Dr. Shamani Jain is a scientist, clinical psychologist, musician, and founder of the Consciousness and Healing Initiative, who wants to bring about a world where our health doesn't stop and start with a managed care system dominated by the bottom line of pharmaceutical corporations and insurance companies. Her focus is on psychoneuroimmunology and biofield therapies, a catch-all term introduced by the National Institutes of Health to encompass everything from acupuncture to reiki to meditation. Jain's work has shown that the allopathic pill and surgery based approach to well-being often falls short of its ambitious promises - which would be terribly depressing, if not for the fact that so much of our welfare seems to depend a lot on things that are free - rest, communion with others, and a mindful existence. Dawn of an Era of Well-Being: The Podcast

“Coherence in society calls for working together and creating the system where “I” becomes “WE”—where the parts maintain their unique identity while working together to maintain the integral coherence of the whole that they form. This is the principle we obtain from the quantum paradigm. Public policy is the field for the application of this principle. It defines the coexistence of unique but not separate individuals in coherent wholes, whether these wholes are states and nations, or businesses or social and cultural groups.”From page 49 of the book Dawn of an Era of Well-Being by Ervin Laszlo and Frederick Tsao  We are very pleased to be joined today by the scientist, psychologist, and transformational teacher, Shamini Jain, PhD. Dr. Jain is the founder and CEO of the nonprofit Consciousness and Healing Initiative (CHI), a collaborative accelerator of scientists, healers, artists, and educators to help lead humanity to heal themselves. She also serves as adjunct faculty at UC San Diego and is author of Healing Ourselves: Biofield Science and the Future of Health (Sounds True, 2021). We are in the midst of a shifting paradigm in which we can observe concepts that were once thought to have no place in the realm of empirical science, slowly being processed into mainstream thinking. This includes matters that were once deemed to be within the realm of spirituality. Still, however, negative preconceptions in the scientific community continue to persist, and ancient healing arts still tend to be written off as “pseudo-science” without further consideration. Dr. Jain occupies the vanguard of this transition, and she will enlighten us specifically on the roles consciousness and Eastern spirituality can play in healing both our bodies and our minds. This intriguing conversation covers a multitude of topics including how music and aural therapy have been used to treat trauma and anxiety disorders, as well as the related field of biofield tuning—a therapy pioneered and developed by Eileen Day McKusick. Dr. Jain also discusses how her spiritual background as an adherent of the ancient Indian tradition of Jainism helps to shape her outlook. Throughout this episode, Ervin and Fred will help to maintain a focus on the overarching question concerning how we are to think about acts of healing for the “individual” in the context of a universal consciousness, in which the singular and the whole are one in the same—and how this helps us to awaken in an era of Well-Being. Shamini Jain, PhD, is a scientist, psychologist, and transformational teacher.  She is the founder and CEO of the nonprofit Consciousness and Healing Initiative (CHI), a collaborative accelerator of scientists, healers, artists, and educators to help lead humanity to heal themselves. She shares her research and clinical studies about how moving energy through the body with practices like breathwork, meditation, tai chi, and yoga can reduce inflammation and stress, and help us find wholeness within ourselves.  There's actually not a big divide between science and spirituality, and with the help of Dr. Shamini's research, we're moving closer to being able to measure actual positive outcomes from committing to conscious work.      Key Topics/Takeaways: Emotions can affect our physical health [3:03] Calming the sympathetic nervous system to reduce inflammation and stress [8:34] Surrendering as a path to healing [12:26] Skepticism and cognitive dissonance in spiritual and scientific studies [15:08] Enhancing our mind-body-energy connection through conscious healing [24:09] Exploring the biofield in cells and the body [28:03] Placebo effect misconceptions [36:48] Episode summary [51:31]   About Dr. Shamini Jain: Shamini Jain, PhD, is a scientist, psychologist, author and teacher.  She is the founder and CEO of the nonprofit Consciousness and Healing Initiative (CHI), a collaborative accelerator of scientists, healers, artists, and educators to help lead humanity to heal themselves.  She received her BA degree in Neuroscience and Behavior from Columbia University and her Ph.D. from the UCSD/SDSU Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology with a research focus in psychoneuroimmunology. The Global Wellness Summit (GWS) has had many guests across various fields in the wellness industry on Global Wellness Conversations, but our guest today is a first: A visual artist who uses his talent to help people fall in love with nature and be motivated to protect it. We're talking to the famed cinematographer Louie Schwartzberg. Louie's visuals—which you may be familiar with from the likes of Netflix, Disney, or National Geographic—are breathtaking and awe-inspiring, soaring above mountains and oceans and swooping down to see an insect through a drop of water on a leaf or exploring beneath the surface of the ground to see the magical network of mushrooms. He's a pioneer in time-lapse photography as well as altered speed and scale cinematography. His TED Talks have had over 53 million views on YouTube, and his goal is to make the invisible visible, to take us on journeys of time and scale… to change our perspective, touch our hearts, and move us to action. Nancy Davis, GWS executive director, had this to say about Louie: “Louie Schwartzberg is the personification of his life's work. As he captures and shares the unfolding, unimaginable grace of nature, Louie is himself a force of nature and a gift to us all. His intelligence, warmth, humor, and elegant humanity have long been signature elements of the Global Wellness Summit. Whether he's opening our eyes to the universal truth in a drop of rain, urging us to care about the planet by showing us its beauty—not diminishing its assets, or whether he's demonstrating the complex network of fungi that lies beneath our feet, Louie lives a life true to his mission to leave this world better than when he found it.” Louie explains that he is part of the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) Psychedelics & Healing Initiative to help support the exploration of this secret of nature's knowledge. As a leader in the space, Louie discusses how his work is used for a new Visual Healing program in hospitals as well as in psilocybin-assisted therapy for people suffering from addiction and trauma. As he describes working on his Netflix film, Fantastic Fungi, you'll hear how the underground mycelium network is reminiscent of the world wide web. We'll discuss Louie's origin story, what brought him to create moving pictures of nature, and how his 40-year opus, Gratitude Revealed, is really a tribute to his parents who are Holocaust survivors. This conversation not only illustrates why Louie is a part of the GWI and GWS family but also why sustainability and wellness go hand in hand and why each of us should seek out the wonder and awe in the lives we live each day.  To learn more, visit Louie Schwartzberg's site at https://movingart.com/ (MovingArt.com). This week’s episode is all about masks -- the many varied reasons we have for wearing them, the uncertainty many of us felt around them in the early days of the pandemic, and most of all, the very real and intense emotion that often surrounds them. Part 1: In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sean Wellington is reluctant to wear a mask at first — until he discovers an unconventional reason to. Part 2: Dealing with mask-resistant patients prompts pediatrician Ken Haller to reflect on his experience with a past pandemic, and how it has shaped his approach. Sean Wellington lives in Chapel Hill, NC but is at heart a New Yorker, where he grew up. He has been teaching in classrooms and performing on stages for more than two decades (on five different continents!) Last year he founded GRIT: True Stories that Matter, which produces weekly events, ongoing workshops and a weekly podcast by the same name. When he is not immersed in story, he enjoys Cuban salsa dancing and tries to finally learn the damned piano. Ken Haller, MD, is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. He is Past President of the Missouri Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and he has served on the board of the Missouri Foundation for Health. He currently serves on the Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis where he helped to create the new Arts and Healing Initiative to fund arts and medical organizations that utilize the arts to promote health and healing. He is also a writer, actor, and cabaret artist who has performed in cities including New York, San Francisco, Denver, and Chicago, and Ken has twice been named Best St. Louis Cabaret Artist by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He appears regularly in local and national media to advocate for child health, LGBTQ health issues, and the arts, and his special interests include expanding health care for marginalized communities, ameliorating toxic stress in children, and educating the medical community and the general public about cultural competency, health literacy, vaccine hesitancy, the relationship of medicine to the arts, the effects of media on children, and the special health needs of LGBTQ youth. We can chat and/or argue all day about why we are more divided than ever but we are not going to focus on those things today. What we are going to focus on is how can people that believe different things and value different things come together to find common ground around food and drink? Right after the inauguration in 2017, three groups came together to launch a project called #100Days100Dinners. Shortly after, this project turned into The People’s Supper. The People’s Supper aims to repair the breach in our interpersonal relationships across political, ideological, and identity differences, leading to more civil discourse.
