Dr. Parag Kachalia is one of the most influential people in dentistry. And as one of the Seattle Study Club's Top 10 Young Educators, he's using his influence to help other dentists achieve their best in their business. His only regret in his career is not joining the Study Club sooner. As dentists, we are responsible for the wellness of our patients, but it's also our job to run a successful business. And Dr. Kachalia knows that dentistry is about more than just the 32 teeth in the mouth. He's the rare kind of dentist who loves the business side of things. He minored in economics and explains how that education helps him more in his daily practice (and as a mentor) than any physiology course he took in college. Economics and dentistry weren't always the plan — Dr. Kachalia wanted to be an oncologist, but he's always been an economist at heart. His family ran their own business, and while he was inspired to take economics courses, not many other dental students are. In addition, many teachers aren't prepared to teach the type of economics we need to run a successful business in the 2020s. Dr. Kachalia discusses this disconnect between the university and the practice and how it inspired him to get involved with the Seattle Study Club. One of the biggest things he's doing with the Study Club is discussing new types of dental technology, specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI), and how to pick out what kind of tech you need in your practice. There are three criteria Dr. Kachalia uses before he invests in new equipment or technology, and he shares how we can apply his process to all business investments we make. It's important to look at how these new kinds of dental technology will work for your practice and how these tools will benefit you not only as a dentist but also as a business owner. Why Interdisciplinary Dentistry is Too Hard for Most Dentists Episode #404 with Dr. Jeff Rouse Interdisciplinary dentistry is the future. So, why isn't there more buy-in, and why are dentists struggling to give interdisciplinary care? To reveal why it's so difficult and the steps you can take to get started, Kirk Behrendt brings back Dr. Jeff Rouse from Spear Education for his thoughts and advice to help you provide the best care for your patients. It's time to help patients beyond their teeth! To learn how, listen to Episode 404 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: Education in interdisciplinary care is lacking. Don't just focus on structure and biology issues. Go beyond products and materials to help patients. Airway is the gateway to comprehensive dentistry. Join a study club! Quotes: “You have to feel confident and competent in doing [dentistry]. So, you have to have the education and spend the time learning it. And there are, unfortunately, very few places to learn that. A majority of the education we have is focused on technique because it's company-driven, a lot of it. It's, ‘I want to learn about E-MAX. I want to learn about zirconia systems. I want to learn about composites,' because you're going to do a procedure. And the thought process is, ‘Show me how to do that thing, and then I'll go back and do that thing and make more money doing that thing.' So, it's technique, materials. Or it's product, ‘Get me a scanner. Get me a milling machine. Get me a laser.' Things. But once again, it's materials from a company, your product from a company, driving dentistry. And unfortunately, for us, it also plays into what dental school taught us, which is how to work with materials and how to work with product.” (12:41—14:18) “When we go through in dental school and put together a treatment plan, all we do is list what's broken, what's diseased, what I'm going to do about it. So, it's singular. It's, ‘Tooth number two has a . . . Tooth number 31 has a . . . They have this, and I'm going to use this technique in order to take care of it. This product. This machine.' And that's not interdisciplinary dentistry at all. So, our education is lacking.” (14:19—15:06) “Airway gives you the opportunity to get the patient out of the hygiene operatory, whereas talking to them about their teeth are worn, their teeth are in the wrong location, the teeth have the gums covering them; they need to be pushed back, harder conversation to have with people. Much more difficult. Especially wear patients, malocclusions, really difficult conversation because you don't want people, when they're brand-new to your practice, to think you're just after their money.” (17:54—18:27) “I'm now seeing this increase in younger dentists doing what I'm going to call better dentistry, at least more exciting dentistry, more profitable dentistry, than they ever have before. It's not because of the way we now teach it at Spear versus how Bill and I taught it; it's because airway looks at skeletal and dentoalveolar as it relates to the skeleton differently than we ever have. It adds this extra piece.” (22:42—23:17) “Airway gets people in for comprehensive evaluations, and it gets them to do more complex, comprehensive dentistry than I've ever had opportunities to do before.” (25:01—25:13) “There are people out there that want to help you be better than what you are right now, and to achieve better than they are. If you're excited enough to be one of the best, there are lots of people that are willing to help you get there.” (27:56—28:12) “Young dentists need to know that there are people that want to help them. And a study club format is probably the best way to go about doing that. And the two that I've been associated with are Seattle Study Club and Spear Study Club. They both have their own advantages and disadvantages, but they're both critical. In fact, if you can be in both, it's even better. If you could figure out a way to be in both of...

The last time we had Dr. Wael Garine on Dental Slang, we discussed non-verbal slang and prosthodontics. Dr. Garine is without a doubt a wizard when it comes to prosthetics and implant dentistry, but it's his new role as Director of Operations at the Seattle Study Club that earned him a spot on Incisal Edge Magazine's 2021 list of most influential people in dentistry.  Dr. Garine currently owns a multi-practice in Florida and operates out of two locations. Running a multi-practice sort of fell into his lap when a friend and fellow dentist offered him his office and his patients after decided to quit the practice, but it was exactly what he wanted. Owning a multi-practice not only provides more room to service more patients but also gives Dr. Garine more free time to spend his energy on what he truly loves to do: teach. Dr. Garine always wanted to teach and help fellow dentists stay up-to-date with the latest dental tech, tools, and procedures. Seattle Study Club offers up the perfect opportunity to do so. Dr. Garine has been involved with the club for 14 years and shares a few of his experiences starting and what path led him to eventually become a director. Seattle Study Club is a peer-to-peer learning program that brings local dentists together to learn new tricks of the trade and share their experiences with one another. Directors of the local clubs are free to develop their own curriculum to cater to the needs of the dentists in that area, and there are group-learning programs and different educational opportunities offered throughout the year. With the pandemic, many of these programs have been moved online, and Dr. Garine discusses this transition and how listeners can get access to past speakers and symposiums. Dr. Garine's new role as Director of Operations allows him to continue teaching and guiding other dentists and directors, but he now also has the opportunity to bring in new speakers, new learning modules, and grow the network with even more dentists. He's excited to share some of these new plans with us, and some of the new slang that's evolving within Seattle Study Club as roles and expectations are shifting around dentistry. Listen now to learn how you can get involved. In This Episode You Will Learn Why Dr. Garine was inspired to start a multi-practice 3:12 The top three challenges you face when running more than one dental practice 5:11 How the COVID pandemic impacts the multi-practice model 8:52 Dr. Garine''s new role as Director of Operations in the Seattle Study Club 20:20 What makes Seattle Study Club so unique for dentists 22:29 How Seattle Study Club moved their annual symposium content online 29:30 Some Questions We Discuss How did Dr. Garine end up in southern Florida? 1:52 What does Dr. Garine love most about multi-practice dentistry? 4:17 Where is the future of multi-practice dentistry headed? 7:00 How Dr. Garine got involved with the Seattle Study Club? 12:11 How can you join or become a director of the Seattle Study Club? 16:56 Resources: Visit our website: www.DentalSlang.com Connect with us on Facebook: Dental Slang Connect with Dr. Wael and the Seattle Study Club: wael@seattlestudyclub.com Learn more about Dr. Wael and the SSC in Incisal Edge Magazine Get involved with The Seattle Study Club Listen to Dr. Wael's first episode on Dental Slang
