parkrun, which started as a small, informal 5K run with just 13 participants in Bushy Park, London, in 2004, has grown into a global phenomenon with over 10 million runners and 2600 parkruns. Its founder, South African born, Paul Sinton-Hewitt grew up in Potchefstroom. From only 26 runners and 3 volunteers at the first run, parkrun has flourished, particularly in South Africa, where more than a million of its members are based. Bruce Fordyce, the legendary South African ultra-marathon runner, is one of the key figures behind parkrun's success. In an interview with BizNews, Fordyce shared that he plans to participate in his 549th parkrun this weekend, despite having recently undergone knee replacement surgery. parkrun started he says that South Africans are drawn to the 5-kilometer parkrun due to its safety, the majority of runners are women. Fordyce says participants enjoy adding new runs to their totals, which he describes as “stamp collecting on steroids,” as they try to add more destinations to their list.

Paul Sinton-Hewitt, the founder of parkrun, was born in Zimbabwe and moved to South Africa at the age of five, where he was brought up in care with his two siblings. Always a keen middle distance runner, he was a second for a friend in one of South Africa's most gruelling road races. Eventually he moved to the UK to work in IT and raise a family. After a perfect storm of redundancy, marriage breakdown and an injury which prevented him from running with his own club, he decided he'd start a time trial in a local park, for his running club pals. The only proviso that they had to have coffee and cake with him afterwards. Twenty years later, that timed run that he started has outpaced anything he could have envisaged and turned into parkrun. The 5k run around local parks on a Saturday morning, has gone global and the parkrun community has hundreds of thousands of people running or volunteering as stewards every week. These two sports psychologists may have different areas they focus on, but they both love to run; Dr Helen Lane and Professor Andy Lane both race marathons, have run over 200 parkruns and even enjoy ultra marathons. This means they get the running struggles we go through and how important the mental side of training the mind is to racing well. Helen and Andy have both worked with professional athletes to help them reach their potential, as well as teaching runners psychological skills training techniques such as imagery, anxiety regulation, and emotion regulation. If you love learning more about the mind, and how we can learn to handle the negative thoughts that go through our mind when we are in the hard part of a race, you will love this husband and wife episode, where there is a lot of humor and fast talking British and New Zealand accents, be ready to listen, and be ready to learn! Today’s Guests Dr Helen Lane has a PhD in attitudes to eating among exercisers. She has authored several articles including the commonly used measure of mood called the The Brunel Mood Scale and a version of the Eating Attitude Test. Andy Lane has a PhD and is BASES accredited sport and exercise scientist, a fellow of BASES, Chartered by the British Psychological Society, and a psychologist registered with the Health Professionals Council. What you will learn about: How Helen and Andy met, and if they psychoanalyze one another  What Andy has learned in the 100 peer reviewed journal articles he has worked on The powerful impact of sad or depressed thoughts and how it can really affect your ability to run well How important it is to go for a run if you are in a difficult period of your life Why the fear of failure is not necessary a bad thing, and how to limit the pressure you feel for a race when you have told so many people you are going the race Why you should have some kind of effort involved with you goals, rather than exclusively time goals Why EVERYONE has a self confidence issue, and why knowing that makes us feel like we are not alone How we are all connected emotionally to food, and guilt can be present even while we are eating food we enjoy The relationship between food and performance, and how runners can be affected by a need to be thin The strategies to use to get through the hardest parts of the race, including imagery of a runner you admire (really interesting!) Running with music can actually help you run faster if you find the right rhythm What to do if you have a bad race; how jumping in another race COULD be a good idea, in the right circumstance  Why having a break after a great race will help you to reassess and think up a new goal, if you go back into it without much rest, you are going to struggle   Inspirational Quotes: You get trapped in the event. You might be the expert, but you are still trapped in the event. You do need to hold back when you are giving advice out, and it is difficult to take advice as well, no matter how well intended it is.-Andy Lane A small mark of depression can lead to all sorts of devastating or negative results that go on from that.-Andy Lane Everybody needs a bag of tricks to identify and use in the dark moments.-Andy Lane Your emotions are evolutionary functions to tell you what is important- Andy Lane Human beings are competitive, so we have competed with ourself by saying that (a time we want), so we can easily think we are failures.-Helen Lane Everyone underneath has an underlining self esteem issue, they are not confident in all situations- Helen Lane Everyone has a little bit of an emotional problem with eating; they eat when they are stressed, bored, not when they are hungry, overeat in social settings...we all have this awareness with food, almost a preoccupation with food.-Helen Lane If I look at social media, I would not know what to eat.- Andy Lane If you want to find an angry person, find a hungry person!- Andy Lane Rethink what fatigue means. Fatigue is an indicator you are working hard. It is not to be feared, it is accepting that you are working hard.- Andy Lane It is very difficult to get from the very highs and maintain those highs, it's unlikely you are going to have another Olympic Gold Medal winning moment two months after.-Andy Lane Resources: Last week's episode with Dean Karnazes Subscribe to the Running for Real Podcast on your favorite player: Apple Podcasts (iTunes) Stitcher Castbox Overcast Spotify Google Play Tina4Real Podcast  Running for Real Superstars Community Support Tina through her Patreon Page Buy a Running for Real T-shirt, Tank, or Hat Andy on Twitter Helen on Twitter Winning Lane website Chrissie Wellington interview Paul Sinton Hewitt interview Check out the Running for Real Podcast Series, sponsoring this episode today: Beginners Mental Toughness Training Marathon Training Coming Back From Injuries Running Nutrition Running Through and After Pregnancy   Thanks for Listening! Parkrun has become a global movement. Although it initially started in the UK with some friends meeting up on a Saturday for a run followed by coffee, it has grown to over 1100 locations in 14 countries around the world with 3.5 million people registered, yes, it really is that big! With 200,000 participants joining in every weekend for free, it is no wonder it has taken on a life of its own, especially as many of the people involved through running the events and volunteering are people like you! Just good, genuine people! Paul Sinton-Hewitt, the founder of Parkrun is here to talk about the growth they have experienced, completely organically, and why Paul thinks the people who participate are some of the best people in the world. With fostering community as the heart and center of Parkrun, it is easy to see why. Parkrun has been responsible for over 100,000 people joining clubs, and they celebrate the milestones of reaching 50, 100, 250, and even 500 parkruns (thats over 10 years straight! You are going to love this episode if you love the running community, and I hope if you haven't already participated, you will consider it in the future, yes, even if you are unable to run right now! This podcast episode is for you if you love to make new friends, be a part of the running community, and participate in social movements. Parkrun is making the world a healthier, happier place, one location at a time. Today's Guest Paul Sinton-Hewitt Founder of Parkrun, growing it from a few friends meeting for a run and coffee to 200,000 runners every weekend. What You Will Learn About Where the idea for parkrun came from and how it grew the way it did Why the race is a 5k Why parkrun will ALWAYS be free The setbacks to address when setting up new events in the US and other countries around the world What happened when one of the packruns tried to add a fee for park maintenance   Inspirational Quotes It's a simple run, in a park, every single week, with your mates, where we socialize at the end of it. Those principles stand today. Slowly but surely we are energizing the world, we are making the world a healthier and happier place. I receive all these awards, but I receive them on behalf of all the people who make this happen, as without all those volunteers, we would be one event in a park, and I would still be the person doing all the volunteering. We are a social movement that just happens to run. For anybody, regardless of whether they intend running in the future or not, this is a place to go where you meet fantastic people. The people you meet are some of the most beautiful people in the world. Parkrun isn't a cure for everyone, but it is part of the process of how people can be the best they can be. There is nothing more rewarding than doing that with your friends, people who are there to support you and help you and celebrate your achievements. We want more people running more often. We want more people more active more often. Anything we can do to help other people achieve that same goal, we will. If things carry on the way they are, in 2023, we will have over 10000 weekly events and a million runners a week.
