Today's episode is with peacemaker, author, speaker, and advocate Diana Oestreich and we discuss her book ” Waging Peace” and why this book spoke to me. I select some of my favorite passages of her book that resonated with my experience and is the story of so many active duty and veterans across the world. We discuss how we met and what it's like leaving the wilderness and connecting with others who desire friendship and community. Diana shares what it means to love people and treat people like they actually matter. We delve into the military industrial complex, military culture, and the culture of fear. Diana and I talk about the importance of naming sexual assault, suicide, racism, and other issues we witnessed and/or experienced. Diana Oestreich is a Combat Soldier turned Peacemaker. She heard God's call to love her enemies in the most unlikely place: on the battlefield of the Iraq war. Diana is an Activist, Veteran, Sexual assault nurse, and relentless practitioner of Peace. Whether speaking across the country or in Iran and Iraq or at her son's middle school in Minnesota she empowers us to identify political or religious divides to cross our own “enemy lines” in order to wage peace. Because Justice and Joy can't wait. Diana is the founder of The Waging Peace Project, a movement activating everyday peacemakers to commit acts of courage for the sake of justice + joy, rooted in a relentless belief in the power of love to transform ourselves and the world around us. Her first book was Amazon's #1 New Release in War and Peace. Waging Peace exposes the false divide between loving our country and living out our faith's call to love our enemies–whether we perceive our enemy as the neighbor with an opposing political viewpoint, the clerk wearing a head-covering, or the refugee from a war-torn country. By showing that us-versus-them is a false choice, this book will inspire each of us to choose love over fear. Diana, her partner Jake and their two sons, Bridger and Zelalem live along the shores of Gitche Gumme on unceded Ojibwe land. She is raising her Black son to know his worth and her white son to work for justice. They are an Ethiopian-American family woven together through adoption and a shared love for bad jokes and competitive card games. www.dianaoestreich.com https://www.dianaoestreich.com/waging-peace-project https://www.facebook.com/DianaKOestreich https://www.instagram.com/dianaoestreich Diana's work has been featured on: Government for Grown Ups by Sharon McMahon, For the Love Podcast with Jen Hatmaker, Preemptive Love Coalition, Red Letter Christians, Red River radio, Duluth News tribune, Veterans for Peace, League of Women Voters, American Association of University Women, Duke Endowment, National Rural Assembly, Alworth Center for the study of Peace and Justice studies, Micah Synagogue, Forging Peace Conference, Womens Speakers Collective, Rural Women's Summit, Community College of Denver Military Sexual Trauma Panel and many podcasts across the land.

Preemptive Love stretches across Iraq, Syria, Latin America, the United States, and beyond, working together to unmake violence and create the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible. Today, August 5, 2020, Guru Jagat sat down with Jeremy Courtney, CEO and Co-Founder of Preemptive Love Coalition - a global organization working to bring aid as well as conversation and community to some of the war-torn areas on the planet. With the dust not even settled from yesterday’s blasts in Beirut, Jeremy’s team is on the ground doing what they have done since 2007: bringing food, providing shelter and starting the conversation so communities can heal and connect. In this critically relevant and deeply soulful conversation, Guru Jagat and Jeremy talk about starting his work in Iraq with a new baby in the midst of the war, getting beyond a “hero” self-concept, what it means to heal in intense unrest, and why you “love anyway.” Listen now.
Most of us think we already know what the Lord's Prayer is all about. But most of us are wrong. So wrong. Let us set you sinners straight. Plus, Jeremy Courtney, from Preemptive Love Coalition, is our Heretic of the Week!

In this report the “Firestarters,” six women from around rural America, share stories of personal struggles and community victories as they work to build up and strengthen their home regions. The Firestarters spoke at the closing session of the Rural Women’s Summit, where over 200 women from throughout the nation came together in Greenville, SC, on October 27-29. The summit was designed to encourage and support rural women leaders, who often are on the front lines of community action but may not have the traditional titles, respect and resources of community leaders. Anna Claussen, a Minnesota farm girl and founder of Voices for Rural Resilience, introduces the Firestarters, and Diana Oestrich, Iraq War veteran and key relationships officer for the Preemptive Love Coalition, provides closing remarks. The Rural Women’s Summit was produced by the National Rural Assembly, part of the Center for Rural Strategies, which also publishes the Daily Yonder. #RuralWomenLead
This week's episode features a discussion about the new film about the organization Preemptive Love. Jeremy and Jessica started Preemptive Love Coalition during the middle of the Iraq War in in 2008. Over the past decade they have been a non-profit on the front lines, providing relief and serving and working for peace in conflict rich areas of Iraq, Iran, Libya, Syria, Palestine and Israel, Korea and at the Mexico/U.S. border. Recently a short documentary was released that features their story and the work they do. My friend Charity hosted a viewing event to share this film with our community. We sat down to chat about what stood out to us about this documentary and to encourage you all to take a half an hour this week and watch it for yourself. Preemptive Love is doing some tremendous work and we want people to know about it. First and foremost, watch this short film about Preemptive Love! And check out Preemptive Love's work, follow them on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Babies begin to notice race at six months old. Children are paying attention. And as we’ve learned this season, what they hear the adults in their lives say and do—or not say and do—deeply influences the people they are—and who they’ll become. Rapper and Preemptive Love's artist-in-residence Propaganda (Jason Petty), and his wife, university professor Dr. Alma Zaragoza-Petty, both of the Red Couch Podcast, join us for a candid conversation about parenting and talking to kids about race. In this episode, Propaganda and Alma share their experiences growing up as people of color, share ways they've talked about race and peacemaking with their children, and speak into what they want white parents to know about humility and allyship. Learn more.
How much should kids be involved in shaping our communities? Should we shield children from news about violence and war? In this episode, we attend a vigil with the Oestreich family, who believes community involvement is a core family value. Diana Oestreich has been the key relationships officer with Preemptive Love for nearly four years. Before that, Diana was a combat medic in the Iraq War. Her experience as a veteran shapes her views on everything, including how she and her husband Jake raise their kids Zelalem and Bridger. What does their commitment to showing up for their community look like? Recently, Diana and her sons joined their community at a local Lights for Liberty event, a vigil for children seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border, and they let us come along with them for this episode. Learn more.
Can kids be peacemakers? Preemptive Love founders Jeremy and Jessica Courtney share how living in Iraq has influenced how they raise their children. With host Erin Wilson, they explore how culture, technology, and war changed their perception of parenting—and invite us all to enter into difficult conversations with the young people in our lives. Their kids, Emma (14) and Micah (11), dive into their perspectives on growing up in Iraq, sharing thoughts on violence, media, and what makes home to them. Kids are often shielded from bad things, but what happens when that’s not possible? This episode also includes a call with Molly Goen, a teacher who confides what students taught her after they survived a traumatic act of violence in an Iraqi classroom. Young people absorb more than we might imagine, and they understand more than we may assume. When we examine what it looks like to love anyway, we often come up with complicated answers. But ask a kid in your life what it means to love anyway, and you might be surprised at the depth even simple responses bring to the conversation.
In the aftermath of September 11, Jeremy Courtney of Preemptive Love Coalition moved to the Middle East to serve in the midst of chaos and violence that would make most of us run the other way. Instead, his family chose to move toward the devastation, to be neighbors. Jeremy joined us on our Inside Giving podcast several months ago to give us an up-close and very personal look from the neighborhoods that are on the front lines in Syria and Iraq, where war and violence had destroyed whole towns "street by street by street." But, Jeremy says, “Violence doesn’t get the last word. We do. It seeks to drive us apart through fear. That’s why we have to show up on the front lines of conflict and love anyway.”
What makes home feel like home? As our work has shown us, restoring homes ruined by war is a first step to bringing whole communities back to life. Preemptive Love co-founder Jessica Courtney shares stories of her Iraqi and Syrian friends who have been displaced and are now remaking their homes. We also hear never-before-heard stories from the field, as Jessica shares her experiences of visiting homes that are being built after being destroyed by war. Learn more.
Most of us have a very Western idea of what it means to be a millennial. But we’re all more than stereotypes. We categorize each other into neat and tidy labels because, well, it’s easy. It’s a way to organize cultural ideas. Our social constructs act a way to help us try to understand the world. In this episode, we set those stereotypes aside for a minute and ask: What does life look like for the roughly 7 million millennials—women and men between the ages of 23 and 38—in Iraq? On Episode 5: The Millenials of Iraq, we find out. And if your primary picture of Iraq is what you've seen on TV, you might be in for a surprise. Learn more.
When we’re afraid, we build walls around ourselves. We yearn for protection. To feel safe. We hem ourselves in. And keep others away. But what happens when our felt safety comes at a cost? What happens when our fear of “the other” contributes to others not being protected...or safe? Who is “the other," anyway? How do we start deconstructing the walls around our hearts? Learn more.
How do we move past fear? Travel with producer Kayla Craig and her pastor husband Jonny as they visit a mosque in the middle of Iowa. Saadia Qureshi, Frontline Coordinator with Preemptive Love, shares her experience as a Muslim woman, chatting with Kayla about what to expect when visiting a mosque. Kayla talks with Shahed, a leader from their local Islamic Center, about why the mosque decided to host an open house for their community. And Preemptive Love editor Kim Mireau visits a Friday prayer service in Indiana with other non-Muslim friends Shannan Martin and Laura Pontius. We also hear from artist Propaganda, who confides his past hesitations about visiting a mosque. Learn more.
It’s easy to say love anyway. It’s a lot more challenging to live it. We might not all come face-to-face with a literal enemy who wants to kill us, but we all have chances to risk something on behalf of another, by stepping out in love, every single day.In this episode, we ask the questions: Is love worth the risk? And what does it really look like to love your enemy? In episode 1, we told you about the night our friends Sadiq and Ihsan nearly died delivering aid in the Iraq desert—one at the hands of ISIS, and the other when he was targeted by coalition air strikes, mistaken for ISIS. In this episode, "The Enemy," we share the story-behind-the-story: What happened just days before that longest night in the desert? It’s a true story almost too hard to imagine. Because when Sadiq stayed with the delivery trucks, it wasn’t the first time his life was affected by a close encounter with ISIS.
Writer, Speaker and Key Relationships Officer at the Preemptive Love Coalition, Diana Oestreich joins us for a conversation on what love actually looks like in public. In this Episode, we'll dive deep into how to respond to the big issues we see invading our twitter feeds and news channels every day.
Life, homelessness, community, war, veterans affairs, life on the front lines, who Jesus is, who we are meant to be... seriously, we talk about everything on this little episode. This past weekend, my family and I attended a vigil in Nashville to mourn the loss of the 50 men, women, and children who died in their place of worship in New Zealand. Muslims, Jews, and Christians gathered together to comfort our Muslim brothers and sisters and also to re-commit to pursuing a peace-filled world together. It was beautiful. There was a local muslim leader that led parts of the vigil. Towards the end, she shared some ideas for how non-muslims can help dispel the widespread fears surrounding Muslims and Islam—otherwise known as Islamophobia. I found her ideas helpful and I was glad to know that I was already doing some of them. And I look forward to finding ways to implement the others. Here are two of her ideas: Meet a Muslim. It’s important to get to know about Islam from a Muslim. If you don’t know any Muslims living around you (I guarantee most of you do), google your local mosque. I’ve been to a few mosques and I’ve always been welcomed with open arms. And I know they’d be happy to meet you and to help you learn more about Islam. Partake in local activities led by Muslims. Muslims are very active in the community so I’m sure there will be many ways for you to get involved. Let me know if you end up taking this advice seriously. I’d really love to know about budding relationships and partnerships happening amongst the Let’s Give A Damn family as a result fo this tragedy. My guest today is Diana Oestreich. My goodness, Diana, is amazing! She is a war veteran, a sexual assault nurse examiner, a justice advocate, a recovering racist, AND the Key Relationships Officer at Preemptive Love Coalition. "Violence unmakes the world, but preemptive love has the power to unmake violence." Jeremy Courtney is the founder and CEO of the Preemptive Love Coalition, which brings relief to families fleeing war in Syria and Iraq. They help refugees rebuild their lives. And we provide lifesaving medical care for children in conflict zones. Jeremy and his wife Jessica moved to New York City just after 9/11, then to Istanbul, and finally to Iraq during the Iraq War in 2006. Their story is less heroic than it is humble; they have simply fallen in love with the Iraqi people, so they are in it for the long haul because in their words, the Iraqi people are "our people." Enjoy. Become a monthly sponsor of Preemptive Love. Read Jeremy's book, Preemptive Love. Read Jeremy's article in the Washington Post: The World is Scary as Hell. Love Anyway.

In the heart of conflict, there is only one kind of love big enough to change a nation: a love that strikes first. Jeremy Courtney is the founder of Preemptive Love Coalition, a development organization that works across Iraq providing lifesaving surgeries for children and more recently responds to the daily needs of those living in the shadow of ISIS. He is also the author of Preemptive Love, a book that invites you to walk along the front lines of the struggle for peace with Jeremy in a firsthand account of his team's quest to mend hearts and save lives in the world's most notorious war-torn country. Jeremy hosts conversations about peacemaking and Muslim-Christian relations and shares stories of love and hope from the front lines of Syria and Iraq, where he has lived for over a decade with his wife and two children.
We're in the middle of the largest refugee crisis since World War II, and it's easy to feel overwhelmed by what is happening all over the world. As we consider how we can respond both in action and in awareness, we hope you're encouraged by these two conversations with Richard Stearns of World Vision and Jeremy Courtney of Preemptive Love Coalition.
Today Preston is talking with Jeremy Courtney, who is the President & Founder of Preemptive Love Coalition. If performing heart surgery isn't difficult enough, try doing it in the war-torn country of Iraq. Jeremy Courtney is the executive director of Preemptive Love Coalition, a non-profit that provides medical training for Iraqi physicians and heart surgeries for children in Iraq. He makes a compelling case for extending a helping hand first and asking questions later. In the process of mending hearts, he is mending cultural discord, unmaking violence, and living out the call of Jesus to be a peacemaker.
