Investing in Others: A Lasting LegacyIn the coming years, the names of Phil and Pam Black may fade from memory, but their profound influence on young Christian men and women will leave a lasting mark on the kingdom of Christ.Throughout their 51 years of marriage, the Blacks have worked side by side to raise a family, serve their local church, run a business, and support various charitable causes. Whether leading medical teams on numerous missions to Ghana or contributing to the establishment of One Bistro, a ministry dedicated to eradicating hunger and sharing the hope of Jesus in Xenia, Ohio, their focus has always been on helping those in need.Following the example set by Jesus, Phil and Pam prioritize showing love and compassion to others, a lesson instilled in them by their own parents many years ago. They have dedicated themselves to mentoring and supporting those around them, opening their home to visiting missionaries and offering a haven to students from Cedarville University.Phil, who worked as a pharmacist for over 30 years, viewed his profession as a form of ministry, using it to meet the needs of those in pain and suffering. His partnership with former Cedarville University president Paul Dixon led to the establishment of the University's esteemed School of Pharmacy, ensuring that Cedarville's Christian impact would spread globally. The legacy of Phil and Pam Black's selfless devotion to serving others in the name of Jesus continues to inspire those around them. World renowned fly fisherman and pioneer, Captain Paul Dixon, joins us to discuss striped bass conservation, the art of flats fishing and the 51" striper he recently caught and released.
Paul Dixon's name has preceded his presence for decades, and rightfully so. His life in fishing has had enormous wings, ranging from pioneering the shallow water striped bass fishery with flats skiffs in Montauk and the eastern end of Long Island, to guiding for tarpon in the Florida Keys. He's seen the rise and fall of his beloved stripers and his voice was impactful in their struggle for survival. (Their recovery has been heavily documented and so many years later, today, the fishery is falling apart, again, due to similar practices that all but destroyed them years ago. “There are none so blind as those who will not see!” I don't know where that quote came from, but it appropriately fits the greedy whose actions guarantee destruction!) On today's podcast, Paul weaves us through his beautiful, tangled life, which has been connected to his fellow man as much as it is to a fish! He has been a modern day pirate, tv show host and guest, shop owner, and more importantly a heartfelt guy who has inspired his fellow guides, anglers and friends into preserving our resource through love, science, and fundraising. No one has done the latter better! After this podcast was recorded, Bonefish & Tarpon Trust decided it will induct Paul Dixon in the fall of 2022 into their Circle of Honor with the Lefty Kreh Award for his life long efforts in conservation! But, too, what he speaks about today helped cement this well deserved award.

The First Dixon at Cedarville 50 Years AgoBack in 1971, the Dixon name became well known at a small Christian liberal arts college in Ohio. The imprint of that one person is still visible everywhere on campus today. But most noticeably, on the lives of countless students.Yes, Pat Dixon, wife of chancellor and former president Paul Dixon, has left her mark on Cedarville University. She was here seven years before Paul, who became president in 1978.Pat was a well liked and respected public school teacher in Chattanooga, Tennessee, her hometown, when she got the call from then-Cedarville president Dr. James T. Jeremiah to join the education department faculty. This began a 25-year career teaching in the English education program. In 1996, Pat shifted into her role as assistant to the president, namely her husband. Her salary the first year? $1. Her earnings increased after that, but she wasn't in it for the money – she loved Cedarville and desired to bring her eye for design to the interior and exterior of the University's buildings. She wanted the look of the University to match the quality of its programs. While she enjoyed using her tremendous sense of balance and beauty, her primary love has always been teaching students and pouring into them. She led students on missions trips to Hungary and China and was always on the lookout for someone God had called her to invest in.“As young girl growing up, I was in a Christian home, but I went to camp one year, and this college student was my counselor, and she just poured herself into me as a 14-year-old,” Pat shares during the podcast. “She just told how to have devotions; she poured into me spiritual truth. I always valued that, and I always said to myself, ‘I want to do that to others, pour myself into a student.' Even now as we're retired, and we're moving here and there, I always pray that God will lead me to someone that I could pour myself into.”Pat is a prayer warrior, and she shared about her prayer life in an article for the Torch back in 1982.

Paul is one of the most sought-after guides in these hallowed waters and is being recognized for his innovations and conservation work as the recipient of this year's Isaac Walton Award from the American Museum of Fly Fishing. Paul has acquired a long list of clients who have become lifelong friends, and the shenanigans that have occurred are the stuff of legend. In this episode we were lucky enough to sit down with Captain Paul Dixon of To The Point Charters based out of Montauk, New York. Captain Dixon is a pioneer when it comes to targeting Striped Bass on the flats in the northeast. Many of his tactics are what we use today, and those tactics came from days upon days of learning the hard way. Paul has been at the forefront of Striped Bass conservation, most notably with his work with Jamie Howard and the film Running the Coast. Paul was also on ESPN's Guide House, the first fishing reality show that featured guides in Montauk during the fall run and their day to day activities. When Paul is not guiding in Montauk, he can be found in Key Largo, Florida where he guides for tarpon, permit, and bonefish, and anything else that swims. If you want to learn from one of the best we highly recommend giving Captain Dixon a call. But make sure to do so early as he is in high demand.
