The Afropolitan will be taking a brief hiatus to re-envision its next steps. Stay tuned for an exciting new chapter! In the meantime, we're sharing our very first episode from October, which focused on how older people in Mali are consuming news on TikTok, and why this symbolizes the larger trends sweeping through the Sahel. In this episode, Catherine Nzuki is joined by Doussouba Konaté, the Country Director of Accountability Lab Mali. We unpack two of these shifts in the Sahel. First, growing anti-French sentiments in the region has led to language decolonization in Mali, in which a growing number of people would rather receive their news in Bambara, one of Mali's national languages, over French. Secondly, growing internet access has connected people across Mali and has brought more visibility to the plight of Malians living in conflict-affected areas. However, as social media usage grows, so too does online misinformation and disinformation.

Originally called "goober peas," boiled peanuts are often referred to as the "Edamame of the South". Whatever you call them, boiled peanuts have been a tradition during family celebrations and social gatherings throughout many parts of the country. It is believed the practice of eating boiled peanuts originated in West Africa, where boiling Bambara groundnut was a staple among African tribes. Boiled peanuts pack a punch in terms of health benefits. They are rich in protein, fiber, and healthy fats. They can help support heart health and aid in weight management by keeping you feeling full longer. Boiled peanuts are loaded with antioxidants, which help reduce inflammation. they are commonly found at roadside stands and sporting events.

In this episode we speak with Professor Randi Gill-Sadler about various published and unpublished works of writers and filmmakers Toni Cade Bambara and Gloria Naylor.  Randi Gill-Sadler is a teacher, scholar, and writer. She received her PhdD in English and her graduate certificate in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from the University of Florida. Her research and teaching interests include 20th century African American and Afro-Caribbean women's literature, U.S. Cultures of Imperialism, and theories of Black diasporic relation and anticolonialism. Her work has been published in Feminist Formations, Small Axe, Radical History Review, and Oxford American magazine. She is currently writing her first book which revisits the Black women's literary renaissance of the 1970s and 1980s  to explore how Black women writers like Paule Marshall, June Jordan, Gloria Naylor, and Toni Cade Bambara reckoned with African Americans' growing conscription into U.S. imperial exploits in their fiction, poetry, and film.  For this discussion Josh talks to Professor Gill-Sadler about how Bambara and Naylor navigated the academy, spaces of cultural production, while maintaining anti-imperialist politics, and putting their skills to work for local movements and causes, while also connecting the local to the international. Mariam Diakite and Erich Huffaker of Orchestra Gold joined us in the studio (photo by Jeff Shaw) this week, treating us to a live song and some insights into their music. The word "fusion" is not used in the sound of this amazing Bay Area band. But psychedelic, rock, brass and masterful guitar work does make a wonderful fusion with Malian music.  From its website: "Orchestra Gold's vibrant sound is spearheaded by the dynamic Mariam Diakite, whose raw, hypnotic vocals deliver heartfelt and thought-provoking lyrics in the highly symbolic Bambara language. While paying homage to Malian musical traditions, this fierce new sound thrives with heavy swinging rhythms, a funky fresh brass section, and cosmic guitar licks. With the January 2023 release of their third album, Medicine, this profoundly spiritual and dance-inducing ensemble continues their pursuit of spreading healing and community through the universal gift of music." Mariam also has dance moves. If you're into dancing, check it out.

Bamako is the capital of the country of Mali, which is the legacy of the Malian empire. This city has seen the likes of Mansa Musa who traded salt for gold and then messed up the whole gold market when he went on hajj and flooded it with gold gifts. People have lived in the city since the paleolithic era. Of course it was also colonized by France during the ransacking of Africa by the European powers. It did make me smile when they dropped French from their official languages. And so today, I'll be attempting the main language Bambara. Abduhl Rahhahman engraved by Thomas Illman, 1833-1834, courtesy of the Library of Congress. Ibrahima Abdur Rahman was born into a royal family in the Futa Jallon region, present-day Guinea. Educated in several centers of Islamic intellectual learning, including Timbuktu, Rahman learned to read and converse in Arabic, and came to speak at least three other languages – Bambara, Mandingo, and Jallonke. Not a first-born son, however, Rahman was then sent by his father for training in military leadership. During battle, around the age of twenty-four, Rahman was captured and sold into slavery. We felt this story we've learned about throughout our travels was worthy of talking about and many more like his. Our journey through Mississippi, and many other states educated us in the rich history that African-Americans share. Hopefully we continue to learn about our history and it makes us into a better version of ourselves every day. You could find the story of Abdurahman on YouTube a series called a Prince among slaves.

This episode takes its name from the first pages of Toni Cade Bambara's novel The Salt Eaters, where healer Minnie Ransom tells activist Velma Henry, “wholeness is no trifling matter.” We join mama, yoga instructor, lover, and Kindergarten teacher Brittney Elyse to talk about what it means to find pleasure in what Bambara calls “the weight of wellness,” when she leaves and then returns as her full(er) self to teaching. Brittney shares her migration story from North Carolina to Massachusetts and back, reflecting on how she began to unlearn unpleasure, uncare, and working to capacity (which Audre Lorde tells us are not the ways of the erotic). We invite you to share your reflections. What is bringing you pleasure and rest this month? Transcript (Finalized Monday, Dec. 4, 2023) The clips from the protest at the end of this episode come from an October 28, 2023 protest in London, UK, calling for a ceasefire in Palestine in solidarity with freedom and protection for Palestinians. Pleasure Muse: Toni Cade Bambara  Tantalizing Trivia:  Born Miltona Mirkin Cade, this author, activist, and professor, changed her name at the age of 6, to Toni. She then added Bambara to honor the West African ethnic group, Bambara.  Her anthology, “Black Woman”, was the first feminist collection to focus on Black women. It included works from her friends Nikki Giovanni, Audre Lorde and Alice Walker.  After the success of her two fiction books, Gorilla My Love and The Salt Eaters, she became a filmmaker, covering topics like the Philadelphia MOVE Bombing and the disappearance of over 40 children in Atlanta.  She believed strongly in clairvoyance, dream analysis, telepathy, and ancestral healing, and wrote about those themes in most of her work.  She died at 56 from colon cancer. Toni Morrison posthumously edited and published her last book, Deep Sightings and Rescue Missions.  Mirror Work: Do a two minute free write, completing the sentence, “The truth is, I…” There's not right or wrong. Just let your truth, about whatever comes from your spirit, flow onto the paper. Now look at yourself in the mirror as you read it out loud. “The Truth is I…” Repeat three times. Look at yourself while you speak and honor the courage that it takes to face our truths head on.  Speak Your Truth: A Playlist  Self-Care Shopping List: Pick up The Salt Eaters for yourself and Gorilla My Love for your pre-teen or teen to read this Summer.  “The dream is real my friend, it's the failure to realize it that's the unreality.” - Toni Cade Bambara  Didn't catch the live recording of today's episode? Africa's first filmmakers boldly revealed how, and why, colonialism lived on after the independences. Sarah Jilani takes a closer look at the works of Ousmane Sembène and Souleymane Cissé. The Malian director's 1982 film Finye (the Bambara word for wind) considers students as the winds of change, whilst Sembène's Mandabi, made in 1968, takes its title from a Wolof word deriving from the French for a postal money order – le mandat postale. Adapting his own novel about the frustrations of bureaucracy, the Senegalese director made the decision to make the film in the Wolof language. Sarah Jilani teaches at City, University of London and was chosen as a 2021 New Generation Thinker on the scheme run by BBC Radio 3 and the Arts and Humanities Research Council which makes research into radio. You can hear her discussing another classic of African cinema on Free Thinking in this episode about Touki Bouki https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0013js4 and Satyajit Ray's Indian Bengali drama Jalsaghar, which depicts a landlord who would prefer to listen to music than deal with his flood ravaged properties https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000v9gj Producer: Torquil MacLeod

On the train, they fall in and out of sleep, reliving shared moments. Then a childhood memory bubbles up to the surface of the protagonist's mind, revealing his complex relationship to the idea of love.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
