In the heart of Dublin's north inner-city, the SFX was one of the defining venues of Dublin's music scene. U2, The Smiths, New Order, Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Pogues are just some of the acts to have taken to the stage in the Jesuit hall that enjoyed a remarkable second life. I'm joined by David Bell (who experienced the venue as a fan, reporter, merchman and band manager) and Paul Page (Whipping Boy). Thanks to Laura Williams, Jackie Trulock and all at the Annesley Bridge House.

Tonight on Trackside, Kevin Lee and Curt Cavin check in from all over the country. Curt and producer Josh are in Indianapolis while Kevin is in sunny Florida at Sebring Raceway. Then, Kevin and Curt discuss the upcoming docuseries leading up to the Indianapolis 500 in partnership with the CW and VICE Media. We discuss the six-part series called “100 Days to Indy” and what kind of audience and reach the series is trying to have. Which drivers should the series focus on? The conversation goes deep into the potential content, could it push controversy and how it will impact teams. Then, Kevin and Curt discuss the marketing budget and strategy of IndyCar and the series being more aggressive in its approach moving forward. That leads to a conversation about the reports that a group of drivers sent letters to the highest ranking management at IndyCar in a push for more marketing. To round out the first hour, Kevin and Curt answer Twitter questions and get into news and notes of the day. In the second hour, the legendary broadcaster Paul Page joins the show to discuss his book, Hello, I'm Paul Page: It's Race Day in Indianapolis. Curt and the 27-year Indy 500 broadcaster discuss the project of the book and how he constructed it. Page talks about the stories he tells in the book and which ones he got to tell at length for the first time publicly. The broadcast booth at IMS used to be situated in a manner that Page couldn't see the finish line and he tells the story of calling one of Al Unser Jr's wins in the early 1990s. The longtime broadcaster tells more stories about how complex broadcasting is at a place as big as IMS and some of the work he's the proudest of. Then, Page details why he wanted Mario Andretti to write the foreword in his book. It's a brilliant 30 minutes with a great storyteller. To round out the show, Kevin and Curt discuss the return of Thursday Night Thunder in SRX, other driver news and what we missed during the show.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Whipping boy's second album Heartworm was released on 23 October 1995. I first saw Whipping Boy in the early 90s in Cork. I loved the two Cheree EPs and their debut Submarine. Their gigs were always intense, explosive tinderbox affairs. Then we heard that they'd signed a record deal with Sony. Well this'll be interesting, we all thought. Heartworm was a revelation. In this episode I discuss the album with Paul Page, the band's guitarist. We talk about: the influence of seeing of Echo & the Bunnymen at Dublin's SFX in 1985; Whipping Boy's early days; passing off songs from Pop Will Eat Itself as their own demo tape to get a gig in Dublin's Underground; the early Cheree EPs; Submarine; signing to Sony; the writing and recording of Heartworm; touring with Lou Reed; and Heartworm's reissue. Produced by Paul McDermott for Learn & Sing Productions.
It was the year that Soccer hooligans rioted in Lansdowne Road, Jack Charlton retired, and Ireland voted to allow divorce. 1995 was also the year Whipping Boy released their stunning second album Heartworm. Recorded between September and November 1994 in Windmill Lane Studios, it included tracks such as Twinkle, When We Were Young and We Don't Need Nobody Else. It's an album that is highly respected by many music fans. It's emotional; it's powerful; it's timeless. And it's about to be reissued on double vinyl and cd, featuring a number of b-sides and demos. Whipping Boy consisted of Ferghal McKee on Lead Vocals, Paul Page on Guitar, Myles McDonnell on Bass and Colm Hassett on Drums. Formed in Dublin in 1988, they initially went by the name of Lolita and the Whipping Boy before shortening their name when their female guitarist left the band. Throughout their career, the band released three albums on three different record labels. But it is Heartworm, released on Columbia records, that has cast the longest legacy. In this episode, Jack talks to 20 year old Californian, Dean Thompson who in just 2 years racing super late models, has already racked up a Rookie of the year title along with Irwindale Speedway's 2020 Track Title. His dream, like so many others who refine their skills on America's Short Tracks is to one day, make it to the very top of the NASCAR Pyramid, the NASCAR Cup Series.Jack catches up on things with Michael Waltrip. Together they review Michael's career in NASCAR as well as his Fox TV role and his return to driving as part Tony Stewart's & Ray Evernham's horsepower Circus the Superstar Racing Experience.Paul Page and IndyCars are forever linked and Jack visits with his old friend to get Page's take on the past, present and future of the sport. They also reminisce about some of their ABC assignments and fellow announcers as well as Paul's new book: “Hello, I'm Paul Page. I's Raceday In Indianapolis”.And in Jack's “Story Time” segment, he shares a cautionary tale about how what you may think is a harmless gesture can if you are not careful, earn you the title of “Ugly American”.
Not only did he recover from a harrowing helicopter crash that almost struck Speedway High School in 1977, he also had to cope earlier that year with the suicide of his mentor, Sid Collins, the original "Voice of the Indy 500" on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network. Veteran motorsports broadcaster Paul Page - who was inducted into the IMS Hall of Fame last month - will be Nelson's guest to share insights from his eventful life, including his close friendship with three-time Indy 500 winner Bobby Unser, who died in May at age 87. Unser periodically had been Paul's sidekick in the broadcast booth on both radio and TV.

“When We Were Young” The Dublin outfit Whipping Boy have just three albums to their name-- Submarine, Heartworm and their posthumous self-titled effort. Look, all three are brilliant, but Heartworm is considered by many to be a front to back classic. A staggering collection of anger, passion, poetry, and grace, sonically Heartworm falls somewhere between A House and The Fall—it grinds away with staggering melodic beauty and streetwise lyrical grit and it shoots light out from every note that’s played. It is a straight up, stone cold stunner. When they formed in 1988 they were Lolita and the Whipping Boy, but when their lineup solidified, and it was Fearghal McKee (vocals), Paul Page (guitar), Myles McDonnell (bass, vocals), and Colm Hassett (drums), they shortened their name to just Whipping Boy. They were a dark and powerful band capable of staggering beauty and edgy elegies that were redolent with wisdom and philosophy. Their influence can still be heard today in bands like The Fontaines DC and Shame and if you put on any of their three albums, the urgency, the intensity and the muscle sound as fresh as ever.If they’d stuck around? Who knows. They might have ruled the world. They certainly had all the tools at their disposal. But the band were done in '98 and that was that. Did they give us enough? You and I both know that it could never be enough—we’re fans, we’re greedy that way. In this interview, Whipping Boy guitarist Paul Page talks to Alex about the band’s love for Big Black, his admiration of Johnny Marr and why he hasn’t picked up the guitar in years. He also talks about touring with Lou Reed, what it would take for him to play again and his relationship with the other guys in Whipping Boy. Paul Page is a great guy and this is an honest, unflinching chat about what was, what could have been and all that tricky stuff in between.
