As the vibrant pulse of Nairobi's urban landscape continues to redefine African electronic music, Wayo brings a raw, open-air energy straight to your speakers in this special recorded episode. As a visionary DJ, producer, and co-founder of CBDeep, the platform transforming city streets and historic skylines into thriving dancefloors, Wayo seamlessly bridges melodic electronic rhythms with deep African percussion and enchanting basslines, crafting a hypnotic groove designed for both the daily commuter and the late-night clubber. This sonic journey opens with the atmospheric frequencies of Iborian, D-Malice, and L.A Dave on "Selina [m3]," before locking into the dancefloor vibe with the hypnotic, groove-heavy anchor of Masšh & Ninae's "Hold Me Down." The energy intensifies with Wayo's own exclusive, locally-rooted weapon "Sioni Njerae (Wayo bootleg)," transitioning smoothly into the driving rhythms of 104 BPM and Village Guru on "Nang' Egijima." Storytelling takes center stage during the spellbinding collaboration of Pa Ngu and Wayo on "Kal El," which gives way to the bold, unapologetic beats of Octavez on "We Don't Play the Same Afro." The mix then hits a high-octane peak, unleashing pure Nairobi underground flavor with the heavy-hitting Dylan-S and Aahil remix of Buruklyn Boyz and Silverstone Barz on "JABANATION (Foozak & Ed-Ward Remix)." The spiritual depth deepens as Gumz and TekniQ guide listeners toward the "Promised Land," followed closely by another massive self-produced anthem, "TELL ME (Wayo bootleg)." Striking a powerful, rhythmic climax, the mix cuts deep with Eli Fola's commanding "Haaa!" before culminating in a triumphant finale with Da Capo's legendary "Afrika" featuring Tshepo King. From the bustling streets of Nairobi to global airwaves, this is Wayo in full creative power, bringing electronic music directly to the people 1. Iborian x D-Malice x L.A Dave - Selina 2. Melissa Auf der Maur's new memoir, Even the Good Girls Will Cry: A '90s Rock Memoir(DaCapo, 2026) is a remarkably open-hearted, clear-eyed memoir of the '90s Alternative era by the bassist of Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins Even the Good Girls Will Cry begins with Auf der Maur's bohemian upbringing in Montreal, where her early, deep connection to art and music gave her entry to the colorful and thriving local creative scene. Working as a cassette DJ and ticket girl, she would see (and sometimes meet) the luminaries who'd pass through town--Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, Pavement, Sonic Youth. Thanks to a thrown beer bottle and a long-shot fan letter to a PO Box, her band Tinker scored a life-changing opening slot for The Smashing Pumpkins and, sensing her natural talent on bass, Billy Corgan recommended her to Courtney Love, just one of the many uncanny threads that weaves destiny throughout this riveting memoir. Whisked from her local scene and thrust into the eye of a hurricane of grief on a global stage, Melissa joined Hole for the band's 1994 Live Through This world tour just after the deaths of Kurt Cobain and Hole's prior bassist, Kristen Pfaff, with Courtney Love at the center of it all. It was a tour of passionate intensity, as a chaotic yet stunningly powerful band constantly threatened to spin out of control. Melissa brings the reader with raging intimacy into the action, offering a heroic portrait of the unforgettable Courtney Love as she howled into the darkness as if to keep grief at bay. That was only the beginning of Melissa's journey through alternative rock. Part rock memoir, part travel diary, part psychedelic scrapbook, Even the Good Girls Will Cry is a behind-the-scenes rock 'n' roll memoir with a soulful intimacy and mystic undertone that sets it apart from memoirs by her peers. It is a vivid dispatch from the last analog decade, artistically capturing that bygone era in all its messy, angsty glory. Learn more about your ad choices.

SynopsisToday, some “off-the-cuff” remarks about the role of shirt cuffs in music history.Starched, button-on, detachable cuffs for men's shirts were very popular from the early 19th through the early 20th centuries, and could serve as a sort of white linen Post-It note if a melody suddenly popped into the head of a composer. Like Dvořák, say, out for a walk along the Turkey River in Spillville, Iowa — he could scribble the tune down on his shirt cuff, assuming he carried a pencil, that is, since writing it in ink before the era of ballpoint pens would not be very practical and certainly not be very popular with whoever did the composer's laundry!Years after Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 3 had its premiere — on today's date in 1912 — the Danish composer still recalled the moment when a theme in its third movement came to him. “I was standing on the back of a tram. And [the theme] came with such urgency that I had to quickly jot it down, partly on a scrap of paper I had in my pocket, and partly on one of my shirt cuffs,” Nielsen said. Send us a textThis episode is all about the seminal punk band The Raincoats. Al is joined by The Raincoats' co-founder Gina Birch and by author/journalist Audrey Golden, who wrote Shouting Out Loud: Lives of The Raincoats, which was published by Da Capo this July. Gina discusses how the album marked an important period in her career as a musician, and she delves into her contributions on several of the album's tracks. Audrey also explains how she wound up writing a book about The Raincoats. Today on the program, we present the story behind the Father of Soul, Sam Cooke. Growing up in the church, Sam knew he wanted to be a singer by the time he was five years old. There was a magnetic and infectious quality to this young Gospel singer, and he knew he was destined for bigger things than singing sacred music. The risk he took in becoming a pop singer was massive, but it produced the first records of what is now known as Soul music. Sam also was a pioneer when it came to being savvy about the music business, owning his own publishing company, negotiating contracts, and creating a container to nurture up and coming soul singers. At the height of the civil rights movement, and the pinnacle of his career, Sam's life was cut short. Here is his story. __ Support Educational Programming: Tax-Exempt Donations Join the Patreon Community One-time donations: Venmo or PayPal Follow American Songcatcher on Instagram Credits: Jonah Nordeen - Research, Writing Teddy Chipouras - Editing Nicholas Edward Williams - Production, Editing, Recording and Distribution References: Campbell, L.
