This week’s show is pretty remarkable. My guest is Steven Elliott. Steven was one of two men most likely responsible for the death of Pat Tillman—the NFL player that enlisted as an Army Ranger as a result of the 9/11 attacks in NYC. During this chat, we talk about the story of how he ended up as a Ranger and all that happened while he was deployed. We also chat a bit about veteran care, caring for those actively serving, PTSD, America's current global military footprint and whether or not we are being helpful, and so much more.  Please visit The Elliot Fund for articles, books, videos, and other resources you can use to become an advocate for those serving in our military. And buy Steven’s forthcoming War Story: A Memoir book on or before May 21. Or preorder it from your local library.  _______________________ Follow Let’s Give A Damn on Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter to keep up with all that is going on. This week on the show, I chat with Trae Crowder aka The Liberal Redneck. Trae Crowder hails from Celina, TN—population 1500. Warning right here at the onset, there is more cursing than usual in this interview. I like to curse but Trae loves to curse. If you don’t like to hear it, this might be a good one to skip. Or maybe just don’t listen to this in the car with your kids on the way to soccer practice. So, just wanted to give you a heads up because, I love you. Trae has been doing comedy for quite some time but his career skyrocketed after this video that he made about North Carolina’s HB2 bill went viral back in 2016. When I saw that video back in 2016, I really appreciated his creative blend of comedy and talking about important issues. Important societal and political issues have always been addressed in comedy and Trae is doing that very well, I think. In this conversation, Trae and I talk about how there are more liberals in the South that might think, what liberals get right and what they get wrong, how we move forward in these divisive times, and so much more. It was an absolute pleasure to meet and hang with Trae for a bit. I hope you’ll follow him on Facebook and Twitter. Maybe even show up for one of his live shows! ___________________________ Follow Let’s Give A Damn on Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter to keep up with all that is going on. I went up to the Rainn Wilson residence last week in LA but it was not to chat with Rainn this time. I stopped by to record a podcast conversation with his wife and much better half, Holiday Reinhorn. Erin Shacory, one of the LIDÈ Haiti board members, joined us for the chat and I had a blast. We spent the majority of our time together chatting about all things Haiti, LIDÈ, empowering young people, and we even talk about how a Rainn stole a bunch of hotel keys over 20 years ago. But back to LIDÈ. LIDÈ provides academic support and arts programs that empower girls who have been denied equal access to education and strengthen their resiliency. You may be asking, “Is educating Haitian young girls in the arts the best thing LIDÈ can be doing for them? I mean, they probably need clothes, and food, and jobs!” Holiday and Erin have a fantastic response to this question.  Allow me to point something out to you—this organization exists to serve young women and it is primarily led and run by women. This is hugely important. Two of the co-founders are women. Most of the board members are women—over half of them being Haitian women. And almost all of their staff are women. Amazing! I do want to give a special shout-out to the third co-founder, Kathryn Adams, who is also the executive director and who has lived in Haiti for the last 4 years. She, alongside Rainn and Holiday, have started something truly impactful, hopeful, and amazing in Haiti.  Follow LIDÈ Haiti on social media at Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. My guests today are Philippe Lazaro and Christie Huizenga Renaud. Philippe and Christi are part of the Plant With Purpose team. Plant With Purpose equips farming families around the world to increase farm yields, heal damaged ecosystems, improve nutrition, and increase household savings and opportunities. Their approach solves two major issues facing the world today: environmental degradation and rural poverty.  Another way to say it is that they reverse deforestation and poverty around the world by transforming the lives of the rural poor. Since our chat is about the environment and food and sustainability and other things like these, we met at a park in downtown LA to record our conversation. If felt like the right thing to do to meet outside while we had our chat. We talk about the environment, sustainability, how we can and should make the world a little bit smaller, we talk about a podcast we are creating for their organization, and so much more. These two humans impressed the hell out of me. So grateful for their work!  Follow Plant With Purpose on Twitter and Instagram. She created and hosted a podcast called Sold in America. It’s an eight-episode journey into the world of selling sex in the United States. This past weekend, my family and I attended a vigil in Nashville to mourn the loss of the 50 men, women, and children who died in their place of worship in New Zealand. Muslims, Jews, and Christians gathered together to comfort our Muslim brothers and sisters and also to re-commit to pursuing a peace-filled world together. It was beautiful.  There was a local muslim leader that led parts of the vigil. Towards the end, she shared some ideas for how non-muslims can help dispel the widespread fears surrounding Muslims and Islam—otherwise known as Islamophobia. I found her ideas helpful and I was glad to know that I was already doing some of them. And I look forward to finding ways to implement the others. Here are two of her ideas: Meet a Muslim. It’s important to get to know about Islam from a Muslim. If you don’t know any Muslims living around you (I guarantee most of you do), google your local mosque. I’ve been to a few mosques and I’ve always been welcomed with open arms. And I know they’d be happy to meet you and to help you learn more about Islam.  Partake in local activities led by Muslims. Muslims are very active in the community so I’m sure there will be many ways for you to get involved.  Let me know if you end up taking this advice seriously. I’d really love to know about budding relationships and partnerships happening amongst the Let’s Give A Damn family as a result fo this tragedy. My guest today is Diana Oestreich. My goodness, Diana, is amazing! She is a war veteran, a sexual assault nurse examiner, a justice advocate, a recovering racist, AND the Key Relationships Officer at Preemptive Love Coalition. Enis launched Gigamunch—a Nashville based company that prepares a new meal each week for you from a different country and they deliver it to you fully cooked and ready to go. My family and I have eaten their meals and they are amazing. The meal I remember eating was from Budapest, Hungary. It was mind-blowingly delicious! And they throw in a few components to the meal—like a music playlist and a ton of information about that week's country—that you’ll never get from Blue Apron or Hello Fresh or any of the others out there. This is a completely new and amazing experience.  What I love about this company is that exposure begets empathy. And we all need to harness more empathy in our lives. And the reality is, so many people can’t or won’t travel as much as they’d like to so Gigamunch brings the world to you. It’s a win-win for everyone! Don't worry, we don’t talk about food the entire time. His story is amazing and he shares great tips and wisdom for how to get healthy and stay healthy in this crazy world. No oldies. But there are a few exceptions and Audrey is one of them. Most of her music is spiritual and Christian in nature and it has helped us so much over the last few years as we continue out spiritual journey. Listen to her today on Spotify! I’ve just described Audrey the artist to you but we don’t actually talk that much about her music all that much in this conversation. During our chat, I mentioned a song she wrote as a “prayer for all the mamas who have had their children separated from them at the borders of our country. That’s the muscle you have to build in your psyche — the one that reminds you to just get up.” Additionally, he has conquered stage 4 testicular chance and multiple brain tumors over the last couple of decades. Any denial or indifference to the horror of this chapter in the history of humankind diminishes all men and women everywhere and invites repetition of this great evil." —President Donald Trump "The threats of violence, xenophobia, and anti-Semitism still exist today. Today’s conversations is with the fantastic Arnav Dalmia.  5 years ago, Arnav graduated from CGIU. 4 years ago, he and his two co-founders launched their new company, Cubii. Simply put, their mission is to get people moving more. Hundreds of millions of people across the globe spent 7, 8, 9, and 10 hours per day sitting at a desk or in front of a TV. Or both! Mayo Clinic actually calls “sitting the new smoking.” So, how do they aim to end this epidemic? He and his pals invented Cubii—”a compact seated elliptical trainer that integrates exercise into your routine, turning sitting time into active time.” What’s cool about the product is that your data is stored in the system and shared with your accountability partners or office mates so you can cheer each other on or if you’re the slacker, your people can encourage you to pick up the pace. 4 years into their company, they have 100,000 active users all over the world! Super cool stuff.  Follow Arnav and Cubii on Twitter! Today, November 6, is midterm election’s day here in America. I love our global listeners but since most of our listeners are from America, I have something to say to you. No matter who you are or where you land politically, I hope you voted. It is our right and one we must not take for granted. Having said that, let me say this—I hope you are voting for equality and justice for all people in this election. Not just equality for some people.  I bumped this podcast conversation up a few weeks because I wanted you to hear it on election day. Not because I hope to sway your vote. I am releasing it today as more of a symbolic gesture of what I want to see more of in our country and in our world in the future.  Today, you’ll get to meet Bnyad Sharef and Maggie Anderson. Bnyad is a refugee from Iraq. He’s also a Muslim. Maggie was a staunch Trump supporter and was very anti-immigrant and anti-refugee. Bnyad and Maggie’s friendship is going to blow your mind. The changes in both of their lives are amazing and they give me so much hope.  They met a few months ago when they were asked to be part of a campaign called #BeUnafraid. This campaign was created by Catholic Relief Services and my friend Jeremy Cowart. In this campaign, they asked dozens of refugees and their American neighbors to start critical conversations by sharing their stories with each other. What happened was absolutely beautiful. You can learn more about the campaign here and here.  Fair Warning: We recorded this podcast a few days ago in Maggie’s hotel room at midnight as soon as Maggie arrived in Nashville for a video shoot I helped coordinate with a huge media platform. (In a few weeks I’ll be able to share more about that.) Remembering this was recorded at midnight is a huge key to getting through this conversation. At certain points, it’s gonna sound like we are super drunk. We are not. But if you get through this conversation (please do!), you’re going to find some beautiful gems. Bnyad and Maggie are amazing humans and I can’t wait to introduce them to you.  ____________________________ Follow Let’s Give A Damn on Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter to keep up with all that is going on. Ceallaigh experienced a massive amount of relational and emotional pain early in her adult life. She shares more about that in our conversation so I won’t get into it here but I wanted to point out here that one of my favorite things about life is that beautiful things are oftentimes birthed out of pain and suffering. I’ve seen this happen over and over and again in my own life. I expect many of you have as well. Out of deep pain, Print the Love was birthed.  Print the Love travels to under-resourced countries and communities and gives photographs, not takes them. I’ve traveled a ton—I’ve been to the 48 contiguous United States and I’ve lived in or spent time in over 30 other countries. I have seen my fair share of tourists or do-gooders whipping out their cameras and taking a million photos of the people they are visiting. I’ve done a fair amount of this myself, to be honest. Ceallaigh has flipped this on its head and it’s a beautiful thing. They use those Polaroid instant cameras—you know the ones that spit out the photo out immediately—and they give their only copy of that photo to the person they just took the picture of. And for many, this is the only photo they have of themselves. In every way, they are giving the gift of love, joy, self-esteem, empowerment, and so much more.  Follow the work Ceallaigh and Print The Love are doing online and on Instagram.  NOTE: My friend Nicole Devereaux is raising $40,000 in the 40 weeks leading up to her 40th birthday. Amazing idea! Her goal for this week is to raise $2,000 for Print The Love! PTL has a matching grant for $2,000 for their November 15 Give To The Max Day. My dream is for Farafena to set an example of how families like yours, can engage with and get to know families like mine, our communities and our authentic African foods and culture.”    These are the words of my guest today, the brilliant Oumar Barou Togola. Oumar was born in Mali, West Africa but raised in Canada, British Columbia. As Oumar grew up into a person who valued action over talk and someone who wanted to create solutions, he launched Farafena. Farafena which means ‘Africa’ in Bambara, the national language of Mali. Farafena’s vision is simple and compelling—to share healthy, sustainably farmed food with the world, while improving the lives of women farmers and their communities in Africa. They do this by partnering with over 850 African women farmers in nine villages, to bring nutrient-dense, African-grown products to Canadian tables. About 25% of our listeners are from outside the USA. Whether you live in the USA or not, you don’t need me to tell you that America is more divided than ever. We can chat and/or argue all day about why we are more divided than ever but we are not going to focus on those things today. What we are going to focus on is how can people that believe different things and value different things come together to find common ground around food and drink? Right after the inauguration in 2017, three groups came together to launch a project called #100Days100Dinners. Shortly after, this project turned into The People’s Supper. The People’s Supper aims to repair the breach in our interpersonal relationships across political, ideological, and identity differences, leading to more civil discourse. And, they plan to do it in the most nourishing way possible – over food and drinks! As we approach the midterm elections, you can get in on the action. Last weekend, they launched Midterm 5 — a series of suppers they are going to do for the the few weeks leading up there midterm elections. They are doing 5 large suppers in cities and town all over the USA. Even if you can’t make one of those, you can host your own! As a result of the trip he made right after the 2010 earthquake which claimed the lives of over 250,000 people, he started Thread and Team Tassy (which is now known simply as Work). Ian is a truly exceptional leader running these organizations that are changing the world in so many tangible ways. They are damn-givers through and through. Toward the end of our conversation, you’ll hear me state that this podcast would release on September 18. Obviously, it’s not September 18. We bumped this podcast up a few weeks because we wanted to give you more time to check out the Kickstarter they have going on for their new backpack made from 100% recycled canvas. The canvas was made entirely from discarded plastic bottles. I got my hands on one of these backpacks and let me tell you, it’s fantastic. Super functional. Looks great. It’s wonderful. AND we are going to be giving away one of the backpacks they are currently kickstarting! So, follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram because we are going to launch the giveaway later this week. BUT only one of you will win this bag so I’d recommend you back this project on Kickstarter to ensure you get one or two or three or ten at a discounted rate. Go to abetterbackpack.com to learn more about this amazing product! “Teachers, I believe, are the most responsible and important members of society because their professional efforts affect the fate of the earth.” Australian physician and author, Helen Caldicott, said this and I believe it. I have the utmost respect for teachers. They are under-payed, under-appreciated, and over-worked heroes that we should all take much better care of than we currently do. Teachers, you’re amazing! Huge virtual hug to each and every one of you today.  Do you know who else believe the contents of the aforementioned Caldicott quote? Kara Bryant, my guest on the podcast today. She teaches at Village Leadership Academy in Chicago, IL. VLA is an elementary school that offers a “fresh new approach to teaching and learning that includes high lam standards, exposure to world history and geography, appreciation for cultural differences, the development of critical thinking and perspective taking skills, and socially just decision making.” In our conversation, we talk about the challenges of teaching in an urban context, the joys of teaching in an urban context, training tomorrow’s leaders, why she became a teacher in the first place, and so much more. Here’s a link to the #NoCopAcademy train takeover that Chance The Rapper retweeted.  Here is an article from Teen Vogue that featured last year’s GRC—a campaign to redistribute funding in Chicago in favor of underserved communities and schools, rather than on a new $95 million academy for cops.  Here is one (of many!) articles about VLA’s 5th grade class and their GRC. They are trying to rename Douglas Park by adding an “s” which would make the park named after Fredrick Douglass, rather than Stephen Douglas (an abolitionist vs. a slave holder). There’s also a beautiful video about this.  Amazing, right? Kara and the staff at VLA are doing incredible work. I’m so grateful for them and I’m so excited that these children get to be formed under the goals and vision of VLA.  ____________________________ Follow Let’s Give A Damn on Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter to keep up with all that is going on. I rarely watch TV but I definitely make time for Queer Eye. Season 2 came out this summer and I was first introduced to my guest today in the season 2 finale called Make Ted Great Again. The Fab 5 were tasked with helping the Mayor of Clarkston GA…well, look more the part of a Mayor. It was a deeply impactful episode as we got a peek into how diverse, accepting, and unified Clarkston, GA is.  Mayor Ted is currently serving his second term as the Mayor of Clarkston, GA. I’ll be completely honest, y’all. When I think of progressive, diverse, a place where refugees and immigrants are celebrated and accepted, my mind doesn’t immediately go to most places in the South. But this small city of 13,000 people just outside of Atlanta is trying to change the way you and I think about the South. Clarkston boasts “the most diverse square mile in America” where 50% of its residents are foreign-born having moved there from over 50 countries across 6 continents. Amazing, right? In our chat, we talk tolerance, the South, loving your neighbor, conversing with people with whom we disagree, and so much more.  Follow Ted on Twitter and check out the city’s website for more on the history of Clarkston and to see all they’re doing to continue building a beautiful, diverse city! ____________________________ Follow Let’s Give A Damn on Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter to keep up with all that is going on. While many of us were irate and didn’t know what to do to help, Becca and a few other organizations rallied thousands of lawyers in just a few hours to go to airports to assist refugees as they arrived in the US. I was glued to Twitter during those days as these lawyers tirelessly served thousands of refugees. I had no idea Becca Heller was one of the masterminds behind that incredible effort! We discuss the state of farming in America and around the world. I ask the question, “Have you screwed up the earth beyond a point of no return?” Jason gives a grim but hopeful answer. I truly enjoyed my chat with Jason. I hope you’ll listen, become a little terrified, but leave full of hope that we can and should do something about the foods we eat and how we get those foods. Kenny Stubblefield — The Journey from Victim to Survivor to Advocate

The #MeToo movement has given millions of people the courage and a voice to come out and share their own stories of sexual abuse. We’ve seen many powerful men be taken down by this movement. We’ve also witnessed the rise of the #ChurchToo movement—people using up to rightly state that there should be zero tolerance of any kind of sexual abuse within the Church. When Kenny was a teenager, he experienced sexual abuse at the hands of a leader in his church—someone he trusted. He never fully shared his story or allowed himself to heal from the trauma and devastation this abuse brought into his life. During our chat, we talk (trigger warning: we talk in graphic detail several times during our chat) about his story, we talk about his path from to survivor to advocate, he shares practical wisdom from his life and experiences, and he gives us a sneak peek into a documentary he is working on that will shed light on abuse within the Church and will give victims a platform from which they can share their story.  I want to reiterate—we do describe sexual abuse in graphic detail so please proceed with caution. I believe we needed to share the entire story but also wanted to give a fair warning to those that, understandably so, may not be able to handle it. Follow Kenny Stubblefield on Twitter. Hit him up if you have any questions or comments from our chat. If you have harmed yourself, want to harm yourself, or are severely depressed or anxious because of something that has happened to you, please contact one of two organizations that we have previously featured on this podcast: My buddy Jamie Sivrais started A Voice For The Innocent. They provide support for victims of rape and sexual abuse.  Another past podcast guest, Jamie Tworksowski, started To Write Love On Her Arms. They present hope and help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. Follow Let’s Give A Damn on Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter to keep up with all that is going on. World Vision — Clean Water Should Not Be A Luxury

A few weeks ago, I spent a week in Honduras with my friends at World Vision. We met several incredible groups of people but I was especially impacted by the community that now has clean water after 7 years of working hard to get clean water to their community. You heard that right—SEVEN YEARS.  In this podcast episode, you’ll get to listen in on an audio clip between two World Vision team members that I captured while in Honduras, I chat with my friend Matthew Paul Turner (who went on the trip with me) in a Target parking lot, and I chat with Jo Saxton (who hosts a yearly #6KForWater in Minneapolis) after her talk at the most recent Q Conference.  PLEASE join me in Nashville (or whoever you live!) on May 19 for World Vision’s #6KForWater. 6 kilometers is the average distance that people in the developing world walk for water—water that is often contaminated with life-threatening diseases. On Saturday, May 19th, thousands of participants from around the globe will walk or run 6k to bring life-changing clean water to communities in need. Each participant's registration fee provides life-changing clean water for one person, so when you participate in the Global 6K for Water you take that 6K distance away from people in need. If you’d like to join me, get more information and sign up here! I’d love to see you there. If you can’t make it (we’ll miss you!), you can still give toward our goal of raising $1500 to provide clean water to 30 children! Last week, I spent time in Memphis, TN for the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s death. At 6:01pm on April 4, I was at the Lorraine Motel for a moment of silence along with thousands of other people. Al Green was there. Bernie Sanders was there. Fr. Michael Pfleger was there. It was a beautiful, solemn moment. In this episode, I share a bit more about my time there. ICYMI, ICE raided a factory a few days ago and arrested 100 immigrants while they were working. It’s the biggest ICE raid in 10 years. Tragic! My friend Beth Mathews (who has already been on the podcast), returns to the show for a short chat about how she sprang into action to care for the families left without fathers and mothers as a result of the raid. If you’d like to help and can provide transportation, legal services, health counseling, childcare, personal hygiene products, click here for more information. You can also give money by clicking here. They’ve already surpassed their $30,000 goal in a couple of days! The last part of this podcast episode contains special moments that stuck out to me from my conversations with Kareem Manuel, Noor Tagouri, Jeremy Courtney, David Vobora, Beth Mathews, Jeremy Vallerand, Grace Theisen, Kevin Lyman, and Chelsea Clinton.  Lastly, join me in Nashville (or whoever you live!) on May 19 for World Vision’s $6KForWater. 6 kilometers is the average distance that people in the developing world walk for water—water that is often contaminated with life-threatening diseases.
