This may be the 666th episode of The Ledge, but there’s nothing evil about the music played tonight. It’s actually nothing but joyful noise, 38 blasts that prove that rock and roll is as strong as ever. And once again, we traverse the world for quality sounds. Besides the usual lineup of Americans, there’s not one but two fabulous bands from France, along with other European artists. There’s the usual handful of Australians. There’s also a plethora of veterans still pumping out records you need to hear. Muck and the Mires have been releasing garage rock for over 25 years. The Rabies reunited after 40 years for one of the great surprises of the years. Former Soft Boys guitarist Kimberly Rew returns. Personlity Cult may be much younger, but they consist of members of Ledge favorites Mind Spiders and Paint Fumes (plus many other bands). What’s your favorite new release? Generally speaking, when I do shows devoted to years of the past I go way back. Like, at the bare minimum 25 years, and as far back as 50 years. Looking at my shows from 2013, though, I decided tonight I’d do something a little different. Let’s go through some of my favorite records from only ten years ago. While I am one that believes there’s great rock and roll released each and every years (despite what many of my fellow oldsters proclaim), 2013 was even better than usual. There’s all sorts of lofi indie power pop from the likes of Mind Spiders, Bad Sports, and Fidlar. There’s the discovery of a wonderful up and coming songwriter named Lydia Loveless. There’s the second release by the reformed Superchunk (my favorite record of the year). And, of course, there’s also the return of The Replacements. Yes, this happened due to a tragedy, as Slim Dunlap had suffered a stroke the previous year. But what a joy to hear Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson quickly recording a handful of their favorite oldies. Even better was the Songs For Slim singles series which saw all kinds of Slim’s friends recording their favorite Dunalp […]

You'll recognize TV's Daniel from his roles in hit-making Texas bands such as Bad Sports, Wax Museums, Video, Radioactivity, and Mind Spiders just to name a few. Bobby Hazzard gets the lowdown from Daniel on what all of these groups have been up to lately, plus some hints at upcoming releases like a new Video LP (on Third Man Records!?!) and brand new project called Grave City. They also compare notes on hot-button topics such as the merits of Captain Sensible, Sonny Vincent shows, Alice Cooper albums, and rasslin' rock. Plus: On the intro, the SB4E crew is getting psyched up to head west on a little road trip.

Holy moly, things are crazy in the midwest right now! Tornadoes, hail, sunshine, and a huge pile of badass rock n' roll records to listen to are among the highlights. EPISODE #41 of Random Old Records features an hour of rad jams from what is shaping up to be one of the best music years on record. This is also South By Southwest week, so #41 features a bunch of bands playing the annual music orgy plus so much more! We're talkin' amazing pop tunes from La Sera, Frankie Rose, and Summer Twins, raging punk from LA slackers FIDLAR, the noisy Ramones trip of Terry Malts, and the Denton weird power pop of Mind Spiders. We're talkin' brand NEW tracks from Portland's Mean Jeans and Guantanamo Baywatch, whose new LPs won't be out for another month. We're talkin' brain-frying psychedelic rock n' roll from The Sufis and Ketamines. Most of all, we're talkin' about a track called "Conversation" from one of the most impressive debut LPs I've heard in forever, the 60s sunshine pop/psych hybrid known as OUTER MINDS. Seriously, this album is so good that it's unreal. Think early Arthur Lee and Love mixed with the complex vocal harmonies of The Association, and just run to the record store NOW.Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. 2011 is in full swing, and there's a ton of amazing new jams coming out, so what better time to drop another installment of Random Old Records?! EPISODE #28 is a tribute to the ultimate diva Tura Satana (RIP) and it features a whole bunch of her classic quotes from the classic Russ Meyer flick Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill! As far as the musical portion goes, it starts off with some classic '90s tunes from Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney, then moves into a mix of new and old rock n' roll from Spencey Dude And The Doodles, 20/20, Mind Spiders, Mr. Airplane Man, and Bare Wires, then finishes up with brand spankin' new tracks from Smith Westerns, Jail Weddings, and the Strange Boys!Big surprise that the most intriguing track to drop in 2011 so far comes from Austin's Strange Boys, off a FREE Scion Garage A/V single. My favorite band of 2010 goes OUT THERE with a seriously arty song that mixes yacht rock, silly white reggae, barking preacher voices, and their patented Stonesy swagger into a four minute firebomb interrupted by jolts of AM radio static. It sounds like a band of tired rock n' rollers driving their van down a faceless highway at 4 AM, sick of all the previously packed CDs, tapes, and iPods, desperately trying to find something good to listen to on the radio. Incredible!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! You can also go the traditional route and stream or download the new episode below. Come back next month (or so) for another episode of Random Old Records.
