According to law enforcement officials, Paul Murdaugh, who was also 19, was allegedly operating the boat while intoxicated. Witnesses and authorities indicated that the group had been drinking on the evening of the accident, and Paul had been observed purchasing alcohol at a Parker's Kitchen convenience store in Ridgeland earlier that night. In 2019, Paul was charged with three felony counts, including boating under the influence causing death. However, he never stood trial due to his death in June 2021, when he and his mother, Maggie, were killed at the family's Colleton County hunting estate. Alex Murdaugh, now serving a life sentence, was later convicted for the murders of his wife and son. In October 2023, a court filing detailed that Murdaugh's insurance provider, Progressive, agreed to pay $500,000 as part of a settlement with the Beach family. In a significant development following the legal saga surrounding convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh, a court order issued on February 5th has allocated almost half of his remaining assets to victims of a deadly 2019 boat accident, according to the Post and Courier. The court order, stemming from a tragic incident where a boat driven by Murdaugh's son, Paul, crashed into a bridge piling, allocates 29% of the funds to the family of Mallory Beach, who lost her life in the accident. Mallory's family has expressed that their pursuit was more about accountability and setting a precedent than about the money itself. "From the Beach's perspective, it really was never about the money," remarked Beach family attorney Mark Tinsley. "It was all about accountability and precedent, and making an example in the hopes that before someone allows their kid to live dangerously and drink and drive, and enables them to engage in this unlawful conduct, that somebody will take stock of what happened and that you can lose everything." Tinsley emphasized that while the monetary compensation is significant, the greater comfort lies in the acknowledgment of accountability and the potential deterrent effect on similar incidents in the future. The disbursement also includes 11% for Paul Murdaugh's then-girlfriend, Morgan Doughty, and 5% for another survivor, Miley Altman, totaling 45% for victims of the boat crash and their loved ones. These funds, totaling just under $1.8 million, were garnered from the sale of some of Murdaugh's properties and farm equipment, as well as from a 401(k) plan. Lead detectives speak out about the investigation into once-prominent South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh, who was convicted of murdering his wife, Maggie, and son Paul. Craig Melvin reports.

The legal maneuvering never ceases where Alex Murdaugh is concerned. This week, Murdaugh attorney Dick Harpootlian is once again raising concerns that his client won't be able to get a fair jury trial due to media attention when the Satterfield fraud and money laundering case goes to court on November 27 in Beaufort County. Harpootlian says a sampling of responses from potential jurors on pre-trial questionnaires show Murdaugh might find it impossible in "beautiful Beaufort by the sea" to find a juror who's a blank slate. Harpootlian now wants the case moved out of not only Beaufort, but of the Lowcountry entirely. A hearing on the issue is set for Friday, November 18, at 10 a.m. in Beaufort County.Meantime, we still don't know what'll happen with respect to Murdaugh's petition to the Supreme Court asking that they bar presiding Judge Clifton Newman from overseeing any more Murdaugh cases. Disbarred attorney Alex Murdaugh is set to appear before a judge again. The convicted killer has been indicted by a federal grand jury on one count of bank fraud, a total of five counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and 14 counts of money laundering. The indictment alleges that while an attorney, Murdaugh came up with three schemes to take money and property from his clients. If convicted on the federal charges, 480 more years could be added to his current sentence. Fines could exceed $13 million.    That's not all of Alex Murdaugh's legal woes.
