Aviation is at a crossroads. On one side is the familiarity of legacy systems, including decades-old air traffic control infrastructure and manual ground operations. On the other is the promise of digital transformation: smarter flight management, real-time operational insights, and seamless passenger experiences driven by advanced technologies. With many organisations currently caught in the middle, the challenge is to know where to start. In this month's Altitude, we're joined by three people who know. Marco Rueckert is Searidge Technologies' Chief Technology Officer. He shares insights into the pioneering work Searidge is doing around the world, working with airports, airlines and ANSPS to harness the power of data to improve operational outcomes. That includes in Hong Kong, where Michelle Ho was the Manager of Airfield Digital Transformation for the Airport Authority. Hong Kong's revolutionary embrace of technology has helped set a benchmark for other airports around the world. Michelle shares her experience in deploying the airport's award-winning Digital Apron and Tower Management System, and working in its state-of-the-art Integrated Airport Centre.Andy Taylor, Chief Solutions Officer at NATS, will explore what's happening in the UK, with both Manchester and Farnborough airports set to introduce ‘hybrid towers' to enhance their operations, while also explaining how NATS and Searidge are exploring the use of AI at Heathrow to improve operational resilience. You can also watch an on demand version of the livestream on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@NatsAero
This week Nicola and Di chat with the incredibly talented Rachel Griffiths. Rachel really needs no introduction - having starred in so many award-winning films and TV shows, including Brothers & Sisters, Six Feet Under, Anyone But You, Hilary and Jackie, My Best Friend’s Wedding and the iconic Muriel’s Wedding, she is quite simply Australian acting royalty. Her talent has been recognised with countless awards including 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Golden Globe award, a further 3 Golden Globe nominations, 4 Emmy nominations and an Academy Award nomination for her role in Hilary and Jackie. She’s also a writer, producer and director, the wife of painter Andy Taylor and in her own words, an imperfect mother of 3. In this episode we hear about Rachel being born in Newcastle, growing up in Melbourne, but how a day trip to Sydney’s Palm Beach in the 90s, led to her falling in love with the landscape and buying a house that day - making her one of our neighbours. We chat to Rachel about the early days of her career - what it was like starring in huge films like Muriel’s Wedding and My Best Friend’s Wedding, her intense 10 year studio contract in the US, and what it was that made Rachel choose to move back to Australia with her family. Rachel gives us insight into how much the industry has changed over the last 30 years and the differences between movie stars of the 90s and the younger generation of actors today. We also talk all about her new TV series, Madam, which is based on the true story of a woman who decides to set up an ethical brothel in New Zealand. We get into a really interesting discussion about the sex work industry, the economics of it and how it is so closely connected to the loneliness epidemic. Rachel also opens up to us about her kids, what she believes makes her marriage work, and why she thinks Esther Perel is amazing. This was one of those conversations where it felt like we were all girlfriends having a chat and we laughed so hard, that Rachel’s watch thought she’d been doing a HIIT workout! We hope you find it as much fun as we did. This episode is proudly sponsored by Eir Women. Use code OTBF20 at checkout to receive a 20% discount on any purchase. On the last Sunday in 2024 Andy Taylor unpacked what is meant by ‘Peace on Earth' and how it applies to our lives today.
The mid-80's were a tough time for Elton John. The singer and pianist who had been a stellar success in the 70's was deep in the clutches of drug addiction, and struggling to perform due to throat issues. His studio album, "Leather Jackets" had failed to produce a single to reach the top 40. It seemed that he was finding more controversy in the British tabloids than he was success in the music industry. In the midst of this, however, he produced a stellar live album. Live in Australia with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra was John's twenty-eighth official album release, focusing on some of the performers earlier hits. In the last two months of 1986, Elton John did a series of concerts as a part of his tour of Australia and New Zealand which contained two sets. The first set was a traditional concert with John and his 14-piece band. The second set had the band backed by the 88-piece Melbourne Symphony Orchestra with John dressed as Mozart in front of the grand piano. The Live album captured this symphonic second set.The album was a success, hitting number 24 on the Billboard 200 and certifying gold by January 1988.This concert also marked a change. It was the last in which Elton John appeared in his elaborate stage costumes. He also underwent throat surgery in January 1987 which - while successful - permanently altered his voice. His next few albums would be somewhat more successful, but he would sober up in the early 90's and release his highly successful "The One" album in 1992.Bruce presents this live symphonic hit for this week's podcast. Burn Down the MissionThis song is the concluding track of John's third album, "Tumbleweed Connection." That was a concept album with the theme of Western Americana. The lyrics are a bit vague, but the story tells of a poor community oppressed by some kind of powerful force. The singer has taken direct action to remedy the situation, and is defending his action of burning down the mission as the only way to defend his family. Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest WordHailing from his "Blue Moves" studio album, this sad song is characterized by lyricist Bernie Taupin as "that whole idealistic feeling people get when they want to save something from dying when they basically know deep down inside that it is already dead." Take Me to the PilotOriginally from John's self-titled second album, this song contains lyrics which both John and Taupin admit are nonsensical, but just contain words that sound good together. Six of the 14 tracks on this live album are from Elton John's second album. Candle In the WindThis song from the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album was never released as a single in the US until it was released in this live version. Taupin used Marilyn Monroe as an archetype of the famous artist cut down in the prime of life. He was initially inspired by hearing Clive Davis using the phrase "candle in the wind" in tribute to Janis Joplin. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion picture SpaceballsMel Brooks is at it again, this time with his classic spoof on Star Wars. May the Schwartz be with you! STAFF PICKS:Throwing It All Away by GenesisLynch kicks off the staff picks with this single from the Invisible Touch album that went to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford wrote the song and lyrics. The upbeat music is quite different from the melancholy lyrics about a love who is leaving the singer.Don't Let Me Die Young by Andy TaylorRob brings us a solo single from Duran Duran's guitarist. The video for the song depicts at-risk youth engaged in dangerous activities at night from crime and cars to drugs. Taylor's album "Thunder" came out in the midst of the hair metal band's height. This single also features Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols.Alone Again Or by The DamnedWayne features a cover song originally recorded in 1967 by the group Love. The Damned began as a punk group, and moved to post-punk, somewhat goth rock over time. Love was an inspiration for the Damned, which encouraged them to cover this song. The horns give the track a Spanish feel.Housequake by PrinceBruce closes out the staff picks with a party song from the double album "Sign O' The Times." It was the B-side for the single "U Got the Look." Prince used pitch-shifted vocals to create a higher, more feminine voice for this track. It was originally going to be on an androgynous alter persona album called "Camille" before it was folded into this double album. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:21st Century Common Man, Pt. 1 by Tangerine DreamThis jazz group closes out our podcast this week. "It's Only Rock and Roll" There's a lot to tell about Michael Des Barres, but let's start with the music. In the early '70s, the Sussex-born singer/songwriter fronted the glam rock band Silverhead, who were signed to Deep Purple's label. He decided to try his luck on the West Coast, moving to L.A. and fronting the rock/soul outfit, who were signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song Records. In '82, Des Barres formed the hard rock band Chequered Past with Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols and Clem Burke of Blondie. That band opened for folks like INXS and Duran Duran and that Duran Duran association proved auspicious as Des Barres was invited by Andy Taylor to replace Robert Palmer as the singer of The Power Station. I know I said Des Barres was a rock and roll chameleon, but at this point he sounds more like a rock and roll shark, doesn't he? He never stops moving. Des Barres fronted The Power Station at Live Aid and along the way he co-wrote "Obsession" with Holly Knight, which became a global hit for Animotion, he put out fabulous solo records, fronted another band called The Mistakes and in 2013 he joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the world premiere of 200 Motels: The Suites, by Frank Zappa in which he appeared as Rance, the narrator. We'll get to his new album in a second, but let's talk about his acting first. Des Barres has so many IMDB credits, it's dizzying. Getting his start at age eight, he's appeared in over 100 television shows and close to fifty movies. Let me run through a few because it's nuts: All you '80s kids might remember him in The Ghoulies, but he was in To Sir With Love, Under Siege, and David Lynch's Mulholland Drive and on television he was on Roseanne, Just Shoot Me, Frasier, Seinfeld, St. Elsewhere and MacGyver. Des Barres is a true rock and roll chameleon, because, like a chameleon, he's able to effortlessly change from situation to situation. That subtle shapeshifting quality makes folks like Des Barres able to basically do whatever he wants because he has massive range and can move through the cultural space with otherworldly ease. Des Barres' new album It's Only Rock and Roll is an affectionate tipping of the hat to the songs of the '70s that he loves. From Roxy Music's Love Is The Drug to Sweet's Fox On The Run to the Faces' Stay With Me, this is a scorcher of a record that features Des Barres sounding better than ever--his delivery still has the same muscular pounce and raw elegance and the 12 songs here are delivered with equal parts affection, admiration and grace. And this interview? In this episode, we sit down with Nick Ellis, the Executive Director of the RPM Foundation.Obviously we're interested in what he's working on, but the RPM organization is doing some pretty critical work in preserving the rich heritage and skills needed to keep vintage cars and motorcycles going. As the leader of this non-profit dedicated to advancing careers in vehicle restoration and preservation, Nick provides a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing the classic car and motorcycle community and the sense of responsibility that comes with owning rare and (sometimes) valuable vehicles. The RPM Foundation's mission centers around advocating for skilled trades and ensuring the next generation is equipped with the knowledge and expertise to keep these vintage machines on the road. Nick explains the foundation's focus on identifying and preserving "endangered skills" - specialized techniques and craftsmanship that are at risk of disappearing as older technicians retire and modern automotive technology advances. Through grant funding, apprenticeship programs, and hands-on educational initiatives, the RPM Foundation is working to bridge this gap and inspire young people to pursue careers in the automotive restoration and preservation fields. Nick shares insights into the challenges of engaging a generation that is increasingly disconnected from the hands-on, mechanical aspects of vehicle ownership and maintenance. We also discuss the profound personal and cultural significance of these vintage vehicles, and the transformative power of the experiences they can provide. The hosts and Nick explore stories that illustrate the sense of community, problem-solving, and personal growth that can emerge from tackling the unique challenges of classic car and motorcycle ownership.Covering:1933 Ford CabrioletBMW K 75 motorcycle1967 Firebird1950 Ford Meteor1966 Mustang1965 CamaroModel A FordHenderson motorcycleHarley-Davidson motorcycleBMW R60/2BMW R100/7Mercury XR-7Fiat X1-9Fiat 600 MultiplaThe Hole in the Head Podcast is an ongoing conversation between Andy Taylor and Blaine Dehmlow. A 20-year friendship came to a devastating end when the Letcher Co, Kentucky elected Sheriff, Mickey Stines, shot County District Judge Kevin Mullins – possibly shooting him as many as eight times. Stines then immediately surrendered to the Whitesburg Police. The two men worked together on several cases.According to local media, they worked particularly closely on drug addiction and recovery issues, with Stines working with Mullins to get first-time offenders into rehab. What lead Stines to commit such a brazen murder in the courthouse – with plenty of witnesses? One possible clue is the lawsuit against Stines for not properly supervising a former deputy who pleaded guilty to coercing women prisoners for sex. Whitesburg, KY, is a small town – much like everyone's favorite town, the fictional Mayberry -- where everyone knows everyone else. But it seems Mickey Stines is no Andy Taylor. Brad Garrett wants to solve the mystery of this murder.
Okey doke. Let's address the elefant in the room. When selling a car or motorcycle, the process can be grueling as the worst of humanity seems to seek you out. We don't think it's intentional, so we decided to aggregate some of our experience and take a chance that ONE person might hear this and maybe be just a little less terrible when hunting down a project.Blaine and I have bought and sold more than we care to admit, and when it comes to these kinds of transactions, and we've learned a thing or two. In this episode, Andy and Blaine dive deep into the art of buying a classic car or bike. From establishing rapport with sellers to bringing it home, they share some hard-earned wisdom on navigating the ads on Facebook and Craigslist with honor and transparency. We'll cover essential topics like negotiating prices, finalizing deals, and maintaining the right demeanor, even when faced with challenging situations. The world of flavours is relatively small, so there are just few iconic personalities. One of them is undoubtedly Andy Taylor. After 32 successful years at the University of Nottingham, where he pioneered the study of flavour release from food, he changed career direction in 2010 to found a spin-out company, Flavometrix. He then joined Mars Petcare where he worked for 6 years. Andy currently works with a number of companies to help develop flavour research strategies and to mentor younger researchers in planning and managing their research projects. His association with the University of Nottingham continues through his role as Emeritus Professor, where he works on an ad hoc basis to support and develop younger researchers and is one of the key people organising the key flavour research event: Weurman Symposium. Welcome to the premiere "Song Dive" bonus episode: a way to hear the story behind a song that has made (or will soon make) our collective mixtapes & playlists! On this "Song Dive" episode, I am joined by Guy Fletcher of Dire Straits, and we're talking about the story behind Mark Knopfler's Guitar Heroes' “Going Home (Theme From Local Hero),” which Guy produced. In this episode, I interview Andy Taylor, who shares his journey from partnering with his dad's fencing business to selling it for seven figures, and then setting up other businesses, offering valuable insights along the way. Andy's entry into a family business marked the beginning of relationship dynamics and growth hurdles. He emphasises the importance of maintaining a balance between familial trust and professional conduct. Scaling the business posed challenges in establishing efficient systems and processes. However, personal growth emerged as a cornerstone of Andy's journey, with a focus on continuous self improvement through meditation and exercise. He candidly shares his struggle with negative self talk and depression, highlighting the power of seeking support and being open. Eventually, the process of selling the business proved to be a difficult and stressful experience for Andy. It didn't go to plan, and in the essence of the podcast Andy learnt from these mistakes and has now set up a training school to help others who are embarking on selling a business. Listen in as host David Mandell chats with Certified Financial Planners Bob Peelman, Adam Braunscheidel, and Andrew Taylor from the OJM Group on three wealth planning topics that are relevant for 2024. David begins by discussing with Bob Peelman the basics of 529 plans, including the two types of plans, tax benefits, planning flexibility factors and more. Bob also delves into the new rules coming into effect in 2024 regarding the Roth IRA transfer provisions for unused 529 plan balances. David then turns to Adam Braunscheidel to discuss HSAs. He explains the importance of having a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) to qualify for an HSA and the potential of HSAs as a retirement savings vehicle, taking advantage of their unique triple tax benefit. Adam discusses the tactic of using HSAs for long-term savings by paying current medical expenses out-of-pocket and reimbursing oneself later from the HSA through tax-free distributions. Finally, David chats with Andy Taylor about the question of whether to invest in bonds or hold cash, particularly in the context of recent interest rate fluctuations and inflation rates. Andy explains the inverse relationship between interest rates and bond prices, and how this impacts investment decisions and how the environment as they record the podcast (4th Quarter 2023) is much different than it was 6, 12, or 18 months ago. Planet LP host Ted Asregadoo and Popdose writer Keith Creighton are inching closer to the end of the year with the November New Music Report. This episode is jam-packed with some stellar music recommendations just in time for the holidays. Segment One: The Big Album It's Prince! Known at various times as The Purple One, Christopher, His Royal Badness, The Artist, or Jamie Starr, Prince was at the top of his game between 1980 and 1987 with an impressive music output that few in the music world could match. Why? Because of The Vault. A prolific writer, Prince vaulted roughly 8,000 songs. In 1991, after a series of lackluster albums, Prince released “Diamonds and Pearls” with his new backing band, the New Power Generation. The result was his fifth (and final) #1 hit in the US with “Cream,” a #3 hit with the title track, and two top 20 hits with “Gett Off” and Money Don't Matter 2 Night.” Overall, “Diamonds and Pearls” was an absolute commercial success for Prince. On October 27, 2023, Sony released a super deluxe version with three CDs of vaulted tracks, a double live album, a remaster of the original record, and a disc with singles and different mixes. That's a lot of music, and Ted and Keith break it all down into digestible bits to highlight what's brilliant about the super deluxe edition, what's good, and what misses the mark. Segment Two: New Music Releases The Transcanada Highwaymen's “Explosive Hits Vol #1 is mostly a carefully curated album of cover songs popular in the 1970s. These are Mellow and Radio Gold songs sung by a supergroup consisting of Moe Berry from The Pursuit of Happiness, Chris Murphy from Sloan, Craig Morthey from Odds, and Steven Page formerly of the Barenaked Ladies, but has gone on to a fantastic solo career. Featured songs include their cover of Andy Kim's “Rock Me Gently, and “Which Way You Goin' Billy” by The Poppy Family. Samples of both songs are embedded in this episode. Lol Tolhurst (former drummer from The Cure), Budgie (from Siouxsie & The Banshees), and producer Jackknife Lee have created a cinematic mindscrew of an album entitled “Los Angles.” Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark are back with what will likely be the final album of their career, and boy what a way to go out! Nowhere on the record are songs that sound like their biggest US hit, “If You Leave.” Rather, as Keith says, this is a soundtrack for the end of the world. Ted compares “Bauhaus Staircase” to Tears for Fears' “The Tipping Point” for its strength, its familiarity at times, and the satisfying way it's all put together. Duran Duran is back with Dance Macabre, a Halloween-theme mashup of covers, updated obscure deep cuts, and some originals. Also, guitarist Andy Taylor returns to the group, and so does the drummer of 17 years with the band, Warren Cuccrullo. If you want to go on a journey with a musician who is a bit of an acquired taste, give Christian Kjellvander a try. “Hold Your Love Still” may not be for everyone, but once you become familiar with Kjellvander's voice, you'll find this record mesmerizing — as you will hear. Nat Jay's latest EP, “Turns Out It's Not The End” is one of Keith's favorites this year. Comparing her to an outlier star to Taylor Swift's galaxy-consuming supernova, Jay's song “Something More” could have been included in the new Hunger Games soundtrack — and you'll be able to hear why. Shplang! has been on the music scene for almost three decades, and is part of the International Pop Overthrow scene. Their latest song, “Understood” is featured in this episode. Segment Three: Stream It Before You Buy It Quick hit recommendations. "Pretty Vicious" by The Struts “Telephone Line” by Juliana Hatfield “New Blue Sun” by Andre 3000 “Revisions of Truth” by One Square Mile “Chronicles of a Diamond” by Black Pumas “Can't Find The Brakes” by Dirty Honey “Purple Rain” by Dolly Parton “Harridan” (Live) by Porcupine Tree
Danse Macabre is the sixteenth studio album from Duran Duran. A Halloween-themed album including three new tracks, covers and reworked versions of Duran Duran classics. Former guitarists Andy Taylor and Warren Cuccurullo appear, and Nile Rodgers and Victoria De Angelis of Måneskin also feature as guest artists. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/albumsthatsaveduspodcast/message

Remember those teenage years when we'd create breakup mixtapes? The potency of those songs, how they could evoke such raw emotions - whether it was Paul Simon's '50 Ways to Leave Your Lover' or The Carpenters' 'We've Only Just Begun'. Well, this episode is a homage to the power of music, its unforgettable moments, and the rock legends who've shaped its course. We kick off with a nostalgic trip to when The Police graced the stage at CBGB for their first time - a memory that's now 45 years old. We then switch gears to Robert Plant's recent performance of 'Stairway to Heaven' at a cancer benefit, which Andy Taylor of Duran Duran put together. We move on to delve into the hidden secrets of The Police's Synchronicity album and Paul McCartney's bass contribution to The Rolling Stones' new album, Hackney Diamonds. But that's not all, we also navigate the surprising connections between iconic albums, shedding light on how Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and Mick Jagger lent their voices to each other's music. Impressively, we dive into the influences of our upbringing, reminiscing about the Ramones' third studio album, 'Rocket to Russia', and The The's unforgettable song 'Uncertain Smile'. We reflect on how these unforgettable tunes formed the soundtrack of our youth and school dances. Lastly, we reflect on the emotional gravity of break-up mixtapes and the songs that helped us navigate the stormy seas of heartbreak. So, are you ready to take a walk down memory lane with us? Tune in and let the magic of music transport you back in time!

7 WAYS TO HELP YOU BE UNIQUE Podcasting is growing by leaps and bounds everyday. There are so many podcasts in your niche. That makes it even more critical for your podcast to be unique. If you want to stand out in the sea of sameness, there are a few things you can do that are easy to implement to make you special. WHY BE UNIQUE In the era of artificial intelligence, you can't afford to be information alone. AI can easily reproduce your information. AI cannot copy you, your story and your personality. A fews day ago we took a roadtrip to see Duran Duran in concert. It was the opportunity for my wife to cross off one of her bucket list bands. They put on an amazing show. Nile Rodgers and Chic opened the show. Bastille was the middle act. Then, Duran Duran brought down the house. It was fantastic. Duran Duran started as a band in the Birmingham, England in 1978 with Nick Rhodes, John Taylor and Stephen Duffy. They struggled for a few years as Stephen left the band. Seven others came in and out of the band until they found the five that would become the famous Duran Duran as most know it. Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, and Andy Taylor. They were part of a scene known as the New Romatic movement. It was a musical movement influenced by David Bowie, Marc Bolan and Roxy Music. The New Romantic movement developed fashions inspired by the glam rock era coupled with the early Romantic period of the late 18th and early 19th century. Bands emerging from the New Romantic movement included Spandau Ballet, A Flock of Seagulls, Boy George, and Classix Nouveaux. Though they had success in the U.K., Spandau Ballet and A Flock of Seagulls both only had one big hit in the U.S. Classix Nouveau were hardly known. On the other hand, Duran Duran and Boy George had numerous hits. Duran Duran had 13 songs that hit the Top 20 in the U.S. and many others that cracked the Top 40. DURAN DURAN So what set Duran Duran apart from the rest of the New Romantics? The band learned how to be unique better and unlike any other group. They had John Taylor, Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor in the band. However, none of the three were related, which made a great conversation piece. Nick and Simon were both heartthrobs who wore makeup and fashion epitomizing the style of the New Romantics. They were interesting, gave great interviews, created unique music, and influenced a style in the 80s unmatched by other bands. They wrote and recorded "A View To A Kill" to be the title track of the James Bond film of the same name. It was the first Bond theme to hit number one on the U.S. charts. Duran Duran created fantastic videos to usher in the age of MTV. The iconic videos for "Rio", "Girls on Film" and "Hungry Like the Wolf" were masterpieces in heavy rotation on MTV and still remembered today. Their popularity was demonstrated by the thousands of people singing every note to their songs nearly 40 years after they were released. It was one big party from start to end. You can take seven fundamental lessons from Duran Duran to help you be unique. These fundamentals will help you create raving fans rather than being a one-hit wonder. BE YOURSELF First, to be unique, be yourself. Be authentic. Only you can be you. If you try to fit in, you'll blend in. You won't get noticed. Don't simply copy somebody else. Blaze your own path. Infuse your content with your personality. Nobody can copy you. Duran Duran blazed the way for the New Romantic movement. Their style was unique. The music was original. Simon Le Bon came out of art school straight into the band and it showed. STORIES Next, incorporate your story into your podcast. People love a good story. More importantly, they love a true story. It is authentic and original. Listeners will learn about you with stories. Your stories define your character. They help your audience get to know who you are, what you're about, and what you value. Stories breed friendships. Think of your best friend. How much do you know about your best friend? You know everything, because your best friend tells you everything. They tell you every great story that happens in their life. Relationships derive from revelation. The more you reveal about yourself, the more your listener gets to know you. That's how friendships are formed. TELL THE TRUTH The third fundamental to be authentic is to tell the truth. Honesty fosters relationships. When your listeners learn they can count on you, they discover they can trust you. If you say you will post something on Wednesday, post it on Wednesday. Little deposits in your trust account will go a long way when you tell the truth consistently. Members of Duran Duran left the band, rejoined the band, left the band and rejoined again. They were always upfront with their fans. Andy Taylor joined the band in 1980. He left in 1986 before coming back in 2001. Andy left again in 2006. In 2022, Duran Duran was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The remaining four were there to accept, while Simon Le Bon read a letter from an absent Andy Taylor. The letter revealed Andy was battling prostate cancer. Earlier this year, the band announced they are working on a new project that will include a collaboration with Andy Taylor. They are always authentically truthful and their fans love them for that. BE TRUE TO YOURSELF You can be unique when you stick to your beliefs. Be true to yourself. It is impossible to consistently be something you're not. Trying to be like somebody else will eventually fall apart. It is hard to fake it without tripping up. Your listeners will see through it. Be proud of your features and your flaws. These all combine to make you the unique person you are. Nobody can duplicate your unique combination of qualities. Even during the tough times of the early 90s when grunge and hip hop were taking over, Duran Duran stuck to their mod dance style. They had a drought of four years without reaching the Top 40 chart in the U.S., but they kept true to themselves. It paid off when they hit #3 in 1993 with "Ordinary World" and #7 with "Come Undone". The band has a powerful fan base, because their fans know exactly what they are going to get at every show. PERSONAL STYLE The fifth fundamental to be unique is to use your personal style. To make your show unique, add your personal style. Duran Duran had their fashion. They had their hair, eye liner, ruffles. They had a swagger unlike any other. Do it in a way that only you can do it. Not a made up way. Your unique way. HAVE FUN Like the party Duran Duran put on, have fun. When you have fun, everybody has fun. You attract the right crowd. People don't simply want info, they want entertainment. They are here to get away from life for awhile. Help them do that. It is much more fun to learn when the content is entertaining. Don't be so serious. Lighten up and have a good time. BE MEMORABLE Finally, be unique by being memorable. Make them remember you. Own your category. When your listeners think of your category, they think of you. That happens when your niche is focused. It is nearly impossible to own the "business" category. However, you could own the "bookkeeper for solopreneurs" category. Get focused. Then, get listeners to talk about you. You don't want listeners to casually listen then go away. It is hard to monetize your activities if you are not top-of-mind. Most marketing is focused on top-of-mind awareness and a strong call to action. Your call to action is powerfully effective when you are the first one that comes to mind. When Duran Duran hit the scene, nobody said, "Boy, they sound like Band X." Even though they were inspired by David Bowie and Roxy Music, they sounded different. You can hear David Bowie singing "Wild Boys" or "Notorious". The band knew who they were and stuck to their niche to be memorable. BE UNIQUE THIS WEEK This week, I'd love to see you review two of your episodes. See how many of these fundamentals are present in your podcast. Find one personal story to include in your next podcast. Do one thing in a way only you can do it and make it memorable. Then, let me know how it goes. Email me. And if you have a chance, catch Duran Duran next time they are close. You'll have one incredible night that you will be talking about for years. If you don't have a mentor who can take your hand and walk you every step of the way, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply, click the button and apply to have a chat with me.
