How have we made discoveries about the world around us and how has our understanding changed when we got it wrong? Adam Rutherford hosts Radio 4's discussion programme which starts the week, asking about the the nature of scientific discovery, understanding and changing our mind. Andrea Wulf's latest book is The Traveller: The Revolutionary Life of George Forster and his Search for Humanity. She has reassessed the botanist and ethnologist who accompanied Captain Cook's second voyage, taking him from Antarctica to the tropical islands of the South Pacific. During this time, Forster studied diverse people, culture and nature and returned a confirmed opponent of empire, racism and slavery: he was celebrated in his lifetime, but has since been largely forgotten by history. The geneticist Kathryn Paige Harden argues that the latest research complicates our ideas about blame, punishment and moral responsibility. In her new book Original Sin: The Genetics of Wrongdoing, the Problem of Blame and the Future of Forgiveness, she looks at the area where human behaviour meets inherited biology. She thinks we must look again at questions of wrong doing and free will, reassessing old ideas of guilt and accountability. We are all hormonal all of the time, because to be hormonal is to be human says Saira Hameed, a leading endocrinologist. Hormones are the often misunderstood signalling system that makes our bodies function which she explain in her new book, Signals: The Inside Story of Our Hormones, separating medical breakthroughs from the obsessions of wellness influencers. Your morning briefing. All the news you need to start your day.On today's podcast:(1) Xi Jinping warned Donald Trump of a potential conflict over Taiwan if the issue is mismanaged, saying it could push the China-US relationship into a highly dangerous situation.(2) Angela Rayner, the UK’s former deputy prime minister, has been cleared of deliberate wrongdoing in an investigation into her tax affairs, potentially paving the way for a leadership bid against Prime Minister Keir Starmer.(3) European Union leaders must show courage in strengthening the bloc’s foundations, according to European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde. “Europe now finds itself in a world that is far less forgiving of the gaps in its institutional architecture,” she said Wednesday in Aachen, Germany. “Institutions that were built for an earlier age are being tested by demands they were not fully designed to meet.”(4) The US Senate narrowly confirmed Kevin Warsh as chair of the Federal Reserve, setting up the most controversial leadership transition at the US central bank in decades and a test of its political independence.(5) More UK estate agents have reported falling house prices in April as the war in Iran and elevated borrowing costs hit buyer confidence, according to a closely watched survey.(6) Back in the 2000s, the market for pension risk transfers was an eat-what-you-kill industry, and pickings were slim. Nearly two decades on, PRTs are a much easier sell and there are £1.3 trillion of assets to fight for. Podcast Conversation: Stressed? Overscheduled? It's not easy to admit wrongdoing when it is pointed out to you. The natural reaction is to rationalize your actions. It matters how you react because it affects your relationships with everyone, including God. It may seem like an unimportant issue, but it isn't. You know how frustrated and exasperated you feel when someone refuses to take responsibility and instead uses blame-shifting. Watch this video to find out how you can admit your wrongdoing and stop rationalizing your actions. Accountability matters, and apologizing is important, even in your dysfunctional relationships. #dysfunctionalrelationship #rationalization #takingresponsibility #apologize #blameshifting #christianrelationshipadvice #accountability Website: https://www.changemyrelationship.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ChangeMyRelationship YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@changemyrelationship Watch this video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/31s2KPmKTb4

Praise and Gratitude All praise, honor, and glory given to God. Acknowledging dependence on God for everything. Example: “Without God, I couldn’t do nothing.” Dealing with Worldly Cares Not worrying about the cares of the world. Example: “I ain’t worried about the cares of this world… I ain’t going to take it with me and you ain’t going to take it with you.” Message Focus: Commitment to God The message focuses on committing to God without excuses. The devil tries to create excuses to avoid church and reading the Bible. Story of Mike: A Committed Church Member Mike, a church member, passed away last Wednesday. He suffered from chronic pain in his feet, legs, and back. Initially came to church hunched over. Played the guitar and loved talking about the Lord. His condition worsened, making it impossible to stand. Needed help with cleaning and bathing. Despite the pain, Mike never complained. He would say, “Oh, God,” but never complained. Even in severe pain, he talked about the Lord and praised God. His complexion changed, and he would say, “Praise God.” He expressed a desire to attend church despite his condition. Asked for prayers to get well enough to go to church. Visited him the day before he died; he was unresponsive. Showed a slight flinch when prayed for, indicating awareness. Mike’s commitment was inspiring. He would come to church in a wheelchair, praising God. Personal Reflection on Commitment Tired of making excuses. Acknowledges working long hours and feeling tired. Preachers need to stay up, study, visit, and preach. Doing it out of love and without begrudging it. Value of Faith Faith is the most valuable thing, besides family. Wife, grandkids, and sons. The world means nothing compared to God. Not caring about worldly threats. Example: “I don’t care if they send a bomb over here tonight. I know where I’m going.” Personal Improvement Acknowledges having room for personal improvement. The message hit hard and prompted self-reflection. Luke 14:16-24: The Parable of the Great Supper A man gave a great supper and invited many. Those invited made excuses for not coming. Bought a piece of ground and needed to see it. Bought five yoke of oxen and needed to prove them. Married a wife and therefore could not come. The master, angry, instructed his servant to bring in the poor, maimed, halt, and blind. These were the outcasts. There was still room, so the servant was told to compel others to come in. Those who were initially invited will not taste the supper. The scripture is interpreted as an offer of salvation being rejected due to excuses. Excuses and Neglecting Salvation People make excuses for not coming to church. Example: “Good weather sets the lines in your face and they’ll come up with every excuse in the world.” Need to quit making excuses and just do. Falling asleep while reading the Bible is an excuse. The devil stirs up excuses. Telling you, “it’s alright,” but it is not. Wanting to be committed to God, not the world. Trusting in God’s Provision Not worrying about losing a job. God will provide. God will supply needs. Worrying about tomorrow is pointless. Tomorrow may not come. Examples of Excuses in the Bible Moses made excuses, saying he couldn’t talk plainly. God provided Aaron to help him. People worry about worldly things instead of Jesus’ return. Personal Salvation Experience Knowing what happened the night of salvation. Conviction by the Holy Spirit. Had excuses for four years before going to church. Didn’t understand the preaching initially because the heart wasn’t convicted. When convicted, got scared, and it became real. Excuses stopped. Believes that neglecting the final chance would have been a mistake. People neglect salvation by pushing it aside. Attitude of Christians Some Christians look miserable and sad. They have the greatest thing, salvation, but are unhappy. Need to be committed to God. Stop foolishness and separate from the world. God doesn’t care about worldly possessions. He cares if the blood has been applied and if one has a contrite spirit. God is ready to save those with a contrite spirit. Personal Transformation Transformed from disliking people and self to loving God. Raised by a hard mother, but she got it right before she died. Committed to getting right with God. Took 38 years to commit to God due to liking worldly things. These men in the scripture came up with excuses for not getting salvation. God was offering a spiritual meal to save their souls. Jesus died for the soul, which will live in heaven or hell. Sharing Faith A man at work asked about coming to church. The man was a “ghostbuster” and didn’t believe in a God who allows children to get hurt. Explained the curse on the world and free will. Evil targets the vulnerable, like baby animals. Some sick children will be healed, and those who aren’t will be in glory. All could be in glory if they opened their hearts. People don’t want to commit because they think they have to quit certain things. Didn’t quit anything, just changed the way of doing things. Gained a new church family. Family and Commitment Always longed for a family. Son got saved and committed to God in November. Granddaughter committed to God two weeks before him. Another granddaughter wants to get baptized but isn’t ready yet. She is afraid of dying and going to hell. God knows her heart and will call her when it’s time. Grown people are not committed to God. If not committed, one will die and go to hell. Personal Struggles and Commitment Tired of the devil coming at me. Struggles with road rage. Sees people distracted while driving and worries. Acknowledges having issues. The devil never bothered me until I got saved. The calling to preach made it worse. Need to get more committed and remove excuses. Ask God what to do instead of telling Him what He has done. God is looking for good men and women to harvest the fields. When committed, God will put you where He wants you. Ask the Lord how to start and He will show you. Made the decision to get committed to God when saved. Failed, come short, slacked, and slung. Overcoming Weakness Tiredness prevents reading the Bible. Keeps scripture in mind all day. Ponders on it and gets back into the Word. Excuses of being tired and weak. This is going to stop. Made up mind to live for the Lord and improve commitment. Pointing at self, not others. Everyone can do a little better. Not worried about the world or its pain. When told to go home from work, doesn’t argue. Has something else to do. Agrees with Valerie about the chaos in the world. Praying for the “ghostbuster” at work to open his heart to God. Was stubborn for four years, turning God away. Convicted one last time and believes turning away then would have been final. Told God she wouldn’t turn away again if allowed to come back. Tired of excuses and the devil’s interference. These men neglected salvation due to excuses. This is serious; there is healing and evil. Until committed, one will be miserable. Those who were bidden but didn’t come will not taste the supper. They neglected salvation. People neglect salvation every day in church. God knows when one does wrong. Repents when failing and coming short of God’s glory. If hard-hearted, one would forget about it due to lack of commitment. Wrongdoing bothers until repentance. Not trying to get others to come, but doing what God says. Going to get on the altar and make sure things are right with God. Room for improvement and wants to improve for God, not for show. Willing to stand for God, even if the world is burning down. Needs God’s help and will ask for it.

Shawna Boren and Dan Kent break down this week's message by Greg Boyd, titled: "Love Does Not Rejoice in Wrongdoing." Come join these two Nugget Dancers as they break down the next sermon in our "Love Does" series.
This sermon by Greg Boyd shows us that love is more than simply not wronging others. The love of God actually means that we are not delighting or celebrating the wrongdoing. The motivations of our heart are shaped by love and therefore produce the fruit of loving action.

Most executives think a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) is a lifeline. It's actually a tombstone. They believe if they just work harder, hit the impossible metrics, and play nice, they can turn the ship around. But here's the cold reality: A PIP isn't designed for your improvement. It's a paper trail designed for your termination. It's a paid interview period—and the clock is ticking. Why this matters There is a dangerous gap between what corporate policy says (HR is here to help) and how the game is actually played (HR protects the company). When you are being managed out, your natural instinct is to defend your performance or seek mediation. That instinct is wrong. By the time you spot the signs—nitpicking, the "cold shoulder," or a sudden shift in responsibilities—the decision has likely already been made. If you treat a PIP as a genuine coaching moment, you lose your leverage. If you don't know how to document the "buckets of wrongdoing" and build a counter-narrative, you walk away with damaged confidence and the bare minimum severance. But if you know the playbook, you can turn a forced exit into a negotiated victory. In this episode, we unpack: Why the "Performance Improvement Plan" is almost never about performance. The exact signs that you are being managed out (and why a new manager is the #1 red flag). Why HR is not your friend—and why going to them too early destroys your leverage. The "Buckets of Wrongdoing" framework: How to document toxic behavior to build your case. The "At-Will" employment trap: Why it's a one-way street that benefits the employer. How to negotiate a severance package even when they try to offer you nothing. The mental toll of gaslighting and why validation is the first step to recovery. A real transformation A professional facing a "Me Too" situation involving a CEO, dating back 20 years. She was wrongly terminated and then gaslit for seven months. Her family and friends told her she was crazy, urged her to drop it, and warned she was damaging her reputation. She felt isolated and powerless. She partnered with Dan Goodman to stop playing the victim and start building a case. They refused to accept the silence. They documented the timeline, identified the inconsistencies, and presented a "scathing, reputationally damaging" narrative back to the employer. After months of being ignored, she received a $50,000 offer out of the blue. But more importantly, the gaslighting stopped. The employer acknowledged the liability through their wallet. She moved from feeling "crazy" to being fully vindicated—and the negotiation is still ongoing. Timestamps (0:00) — Intro (2:16) — Why you should never go to HR expecting a solution (5:20) — The PIP reality: It's a paid interview period (8:35) — How to spot when you are being managed out (The "New Leader" Red Flag) (10:24) — The financial motivation behind making you quit (14:40) — How to leverage "Buckets of Wrongdoing" for severance (19:00) — Preparing for the worst: What documents you need to gather now (24:00) — Using HR vs. Being played by HR (29:40) — The "At-Will" employment scam and why it's one-sided (36:30) — The mental health cost of carrying workplace trauma The takeaway Blind loyalty is a career liability. If you are put on a PIP, the company has already broken up with you; they just haven't moved their stuff out yet. Don't internalize the gaslighting. Document the dysfunction. Turn their desire to get rid of you into your capital to walk away paid. This video uncovers that pain — the chaos, broken trust, abandonment fears, and betrayal wounds that wire the subconscious nervous system to equate love with danger. You'll learn how conditioning forms, why your nervous system responds before you're even conscious of it, and how ancient wisdom + neuroscience come together to create a practical path forward. How should federal governments attempt to right, or at least remedy, past wrongs? Is it appropriate for victims of group-based harms or their descendants to press current generations to atone for the sins of their predecessors? Grace Kao, Professor of Ethics and the inaugural Sano Chair in Pacific and Asian American Theology at Claremont School of Theology, explores these questions by drawing upon the emerging human rights standard for reparations, theological resources from her Presbyterian faith tradition, and four case-studies of acknowledged wrongdoing against AAPI communities. Series: "Ethics, Religion and Public Life: Walter H. Capps Center Series" [Public Affairs] [Humanities] [Show ID: 40876]
In this episode, Kamini Wood addresses the common challenge of setting boundaries, highlighting that the discomfort experienced is normal and does not signify wrongdoing. She explains that fears of rejection, disappointing others, confrontation, or being perceived as mean often make setting boundaries difficult. This discomfort is compounded by a societal conditioning that prioritizes others' feelings over our own. Kamini emphasizes that while the person receiving a boundary may also experience discomfort or react negatively, this is their own adjustment to a change in dynamic, not a reflection of the boundary being incorrect. Setting boundaries is an act of courage and self-respect that ultimately clarifies needs, defines what works and doesn't work in a relationship, and fosters more genuine and respectful connections. She acknowledges the difficulty, having struggled with boundaries herself, but stresses the importance of understanding the "why" behind them to prevent over-functioning, overgiving, resentment, and burnout.

Tuesday Afternoon Twitter Space 24 June 2025This lecture examines the complexities of forgiveness, arguing that it should be earned rather than given freely. Stefan Molyneux discusses the risks of unearned forgiveness, illustrating how it can lead to a lack of accountability and perpetuate harmful behaviors. He critiques societal pressures to forgive for personal peace and highlights the importance of genuine restitution, which involves acknowledgment of wrongdoing and corrective actions. The lecture further explores the implications of forgiveness in relationships, the nature of apologies, and the need for moral responsibility across generations. Through audience interactions, Molyneux emphasizes the importance of navigating forgiveness with ethical integrity and mutual respect, ultimately urging listeners to reconsider their understanding of forgiveness as a process grounded in moral accountability rather than emotional obligation.GET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND THE FULL AUDIOBOOK!https://peacefulparenting.com/Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!Subscribers get 12 HOURS on the "Truth About the French Revolution," multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material - as well as AIs for Real-Time Relationships, Bitcoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-In Shows! You also receive private livestreams, HUNDREDS of exclusive premium shows, early release podcasts, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2025
In this episode, I explore Meditations 3.13, where Marcus Aurelius reminds us to keep the principles of Stoicism as close at hand as a doctor keeps their instruments. Our “scalpel” is our rational faculty—our ability to discern what is right and act justly, even when it's hard. When we stay ready in this way, we fulfill our role as rational agents within the whole of Nature. We also dig into what it means to be part of a rational and interconnected universe. Marcus urges us to treat others justly not because they always deserve it, but because we're bound to one another by a shared nature. Their ignorance could have been ours. Their path could have been ours. Recognizing this calls us to act with understanding and compassion, grounded always in reason. MEDITATIONS 3.13 "As doctors have their instruments and scalpels always at hand to meet sudden demands for treatment, so do you have your doctrines ready in order to recognize the divine and human... you will not do any act well which concerns man without referring it to the divine; and the same is true of your conduct to God." THREE TAKEAWAYS — Keep your principles close: Stoic doctrines should be ready to apply, not left to theory. — We are all connected: Wrongdoing stems from ignorance, and that demands compassion. — Acting rationally is our duty: It's how we honor our place within the whole of Nature.
