In this episode we speak with The Headstrong Project (https://theheadstrongproject.org), a local non-profit whose mission is to provide active-duty military service members and veterans with mental health services and resources as they deal with trauma. Dr. Amy Williams (https://theheadstrongproject.org/our-team/dr-amy-m-williams/) is the group's Chief Clinical Officer, and Tony Liles (https://www.linkedin.com/in/tony-j-liles/) is a veteran and mental health advocate helping connect other veterans with the group and take advantage of their services. Both are trying to remove the stigma surrounding talking about mental health issues in the military, specifically trauma, and normalize speaking about it openly and getting help when it's needed. We discuss the varying forms of trauma, what PTSD looks like, how to spot signs of PTSD, how to find help, and specifically what resources and support are provided by The Headstrong Project. It's a very vulnerable, honest, emotional, and needed conversation and we were honored to have it. There is truly a mental health crisis across the country among those who have served our country, and they deserve acceptance and support from the other members of a grateful nation. If you or someone you care about is currently serving in the military or are veterans and need help working through trauma and PTSD, please connect them with The Headstrong Project at theheadstrongproject.org (https://theheadstrongproject.org).

Mental Health. It's more than two buzzwords. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Unfortunately, for many of us in the military, it a been a taboo topic. It's been part of our world, but we don't talk about it. For fear of losing our jobs, our clearances, and our identities, we've kept the conversation of mental health quiet. Listen to Olivia Nunn speak to retired Marine Veteran and retired 1st responder Matt Kress. Hey, what's up! It's episode 36 of Payne Points of Wealth. We've got a special guest for you today, Kenny Polcari. He's Managing Partner at Kace Capital Advisors, Chief Market Strategist at Slatestone Wealth, and Managing Director at Campfire Capital. Most importantly, he was one of the most famous stock exchange traders going back to the ‘80s and no one gives you a better tour of the New York Stock Exchange than Kenny! We're going to talk with him about what's going on with inflation, the economy, and investing. On the tipping point, we're going to talk about bonds. Bonds are going down. Do you own bond funds? We're going to let some sunlight in and tell you exactly what you should be doing with bonds. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Is there more inflation coming than our Federal Reserve Chief is telling us? [1:40] Housing prices & interest rates [3:41] Ken’s thoughts on crypto [7:23] Why would we listen to a strategist? [12:26] The Tipping Point [15:32] How bonds work [17:18] The difference between an individual bond and a bond fund [18:19] Hidden Facts of Finance [22:16] Kenny Polcari’s thoughts on inflation Kenny and Ryan seem to agree that there's a lot more inflation coming our way than our Federal Reserve Chief is telling us.  Here are Kenny's thoughts on inflation right now "I've been saying it for a while and I've been writing about it my note and we've been talking about it on television, but you can feel it, right? If you live in this world, if you go out shopping, out to the stores, you can feel the price increases. You can see it. And so therefore I don't need the CPI or some government report telling me that there's no inflation when I go out there and I feel that there's plenty of inflation all around, right? I mean, everybody sees it. Everybody's talking about it but the government doesn't want to admit that we've got it. And so my sense is that it's building and it's building. And it's going to rear its ugly head. It's not going to be temporary and transitory the way that the fed keeps telling us it's going to be. I think we're going to see this spike in the next month or the month after. But then it's going to remain and that's going to change the whole story, the whole fed story, the CPI story, the inflation story, how hot is hot? Define hot? You and I can define it one way. The fed is going to define it a different way to fit their story, to fit their narrative. And that's going to be the part where I think the market's going to have a difficult time and investors are going to have to figure out what's the definition of hot to them. And then what's that mean to valuations?" This week on the tipping point: Bond Funds When you own bonds outright it's simple, you know who you're lending to, you know what they're going to pay you in interest to borrow your money, and you know the set date in the future that they're going to return your money. But when Wall Street packages these bonds into a bond fund it takes away the permanence and definition and that's the big problem with owning a bond fund. Not only does the permanency and definition go away but there's also the question of quality. A prime example is back in 2015, there were a lot of municipal bond funds that were being AAA-rated, meaning they're the highest possible credit rating, that still held Puerto Rican bonds and Puerto Rico defaulted on their debt, which means that the holders of those bonds lost their money. Bonds are good, bond funds...not so much. This week’s hidden facts of finance Exchange-traded funds took in a record $502 billion in investor cash last year. This episode of The Idealcast features the second part of Gene Kim’s interview with Team of Teams coauthor and CrossLead CEO David Silverman and CrossLead Head of R&D Jessica Reif.  In this episode, they take up the topic of how internal marketplaces are structures that can connect mid-level leaders to each other, helping allocate scarce resources to where they're needed most, which enables the further unlocking of capacities. They discuss challenges around the cost of change and the new skills that mid-level leaders need in order to survive and thrive in an era where being functionally excellent in one’s own silo is not enough. They further talk about the similarities between special operations and agile, especially comparing and contrasting terms that further concretize concepts the agile and DevOps community have held for years but struggled to name. And finally, they discuss where we go from here. In this episode of The Idealcast, Gene Kim sits down with Team of Team’s coauthor and CEO of Crosslead, David Silverman, and Director of Research and Development at CrossLead, Jessica Reif, for a two-part interview.  In Team of Teams, David and his coauthors explained how the Joint Special Forces Task Force in Iraq was struggling to achieve its mission, and how they turned it into a success. Their experience led to a deep and critical rethinking of almost everything in US military services and in the commercial industry. Now at CrossLead, David works with Jessica Reif to continue researching and codifying these practices into their management framework. In Part 1 of the interview, Gene and his guests discuss the structure and dynamics of the transformation described in Team of Teams and how these leadership characteristics are needed today in the new ways of working. This leadership framework reinforces the concepts of common purpose, shared consciousness, empowerment, and trust within organizations to help teams work together more effectively in complex environments, particularly when they have to continuously adapt to change. For 14 years Elana Duffy lived with chronic physical and mental pain, the result of injuries sustained from an IED blast and vehicle collision during one of her deployments to Iraq, two years into the war. During that time she had struggled with figuring out exactly what was wrong, and healing enough to continue on with a promising Army career, injury-free. Elana Duffy enlisted in the Army with an Ivy League Masters education and a desire to perform a job where she would see tangible results. But the IED blast and vehicle collision in 2005 would unfortunately inhibit her ability to continue to deploy, even after she had worked her way into selection to an elite Army unit. The invisible wounds of war had caught up with her, and she was medically retired in 2012. But through all of her struggles to figure out what was wrong, Elana Duffy never gave up the fight, both on and off the battlefield. She continued to perform her job at a high level in combat, and found a way to heal once she left the military, up to electively amputating her leg at the calf muscle to finally rid herself of the chronic physical pain. In the end, she also found a way to help others with similar struggles, by starting Pathfinder, a Veteran Service Organization that helps vets connect with local community services that help them reintegrate into civilian life after leaving the military. On today’s episode, Zach and I talk about how the Headstrong Project removes barriers for veterans seeking care, and the impact it’s had for over 1,500 veterans in 7 years.  Learn more about Zach and check out the show notes here. When I first got out of the military I wasn’t sure quite where to go or what to do, I had a plan and I executed it but it wasn’t like it was easy. Waking up one day and the last decade of your life doesn’t really matter anymore. The combat is gone, leading soldiers has vanished, I slept past 5 AM with no feeling of anxiety. I smoked a little weed. I still had an overall feeling of what the hell am I doing? “I'm free, I’m a human again” I exclaimed! Why did I still feel trapped? Why did I feel depressed, isolated, nervous of the future and the present and well the past. I would later on see a therapist, two years too late actually. This started my journey on helping veterans get help, but how do I do that? I started a podcast to reach thousands of people, I made attempts to check on friends from service. I started to connect with projects like Headstrong, Green Beret Foundation, Veterans Community Project, etc. This, I felt was my calling. To get the word out.We sat down with Matt McCoy from the Headstrong Project/Get Headstrong to talk about veteran mental health, the process that they take to help veterans and Matt’s own personal journey with mental health. He secured an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy, setting him on a course to become a combat-tested leader, as the Global War on Terror erupted only a couple of years before he graduated and entered active duty. Since then he has served as a Cavalry Scout, Troop Commander, and military advisor in Iraq and Afghanistan. Cathcart sits down in-studio to reflect on the loss he experienced in combat and the “what-if’s” that changed the course of human lives. He expands on how those events led him to a life of service, helping other veterans through his nonprofit, Mission Roll Call. It’s not too often we get the opportunity to speak with veterans of WWII. They’re a special breed, and Harry Lockhead is no exception. Joining the Navy when his country was at war, Lockhead went into the service as a cook. After the battle at Tarawa, the loss of Marines was so great, that the Navy asked for volunteers to learn how to perform reconnaissance and underwater demolition for future beach landings. Harry volunteered, and became one of the Navy's first Underwater Demolition swimmers, or "Naked Warriors" as they were known. With no instruction manual, Harry and his team of other volunteers had to learn how to clear beach landings in combat, literally by trial and error. Lockhead would eventually become one of the original UDT20 Frogmen, and predecessors of the Navy SEALs. It's an amazing feat, considering the conditions and timeline these men operated under. Staring down a very domesticated life path she had no interest in following, Mary Dague decided to join the Army, a few years after 9/11. She loved being an EOD soldier and showed great promise as a young bomb tech on her team while deployed in combat. But it only took one critical incident to end all of that. On November 4, 2007, her military career came to an end when she literally bear hugged an IED that her team was disarming, when it became unstable in their vehicle, in an attempt to save her teammates' lives. The explosion took both of her arms, but never damaged her spirit and the strength she now calls upon to live each day and inspire and help others who have reached a low point in their lives.
