He's also the editor of the Orthodox Arts Journal and host of the Symbolic World blog and podcast. I was looking for someone to talk about Spiritual Captial, and was not disappointed. We talk about how money should be thought of as pure potential, how borrowing “accelerates time” and “pulls from the future.” We also discuss how you can get stuck worshiping the potential of money and forget the more important goals in life. An absolutely fascinating conversation with Jonathan Pageau. BIOGRAPHY: Jonathan Pageau graduated with distinction from the Painting and Drawing program at Concordia University in Montreal during the late 1990s. Quickly disillusioned with contemporary art, he discovered icons and traditional Christian images along his own spiritual journey. Rekindling his love of art through study of traditional forms, Jonathan developed a passion for wood carving. Having studied Orthodox Theology and Iconology at the University of Sherbrooke, since 2003 Jonathan has been carving different types of liturgical objects. His carvings have been commissioned by churches, bishops, priests and laypeople in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. He has participated is several exhibitions of icons and teaches icon carving with Hexamaeron. He is also an editor at the Orthodox Arts Journal. “We Orthodox live Christ in the Divine Liturgy, or rather Christ lives within us during the duration of the Divine Liturgy. The Divine Liturgy is the work of God. We say: "It is time for the Lord to act."“Christ celebrated the Divine Liturgy once and this passed into eternity. His divinized human nature came to the Divine Liturgy. We know Christ specifically in the Divine Liturgy. The Divine Liturgy we celebrate is the same Divine Liturgy which was done by Christ on Great Thursday in the Mystical Supper.”As the Orthodox Arts Journal puts it: “During the last century, Saint Sophrony the Athonite emerged as a leading ascetic and spiritual father, hesychast, and theologian par excellence of the hypostatic principle and the Uncreated Light.” He is a disciple of St. Silouan the Athonite and one the most beloved Saints of the 20th century. Is art just a luxury for the wealthy? Can there even be a definition for it? How did the Incarnation of the Logos change the world? What did Dostoyevsky mean by having one of his characters in The Idiot say, “in the future, man will be saved by beauty?” Jonathan Pageau possesses a unique combination of gifts. He is an extraordinary artist, chiefly in the area of carving and iconography (feast your eyes and soul on his stunning work at www.pageaucarvings.com), and he is an articulate social critic, making important connections between the zeitgeist and trends in the world of art and public images. He is also a convert to Orthodoxy from a Protestant background, and serves as the editor of the Orthodox Arts Journal (www.orthodoxartsjournal.org). Hire this man to speak at your next conference. You’re welcome. Don't forget to subscribe to the show. Ratings and reviews really help!
