RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio theatre reviews. This week Vidar was reviewing David Edgar's 10th play for the RSC with ‘The New Real' at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Other Place Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon with description by Professional Audio Describers Gethyn Edwards and Carolyn Smith. About The new Real In a faraway country, a ferocious election is about to be fought, and it's hard to tell what's real and what's fake. ‘So here's the offer. To run a highly ethical campaign for a candidate you really can believe in, actually. In a place that needs you. Now.' It's the 2000s. We're in a faraway country. Rachel, a stellar American political strategist, and Caro, her British data whizz, have been hired to fight a ferocious election, in a place where it's hard to tell what's real and what's fake. They think they're here to teach the Eastern Europeans how to do democracy, but it turns out they're here to learn. And when Rachel's former political partner Larry rocks up on the rival side, their showdown threatens to change global politics, from Warsaw to Wisconsin. Forever. At a time of epoch-changing elections on both sides of the Atlantic, Holly Race Roughan (Artistic Director of Headlong) directs The New Real, David Edgar's epic, panoramic play about how the political fault-line was redrawn. An origin story, for right now. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio theatre reviews. This week Vidar is reviewing a new production of Sheridan's ‘The School for Scandal' Directed by Tinuke Craig at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon with description by Professional Audio Describers Julia Grundy and Ellie Packer. About The School for Scandal bY Richard Brinkley Sheridan: Brilliant biting comedy styled to the nines with period flair and promising an exuberant feast of big wigs and even bigger laughs. ‘There's no possibility of being witty without a little ill nature.' 1770s London, where the aristocracy's morals have plunged lower than the necklines on the women's gowns. The vicious Lady Sneerwell enjoys ruining reputations for pleasure, and her latest target is the young bachelor Charles Surface — why should this pretentious little rake inherit his uncle's fortune? Together with Charles' conniving brother Joseph, Sneerwell orchestrates an elaborate scheme of intrigue and infidelity that's sure to ruffle all the right feathers — hopefully. After Shakespeare but long before Bridgerton, there was The School for Scandal, Sheridan's brilliantly biting comedy of manners in five acts. This new production — styled to the nines with period flair — promises an exuberant feast of big wigs and even bigger laughs. Tinuke Craig, Artistic Associate at the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith, directs. Recent work includes Jitney (The Old Vic for Headlong), The Colour Purple (Leicester Curve) and Crave (Chichester). In 1892, a resident with cholera accidentally transmitted the disease via the Elbe River to Hamburg, Germany’s entire water supply. Within weeks, ten thousand citizens died. Eight years earlier, German microbiologist Robert Koch had made a discovery: cholera was waterborne. Koch’s revelation prodded officials in large European cities to invest in filtration systems to protect their water. Hamburg authorities, however, had done nothing. Citing costs and alleging dubious science, they’d ignored clear warnings while their city careened toward catastrophe. The book of Proverbs has a lot to say about those of us who see trouble yet refuse to act. “A prudent person foresees danger and takes precaution” (27:12 NLT). When God helps us see danger ahead, it’s common sense to take action to address the danger. We wisely change course (v. 11). Or we ready ourselves with appropriate precautions that He provides. But we do something. To do nothing is sheer lunacy. We can all fail to miss the warning signs, however, and careen toward disaster. “The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences” (v. 12 nlt). In Scripture and in the life of Jesus, God shows us the path to follow and warns us of trouble we’ll surely face. If we’re foolish, we’ll barrel ahead, headlong into danger. Instead, as He leads us by His grace, may we heed His wisdom and change course. Winn Collier

If Randy were to title this episode he'd call it "What number did John call to phone in his bassline?", or possibly "Hey Fred, can you make this cool?!"Hoop diddy diddy, hoop diddy who the hell writes this shit? Kev is crestfallen at the lack of lyrical imagination from the usually brilliant Brian May. Randy finds the concept of a man with a stick in his hand and a woman with a hotdog stand almost too much to take. The boys also talk about pissing in kettles, 80s music videos, and backmasked vocals. It's all here in another rambunctious, irreverent episode of the only Queen podcast with two men named Randy and Kevin hosting. Of course, we're talking Headlong - and thank all the gods that ever existed that this one is off the wheel. Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Twitter and Facebook! We'll always try to answer any questions you have and seriously appreciate any corrections you make to anything we get wrong. And thanks so much for all your support as usual. Yorkshire born actor, Samuel Edward-Cook made his screen debut in the BBC One series LAND GIRLS, before landing the role of Danny Whizz-Bang in the highly acclaimed and BAFTA award-winning crime drama PEAKY BLINDERS alongside Cillian Murphy, Joe Cole and Helen McCrory. Other television credits include the ITV miniseries BRIEF ENCOUNTERS, the ITV anthology series INNOCENT, the long-running BBC series SILENT WITNESS, and the Channel 4 comedy-drama PURE. Samuel will soon appear playing Ceri Davies in BETTER, a BBC series by Sister Pictures, the production company behind THIS IS GOING TO HURT, CHERNOBYL and GANGS OF LONDON, among many others. The crime drama follows a corrupt police detective who undergoes a major moral awakening and makes amends of her wrongdoings of the past. The series will also star Leila Farzad (I HATE SUZIE), Andrew Buchan and Anton lesser. Also in 2023, Samuel will play Isaac Hartley in Shane Meadows' highly anticipated BBC drama THE GALLOWS POLE, based on the novel of the same name by Benjamin Myers. Loosely based on true events, the six-part series set in 18th century Yorkshire will recount the rise and fall of David Hartley and the Crag Vale Coiners. The series will also star Michael Socha (PAPILLON), George Mackay (1917), Thomas Turgoose (THIS IS ENGLAND), Tom Burke (THE SOUVENIR) and Sophie McShera (DOWNTON ABBEY). As well as his screen credits, Samuel has numerous theatre credits, including BOYS for Headlong, directed by Robert Icke, Matthew Quintal in Richard Bean's PITCAIRN directed by Max Stafford-Clark, TITUS ANDRONICUS at Shakespeare's Globe, Edmund in Lucy Bailey's contemporary adaptation of KING LEAR, staring David Haigh and portraying Captain Wentworth in the Royal Exchange Theatre production of PERSUASION. His performance as Haimon in Ivo van Hove's production of ANTIGONE alongside Juliette Binoche attracted rave reviews, with theatre critic Stephen Collins praising his “passion” and "extraordinary range of emotions”. The play itself was described as “undeniably impressive” by The Independent and as a "production that combines a sombre aesthetic beauty with a sense of the ambivalence at the heart of Sophocles's play” by The Guardian.
The group makes their final preparations for the next leg of their journey. Shanks and Salix continue tweaking the Elven Speed making the most of their time on this long trek. Hoshino performs the spell “Legend Lore” with the group for Arguile's “Guardian's Rapier”. “The Guardian's Rapier is a rose of thorns, once held by Ybo, who plucked it from the heart of her people's betrayal. Gerviss, the Void Dragon, served as her shield and companion on her journey. But the rapier's true potential remains dormant, buried beneath layers of thorns, waiting for the one who possesses the courage to navigate its twists and turns. Yet, be warned, for in the center of the rose lies a seed of both light and dark, a seed that could bloom into a flower of beauty or a weed of destruction. Choose your path wisely, for the thorns will cut deep and the consequences will echo far.” Their ally Quon informs them of strange things happening to his homeland and fears that perhaps it is too late. The group also finally takes the time to fill in Hoshino (and Salix) on the history of the party and what they would have missed before joining the group. While talking Zechs and Hoshino discover that Zechs' bow “Jack of All Trades” has altered. There are several attempts to discover the new features of his bow with very limited success. There's so much happening and that's where we pick up… Find out what happens next in this episode of the Medusa's Cascade: Collateral Damage! Ron MacLean is author of the story collections We Might as Well Light Something On Fire and Why the Long Face? and the novels Blue Winnetka Skies and Headlong, winner of the 2014 Indie Book Award for Best Mystery. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 11, 2022 is: headlong HED-LAWNG adverb Headlong can be a synonym of headfirst, but it is most often used figuratively to describe something done either in a reckless manner or without pause or delay. // He's impulsive and often rushes headlong into new endeavors, giving little thought to long-term viability. See the entry > Examples: "Joseph Mallord William Turner … was less a British artist of the Romantic era than a fiery experimentalist whose audacious work blazed a path from serene Romanticism headlong into the turbulent realm of Modernist art." — The Boston Globe, 22 Apr. 2022 Did you know? Headlong was born out of the Middle English word hedling, a combination of hed ("head") and -ling, an adverb suffix meaning "in such a direction or manner." Thus, hedling meant "with the head first”; it was originally applied to descriptions of falling, or to downward movement. Likely due to the influence of the words along and long, -ling came to be understood as a variant of the adverb suffix -long, a development that carried headlong, as well as sidelong, along with it.

SHOW NOTES: In Podcast Episode 159, “Choose Not to Run Headlong into Danger,” Kim discusses the importance of heeding the danger signs. Young Asahel ran headlong into danger, ignoring the obvious signs. In contrast, Joseph ran away from danger, without needing flashing neon signs to warn him. Which one are you most like in this season of life? The primary scripture texts for this episode are 2 Samuel 2:12-32 with 22-23 as the focal verses. 22 Again Abner shouted to him, “Get away from here! I don't want to kill you. How could I ever face your brother Joab again?” 23 But Asahel refused to turn back, so Abner thrust the butt end of his spear through Asahel's stomach, and the spear came out through his back. He stumbled to the ground and died there. And everyone who came by that spot stopped and stood still when they saw Asahel lying there. Northern Stage will produce a magical new adaptation of family favourite The Sorcerer's Apprentice this Christmas (27 November - 31 December). Set in the streets of Newcastle but not quite as we know it, audiences will be treated to live music, puppetry, magic and illusion as they follow the adventures of Hatty Rabbit and her friends after a mysterious letter arrives inviting Hatty to an interview for a sorcerer's apprentice… Maria Crocker will direct her first main stage show for Northern Stage. Maria trained on the theatre's first NORTH programme in 2013 where she met her fellow founders of The Letter Room, and has performed in several Christmas productions at the Newcastle theatre including The Wonderful Wizard of Oz adapted by Caroline Bird. An associate artist at Headlong, Maria's credits include associate director on the Tony Award-winning Hadestown for the National Theatre and Local Hero for The Lyceum. She says, “It's thrilling to be making a show for the epic space, having trained on Northern Stage's NORTH scheme in 2013. This Christmas is all about making the normal feel magical. We have a fantastic team of creative wizards working tremendously hard to bring this Newcastle story to life in the most enchanting, sparkly way, and to spread some much needed festive joy.” Adapted by Laura Lindow (The Snow Queen/Northern Stage, Key Change/Open Clasp), The Sorcerer's Apprentice is designed by Amanda Mascarenhas (Run It Back/Talawa Theatre Company, Cuttin' It/Royal Exchange Theatre), with lighting design by Jai Morjaria (Wuthering Heights/National Theatre & Bristol Old Vic), sound design by Matthew Tuckey (Wolf!/Kitchen Zoo, Repeat Signal/November Club), movement direction by Gavin Coward - a performer, member and collaborator with balletLORENT, and original music by Katie Doherty who has created music for the Royal Shakespeare Company, five family Christmas productions for Northern Stage and the award-winning musical Beyond the End of the Road. Molly Barrett-Manasseh will design and make the puppets, with puppetry direction by Thomas Walton, and associate director is North East dramaturg and director Rachael Walsh - one of two recipients of the 2021 JMK Victoria Wood Bursary. The Sorcerer's Apprentice runs from 27 November – 31 December. Tickets start from £10. Book online at www.northernstage.co.uk or call the box office on 0191 230 5151. Paradox House presents… Episode 7 of Scripted hosted by Daisy Lewis. This week Daisy sat down with one of the U.K's brightest writers in Anya Reiss to talk through all things scripted. We also bump up the excitement with her upcoming TV show, ‘Becoming Elizabeth', that is being distributed via STARZ! Anya Reiss began her writing career in theatre with her debut play Spur of the Moment at the Royal Court Theatre in 2010. She won the Most Promising Playwright Award at both the Critics Circle and Evening Standard awards that year along with Best New Play at the TMAs. Her follow up play The Acid Test was staged at the same venue the next year and her National Theatre Connections play Forty-Five Minutes was in 2013. Her original version of The Seagull, directed by Russell Bolam, was staged in 2012 at Southwark Playhouse, and they worked on two further modern-day Chekhovs together at the same venue and then St James Theatre. Since then her version of Spring Awakening toured with Headlong and an adaptation of Oliver Twist was at the Regents' Park Theatre in 2017. Anya has worked in television, a core writer on Eastenders and a lead writer on series one of Channel 4's Ackley Bridge. She is currently writer-producer on Starz's Becoming Elizabeth which will air next year. Enjoy!
