“He(swt) created death and life to test you.” In Surah al-Mulk, Allah doesn't mention life first—He(swt) mentions death first. Why? Life is the test, and death is when it ends—when we turn in the paper, and the grades come from the Almighty. In these last ten nights of Ramadan, this ayah reminds us that the goal is not who collected the most—money, cars, degrees, or applause—but who did the best deeds with sincerity and ikhlas. The contrast in Surah al-Mulk is sobering: are you the one who crawls blindly, face down in confusion, chasing fleeting pleasures? Or are you the one who walks upright, guided by purpose and revelation, heading toward Allah with clarity? The Prophet ﷺ once responded to a man asking about the Day of Judgment by asking, “What have you prepared for it?” That's the real question. Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKqR_KHJuSc

Welcome back to Day 2 of our 2025 BeQuranic Challenge. If you're just joining us today, no worries! You can check out yesterday's post where I explained the whole idea behind this challenge. But here's the quick summary:Every day this January, we'll be diving into the Qur'an—reading, understanding, exploring its timeless lessons, and figuring out how to apply them in our daily lives. Oh, and there's an extra challenge too: memorising Surah al-Mulk, one aya per day! You can find all the details on our website at www.qaswa.house/bequranic.Alright, let's get started with today's aya from Surah al-Mulk. We're reading the second aya today, and we'll also break down some tajweed rules. For our BeQuranic members, there's an exclusive tafseer and reflection session to dive deeper into the wisdom of this verse. Not a member yet? Consider joining to get the most out of this journey! Here's the aya:ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلْمَوۡتَ وَٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ لِيَبۡلُوَكُمۡ أَيُّكُمۡ أَحۡسَنُ عَمَلً۬اۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡغَفُورُ“˹He is the One˺ Who created death and life to test which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Almighty, All-Forgiving.” Get full access to Be Quranic at bequranic.substack.com/subscribe
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh! Welcome back to BeQuranic. I know I've been on a long a hiatus, but here I am back in this new year. But we are making some slight changes to BeQuranic. Instead of going one aya a day from Surah al-Baqarah, we are synching the Quran lessons at Qaswa House and BeQuranic. For the month of January, we will be exploring Surah al-Mulk together.Be Quranic is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Here's how it works: Every day in January, we'll have a short video dedicated to one ayah of Surah Al-Mulk.• We'll start by reading the ayah, learning the correct way to recite it.• Then, we'll explore its meaning to understand what Allah is telling us.• Next, we'll dive into its timeless wisdom, reflecting on the lessons it teaches.• And finally, we'll discuss how to apply those lessons in our daily lives to truly benefit from this Surah.”“At the end of each session, there will be a quick online quiz to test your knowledge and help you remember what you've learned. These quizzes are short, fun, and a great way to keep track of your progress.”“By the end of January, inshAllah, you'll have read, understood, and reflected on all 30 ayat of Surah Al-Mulk. And on the 31st day, we'll have a special session to wrap up everything we've learned, review the entire Surah, and celebrate your progress together.”This program isn't just about learning. It's about building a habit. Surah Al-Mulk only takes 3–5 minutes to read daily. Imagine the blessings of reciting it every day for the rest of your life. And if you memorise just one ayah a day with this program, by the end of the month, you'll have the entire Surah memorised!”Let me share something amazing with you. If you start reading Surah Al-Mulk daily at the age of 10 and live until 80, you'll spend less than 89 days of your entire life reading this Surah. That's just three months of your life. But imagine this: those few minutes a day can bring you an eternity of peace. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told us that Surah Al-Mulk intercedes for its reader and protects them in their grave. Now think about someone who passed away 1,000 years ago. If they had made this Surah a daily habit, they've been benefiting from its blessings for 1,000 years—all because they spent less than 90 days reading it during their life! This is the power of Surah Al-Mulk. It's not just a Surah to read—it's a protector, a comfort, and a source of immense blessings. And this program is your chance to make it a part of your life forever.Let's say Bismillah and start this journey together. I can't wait to see all the amazing progress you'll make this month, inshAllah. Now, take this short quiz to test your knowledge Get full access to Be Quranic at bequranic.substack.com/subscribe

Ali Usman Qasmi comes back on The Pakistan Experience to discuss his new book, “Qaum, Mulk, Sultanat” - on this episode we do a deep dive in the 1950s in Pakistan; how was Pakistan turned into an Islamic State? We discuss Ayub Khan, The National Anthem, the Indian Citizenship Act, the notion of the Nation State, Establishment's narratives and Imran Khan taking over the Establishment's narrative. After the trauma of mass violence and massive population movements around the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, both new nation states faced the enormous challenge of creating new national narratives, symbols, and histories, as well as a new framework for their political life. While leadership in India claimed the anti-colonial movement, Gandhi, and a civilizational legacy in the subcontinent, the new political elite in Pakistan were faced with a more complex task: to carve out a separate and distinct Muslim history and political tradition from a millennium long history of cultural and religious interaction, mixing, and coexistence. Drawing on a rich archive of diverse sources, Ali Qasmi traces the complex development of ideas of citizenship and national belonging in the postcolonial Muslim state, offering a nuanced and sweeping history of the country's formative period. Qasmi paints a rich picture of the long, arduous, and often conflict-ridden process of writing a democratic constitution of Pakistan, while simultaneously narrating the invention of a range of new rituals of state—such as the exact color of the flag, the precise date of birth of the national poet of Pakistan, and the observation of Eid as a “national festival”—providing an illuminating analysis of the practices of being Pakistani, and a new portrait of Muslim history in the subcontinent. Ali Usman Qasmi is Associate Professor of History at Lahore University of Management Sciences.
