The Human Immune System Basics In a time of a Covid pandemic, and the rapid development of several life-saving vaccines to address it, the world has seen the possibilities that vaccines offer. But none of this has come without something unexpected given the hundreds of thousands who have died; vaccine hesitancy. One of the primary drivers for the last 20+ years of oropharyngeal cancers has been a virus, HPV. In 2006 a vaccine was made available in the market that will prevent HPV infections in the future generation that gets vaccinated now as children. Here in our head and neck/oral cancer world, there was also a huge opportunity, marred by some vocal anti-vaccine voices that have held back, through disinformation, the full potential of this cancer-preventing technology. OCF decided that we needed not just to argue with those in opposition to all vaccines, but to educate people with solid, science-based information so that they would feel more secure protecting their children while the pre-exposure window existed to use the vaccine. This task means that first, we have to ensure that individuals have a working understanding of the immune system itself, second that they understand how it protects us from various threats, and third what we can do to educate the immune system about threats it needs to recognize and protect us, pre-infection....ie through the use of a vaccine. Hesitancy or uncertainty about vaccination can only be eliminated through a thorough understanding of it, not arguing against people who want to fight through the use of disinformation campaigns and lies. Armed with facts, the decision to be vaccinated is much easier. This first of three podcasts will give the listener a sound understanding of how our immune system works, how it defines what is a threat, and what components of it are put into action to protect us. To do this well we have enlisted the help of OCF's long-time friend and colleague, Dr. Ross Kerr from NYU to act as the OCF moderator for this episode, and he has chosen Dr. David Levy as his well-versed and informed partner in the discussion. Dr. Levy has been working in the area of immune system research for decades. It is a privilege to have both of these distinguished doctors on this podcast. We would like to mention that this podcast was produced by the Oral Cancer Foundation in partnership with our long-term partner in many endeavors, The American Academy of Oral Medicine. CSE Curriculums mislead students to trust contraception, but the Medical Accuracy is bogusCondoms, touted in all CSE curriculums cannot provide complete protection. Why? Condoms are only being used correctly about 1 time in 5, only 20%. In addition, it is common knowledge STD infections such as HPV and syphilis are still infectious despite condom use, with overall true STD infection rate of 70-80%.   Curriculums do not warn young girls/women of their high risk for STDs. The immature cervix has only 1 cell layer, putting females at particular vulnerability to infection. PRIE has concern regarding male and female student experimentation with anal sex, believing it is “safe,”  What they are NOT told about is the high risk for infection, tears, and fissures, and bowel incontinence. The fact condoms are not created for anal sex, and commonly break, is replaced with the lie that using a condom assures students' safety.Recent statistics for Washington state show the Chlamydia and Gonorrhea infection rate of young girls ages 15-19 is at almost epidemic levels today. What's the risk? When it's you, it's 100%.Again, why are students encouraged to practice oral sex as a form of safe sex, when the Oral Cancer Foundation states 26 million Americans are infected daily with oral HPV virus, and a dramatic increase in oral cancer caused by HPV16 is occurring among young adults? The UK Lords and Commons Family and Child Protection Group find that their version of CSE, Relationships and Sex Education, has not slowed the increase of STDs. In addition there has been an alarming increase of self-mutilation, and a 169% increase in suicides for adolescents aged 15-19 is occurring from 2010-2015.Even though Schools in our urban centers have been using the CSE curricula for some time, STD rates and suicides continue to rise.According to the CDC, since CSE was introduced in Washington state the rates of oral cancers and STIs in youth 15-25 have skyrocketed. CSE explains the most common STIs (gonorrhea, and chlamydia) can live on parts of the body not covered by a condom, therefore one is at great risk of contracting an STI even when using a condom.Usually, there is no mention of dangers associated with anal sex; incontinence, anal tears, fissures. The fact condoms are not created for anal sex and commonly break, is replaced with the lie that using a condom assures students' safety. Look around your mouth to make sure you don't notice any difference in coloration, sores and bumps. You should also feel under your chin, neck and back part of your jaw for swollen lymph nodes. What are the treatment options? The best treatment is prevention; reducing your risk factors will benefit your oral health.
