job market is very different from the one they experienced. Young workers face longer job searches, layoffs and new pressures from artificial intelligence and social media. For employers, Johnston recommends keeping the focus on the job candidate. If a parent shows up or calls on behalf of their adult child, hiring managers should politely redirect the conversation to the candidate. She says that while the behavior can seem excessive, many parents are simply trying to help their children succeed in a challenging job market.  Statistics: 20% (Zety Survey): A study of over 1,000 Gen Z workers found that 20% had a parent actually join a job interview—15% in person and 5% virtually.  Parental overinvolvement often extends past the interview room itself, Fox News: 63% of parents have submitted job applications for their children. 53% to 54% have emailed or called hiring managers directly. 21% of candidates had a parent contact a recruiter directly on their behalf. 10% had a parent negotiate a job offer. How do Hiring Managers feel or think when a parent is involved, according to Forbes? The moment a parent shows up, the panel stops assessing the candidate and instead starts asking something entirely different. “How could this person ever meet with a client alone, run a meeting, or take feedback without backup?” Forbes also reported, helicopter parenting is linked to higher anxiety and depression in emerging adults, alongside weaker self-regulation and lower belief in their own capability. Now What? The Easiest Breakfast Recipe You'll Ever Make A Quick Breakfast Anyone Can Make: Simple Ingredients, Big Breakfast Flavor EASY RECIPE: Caramel Rolls Meets Monkey Bread BEC's Carmel Roll Monkey Bread Instructions and Ingredients Preheat Oven to 350℉. Use a 9x13” baking dish or tin foil pan (my preference). Grease a baking dish or pan well with Non-Stick Cooking Spray. Ingredients: 2 Cans of Pillsbury Flaky Grands Biscuits. 1 Cup of Flavored Coffee Creamer (Substitute: Vanilla Ice Cream) 1 Cup of Brown Sugar 1 Cup of White Sugar 1 Cup of Butter 1 Tsp Vanilla *********************** ½ Cup Sugar 2 Tbsp Cinnamon   In a pot on Medium Heat melt the butter, stirring frequently while adding in the Brown and White Sugar, Vanilla. The combination should melt together nicely, then add the  Flavored Coffee Creamer (or vanilla ice cream.) Once bubbling, set the pot off to the side to cool. Take the 2 cans of biscuits. Open and pull apart each biscuit, then peel them apart into equal halves. Cut these circles of dough into four (4) pieces. In a large bowl with a lid cover add the cut flour dough pieces, sprinkle the ½ cup sugar and 2 TBSP of Cinnamon. Place the lid securely on the bowl and SHAKE, TOSS, and Shake. The dough pieces should all be equally coated in the cinnamon/sugar mix, if sticking together - break apart and repeat placing the lid and toss, shake again. Take the pot of Carmel, pour ⅓ into the bottom of the well greased dish or pan. Spread until the whole bottom is covered. Then take the coated dough pieces and cover the bottom of the pan with the dough. Pour the remaining Carmel Sauces over the top of the dough. Bake in oven for 25-30 minutes at 350℉, checking frequently after 25 minutes so as not to burn. Take out of the oven once the tops are starting to turn dark brown. While cooling, take a ¼ cup of butter and cut thin slices, placing on top to melt - spreading the melted butter around the whole top. ENJOY!! Pull apart caramel rolls anyone can make! One last note - I use Caramel Macchiato creamer, however use your favorite. Pumpkin Spice creamer, Hazelnut Creamer, or Pecan and toss in some chopped Pecans. Yum Yum! What if one of the best things you could do for an anxious, frustrated, or struggling kid is...do a little less?I know. Every parenting instinct in us is screaming, “Help them! Fix it! Tell them it's going to be okay!”But Dr. Kathryn Hecht says there's a problem with that last one: We're not wizards. We actually don't know that everything is going to be okay, and our kids are smart enough to know it too.So what can we say instead? In this episode, Dr. Hecht gives us an incredibly simple formula that combines empathy with confidence, plus a 10-second parenting rule that might be harder to practice than it sounds. We're talking about how to help kids do hard things, tolerate frustration, become more independent, and build real confidence without throwing them into the proverbial deep end.And I love this because we're not talking about manufacturing scary experiences for our kids. We're talking about the everyday stuff. Buttons. Homework. Birthday parties. Trying something new. All those little moments when we have to decide: Do I swoop in, or do I give my child a chance to discover, “Oh. I can handle this.”If you want to raise kids who see uncertainty less as a threat and more as something they can navigate, keep listening. This one is practical enough to use today.Resources We Mention for Raising Brave KidsSee Dr. Kathryn's books:The Be Brave Activity Book: 100 Exposure-Based Challenges That DARE Kids to Boss Back Their Worry and Anxiety Once and for All (Amazon/Bookshop.org)Releasing in February 2027 – The Can-Do Activity Book for Kids: Try Things on Your Own, Deal with Big Feelings, and Grow Confident Along the Way (Amazon/Bookshop.org)Watch Dr. Kathryn's TEDx Talk, “How to raise kids who can handle hard things”Get your kids started learning to do hard things with #LifeSkillsNow!Germ theory vs. terrain theory with Dr. Catherine ClintonThe “Worst Mom in America” on Raising Confident KidsHave kids anxious about eating? What if one of our most loving parenting instincts is accidentally making our kids less confident?Oof.As parents, we're wired to help. To reassure. To rescue. To make the crying stop in the grocery store before everyone in aisle seven starts judging us. (You know what I mean?)But child psychologist Dr. Kathryn Hecht says kids aren't nearly as fragile as we sometimes treat them.In fact, they need age-appropriate challenges to build what she calls “handleability”, that deep-down belief that says: This is hard, but I can handle it.I absolutely loved this conversation because it gets right into the practical question so many of us are wrestling with: How do we raise kids who can actually handle hard things? We dig into:Why constantly removing obstacles can undermine a child's confidence, even when we're doing it out of loveThe fascinating idea that kids are anti-fragile, and why some stress and challenge actually help build emotional resilienceWhy “healthy kids = happy kids” is a parenting myth we may need to toss outHow rescuing a child brings short-term relief but can create more distress long-termWhy our kids sometimes interpret our help as evidence that they couldn't have handled it themselvesWhat “coping efficacy” or “handleability” looks like in normal family life, without turning your home into a psychology clinicWhy exposure therapy is much less scary than it sounds, and how parents can help kids take small, voluntary steps toward something difficultThe difference between roller-coaster scary and horror-movie scary, and why that distinction might completely change how you help an anxious or hesitant childDr. Hecht has this incredible ability to take clinical psychology and turn it into language that makes you think, “Ohhhh. I can actually use this with my kid.”And I have a feeling you'll finish this one looking at your child's next hard moment a little differently.Resources We Mention for Raising Resilient KidsSee Dr. Kathryn's TEDx Talk, “How to raise kids who can handle hard things”How to Raise an Adult by Julie Lythcott-Haims and my interview with JulieGet your kids started learning to do hard things with #LifeSkillsNow!Check out my new book at raisinghealthyfamilies.com/pickybook!Kitchen StewardshipRaising Healthy Families follow Katie on Instagram or FacebookSubscribe to the newsletter to get weekly updatesYouTube shorts channel for HPHFind the Healthy Parenting Handbook at raisinghealthyfamilies.com/podcastAffiliate links used here. What starts as parenting advice becomes a much bigger conversation about race, education, self worth, and the pressure parents carry. In Episode 80, Dr. Marjorie and Michael react to Julie Lythcott-Haims' viral TED Talk on overparenting. They agree with its core message: let kids build independence through real responsibility, stop measuring love by achievement, and stop turning childhood into a checklist. But they also ask the question the TED Talk never does:Whose kids actually get to be free wildflowers? For Black families, unconditional love also means preparing children for a world that often expects them to fail. Academic success is not a guarantee of safety, but it can be a buffer. The conversation explores why universal parenting advice often overlooks very different realities. The discussion then turns to college admissions, anti-DEI rhetoric, and the growing message that "college is not for everybody." The hosts examine who is giving that advice and whether they follow it themselves.Michael also argues that today's grade portals have become social media for parenting anxiety. Every notification becomes another reminder that a child's performance is being used as a measure of their parents' success. Marjorie pushes back, defending formative assessment, leading to one of the episode's most thoughtful disagreements. The conversation ends with practical parenting advice about boredom, chores, independence, and building genuine self efficacy instead of creating a checklist childhood.• Whose Kids Get to Be Free Wildflowers?• Helicopter Parenting vs Free Range Parenting• Why Unconditional Love Looks Different for Black Families• The Truth About College Is Not for Everybody• The Grade App Is Your Instagram• Formative Assessment vs Surveillance• Why Chores, Boredom, and Independence Matter• Building Self Efficacy Instead of Parenting Anxiety"Whose kids get to be free wildflowers?""Make your kids do chores and love them unconditionally.""To unconditionally love my kids is also to prepare them for a society that expects them to fail.""The product is not the kid. What if your children are absorbing everything — the tension, the conflict, the words you think they can't hear? He highlights the subtle line between support and overcontrol, offering a thoughtful framework to help parents foster responsibility while maintaining a strong relationship. This perspective helps parents recalibrate their role to better prepare their children for real-world autonomy. Inside, she explores:   → What stretching is—and why intentionally letting kids struggle through slightly uncomfortable situations builds resilience, frustration tolerance, and confidence (the opposite of helicopter parenting or overprotective parenting) → The critical question to ask when kids engage in undesired behavior (transition tantrums, meltdowns, refusal): what skill are they missing that would reduce this behavior's frequency or intensity? → How scaffolding works in real life: meeting kids where they are (the task feels too hard, they're overwhelmed) while still stretching them toward mastery—with examples from speech therapy sessions and everyday moments like zipping a coat or handling sibling conflict → Why letting kids struggle through hard things without rescuing them is one of the most loving things you can do—and how to support them without fixing it or taking the discomfort away → The real-life coaching example: a child making unsafe choices at school and using manipulation ("you're not listening to me!") to avoid consequences—and why the parents had to hold the boundary even when the child was upset, because stretch moments teach kids they have the power to make good choices no matter their environment → How to stretch yourself as an adult if you're a people-pleaser or overgiver: setting boundaries with loved ones without over-explaining, saying no without guilt, negotiating your worth, and getting comfortable being uncomfortable—because staying small to keep others comfortable is exhausting   Resources & Links:   Mentioned in This Episode:   → Scaffolding: meeting kids where they are developmentally while stretching them toward growth and skill-building → Life coaching with Albiona (focused on unblocking patterns, setting boundaries, and building resilience for parents and individuals)   Connect with Albiona:   → Book a Free Discovery Call (1:1 Coaching - Parent or Life Coaching) - https://www.theparentingreframe.com/coaching → Follow Albiona on Instagram - @theparentingreframe → Follow Albiona on TikTok - @theparentingreframe → Join Albiona's Paid Substack Community - https://theparentingreframe.substack.com → Email Albiona: albiona@theparentingreframe.com   Loved this episode?   Please rate, review, and share it with a parent who's constantly rescuing their kids from discomfort, a helicopter parent ready to let their child struggle and grow, a people-pleaser who can't say no without guilt, or anyone ready to stop staying small and start stretching into growth.   Because the truth is: resilience isn't built in the easy moments. It's built when things feel hard and we do them anyway—and then we realize we're stronger than we thought. And our kids? They're stronger than we give them credit for.   Until next time, Albiona

In this episode, Prof Leah unpacks teen dating—covenants, text surveillance, and all—and asks what happens when parents' fear of the future swallows their kids' present. Drawing on her research on the mental load (and her forthcoming book Drained), she connects helicopter parenting, constant digital surveillance, and perfection pressure to teens' isolation, anxiety, and lack of room to fail, urging parents to back off, drop the impossible standards, and let kids be gloriously imperfect humans.Follow Leah: @prof.leahruppanner Hosted on Acast. Adulting isn't something they teach in school, but Heather Redisch is here to help college graduates figure it out.   I see it all the time—young professionals landing their first jobs and feeling completely unprepared. Why does the transition from school to career feel so overwhelming? Heather Redisch, founder of The Talent Maven and creator of the Adulting 101 Masterclass, has spent nearly 25 years in recruiting and has noticed a shift. College graduates today struggle with confidence, communication, and the realities of professional life in ways previous generations didn't. The rise of smartphones, helicopter parenting, and the impact of COVID-19 have all played a role, leaving many feeling unsure of how to step into the working world.   In this episode, Heather and I dig into what's missing and what young professionals can do to set themselves up for success. We talk about work ethic, resilience, and the small, uncomfortable steps that build confidence over time. We also get into the generational disconnect in the workplace, why older employees misinterpret the behaviors of younger colleagues and how both sides can bridge that gap.   Success isn't about having it all figured out on day one. It's about learning, adapting, and taking action. Heather's Adulting 101 Masterclass gives college graduates the tools and support they need to step into their careers with confidence.   Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Introduction  05:09 Challenges of Transitioning to Adulthood 07:07 The Anxious Generation and Technology 08:02 Helicopter Parenting and Its Effects 10:05 The Role of Confidence in Adulting 11:00 Communication Skills in the Digital Age 13:01 Generational Differences in the Workplace 15:04 Building Resilience and Facing Awkwardness 16:04 Being Comfortable with Uncomfortable 17:09 Misconceptions About Gen Z 18:08 Bridging the Generational Gap 20:22 Skills Can Be Learned: Etiquette and Resilience 21:14 The Role of Mental Health in the Workplace 22:07 Balancing Entitlement and Responsibility 23:08 The Reality of First Jobs 24:06 The Importance of Foundational Skills 26:04 Career Paths Are Not Linear 27:04 Valuable Skills for Graduates 29:10 Practical Tips for Building Confidence 31:10 The Importance of Proactivity 32:28 The Role of Feedback in Growth 33:10 Celebrating Small Wins 34:11 Accepting and Learning from Feedback 35:15 Closing   Connect with Heather Redisch: Learn More About Adulting 101 Adulting 101 on Instagram Follow Adulting 101 on Facebook Connect with Heather on LinkedIn   Connect With Leslie: Help Your Teen Cultivate Confidence Website Instagram Facebook Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

At your wits end with trying to find effective consequences for your teen's behavior? Maybe loosening the reins rather than tightening them might work better! (Hint: Stop 'helicopter parenting' your teen!) On this episode of the Brainy Moms podcast, Dr. Amy and Sandy interview Ann Coleman, an attorney, parent educator, and host of the podcast, Speaking of Teens.  Ann shares a deeply personal journey that many parents might find all too relatable. Imagine discovering that your child, already grappling with anxiety and ADHD, has turned to marijuana. Anne's initial reaction was to tighten the reins through control and punishment, only to watch her relationship with her son deteriorate. However, a transformative encounter with a family counselor led her to embrace empathy and understanding, an approach she now champions through her podcast and Parent Camp program.Ann's story prompts us to question the long-held belief in helicopter parenting and its impact on teen autonomy. As we talk about societal pressures that push teenagers to behave beyond their developmental capabilities, there's a stark reminder of the importance of mutual respect. The conversation veers into the pitfalls of projecting perfect family lives on social media and the real harm it can cause by stigmatizing parenting struggles. We emphasize the need for balance—between stepping in to guide teens and allowing teens to face natural consequences—a critical factor that can significantly influence adolescent development.Through personal anecdotes and expert advice, we explore the pressures surrounding academic success and the value of redefining what it means to "succeed." From managing the distractions of college life to understanding the significance of setting and negotiating boundaries, this episode offers a comprehensive look at fostering resilience and independence in teenagers. Ann's insights, enriched by her own family experiences, serve as a guide for parents eager to connect with their teens in more authentic and supportive ways. Listen in to discover strategies that respect and nurture your teenager's emerging identity while maintaining a safe and supportive environment.CONNECT WITH US: Website: www.TheBrainyMoms.com Email: info@TheBrainyMoms.com Social Media: @TheBrainyMoms Our sponsor's website: www.LearningRx.comSandy's TikTok: @TheBrainTrainerLadyDr. Amy's brand new IG: @DrAmySaysGraceDr. Amy's website: www.AmyMoorePhD.com

In this episode, Lisa and Cheryl discuss:Strategies to help coach your teen without becoming a helicopter parent. How to identify when helping your teen is actually hurting them. Why your teen needs to learn to fix things on their own before they reach high school graduation.Transitioning from a parenting to a coaching role in your child's life.Key Takeaways: Remind your teen of the wins that they had before they got to the big challenges they are facing. When you helicopter parent your teen through high school, you prevent them from learning vital life skills they will need when they get to college and beyond. In college, parents cannot call the financial aid office, professors, dean, or any other office for or about your student, even if you are paying tuition.Helicopter parenting is not about your child. It is about you, the parent. Let your teen live their life, and go do those things you feel you're missing out on for yourself. “If you keep making these decisions for your kids, if you keep diving in and fixing everything, not only are you not giving them the skills they need, but I really believe it sends a message that you don't have any faith in them.” – Cheryl PankhurstAbout Cheryl Pankhurst: With an illustrious career spanning over 25 years as a Special Education Specialist, Cheryl has dedicated her life to understanding and supporting teenagers facing unique challenges. Through her transformative journey, Cheryl discovered her true calling – to uplift and empower not only teens with diagnoses but every young person navigating the complexities of adolescence. Her groundbreaking podcast, 'Teen Minds Redefined,' serves as a sanctuary for parents seeking guidance and wisdom on the rollercoaster ride of raising teenagers. Through this journey Cheryl has discovered that the “guidance” for parents starts with themselves. In order to raise our humans to be their true authentic selves, we must start living and speaking our own truth. It's not them; it's you. That is the good news, it begins with us and as we gain new insights, shift our perspective find the joy and calm within us, it causes the “ripple effect” to the people we love and care about. Beyond her professional endeavours, Cheryl is also a devoted Mom of two beautiful humans, a daughter and a life partner. As a lifelong Yogi addicted to doing the inner work, speaking her truth, and shining her light, Cheryl strives to embody the values she preaches, inspiring others to live their true authentic selves.Episode References:Email Guide: flourishcoachingco.com/email#146 Overcoming Student Procrastination with Michelle McAnaney, the College SpyGet Lisa's Free on-demand video: How-to guide for your teen to choose the right major, college, & career...(without painting themselves into a corner, missing crucial deadlines, or risking choices you both regret). flourishcoachingco.com/video Connect with Cheryl:Website: https://cherylpankhurst.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cheryl.a.pankhurst/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cheryl.a.pankhurst Linked: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cheryl-ann-pankhurst-1b611855 Podcast: Teen Minds Redefined: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYv9FQy1X43wwoYg0zF8zAJw6-nCpHMAk Connect with Lisa:Website: https://www.flourishcoachingco.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@flourishcoachingcoInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/flourishcoachingco/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/flourish-coaching-co

Deion Sanders has emerged as college football's premier helicopter father. His prime objective in Colorado: getting his son, Shedeur, locked in as the number-one overall pick in the NFL Draft. Coach Prime's overbearing parenting reminds Jason of another little league dad who pushed his once-promising quarterback son into a life of drugs and disappointment. Jason lays out his case that Deion Sanders is the modern-day Marv Marinovich. Like Deion, Marv coached and trained his son from infancy with the goal of him becoming a top QB in the NFL. Ultimately, Marv's domineering presence in his son's football career caused his entire life to derail. Will Deion drive his son down the same path of destruction? Plus, Jason confronts Fox Sports' Colin Cowherd over recent comments about Whitlock's criticism of Coach Deion and Colorado. Two days after charging a 5-year-old as a racist for wearing face paint and a headdress to a Chiefs game, Deadspin writer Carron J.
