On this week's show, I welcome Sharon Ward to the show. Sharon is the Senior Policy Advisor for the Education Law Center, a statewide nonprofit legal services and advocacy organization that works to secure quality education for Pennsylvania children with an emphasis on students who are most underserved. She has worked for 30 years, inside and outside of government, to secure quality schools, affordable health care, and people-serving budget priorities and to empower advocates to work for economic and social justice. We'll be talking about the ongoing attempts by school boards across the country to ban books, limit teachers' ability to provide welcoming environments to LGBTQ students, and enact extremist agendas in our schools. Last week the ACLU of PA filed a lawsuit against Central Bucks School District for creating a hostile environment for LGBTQ students and the Pennridge School District seems like it wants a lawsuit of its own as it bans books, limits expression, and demands schools be stripped of Pride flags. We'll talk with Sharon Ward about the work of the Education Law Center in defending the rights of ALL students and the legal hot water Bucks County Schools find themselves in. Sharon served two terms on the Albany, NY City Council, directed Governor Tom Wolf's Budget Office and led a government-wide transformation initiative to help state agencies use technology, data, collaboration, and social policy innovation to deliver better and quicker services to Pennsylvanians. She is the founding director of the Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center; Pennsylvania's premier progressive policy think tank and led the fight for an equitable state tax system. She has served as an advisor on state legislation, policy, and advocacy for the School District of Philadelphia, the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit, the Impact Project, Education Voters of Pennsylvania, the Voter Project, and the Keystone Research Center. On this episode I welcome Kadida Kenner to the program. Kadida is the Executive Director of The New Pennsylvania Project. The New Pennsylvania Project (NPP) was founded in May 2021 to expand Pennsylvania's electorate so it reflects the Commonwealth's demographically changing population. The NPP will engage and empower young residents and those living in underrepresented and often neglected communities of color and immigrant communities. Kadida Kenner is the founding executive director of the New Pennsylvania Project. Kadida was previously a writer, producer, and director for college sports television programming in Charlotte, North Carolina, but energized by the 2016 elections, she decided to take a hiatus from TV production, and return to campaign and organizing work. In 2017 Kadida moved back to Pennsylvania to take on the role of director of campaigns for the Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center including the We The People – PA and Why Courts Matter – PA campaigns. Beginning in May of 2021 Kadida became the executive director of the New Pennsylvania Project, an organization modeled after the successful New Georgia Project and Fair Fight Georgia, both founded by former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams. The New Pennsylvania Project civically engages, registers, mobilizes and empowers often-ignored constituents, especially the youth, and communities of color in rural, urban, and suburban Pennsylvania in a year-round effort to change and expand the electorate in the Commonwealth. Kadida is a tireless advocate for social and economic justice issues and is motivated to empower and excite the electorate to enthusiastically vote in every election, and all the way down the entire ballot. The Temple University graduate was born outside Pittsburgh and currently lives in Harrisburg, although she grew up in West Chester, Pennsylvania, coincidentally the birthplace of her organizing hero, civil rights icon, Bayard Rustin. A proposal before the Pennsylvania General Assembly would completely upend how voters elect judges and justices to our state appeals courts. House Bill 38 is a proposed state constitutional amendment that would create geographical judicial districts, with each judge and justice on the state Superior, Commonwealth, and Supreme Courts representing those districts, ending our current practice of statewide judicial elections. Opponents, including ACLU-PA, call it judicial gerrymandering, in anticipation that the legislature would draw the districts to benefit their party, as they do with legislative districts. Kadida Kenner is the director of campaigns for Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center. In this episode, she explains why judicial gerrymandering is so problematic and what you can do about it. Learn more at www.judicialindependencepa.org. You can send an email to your state representative in opposition to House Bill 38 at this link: https://action.aclu.org/send-message/pa-stop-judicial-gerrymandering
New Zealand’s prime minister Jacinda Ardern moves to ban all assault rifles and automatic or semi-automatic weapons. Just like that Vulcan and Moloch are thrown back to the underworld. #EggBoy becomes global hero for egging fascist Australian politician, Fraser Anning. And, predictably, liberal guardians of civility decide to discipline #EggBoy and “both-sides” the issue. Wisconsin Republican’s plan to strip power of incoming Democratic governor shot down as unconstitutional. The flooding in Nebraska, Missouri, and Iowa in the aftermath of the latest “Bomb Cyclone” should be shaking us awake about our climate future. We have less than 12 years now folks. Some union leaders from the AFL-CIO come out hard against the Green New Deal and right-wing and corporate media eats it up. PA Auditor General Eugene DePasquale hosted a public hearing on Penn State’s campus on the impacts of climate change on the state. DePasquale said, “Every time there’s a disaster in Pennsylvania, it’s a hit to the state’s taxpayers, as opposed to if we were able to do something beforehand to mitigate this.” A report will be forthcoming. Democratic Presidential hopeful former Colorado governor John Hickenlooper makes his primetime campaign debut by telling the world about the time he went to go see Deep Throat with this mom. Then in his recovery, he asks why women candidates aren’t asked if they plan on choosing a male running-mate. Bernie’s campaign makes history as campaign staffers form a union! Wooo. Bernie goes public with his support and uses the moment to advocate for more unionization across the country. Speaking of moms, Devin Nunes is not happy with his Twitter mom, so he’s going to sue her. And her cow. When Devin Nunes’ Cow tweeted, “Devin’s boots are full of manure. “He’s udder-ly worthless and it’s pasture time to mooove him to prison.” Beto O’Rourke brings in some big fundraising numbers, $6.1 million. He’s a little vague on the details, though. Pennsylvania House Republicans failed at fast-tracking an anti-union bill through the chamber this week and it was a call for a roll call vote that killed it, for now. SEIU Healthcare PA, PASNAP and the Coalition of Nurses were in the capitol on Wednesday to lobby for safe patient ratios in hospitals across the state PA Promise Rally in the Capitol next Wednesday. The PA Promise is legislation that would bring tuition-free college to the PA State System of Higher Education. The Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center held its annual Budget Summit this week. Vice President’s baby, the National Space Council, will be pushing hard to make the June 2020 launch date to return humans to the moon. Better bring the Preparation H because NASA researchers finding that the longer astronauts spend in space, the more like they are to reactivate the herpes virus. Galactic capitalists getting really excited about turning the eighth continent, the Moon, into a mining and rocket fuel operation. For real.
