Tom Yohe (Hope For Hurting Parents) has returned for a 2nd interview on the Youth Worker On Fire Podcast to discuss his new book called “Moments of Clarity: Wisdom from the Father of a Prodigal”. Yes, Tom and Dena Yohe have been on this podcast before! You can hear more of their story on episode 50 of Youth Worker On Fire Podcast and all about Renee Yohe, their daughter. As well as, a group that started a movement around her story called “To Write Love On Her Arms”. Tom Yohe and his wife Dena Yohe started on this journey when their middle daughter at age 12 started cutting herself. Tom was a pastor at the time. They thought they had everything under control by the time she entered high school. Tom and Dena felt led to join Campus Crusade For Christ (CRU) as staff. They moved their family to Russia for a missions project and not long after, found that their daughter's problems had gotten worse instead of better. They left the mission field and came back to the United States of America, so their daughter could have more therapy and this time it included the parents as well. This episode with Tom will help you even more and his book will be a tool for many parents, youth pastors, educators, and the list goes on and on! For years after their daughter graduated high school, the nightmare continued and for many years as parents they felt lost and not sure what to do next. Tom fills in the blanks of how his family found help through pain and suffering and how you can too. Treatment programs, relapsing, and how the journey continues. Through it all, God is still faithful even through the guilt, embarrassment, and isolation. So listen in to see how that could possibly change after all these years! As we're knit in the womb, a primal cry emerges from the very fact of our being, the very fact of our dependence, the fact of our contingency, the fact of our ultimate need: Do you love me? Jamie Tworkowski, the founder of To Write Love on Her Arms and bestselling author of If You Feel Too Much: Thoughts on Things Found and Lost and Hoped For, joins Evan Rosa for a discussion about the hope and resilience and human identity that emerges from being known and loved; what it means to live a life worth living; his own struggle with mental illness and therapy; the connection between mystery, not knowing, and the sort of surprise that makes life worth another day.In this episode, we talk in some detail about the beautiful and heartbreaking founding story that led Jamie to start To Write Love on Her Arms, which includes references to self-harm and contains an expletive, which in Jamie's words is "more about identity than profanity". And if you are or anyone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, self-harm, or if you need help even right now, call or text 988. 988 is the new nationwide number for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. This episode was made possible in part by the generous support of the Tyndale House Foundation. Jamie never expected to be a mental health advocate. He was working in the industry that had always been his dream career: surfing apparel. But things changed after several days spent taking care of a young woman he didn't know, who was struggling with suicidal thoughts, substance use disorder, and self-harm. Renee had carved the word “fuckup” onto her arms but couldn't get into a treatment facility for several days. Jamie's essay about their time together became a viral sensation on MySpace, which led the way to t-shirt sales to help fund Renee's recovery. From there, the essay became a large, successful mental health advocacy non-profit.Jamie tells that story as well as why he ultimately left TWLOHA, how he perseveres through bleak suicide statistics, and what he's doing about a recent breakup.Visit Jamie's website at JamieTworkowski.com. In the tail-end of this series, we really acknowledge some of the bigger elephants in the room we all face each and every day. And this week's elephant is a big one that likely we've all experienced first hand or with those we love. Mental health disorders have been around for as long as we've been walking the planet, but bringing them out of the dark has been a fairly recent phenomenon. Even as recently as 3 or 4 decades ago, depression and anxiety were rarely diagnosed as clinical disorders, and in previous generations, people with more profound issues that are now treatable were hidden away from society by their families or locked up in institutions. And while there have been huge strides made in the past or so regarding treatment of now commonly diagnosed mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, there is still reticence to recognize its impact and shame taken on by those who deal with it. The time has come to bring these issues out of the dark as we see the growing impact of unchecked mental illness and where it leads for those who don't know where or how to get help. One of the people that's leading the charge toward legitimizing mental health conditions in a bigger way is the founder of To Write Love On Her Arms, Jamie Tworkowski. Jamie founded TWLOHA after guiding a friend through her struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts. He saw the need for guidance in this space and created a world-renowned organization that offers resources and help to those who need it most. Jen and Jamie talk about the painful process of loving our people when they are hurting, how to give our own selves grace when we struggle, and why mental health needs to be treated as seriously as physical health. Content Warning: This episode addresses hard topics including anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation, so it may not be suitable for young listeners or individuals on the path to healing. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! This story is about kindness through the lens of someone hurting and the person helping them find hope in spite of it. In February 2006, Jamie’s life took a 180 when he met Renee Yohe, a young woman who was struggling with addiction, depression, self-injury, and suicidal thoughts. Jamie and Renee spent time together before Renee entered a treatment center. Jamie wrote about his encounter with Renee and, while not having any experience as a writer or blogger, composed a riveting blog post titled “To Write Love on Her Arms.” In 2007, the heartwrenching and compelling story of Renee and Jamie's 5-day encounter turned into a movement and officially became a nonprofit organization. For nearly 14 years, Jamie and his team have responded to over 210,000 messages from all around the world. They’ve also created a FIND HELP Tool on their website. The tool helps people locate free or reduced cost counseling and other mental health resources in their community. The organization’s impact on those who’ve been struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide has been profound. In 2015, Jamie published his book "If You Feel Too Much: Thoughts on Things Found and Lost and Hoped For" and today continues to work at the helm of To Write Love on Her Arms.
