Maybe you will find such situations less stressful if you can face them knowing that the words obdurate, dour, endure, and durable are etymological kissing cousins. All trace back to the Latin adjective durus, which means “hard.”

The Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has this morning finally acknowledged that there is a cost of living crisis, and she's indicated the Government will announce some kind of relief, presumably at the petrol pump.She was able to choke out the C-word today - crisis; despite refusing to concede there was one just a few days ago. And this was probably so as not to be seen as buying into National's narrative. Christopher Luxon was the one who coined the 'cost of living crisis' phrase and he's been hammering that at the Government in the house. But by refusing to acknowledge it, by refusing to concede that such a thing was even possible under her leadership, despite the fact that many of the contributing factors are beyond to control, it may do look out of touch and obdurate in not conceding just how hard so many families are doing it right now. People are doing it incredibly tough. They are going to be doing it tough for a long time yet. And if the Government can do something to alleviate that, then they must.

The Latin root dur means “hard.” This Latin root is the word origin of a good number of English vocabulary words, including endure, during, and duration. The prefix ob-, besides meaning “against” or “towards,” can also act as an intensive prefix. An intensive prefix can effectively be translated as “thoroughly” to highlight its emphatic function. The intensive nature of the prefix ob- shows up in such words as obtuse and obdurate. For Luther, faith and its benefits is not something that is ready to fly away at any moment if we have a wrong thought or second of doubt. It is the daily working of the Holy Spirit in us. Obdurate sin is what moves against the promise. Faith in the promise is to desire what is promised and the forgiveness of sins. Faith is not something that we lose just because we are still the old man who has sin in his life. Consider the Formula of Concord. For Luther, to lose this is nothing more than willful rejection. It was not meant to cause anxiety because every day faith was a gift and the Holy Spirit will do the work of keeping us united to Christ. Luther ends the first section on preaching. There are three ways to preach Christ incorrectly according to Luther. Explore what Luther said about the affects of preaching in the right way. There is a need to be critical of our preaching and to preach Christ for you and for me.
