Germany's conservatives are celebrating after the country's snap election. Friedrich Merz is most likely to become the country's next chancellor. His centre-right Christian Democratic Union has topped votes at just under 29%, with far-right Alternative for Germany, AFD, inching more than 20%. Merz must now form a coalition, but has ruled out working with AFD. Director of Berlin's Global Public Policy Institute, Thorsten Benner told Andrew Dickens the only option is for the CDU to govern with the outgoing Social Democrats. He says it's one of the better outcomes, as only a two-party coalition is necessary. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tyler Benner: It Feels Easy When you do it Right - Ep156 This episode is a conversation with Tyler Benner from Strong Feet Athletics. Tyler was a member of the US National Archery team for about a decade, and a lifelong athlete. He has spent the last 10 years making the world's first barefoot style cycling shoe that is mass produced. They just started shipping the first model, The Leviathan, about a week ago as of the time of this recording. They generously sent me a pair to test although they only arrived a few days ago, so I haven't had a chance to ride in them just yet. That said, the fit is very much shaped like my foot and I am excited to give them a try in the wild. Tyler describes part of his inspiration for making the shoes was listening to Phil Liggett commentating for the Tour and talking about riders “dancing on the pedals” when climbing out of the saddle. We speak about the importance of training feet and ankles to be strong and stable, and how this is important in all athletics. Tyler's experience as an archer led him to discover the significance of the conditioning and tone of his feet, and how it impacted his ability to hit the center of the target. I am sure you will find his journey insightful. Links: Strong Feet Athletics Website ►► https://www.strongfeetathletics.com/

Dave Benner is a historian, author, and contributor to platforms like The Tenth Amendment Center, Mises Institute, and the Abbeville Institute. He has penned books such as Thomas Paine: A Lifetime of Radicalism, Compact of the Republic: The League of States and the Constitution, and The 14th Amendment and the Incorporation Doctrine. Dave's unique and optimistic perspective shines through as he shares how history, decentralized systems, and grassroots efforts can be leveraged to create real change. We close on a white pill, discussing solutions for ensuring the mass awakening continues and how exposing corruption, even rhetorically, plays a vital role in challenging the status quo. Jennifer Benner is a master gardener, book author, and former editor at Fine Gardening magazine. I challenged her with the idea of gardening as a craft, and the result is this interview. This peaceful escape that Jenny jokes she is addicted to has given her more than a career and a living. We talked about how gardening changed her as a person, how the beauty of an object comes from the effort we've put into making it, or participating in its creation. There is a world of difference between understanding a garden as a service, or a product, and as a process. Much more comes from gardening than the garden itself. Enjoy!

Democracy is a living, breathing thing and Dr. Erica Benner has spent a lifetime thinking about the role ordinary citizens play in keeping it alive: from her childhood in post-war Japan, where democracy was imposed on a defeated country, to working in post-communist Poland, with its sudden gaps of wealth and security. Adventures in Democracy: The Turbulent World of People Power (Penguin, 2024) draws on her experiences and the deep history of self-ruling peoples – going back to ancient Greece, the French revolution and Renaissance Florence – to rethink some of the toughest questions that we face today. What do democratic ideals of equality mean in a world obsessed with competition, wealth, and greatness? How can we hold the powerful to account? Can we find enough common ground to keep sharing democratic power in the future? Challenging well-worn myths of heroic triumph over tyranny, Dr. Benner reveals the inescapable vulnerabilities of people power, inviting us to consider why democracy is worth fighting for and the role each of us must play. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Send us a textIn this episode of the Incubator "At the Bench," we speak with Dr. Eric Benner, a neonatologist and physician-scientist at Duke University. Dr. Benner shares his path from an MD-PhD student with a background in Parkinson's research to a passionate neonatologist driven by personal experiences in the NICU after his twin sons were born prematurely. He describes how these experiences inspired him to dedicate his career to studying neurologic outcomes in preterm infants, focusing on neural stem cells and ways to improve outcomes for children like his son who has faced neurologic challenges. Dr. Benner discusses his pioneering research on oxysterols in breast milk, which activate neural pathways, particularly the sonic hedgehog pathway, to promote brain development in preterm infants. His journey includes navigating the patent process, founding a biotech company, and persisting despite initial skepticism from the pharmaceutical industry. He emphasizes the importance of mentorship and collaboration, sharing practical advice for budding physician-scientists. Dr. Benner also highlights the need for palliative care in neonatology, inspired by his wife's work in palliative medicine, as an integral component of compassionate care in the NICU. California's Salton Sea region is home to some of the worst environmental health conditions in the country. Recently, however, it has also become ground zero in the new “lithium gold rush”—the race to power the rapidly expanding electric vehicle and renewable energy storage market. The immense quantities of lithium lurking beneath the surface have led to predictions that the region could provide a third of global demand. But who will benefit from the development of this precious resource? Join us as Chris Benner and Manuel Pastor, authors of the new book Charging Forward, show that the questions raised by Lithium Valley lie at the heart of the “green transition.” They weave together movement politics, federal policy, and autoworker struggles, stressing that getting the lithium out from under the earth is just a first step: the real question is whether the region and the nation will get out from under what they say has been the environmental degradation, labor exploitation, and racial injustice that have been as much a part of the landscape as the Salton Sea itself. What happens in Lithium Valley, the authors argue, will not stay there. This tiny patch of California is a microcosm of the broad climate challenges we face; Benner and Pastor argue that understanding Lithium Valley today is the key to grasping the future of our economy and our planet. About the Speakers Chris Benner is the director of the Institute for Social Transformation and the Everett Program for Technology and Social Change at UC Santa Cruz, where he is also the Dorothy E. Everett Chair in Global Information and Social Entrepreneurship and a professor of environmental studies and sociology. Listen to your Mind, Body and Spirit Your Body is a Team Player Episode 227 (Mara is based in Virginia, USA) In this conversation with Mara Benner we explore: How to better connect with our own body, mind and spirit Why outside communication starts with inside communication Emotional intelligence is more than only emotions and intelligence How to prepare yourself for challenging conversation How to mitigate imposter syndrome How to balance body, mind and spirit How are we communicating to ourselves About our guest, Mara Benner: Mara worked for 25 years in corporate and nonprofit leadership roles. At one time she worked for the CEO of a $2 billion healthcare company. She has learned how various cultures have combined health, wellness and the min-body-spirit connection. She studied Qigong in China with the masters. You can arrange for a 30 minute, no-charge, no-obligation consultation with Mara at https://truenorthexecutivecoaching.com/ ----- Excerpts from this conversation with Mara Benner: Your body is a team player with you. And when I say that to leaders, there's a pause. There's that ache that I've been having, that pain that I've been having. I didn't think of as the body being a team player with me, but it is, and you can get to optimal performance, mind, body and spirit when you work on all these different aspects. ----- And I'll say one other thing that I think is fascinating about this is those leaders who have done an amazing job of working on the mind, body and spirit, also tap into the ability to create at a whole new level, for innovation and for new approaches, and with time speeding up on how quickly companies have to move and engage in new, innovative approaches for products or services, that ability as a leader, to tap into that creative aspect for the vision of the company and the organization is more important than ever. ----- But we come back to a state of homeostasis, which is our natural place to be. And when we're balanced, when our mind and body and spirit are all in a balanced state, the body is able to optimally heal and be at optimal performance, which helps a leader out. And so again, whether it's yoga or Qigong, or any of these approaches meditation, but it could be also, and this is what I think is really interesting, is for every leader, it's very different as to how they best come back into the state of homeostasis. So for some it might be going for a run that helps them come back to that state of true balance. When I was in China to go to your point, what I realized is this concept that has always been there of what we call whole person care, which is we are not separated. Our bodies aren't separated from our mind. Aren't separated from our spirit. It's all one in the same. And we get used to in our healthcare culture right now, we get used to thinking that things are separated out, that one does not impact the other, and that's actually not true. They're all completely part of the whole so when a doctor says to a patient, this is this illness is stress related, often that person walks out of the doctor's office and may not know what to do with that, like, what? So now do I do if it's stress related? What does that look like? ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by honing your communication skills. The immense quantities of lithium lurking beneath the surface have led to predictions that the region could provide a third of global demand. But who will benefit from the development of this precious resource? A work of stunning analysis and reporting, Charging Forward: Lithium Valley, Electric Vehicles, and a Just Future (The New Press, 2024) shows that the questions raised by Lithium Valley lie at the heart of the “green transition.” Weaving together movement politics, federal policy, and autoworker struggles, noted experts Chris Benner and Manuel Pastor stress that getting the lithium out from under the earth is just a first step: the real question is whether the region and the nation will get out from under the environmental degradation, labor exploitation, and racial injustice that have been as much a part of the landscape as the Salton Sea itself. What happens in Lithium Valley, the authors argue, will not stay there. This tiny patch of California is a microcosm of the broad climate challenges we face; understanding Lithium Valley today is the key to grasping the future of our economy and our planet. One of the most pressing questions facing the peer-to-peer (P2P) fundraising industry is, "How do we better engage the next generation of fundraisers?"With each generational shift, it can be daunting to understand the motivations of the emerging group and adapt to their preferences. Their expectations for transparency, community and social responsibility demand that P2P programs move beyond cookie-cutter fundraising approaches, focusing instead on building trust, fostering meaningful connections, and empowering personal autonomy. In this episode, Marcie Maxwell sits down with Laurie Benner, the Interim VP, Signature Programs at the Canadian Cancer Society, to chat about the organization's fastest growing P2P campaign, Relay For Life Youth Program. Together, they discuss how and why the organization has placed a strategic emphasis on the Gen Z & Young Millennial demographic and dig into the unique lessons learned about youth volunteers, including communication preferences and messaging. This episode also covers:Building trust with youth volunteersHow to harness unique skills of unique volunteersIdentify the right staff partners to work with this demographicMentioned LinksRelay For Life CanadaCanadian Cancer SocietyInstagram: @YouthRelayStay Connected on LinkedInConnect with LaurieConnect with MarcieConnect with the Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum (00:00) - Welcome to The P2P Soap Box (01:21) - Introducing Laurie Benner at the Canadian Cancer Society (05:32) - Addressing the Youth Market (20:30) - Finding the Right Staff (23:24) - Learn More and Get Involved!
