On tonight's show, I welcome Ashli Giles-Perkins and Adrienne King to the show. Ashli is a staff attorney with the Education Law Center and Adrienne King is the President and Founder of the PairUp Society and a parent of two children in the Pennridge School district. Today we'll be talking about the discrimination complaint against the Pennridge School Districts filed with the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights. The complaint charges that the Pennridge School District has discriminated against LGBTQ+ students and students of color in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972. We'll talk about what all that means and the history of ongoing and systemic discrimination in the districts. And, we'll talk about what the election of a new school board majority may mean for how this complaint addressed. Ashli Giles-Perkins joined the Philadelphia office of the Education Law Center in October 2020 as an Independence Foundation Public Interest Law Fellow. Ashli's work centers on addressing the significant educational injustices for youth involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems in the Philadelphia area who enter, reside in, and leave residential facilities. Ashli provides representation of students and families, training for families and communities, and significant outreach to stakeholders to ensure oversight, accountability, and access to quality education for system-involved youth. Originally from Bridgeport, Connecticut, Ashli graduated with a J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law with a certificate in child & family law, as well as with an M.Ed. in cultural educational policy studies from Loyola Chicago's School of Education. While at Loyola, Ashli interned with Advocates for Children of New York and the Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights. Adrienne King is a wife, mother of two daughters in the Pennridge School District, and an outspoken leader and advocate in the community. Adrienne founded The PairUP Society , a 501c3 non-profit organization after experiencing difficulties in her children's school district and realizing the difficulties of navigating that system for her and other underrepresented students and their families. The PairUp Society helps build community among underrepresented students and their families and provide them with resources to advocate for their needs while also activating allies to provide support. Adrienne holds a BS in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, MS in Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs from Temple University and leadership certifications from Duke University and Cornell University. Adrienne and her family currently reside in Perkasie, PA where she is committed to putting roots down in their community and doing the work to create a sense of psychological safety, belonging and inclusion for all community members LINKS Education Law Center | https://www.elc-pa.org/ The PairUp Society | https://www.thepairupsociety.org/ Civil Rights Complaint against Pennridge School District | https://bit.ly/3RBZCZB WHYY article on the Civil Rights complaint | https://bit.ly/4agzU47 "Civil RIghts Complaint Filed Against Pennridge School District," Jenny Stephens, Bucks County Beacon | https://bit.ly/3NnFbNH "Understanding OCR complaints, like in the Pennridge School District, and their role to ensure equal access to high-quality public education," Jenny Stephens, Bucks County Beacon | https://bit.ly/3GBhHAP If we want a progressive future, we need progressive media. Are you a person that flies by the seat of your pants? Do you fly like Maverick in Top Gun where your instincts dominate? This is absolutely cool in the movies, but it kills pilots in real life and the ones that kills are the amateurs and the experienced professionals. It's called spatial disorientation. First, let me give you a definition.Spatial disorientation – It's the inability of a person to determine his true body position, motion, and altitude relative to the Earth or his surroundings. Both airplane pilots and underwater divers encounter this phenomenon. Teresa and I earned our PADI Open Water certifications in July 2001, which allowed us to dive 60 feet. PADI stands for Professional Association of Diving Instructors. We then went on an epic adventure in the Fiji Islands to vacation and SCUBA dive the Great Barrier Reef. This is one of the best diving spots on the planet. It was a life-changing experience. We saw incredible tropical fish, puffers, tiger sharks, all kinds of coral, and amazing sea life and creatures. You gain a respect for what's underwater. When a human becomes like a fish, you better respect that environment. We were trained to follow our instruments down to 60 feet, which basically included a buoyancy control device (a BCD), a regulator, a suit, and oxygen tank depth gauge. I learned to trust my depth gauge. It was crucial to follow my instruments as well as use my eyes and ears to decide to go up or down while diving. There's charts you follow so you don't get the bends. There are many more components. I'm just trying to keep it simple. I can remember a few times where I swam up, thinking I was going down. Even worse, I swam down, thinking I was going up. Thankfully, I learned to trust my instruments to correct my positioning under the water. When you are that deep, it is really hard to tell which way is up or down. It's scary, but it's true. I'm so thankful that I was taught to trust my instruments. Here's another example of spatial disorientation. My friend Royce Repka, owner of Double R Flight Academy out of Perkasie, Pennsylvania jumped on a phone call with me to explain the phenomenon of spatial disorientation from the flight instructor point of view. He's been doing this for nearly a decade, and he knows his stuff. So I'll paraphrase."Ken, think of it like this. Humans spend 99.99% of their time on the ground. It seems flat, right!? In reality, we are standing on a curved surface that is spinning and rotating. We can see the ground and we can visually see the horizon. The ground is down and the sky is up. That's obvious. You have reference points."I understood this from personal experience dealing with Lyme disease and vertigo. A physical therapist, who is trained in the inner ear for vertigo taught me that our eyes see the ground and the horizon and it communicates with our inner ear to balance your body in relation to the level of the earth. People with vertigo suffer dizziness because their inner ears are out of whack. Others can even get crystals that dangle in the inner ear. It can trick the senses to give you vertigo even when you're standing straight. And there are techniques that physical therapists can do to remove those crystals.Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website

Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this podcast, I'm joined by Lurch, and we cover everything you need to know about your Harley-Davidson sealed wheel bearings. We were replacing the rocker cover ad rocker cover housing gaskets on my 2014 Harley Street Glide Special. A step in the replacement procedures required us to rotate the rear tire. We noticed that my rear tire would move side to side and there was an audible "knocking" sound coming from the wheel as we manipulated it side to side. We removed the tire and found that one of the sealed wheel bearings was failing. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE You can get the Jims Bearing Tool we used in the video HERE. The rear wheel of model years 2008 to current touring models equipped with ABS require three non-ABS bearings (Harley Part #9276B) and one ABS bearing (Harley Part #9252A). The front wheel requires one non-ABS and one ABS bearing. There is o difference in bearing parts numbers for the front and the rear wheel. Non-touring model rear wheels only require one ABS and one non-ABS bearing. We sell All Balls Racing bearings in the Law Abiding Biker Store. You can shop them HERE. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! We know some guys that change their bearings at every single tire change, just for good measure. Harley says you should inspect your wheel bearings at every tire change. You do this by inserting a finger into the inner race of the bearing and rotating it in both directions. The bearing should rotate freely and smoothly. If you note any drag, rough rotation, or abnormal noises you should replace them. This week we had special guest Colleen Mimnaugh from KM Fitness & Nutrition on to talk with us about being as healthy as possible, especially while caring for our senior German Shepherds.Colleen has a Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics and a Master's Degree in Community Nutrition. She is also a certified National Academy of Sports Medicine personal trainer (NASM-CPT).Colleen and her sister-in-law are co-owners of KM Fitness & Nutrition, located at 613 Main St. in Perkasie, PA. They aim to help empower you to be happy, healthy, and well-balanced by offering small group classes, personal training, and nutritional counseling.Colleen highlights the importance of always taking care of ourselves by incorporating a physical routine, a balanced diet, and a positive mental outlook, three aspects of keeping us well-balanced. Of course, this is always important, especially as we care for our aging German Shepherds, who may need extra hands-on assistance as they continue their journey through life. The number 2 reason for an owner surrenders here at Woody's Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary is that the owner passed away or can no longer physically care for the dog due to health issues. The bottom line is that if we don't care for ourselves, how can we help them as they age?Colleen helps with that by giving detailed information in this podcast. She even created a workout routine for you to use, which we will post on social media, our website, and our #Lifewitholddogs newsletter for the week of (10/29/2022).Now, if you live near KM Fitness and Nutrition, you can stop in for a free first class with Colleen and learn the routine directly from her! That's a pretty generous offer, folks! Firm Foundation | Part 3 | Pastor Chris Heller “Why do we do that?” After an amazing Baptism Sunday this past week, we will plan to now finish our "Foundations" of Renew Bible Church series this Sunday. If you have ever visited multiple churches, you may have noticed that every local church seems to have its own unique methods, styles, and approaches. Why is that? Beyond obvious doctrinal differences, why is it that one church focuses on one thing, and another like-minded church does something often totally different? In our three-part "Foundations" series, we've talked about the ‘why' behind our first name “Renew,” and the addition of our middle name “Bible,” so now it's time to talk about our last name, “Church.” And, more specifically, what the dynamics will be that drive the mission, vision, and strategy of Renew Bible Church of Perkasie.

Jericho Walls | Part 14 | Pastor Chris Heller This Sunday, we will conclude our Jericho Walls series in Joshua chapters 23-24. Joshua is nearing the end of his life, and he desires to impart to Israel his vision for their future. Join us this week as we reflect on one of the most powerful verses in all of scripture. “Choose ye this day whom you will serve, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15) It will be a very fitting sermon as we look forward to our first Sunday as Renew Bible Church of Perkasie.
In this episode we sit down with Dr. Marion Mass, a Perkasie wife, mother, and pediatrician who's intimately involved in many Bucks County community organizations, including the Bucks County Health Improvement Partnership and the Bucks County Courier Times editorial board. With recruiting news slowing down in the middle of the February dead period, Greg Pickel and Ryan Snyder open up our Feb. 15 podcast looking back on a variety of Penn State-related NFL topics. In addition to Haley and Scott winning it all, there are a handful players in their original Penn State class, the Class of 2014, who are having great careers in the NFL. That list includes Mike Gesicki, Chris Godwin, Amani Oruwariye, Jason Cabinda, among others. Of course, Micah Parsons' emergence, winning Defensive Rookie of the Year, was also a positive for the Nittany Lions. The guys discuss how his success should only help Penn State on the recruiting trail in the months ahead. After that, they get into another Pennsylvania linebacker in Class of 2023 prospect Phil Picciotti. A four-star player from Pennridge, Picciotti recently finalized his spring visit schedule, which Ryan published Tuesday morning. They look at what's key for Penn State moving forward and a notable school who longer appears to be a serious contender with Perkasie native. The transfer portal was also discussed. Penn State recently started following Western Kentucky offensive lineman Cole Spencer on Twitter this week. An All-Conference USA selection in 2021, Spencer has a host of schools who also appear to be interested following his entry into the transfer portal. Ryan discusses who those programs are, as well as two other transfer portal targets in Raiqwon O'Neal and Tyler Steen. They finish out today's podcast discussing Penn State's rise in scholarship offers extended in recent years. During the first half of James Franklin's tenure, the Nittany Lions never surpassed 200 scholarship offers extended in a class. In 2022, they offered more than 360, and are on pace for even more in 2023. Why the change? Ryan gives his thoughts. The Supreme Court's right-wing majority seems prepared to deal a death blow to Roe v. Wade, sending women's autonomy and equality back generations. Rebecca Traister's article in New York Mag, “The Betrayal of Roe,” should be at the top of your reading list as we prepare for a protracted fight. The Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus has now been confirmed in five U.S. states: California, Colorado, Minnesota, New York, and Hawaii. Strap in, folks. Central Bucks School District is back in the New York Times following their two-part podcast on their explosive school board meetings about mask requirements and critical race theory. In the latest article, we get to see the real crises hitting the district regarding inadequate staffing, overcrowded classrooms, and declining resources - even in this fairly well-off, Bucks County school district. In the #PA01 in Bucks County, Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick is getting primaried from his right. Last week Perkasie resident and America First Party guy Bradley Lanning announced his challenge to Fitzpatrick. Yesterday, Trumpista Caroline Avery of Bristol threw her hat in the ring because she says Fitzpatrick "ignores the Trump agenda, ignores the Constitution, votes with the anti-American Democrat members, and basically (doesn't represent) anybody or anything but himself" in Congress. Bucks County Bytes is happy to introduce to you, Rise and Grind Cafe located in Perkasie, PA - a small community located in Bucks County and as everyone knows, people love Perkasie PA!! One of my favorite towns along with Sellersville, the sense of small-town community just demonstrates the strong-willed community support that it is well known for.Christina Rushton, owner of Rise and Grind Cafe persevered against the odds as she was only open 3 months before the pandemic hit. Listen to her story...warning as it made me tear up hearing what it was like as she managed to keep her store open, and her staff working. Come join us and listen as Rise and Grind Cafe struggled through the worst of 2020 only to realize what it's really like to have Perkasie stand behind them 1000 % - how the small-town community supported them and how they were one of the small businesses that only recently received help from the PPP program. It’s impeachment week. House managers presented incredibly compelling and powerful arguments that Trump incited insurrection. Montgomery County PA’s own, Bruce Castor, told stories of his childhood and made sure everyone knew that Nebraska was a very judicial thinking place, during what was an embarrassing ramble of an opening argument. Amazon hired anti-union consultant to try to destroy unionizing efforts in a Bessemer, Alabama fulfillment center. The consultant, Russell Brown, runs the anti-union firm RWP Labor which specializes in “maintaining a union free workplace.” Brown is also president of the Koch funded anti-union think tank, the Center for Independent Employees. 5,800 workers at the Alabama Amazon fulfillment center received mail-in ballots last Monday. If the majority of workers vote for the union, it would become the first unionized Amazon workplace in the country. The union, Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union, RWDSU, also represents 12,000 poultry workers in Alabama. According to a report in Wired, reports of the safety protections won by the unionized RWDSU poultry workers led workers at Amazon to reach out to the union to help with their own organizing efforts. House Democrats and the Congressional Progressive Caucus fought to include raising the $15 minimum wage in the COVID relief package. PA Proud! Pennsylvania ranks number two in the country when it comes to the number of residents who have been arrested from the January 6th Insurrection. Capital Region Stands Up and Pennsylvania Stands Up placed billboards around the Pennsylvania 10th Congressional District calling on Scott Perry to resign. Click on the link and look at the amazing design. Lt Governor John Fetterman officially announced his 2022 campaign for the United States Senate. The first week was a little rocky as archived video of Fetterman’s time as Mayor of Braddock circulated on social media. House and Senate Democrats continue their calls for an investigation into Senator Doug Mastriano’s role in the January 6th insurrection & for his expulsion from the Pennsylvania Senate. Pennsylvania House Republicans continue their voter fraud hearings and undermine the 2020 election. Pennsylvania Spotlight published a report this week highlighting House State Government Committee Chair Seth Grove’s role to undermine the 2020 election. Representative Grove is a board member with the American Legislative Exchange Council and he’s been working with ALEC and Koch Operatives to undermine the 2020 election since August 2019. Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta will be the Keynote speaker at today’s Gender and Sexual Minorities Conference at Kutztown University. 28 state legislators release a call to action for a People’s Budget. While praising much of Gov. Wolf’s new budget, the group writes that “as a Commonwealth, we need to reject austerity, wasteful spending and unstable revenue streams. We are guided by the urgent need to invest in people over big corporations. We believe any budget must focus on working people across the state and sthe systems and programs that can support workers to recuperate from this devastating pandemic that has touched all corners of our state.” Omar Ray is preparing to launch his campaign for Lehigh Valley County Commissioner on February 18 @ 7:00 pm. As a community activist and progressive, Ray hopes to be party of the Lehigh Valley’s growing list of progressive elected officials. PASSHE Chancellor Greenstein was back in the Capitol to update legislators about plans to consolidate several universities. Lots of spin and few specifics. F!@# Tom Brady. Free Will Brewing had to temporary limit access after an employee tested positive for COVID. They are back up and running in time for Valentines day and everyone there has tested negative for the virus. All this weekend Tre Locally Sourced will be parked out front on the main brewery in Perkasie with an scrumptious food menu. Want to know what to try? Here’s some new/recent releases: Blackberry Raspberry Mash - Sour Ale with Blackberry, Raspberry, Vanilla, and Milk Sugar. 7.5% ABV; 35 - American Double IPA brewed with a variety of our favorite hops from around the globe, a plentiful amount of oats, and a touch of honey malt for color and additional sweetness 8% ABV; and, Juice Money - Sour Ale with Plum, Black Currant, Cinnamon, Cardamom, Vanilla, and Milk Sugar. Ongoing collab with Imprint Beer Company.
2-2-21 Tonight at 9PM ET we'll be talking with Tom Repas. Tom has been on the show before, and we're having him back, as he's an absolute fountain of information! We're going to talk with Tom about mead, specifically mead in secondary. There is a lot that happens in secondary, like stabilization, clarification, backsweetening, adjuncts and adjustments. So we're Tom is a Master Beekeeper and owner of Canyon Rim Honey Bees, providing bees and honey in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Tom speaks on beekeeping all over the country, and has presented several times at the AMMA MeadCon on both beekeeping and meadmaking. Tom has won a large number of awards for his mead as well. Tom is a 4th generation beekeeper, and has been working with bees since he was a kid. He kept bees and sold the honey for extra money in high school. He went into professional beekeeping while he was still active as a medical doctor, and has developed a cross for bees that are gentle, overwinter well, and are mite resistant. On the mead side of things, Tom is a very talented mead maker who consistently wins medals with his meads, and has a skill for thinking outside the box for flavor profiles. His mushroom mead was the talk of the mead community for some time when he brought it out to taste. I got to try it, I was stunned at how good it was. Of course, Tom uses his own honey, as well as honeys from other providers and areas, and they're all good! Tom says his meads are 'ok'. We think they're better than that, lol. Hasan Malik's fascination with trees has been a constant for as long as he can remember. With a hand pruners or saw, he readily gave attention to the tree problems he encountered growing up in Northeast Philadelphia. Hasan is an ISA Certified Arborist and has a degree in Civil Engineering from Temple University. In 2008 Hasan founded Tree Northeast. The nonprofit organization plants street and yard trees throughout Northeast Philadelphia, engaging volunteers and residents by greening the community. To date, the organization has planted over 1000 trees and helps maintain them regularly. Tree Authority started in 2012 with the goal of providing superior tree care in the Southeastern Pennsylvania Region. The nursery began the following year in Perkasie, Pennsylvania. Hasan and his wife Tasneem continue to expand the nursery, which now stocks over 200 varieties of fruit, shade, and ornamental trees, including a diverse selection of natives. The Tree Authority's goal is to give trees the best chance to survive in an urban landscape right from the nursery. The nursery uses best practices to grow strong, healthy trees with virtually no girdling roots, no transplant shock, and the trees have visible root flares. Visiting the Tree Authority in Perkasie Pennsylvania makes evident Hasan's melding of horticulture and engineering. His innovations for container types, staking systems, irrigation techniques, and soil mixes consistently translate into healthy vigorous trees. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/plantatrilliontrees/support

It's a common feeling: you rush out of the house, late for work or to meet a friend, only to be struck by the fear that you forgot to turn your iron off. If you regularly get the feeling you left a particular appliance on, Lifehacker.com suggests snapping a quick photo of it before you leave the house. Do you often think you a burner on after making breakfast? Before you head out the door snap a pic if the knobs in the office position; should the feeling hit you on the way to work you can just glance at your phone as a reminder that all is well at home. For the millions of workers stuck at home through the coronavirus pandemic, the idea of moving to a Caribbean island for a year sounds like a dream. But now it could become a reality. Barbados is planning to introduce a 12-month visa that would allow remote workers to swap cramped city apartments for the island's white sandy beaches, blue sea and year-round sunshine. The scheme, known as the “Barbados Welcome Stamp,” is due to be launched in August and will be open to anyone earning more than $50,000. The scheme is designed to provide a much-needed boost to the island's tourist-dependent economy, while capitalizing on the shift in work patterns driven by the coronavirus pandemic… The Barbados Welcome Stamp would give visitors the right to work in the country for up to a year, regardless of where their employer is based. It's expected to cost $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a family visa — irrespective of how many children that family has. Participants in the scheme will be required to take out health insurance. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: FAMILY FINDS HONEY DRIPPING FROM THE WALLS _ A Pennsylvania family was dealing with a few thousand uninvited, messy house guests this week. The Isabell family (in Perkasie) discovered they had a big bee problem. On Friday night, after Tropical Storm Fay moved through the area, the family found dark stains dripping down their walls. They assumed it was storm damage, but got closer to see for themselves. It was sticky. And it smelled like honey. And that's what it was. The Isabells said they did a little detective work and traced the bees to the top of the house. They had seen a rogue bee now and then near the attic, but never thought much of it. They called in The Bee Man who came out for a thermal scan and an assessment. He came back later to extract the colony. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: DRIVER LOST CAR DURING DRUNKEN BENDER _ A Minneapolis resident is without wheels after he (or she) misplaced their 2007 Toyota Camry during a night out partying. A user on reddit posted: “I got too drunk, parked my car, and rode with a friend. We think it's somewhere in the northern parts of Hennepin County, parked on a residential street.” The poster lists a number to call if the wayward Toyota is spotted and offers an unspecified reward. The reddit user says by riding with a friend “I may have saved your life or your child's. But now I can't find my car. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: OPOSSUM FOUND STUCK IN SNAPPLE BOTTLE _ The Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia is reminding residents to properly dispose of trash and recycling after a small opossum was found stuck inside a Snapple bottle. This comes as trash pickup in the city has recently been delayed and has become a problem. Luckily, protection officers safely freed the animal. They say the opossum seems OK and will be headed to rehab. • https://www.facebook.com/acctphilly/posts/3376514149067697 (IMAGES) WACKY-BUT-TRUE: MAN SAWS HIS NEIGHBOR'S GARAGE IN HALF _ In Maine, a property dispute led one man to sawing his neighbor's garage in half. The two neighbors had been in a dispute over the property line for quite a while, however once a land surveyor determined that part of the garage was over the property line, he took a sawzall to the structure, cutting it right in half. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: ANTIFA? NO, ROOF REPAIR _ Scott Gudmundsen called police to report two masked “antifa guys” in his Colorado (Loveland)...
We lost such an important voice on the Left this week. Michael Brooks died suddenly on Monday at the age of 36. Michael was the co-host of the Majority Report and the host of his own show, The Michael Brooks Show, better known as TMBS. In so many ways, Michael was just getting going. Rest in Power, brother. Trump is calling for a surge of Federal forces into American cities, extending his “Portland Model” of brutal suppression of dissent and abduction of activists. Philly is one of the cities that Trump is targeting for the surge. DA Larry Krasner says he will pursue criminal charges against Federal officers who violate the Constitutional rights of activists or break city, state, or federal laws around policing. Meanwhile in Portland’s “Wall of Moms” has new allies. The Dads have gotten off the couch and join the Moms in the streets. They brought leaf blowers to the barricades to blow smoke from tear gas back in the direction of police. It turns out that material reality does register on some level. Trump announces that he is canceling the Republican convention in Jacksonville next month. The move comes after it was pretty clear he would be facing half-empty rooms, lawsuits, and strict health regulations. Trump said the timing of the event was not right given the explosion of coronavirus cases in Florida. Instead, he’s going to be giving a speech to a gathering in Charlotte, NC. Because NC doesn’t have any cases of COVID-19. Oh. Wait. That’s not right. This past Monday, 717 Restaurant Workers United held a “Takeout Takeover” at Cork and Fork in Harrisburg. The union organizing campaign is taking a community organizing approach to unionizing Cork and Fork workers and is looking to organize restaurant workers in the Harrisburg area. Monday’s action was supported by the DSA local. We’ll have organizers for 717 Restaurant Workers United and Harrisburg DSA on Monday’s Out d’Coup Live. Edinboro University is the latest PASSHE university to go all remote for the fall. At Kutztown University, organizers of the Healthy Campus Bill of Rights will be holding their second online town hall on August 5 as the beginning of the fall semester edges that much closer. Parents and school systems are starting to get anxious as the back-to-school season kicks into high gear. NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover is expected to launch next Thursday, July 30. This rover will be running on nuclear power. Let’s hope there’s no mishap in the launch. Don’t really need to have a nuclear-powered rover blow up over Florida right now. Or, really, ever. I stepped out of my little Perkasie bubble this week and ordered some beer from Levante Brewing Company. Levante is based in West Chester, PA and I’ll give you a review of Tropical Whip, a Pineapple Sunday IPA; D.O.P.E (Doctrine of Phonetic Equivalents), an awesome Triple IPA; and, Tickle Parts, a fantastic NE IPA. Don’t worry, I won’t neglect Free Will! Gotta represent. I’ll give you the breakdown of their latest offerings. And, Perkasie is getting a second brewery. Mystic Ways Brewing will be opening a brewery, taproom, and beer garden at 510.5 W. Walnut Street near the center of Perkasie.
TOP BATHROOM PET PEEVES 1. Not replacing the toilet paper when it runs out. 2. Leaving the seat up (women) and too many cosmetics on the counter (men). 3. Leaving toothpaste gobs in the sink. 4. Leaving spots on the mirror. 5. Leaving dirty clothes/towels on the floor. THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW YESTERDAY! • Consumers today encounter from 3,500 to 5,000 marketing messages per day, vs. 500 to 2,000 in the 1970s. • No wonder the British have a reputation for serving warm beer. Surprise tests in British pubs found that more than 40 percent of the pints were served warmer than 55 degrees Fahrenheit. One pint was 95 degrees. • Research shows that buying a 3-year-old used car and driving it as long as it is efficient saves 40 percent over buying a new car and doing the same. • About 157,000 American fathers — less than 1 percent of all dads — have elected to stay home and care for the kids full time. • Forty-seven percent of Americans say Hollywood movies aren't as good as they used to be. Thirty-three percent say they're getting better. • Eighty percent of college juniors and seniors claim they know how to take care of their money after they graduate. But 32 percent of them have missed a credit card payment and nearly a quarter have bounced a check. • Sharks get the headlines, but Bambi is the real killer. Shark attacks kill a dozen or fewer people in the United States each year while car-deer collisions kill an average of 130 a year. Wasps and bees kill nearly 50 Americans each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention WACKY-BUT-TRUE: FAMILY FINDS HONEY DRIPPING FROM THE WALLS _ A Pennsylvania family was dealing with a few thousand uninvited, messy house guests this week. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: MAN ALLEGEDLY TIED USED CONDOMS TO CARS _ (CAUTION) Police have made an arrest in connection to a series of indecent acts committed in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Throughout July, 74-year-old Peter Melegos allegedly tied used condoms to unoccupied vehicles in the parking lots of shopping centers around the city. This week Melegos was was arrested and charged. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: BUS DRIVER PUNISHED FOR ‘PIGS AND DOGS' SIGNS _ A bus driver in China was fined for posting insulting signs on the backs of seats. His signs read: “Please do not spit and litter … violators are as bad as pigs and dogs.” WACKY-BUT-TRUE: MUGGER WINS LAWSUIT AGAINST VICTIM _ A mugger was beaten by a man he attempted to rob in China. But the mugging victim has been slapped with two months in criminal detention and a lawsuit. When the mugger failed to rob his victim of a smartphone, the victim and his buddies chased him down and punched and kicked him. The mugger filed a report with police the next day and one of the guys will spend two months in jail. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: POLICEMAN ACCUSED OF STEALING BATTERIES _ Police in Vietnam say one of their officers was punished after he stole batteries from 154 impounded vehicles and motorcycles. The vehicles had been impounded for various traffic violations and the officer decided he'd steal their batteries and re-sell them. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: SMELLY TENNIS SHOES SPARK ALERT _ Passengers got off a train in Scotland after an unattended piece of luggage sparked a full-scale security alert. The suspicious item turned out to be a cardboard box containing smelly, moldy tennis shoes.
Trump threatens to call out the military to suppress protests demanding justice for George Floyd and an end to run-away police violence. In a speech from the Rose Garden, Trump called protesters “terrorists.” In a call to the nation’s Governors, Trump urged them to crack down hard on protesters. In a surprise move, Trump told journalists that he has put U.S. Army General Mark Milley “in charge” of ending the protests. Former Defense Secretary General Jim Mattis - the guy that Trump used to love to call “Mad Dog” to boost his testosterone levels - issued a scathing rebuke of Trump’s desire to call out the military to “dominate” protesters. Mattis wrote, "Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens —much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside." George Bush came out after Trump this week. He beat Nancy Pelosi to the punch. Why? Oh, yeah, the Democrats are on vacation. Los Angeles mayor, Eric Garcetti, announced that the Los Angeles Police Department will see a budget cut between $100 and $150 million instead of an increase. The money from the LAPD cuts will be invested in communities of color instead. The city will invest in “jobs, education, and healing,” according to Mayor Garcetti. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the most prominent member of the White House COVID-19 task force, told the American Medical Association that the U.S. should have 100 million doses of coronavirus vaccine by the beginning of 2021. Protests to end police violence and systemic racism exploded across the state. Hundreds of people marched through small towns like Souderton, PA and thousands flooded the streets in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and other larger cities across the Commonwealth. This week showed that pigs can actually fly. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney took down the 2000 lb Frank Rizzo statue. In a huge win for Philadelphia progressive activists, Nikil Saval defeated Democratic Party establishment-backed candidate Larry Farnese in the primary for Pennsylvania’s First Senate District. Nikil Saval is the cofounder of Reclaim Philadelphia, a community activist, a DSA member, and an editor for N+1. Saval ran a campaign right out of the Bernie Sanders campaign platform and is now looking at a double-digit win of Farnese who has held the seat since 2009. Bernie Sanders pulled in 20% of the vote in Pennsylvania. But Nikil Saval was not the only big news. It looks like six other incumbents were shown their walking papers in Tuesday’s Primaries. Daylin Leach is behind by nearly twenty points to Amanda Cappelletti, a candidate endorsed by Elizabeth Warren. Summer Lee crushes her primary opponent Chris Roland by a 75-25 margin. It looks like the building trades owes Summer an apology for wasting over a hundred thousand dollars to run someone against her out of spite. Progressive Emily Kinkead looks like she is going to oust conservative Democrat Adam Ravenstahl in House District 20 in the Pittsburgh area. Ravenstahl has frequently voted with conservative Republicans, especially when it comes to restricting women’s access to abortion and necessary medical care. Rick Krajewski, a West Philadelphia organizer, is narrowly ahead of Jim Roebuck in PA House District 188. Roebuck has held the seat since 1985. Krajewski was backed by Bernie Sanders, the PA Chapter of the National Organization for Women, National DSA, Sunrise Philadelphia, and the AFT Local 2026 among a long list of endorsers. And as of today, all counties in Pennsylvania have moved into either the Green Phase or the Yellow Phase. Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lehigh, Northampton, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties were the last counties to remain in the Red Phase. They move to Yellow today. Whitey’s on the Moon...OK, not the Moon, but the International Space Station. SpaceX and NASA successfully launched two astronauts to the ISS from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center last Saturday. It was the first crewed launch from U.S. soil since the Obama administration scrapped the Space Shuttle program in 2009. The fact the launch took place during some of the biggest civil rights uprisings in nearly a century has us relistening to some Gil Scott-Heron. Looks like the whole 2024 Moon settlement plan hit a bit of a setback as SpaceX’s Starship Prototype exploded during a static-fire test of the massive rocket’s engines. The Menzingers just released a new song, America Pt. 2. All proceeds from the song go to community bail funds. You can listen to and buy the song at bandcamp.com. And, while we’re at it, Bob Mould just released a new song called “American Crisis.” It show that the anger from Gen X runs deep. Thanks to my friend Stu Ross for sending me that. Free Will Brewing is opening up outdoor seating at their main Perkasie location and at Peddler’s Village tomorrow, Saturday, June 6. They had to push back today’s opening due to storms and flood warnings. They are turning a field next to the brewery into a beer garden with a pop-up bar, bathrooms, and sanitizing stations, in addition to our usual front yard space and courtyard. Free Will also has a new release for the first time in a while. This one is a collab with Imprint Beer Company. It’s the Strawberry Lemonade Radfahrer - They took their Cream Ale base and mixed it with some slightly tart lemonade before a hefty addition of strawberry purée to top the whole thing off. 3.9% ABV.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency this week as two dams collapsed following days of exceptionally heavy rain. Thousands of residents had to be evacuated and the floodwaters were comingling with containment ponds at a Dow Chemical plant near the town of Midland. Parts of Midland and other areas were under 5 feet of water. The company that owned the dams - Boyce Hydro - was chronically noncompliant with the State’s demands to maintain and update the dam. On the other side of planet, Super Cyclone Amphan devastated parts of India and Bangladesh. The storm was the strongest cyclone ever recorded in the Bay of Bengal with sustained winds of 165 mph. The Indian city of Kolkata was devastated, killing at least 84 people as of last night. At least six fruit packing worksites are on strike in Yakima County, WA. The county has the highest rate of COVID-19 cases on the West Coast and workers are striking over safer working conditions and an additional $2/hour in hazard pay. As we’ve seen in the meatpacking industries, immigrant workers work at high-speed, shoulder-to-shoulder in less than adequate working conditions. The companies have not addressed testing issues or safety conditions. Oregon Republicans nominate Jo Rae Perkins as their candidate for U.S. Senate. Perkins is a QAnon conspiracy theorist. In her primary victory speech Tuesday night, Perkins said: ““We’re in this together. It’s all for one, so let’s make it happen. As all of us Q people like to say: ‘Where we go one, we go all.” Perkins beat her closest opponent by more than 50,000 votes. She’ll face Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley in November. In a video posted to Twitter earlier Tuesday, Perkins looks into the camera and says: “I stand with President Trump. I stand with Q and the team. Thank you Anons and thank you patriots, and together we can save our Republic.” That tweet is now removed. Georgia Republicans cancel election for the state Supreme Court. Now, Republican Governor Brian Kemp gets to take his pick of right-wing justices to fill the seat. The VP guessing game has begun! We’re glad cable news will have something to obsess over and give them a little break from having to cover the impact of COVID-19 and our decimated public infrastructure. Cambridge University won’t return to face-to-face lectures until summer 2021. On the flip side, NYU is all gung ho about getting back on campus this fall. With COVID-19 as cover, Kean University will eliminate majors in music, sustainability sciences, theater, and economics. Ohio University announces it will cut 53 faculty, 94 administrators, and about 140 AFSCME workers. And Trump says he’s taking hydroxychloroquine. Who knows if that’s even true. Sean took some pictures last week. ReOpenPA was reenacting Sweeney Tood outside the Capitol. Daryl Metcalfe was pretty busy this week. First he continued his storied tradition of introducing impeachment resolutions against any Democratic official he hates. This time it’s Governor Wolf. And he is promising to hold his yearly gun rally on the capitol steps on June 8th with or without Wolf’s permission. This year’s theme is to Stand Your Ground Against Socialism. Governor Wolf vetos a bill that would have stopped any new regulations in PA until after his COVID-19 disaster emergency declaration expires. The bill was proposed by Republican State Senator David Argall seemed designed to stop any environmental regulations impacting the oil and gas companies and other corporations. Some good news coming out of Harrisburg! Republicans living in competitive districts are warming up to the idea of legalizing marijuana in the Commonwealth due to the impending budget shortfall. Kutztown Univerisity is plowing ahead with plans to return in the fall. As details of the plan begin to leak, it’s that much more important to pay attention. Wait until you hear one of the administration’s student housing plans. We’ll get to that in a little detail. A faculty union task force is developing an alternative plan that would take students, faculty, and staff’s health and safety into account. Imagine that. In the best space news of the week, someone at the National Museum, of the U.S. Airforce at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, taped a picture of Steve Carell over the official picture of Chief of Space Operations Gen. John Raymond. The trickster also replaced Raymond’s bio with that of Gen. Mark R. Naird, Carell’s character in Netflix’s new series “Space Force,” which premieres May 29th. A little over a week before Space X is scheduled to launch two NASA astronauts from U.S. soil for the first time since the Obama administration scuttled the Space Shuttle program in 2011, the head of human space flight at NASA, Douglas Loverro, abruptly resigned. According to reporting in the Washington Post, apparently the resignation came after Loverro broke a rule in the process of awarding contracts to Blue Origin, Space X, and Dynetics to get humans back to the moon. In the never-ending evidence that elections have consequences, Wednesday evening the right-wing dominated Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Governor Tony Evers’s stay-at-home order unconstitutional. Following the ruling, the Tavern League of Wisconsin told all its members to open their pubs asap. Soon social media was filled with pictures of packed bars with zero social distancing. The grand experiment has begun. Governor Evers could only say, “We’re in the Wild West now.” Dr. Anthony Fauci - one of the few trusted voices on the White House’s coronavirus task force, testified remotely before the Senate this week. Fauci told Senators that a spike in deaths should be expected if states begin to reopen without the proper protocols and protections in place. Public higher education is on the chopping block across the U.S. as disaster capitalist politicians use the cover of the COVID-19 pandemic to institute mass layoffs and budget cuts. The deepest cuts so far may be those at Missouri Western State University, which may make it easier for other state university systems to do the same. Shanna Danielson, who is running for State Senate in the 31st district, got a big endorsement this week from Auditor General Eugene DePasquale. In his endorsement, DePasquale “Shanna is smart, hard-working and brings the highest level of integrity. She will be a state senator we can depend on to lead, for our families and our community.” Danielson is taking on corporate shill, Mike Regan, and is running strong on her support for working families and a state government that focuses on people first. Pennsylvania is not immune from the deep cuts in higher education. Local faculty union presidents at Kutztown University and Cheyney University were notified that their administrations are considering eliminating adjunct, tenure-track, and tenured faculty. Of course, Raging Chicken has been covering PASSHE’s deceptive budget and accounting practices for years. As the state budget battles prepare to heat up, it does not look so good for Pennsylvania’s 14 state-owned universities. Trump visited a medical equipment supplier in the Lehigh Valley on Thursday. His landing at the Lehigh Valley International Airport was greeted with a huge caravan of cars protesting Trump’s visit. The action was organized by Make the Road. One of the signs from the caravan summed up the message: “Trump Failed 3,943 Pennsylvanians dead from COVID.” Of course, there were also dozens of Trumpistas lining Industrial Boulevard in Upper Macungie Township. Most were not wearing masks. And, of course, today is the big ReOpen PA rally in Harrisburg, underway as I record this. Early images look like every other Trump rally. My favorite sign so far is “Fear is a Liar.” A 24-year-old man in Perkasie, PA - yes, my neck of the woods - punched a female store clerk in the face several times after she insisted he wears a mask in the store. NASA researchers have identified a string of lava tubes in the Hellas Planitia area of Mars that may prove promising for a future Martian base. Lava tubes would help protect astronauts from the relentless solar radiation. One of the largest pieces of space junk landed back on Earth on Monday. The 18-ton empty core stage from a Chinese rocket launched on May 5, passed directly over Los Angeles and Central Park in NYC before landing in the Atlantic Ocean. Free Will Brewing rolled out its new online store and began to ship to all PA addresses. Sun Servants - that tasty Helles Lager - is back in stock and ready for shipping. I’ll have a report back on their Sweet Cherry Vanilla Mash. You can check out their story at FreeWillBrewing.store. You can order online and pick up at the main brewery in Perkasie, or have them ship it to you. Get together with some friends and order $125 or more and you’ll get free shipping too.
I planned on speaking about sours with John Stemler, Co-Founder of Free Will Brewing in Perkasie, PA, but we dove deep into operating a brewery, the changing beer landscape and the logistics of shipping beer to Japan. This is a great discussion about management, beer quality, and science. New Mango Wheat is out! and State-wide Delivery available now! Head to www.freewillbrewing.com
Means testing will not get us where we need to be and it will help Trump win the election. Italy’s coronavirus deaths pass China. California Governor Gavin Newsom issues statewide order to stay at home, effective last night. Senate Intelligence Committee Chair, Richard Burr new about the coming economic crash in early February and dumped between $628,000 and $1.7 million in stock. NPR released a secret audio recording of Burr telling a room of big money donors about the coming catastrophe on February 27th. He wasn’t alone. Sen. Kelly Loeffler, a Georgia Republican, started selling off her and her husbands’ stock back on January 24th. That was, according to the Daily Beast, “the very day that her committee, the Senate Health Committee, hosted a private, all-senators briefing from administration officials, including the CDC director and Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, on the coronavirus.” Severe storms hitting the central U.S. Gov. Wolf calls for all “non-life-sustaining” businesses to close down. PA House Republicans and Mike Turzai go off the rails. The house speaker is pushing for the expansion of cyber education and cyber charter schools while questioning Governor Tom Wolf’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. Eight Oaks Farm Distillery switches production from spirits to hand sanitizer. Eight Oaks is a Veteran-Owned, Family-Run, Farm-Grown distillery in New Tripoli, PA Free Will sets up take out service. We are accepting walk-in orders but would like to encourage everyone to utilize our brand new online store to make any purchases.” https://www.freewillbrewing.com/store
We are inching closer to Iowa and it’s getting nasty online. Bernie tops the national polls for the first time, seems to be widening his lead in New Hampshire, and it’s a toss-up in Iowa between Bernie and Biden. Hillary says she won’t commit to supporting Sanders if he wins the Democratic nomination. Then she walks her comments back a bit. NYT makes an endorsement fail. Jane McAleavy was on the Majority Report talking about organizing the workplace and forming unions for direct action and power (NOTE: My apologies for saying "Katie" McAleavy...I read "Katie" from the next line). Her new book, A Collective Bargain: Unions, Organizing, and the Fight for Democracy. Katie Halper on Michael Moore’s Rumble podcast. The quiet anti-semitism of the anti-Bernie media. Impeachment continues. Videos of former Lt Gov Mike Stack have been making the rounds. Turns out he moved California and started doing standup under the name Mikey Stacks And Mike Turzai announced he’s not running for reelection in 2020. Kutztown University looking at cutting up to 63 faculty members. That is based upon an analysis released to the faculty union last Friday while we were recording this podcast. Star Trek’s Picard debuted on CBS All Access yesterday. Love it!. I Don’t care what Entertainment Weekly says. I’ll be on the “Emmie Knows” show on Kutztown University Radio next Wednesday from 10-11:00. Impeachment begins. Lev Parnas takes us inside the Trump cult. We’ve now entered the era of mob reality TV. Parnas turns up the volume and sings like a canary. It was the week that the Democratic Party establishment has been waiting for - the Great Bernie-Warren Fight. Joe Biden says he’d consider Kamala Harris as a running mate. Kitchen’s Cabinet launches. Charter Appeals Board meets again. It’s all about the grift. Kutztown University raises class sizes in order to keep adjunct faculty at part-time. So much for the lasting effects of interest-based bargaining. I’m sticking with my prediction that now that APSCUF and PASSHE have settled a long-term contract, the ax will begin to fall. PASSHE budget hearings will be held in the State Senate on February 20 and in the State House on March 3. Back from Seattle. Huge shout out to the great folks at Seattle Beer Company. Free Will has some new releases from their sour cellar. Erma Xtra - Foudre fermented farmhouse ale brewed in collaboration with our friends from all over Forest & Main Brewing Company, Right Proper Brewing Company, Sapwood Cellars Brewery, and Brotherton Brewing Company. 8.4% ABV. We'd love your feedback about new directions for Raging Chicken's Out d'Coup podcast for 2020 and beyond. Can you take a minute to give us your feedback? If you can, click here: RAGING CHICKEN 2020 AND BEYOND FEEDBACK FORM Formal impeachment hearings began in the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday with a panel of four Constitutional lawyers discussing grounds for impeachment. It was quite a civics lesson. Yesterday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi holds a formal press conference to call on House Committees to draft articles of impeachment. Pelosi was quite serious during her announcement but got pissed when a journalist asked her if she hated Trump. That was apparently one step too far. She’s a Catholic, for Christ’s sake, she don’t hate nobody. The UN Climate Change Summit - aka COP 25 - being held in Madrid got underway this week. A new report released by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) ahead of the Summit shows that the world has failed to meet goals set in the Paris Agreement. Instead, there was a 1.5% increase in emissions. The report is frank, “The summary findings are bleak. Countries collectively failed to stop the growth in global [greenhouse gas] emissions, meaning that deeper and faster cuts are now required." We are not on track to 4 degrees Celsius of warming by 2100. The Paris Agreement called for no more than 2 degrees, while last year’s UN climate report stated that anything beyond 1.5 degrees will produce catastrophic results. Emissions must now be cut by 7.6% per year beginning in 2020 to stave off the worst impacts. The latest polling in California shows both Warren and Biden losing some support, while Bernie and Buttigieg gain. Bernie is now edging out Warren by two percentage points (24% to 22%) - a statistical tie. Buttigieg picks up 6 percentage points, while Biden loses 6 points. It looks like the biggest loser in Buttigieg’s surge is Biden. Biden barely edges out Mayor Pete for third place - 14% - 12%. Keep in mind this poll was taken before Kamala Harris’s big announcement that she was dropping out of the race. The latest polls have some good news for Bernie, concerns for Warren, and the sounds of desperation from Biden’s camp. Mayor Pete’s little engine that could is still chugging along. Latest Iowa polls have Buttigieg 26% out front with Sanders at 18%, Warren at 17%, and Biden at 12%; New Hampshire has Bernie in first 26% with Buttigieg next at 22% with Warren and Biden tied at 14% Nevada has Biden ahead with 24% with Bernie and Warren closing at 18%. Buttigieg remains behind at 8%. And in Biden’s one strong state, South Carolina, the latest poll has Biden at 33% - 20 points ahead of Warren at 13%, Sanders at 11%, and Buttigieg at 6%. New directions for Raging Chicken and Out d'Coup in 2020. Podcast changing format a bit. Interviews. Guests. Members Only content on Patreon. Kentucky Governor’s mansion turns blue! Looks like Trump’s “Read the Transcripts” rally in Lexington on the eve of election day didn’t work out so well for the Republican incumbent. Before corporate Democrats join calls to “move to the center,” they would be wise to remember that the teacher strikes gave Democrats the Governor’s mansion, not some dishwater appeal to bipartisanship. Virginia goes Democrat from House to the Governor’s office. Gordon Sondland, Trump’s EU Ambassador, flips on his boss. The transcripts are scathing. And, Sondland wasn’t the only person that saw transcripts of their depositions released to the public. A giant “uh-oh” was heard coming from the general direction of the White House. Ayanna Presley endorses Elizabeth Warren for president. Is this a “split” in the Squad or evidence that progressives are beginning to deepen their roots in the Democratic Party? Nancy Pelosi goes to Bloomsberg News to say she’s not a fan of Medicare for All. That’s should be like a bat signal to all progressives that even if we win big in 2020, we’ll be in for a fight with the Democratic Party leadership. Another billionaire prepares to enter the presidential race as a Democratic hopeful. Yes, Michael Bloomberg will demonstrate to the world - just like Tom Steyer - how much money you can burn through to stroke your ego. Oh, yeah, and Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, is jumping in the race to get his old Senate seat in Alabama. Looks like the biggest threat to his seat will be...Trump. Trump said jokingly he’d move to Alabama to run against Sessions himself. Bill Fletcher, Jr. takes to the pages of In These Times to once again make the case for social justice unionism. In the wake of militant labor victories, business unionism still dominates the leadership of many small and large unions Oh, yeah, and public impeachment hearings begin next Wednesday and House Democrats are looking to a vote on impeachment before Christmas! Philadelphia votes a candidate from the Working Families Party to City Council. It’s the first time a candidate not from one of the major parties wins a seat on the council. Congrats to Kendra Brooks. Over half of Pennsylvania’s population now live in counties that are controlled by Democrats. Democrats swept every open seat in Delaware and Chester counties and then took control of Bucks, Lehigh and Monroe counties. Will these victories lead to a PA Dem Trifecta in 2020? Scranton gets its first-ever woman mayor! Paige Cognetti, who ran as a Berniecrat independent, won the special election for mayor last night. Her campaign slogan, “Paige Against the Machine,” will now bring progressive politics to NEPA. She cut her teeth writing a scathing report of corruption in Scranton’s school district for PA Auditor General Eugene Depasquale. APSCUF leadership begins its PR push to persuade members to vote in favor of the new contract next week. Many questions remain as to what APSCUF leadership’s embrace of the new PASSHE Chancellor and “interest-based bargaining” will mean for the organizational gains achieved as part of the union’s 2016 strike. Raging Chicken still awaiting the results of our Right to Know request about legionella bacteria found in multiple buildings across Kutztown University’s campus. Elon Musk makes the case that Space X’s new Starship could cost as little as $2 million per launch...way below the cost of even small rockets. Boeing trying to stay relevant in the race to get back to the moon. The Aerospace goliath presented NASA with a plan for a simplified “Human Lander System” (HLS) that will make use of the much delayed, still to be operational “Space Launch System.” The director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, Army Lt. General Robert Ashley, painted a dark picture of near-future real space wars as Russia and China are rapidly developing weapons to be deployed in space. He made the remarks as part of his keynote speech at CyberSat 2019. Are we actually going to get a space hotel in the near future? The Gateway Foundation is making moves. Free Will releases: Available on draft and in cans this Saturday at both Perkasie and Peddler's Village locations. We’ll also have all of this week’s releases at the Wrightstown Farmers Market Saturday morning. Plum Cinnamon Mash - Sour Ale brewed with plum purée, cinnamon, vanilla, and milk sugar. 7.5% ABV. Sweet Cherry Apricot Mash - Sour Ale brewed with sweet cherry purée, apricot purée, vanilla, and milk sugar. 7.5% ABV A special Wednesday release, this past week for this year’s Special Cookie. Impeachment. Will the Democrats try really, really hard to drop the ball? Which way forward? What’s up with AFT President, Randy Weingarten, backing away from Medicare for All. CNBC reports that Democratic Wall Street donors may back Trump if Warren is nominated. UN Climate Report released to Monumental change already hear for the worlds oceans. Meanwhile, Trump addresses UN Assembly to say the future does not belong to the Globalists. And that’s after taking to Twitter to mock 16-year-old climate activist, Greta Thunberg. Thousands of janitors from SEIU 32BJ shut down Rittenhouse Square yesterday to let residents know that their contract is set to expire on October 15th and that they’re ready to strike. Solidarity event with UAW strikers in Langhorne. Gov. Tom Wolf getting behind legalizing pot. Climate crisis and the workplace. If we accept the urgency for action to combat climate change, how do we use collective power in our workplaces to demand action? Kind of like Green New Deal laboratories. In August, Jared Odessky of Data for Progress released a short report focusing on what unions can do - and are already doing - to win green contracts focusing on targeting their workplaces for climate action. This week’s release from Free Will: Hello, From Somewhere is a Hefeweizen brewed with a near 50/50 split of wheat and local Deer Creek Malthouse pilsner malt. Sad closing of Down to Earth Cafe and Bread Box Bakery in Perkasie.

The Mueller Report drops and, yes, it’s pretty damning for the Trump administration. The biggest challenge for Democratic party leadership now seems to be how to continue to fan the flames of Russian outrage while not pulling the impeachment trigger. But will calls for impeachment growing sharper by the day, you’ve gotta wonder what kind of political gymnastics they will perform now that they have everything they said they needed to call for impeachment hearings. Still, Democratic House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer prefers to punt, instead of exercising the House’s Constitutional oversight authority. Bernie Sanders puts Fox on its heels at a town hall in Bethlehem. Later in the week, he said he’ll ban fracking and all new fossil fuel projects. Elizabeth Warren calls for a ban on all new fossil fuel leases offshore and on public lands. And, I’ve gotta agree with Doug Henwood on this one. Writing in Jacobin, Henwood’s article title says it all, “I Can’t Believe Elizabeth Warren Is Losing to These Guys.” Kirsten Gillibrand uses Ilhan Omar to stake out her “both-siderism” creds. But when it comes down to it, Gillibrand is right in line with the official party line as Democratic party leadership is failing horribly when it comes to responding to attacks on Ilhan Omar. It seems only the most progressive legislators have got Omar’s back. Stockton, California begins an 18 month pilot of a University Basic Income for 130 residents. On the brink of the first strike in Rutgers history, the faculty win a huge contract, proving once again that organizing for power pays off. NextGen is doing some serious organizing on the ground in Pennsylvania. Activists are getting students at Penn State registered to vote ahead of a special election in the PA 12. While a win for Democrat Marc Friedenberg will be an uphill battle, NextGen already has its sights set on 2020. On Wednesday of this week, NextGen held a town hall on West Chester’s campus with U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan. It was the season finale of Star Trek Discovery last night and launch of the final season of Game of Thrones last Sunday night. It’s been quite a week. I began watching Netflix’s new series, “Our Planet,” featuring the iconic narration of David Attenborough. It is a beautiful and devastating nature show that places climate change front and center. The BBC also aired David Attenborough’s special, “Climate Change - The Facts” on Thursday. Naomi Klein, and Avi Lewis team up with The Intercept to release “A Message from the Future with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,” a beautifully animated letter from an imagined future in which the Green New Deal passed and has been put into practice. Free Will releases a brand new fruited IPA for you this Saturday, 4/20. Sleight is a fruited Double IPA with passionfruit, coconut, and a touch of vanilla. 9.1% ABV. Trump breaks the news that windmills cause cancer. Oh, and there are oranges in the Mueller report. Socialists win big in Chicago! Chicago DSA members will now hold 10% of Chicago’s alderman positions. Why don’t you put that in your pipe and smoke it, Rham? Working Families Party-backed candidates win big in Milwaukee's school board elections. They now control 5 of the 9 seats on the board. That’s good news in the wake of the loss of a State Supreme Court seat in the badger state. White power symbols found after fire destroys part of the Highlander Research and Education Center outside of Knoxville, TN. Highlander was instrumental in training activists for the civil rights movement and has been one of the most important organizing institutes in U.S. history. Bernie Sanders leads the field of presidential candidates in fundraising with $18.2 million dollars. MSNBC’s Kasie Hunt tweeted out this week, “If we used the metrics of ANY other year and applied them to Bernie he would be called a frontrunner ( came in 2nd last time; almost won Iowa, won NH; near the top of early polls; huge fundraising numbers; proven appeal to the base of the party) And yet he gets ignored. It’s absurd” As “Mayor Pete” Buttigieg’s presidential campaign shows surprisingly good fundraising numbers, a new poll shows that nearly 70% of Americans are just fine with a gay presidential candidate. It was not such a good week for former Vice President Biden who’s rapidly earning the nickname of “Creepy Uncle Joe.” Pam Iovino defeats D. Raja in the special election for the PA 37th Senate District. It’s the first major red to blue flip for the 2020 cycle that puts the Pennsylvania Senate in play. Iovino withstood attack ads linking her to AOC, Bernie, the Green New Deal, Universal Healthcare, support for abortion, and socialism. Mike Turzai was caught calling pro-choice advocates “Nazis” at a Real Alternatives awards dinner and when called out on it, he said that his quote was “taken out of context.” A new poll shows that Pennsylvanians are become increasingly concerned about climate change. What do you say, Governor Wolf? Still going with the “drill, baby, drill,” approach? Bernie Sanders agrees to do a Fox News town hall in Bethlehem, PA on April, 15th. Yeah, that’s tax day. The Sanders Campaign also hired Becca Rast from Jess King’s campaign to run Sanders’ national field campaign. Congratulations to the faculty and staff at the Community College of Philadelphia who finally have a tentative agreement after three long years of negotiations. It was only when they were on the brink of striking that the City got serious about negotiations. The Robots are coming...Well, they’ve actually been here for a while in Giant Food Stores across PA. But they will begin arriving in “waves” soon, according to Giant’s parent company Ahold Delhaize USA. UFCW is not fooled by the company’s claims that the robots will not lead to the loss of jobs. In December, Walmart rolled out their 360 autonomous, mini-Zamboni-like robots who clean floors and “collect data.” According to a report by McKinsey Global Institute, as many as $800 million people may lose their jobs to robots by 2030. What do you think, can we get that UBI, like yesterday? Yang, 2020. Looks like the Lunar South Pole is a potential landing site for NASA’s 2024 humans-back-to-the-moon goal. Why? Protection from radiation and promising potential for water ice. That means...rocket fuel. Yes, Kim Stanley Robinson’s Red Moon officially needs to be required reading. Despite last weeks ISS wardrobe malfunction which prevented the history all-women space walk, NASA says another medium-sized space suit not likely anytime soon. If you’re getting a little uneasy about inaction on climate change, you might be comforted...or horrified...by this week’s United Nations roundtable about creating “Floating Cities” to handle mass refugees and the flooding of coastal cities. And, you bet there’s a company called Oceanix - no, this is not Peter Theil’s baby. They have plans. “He who controls the spice, controls the universe!” Totally psyched that Dune is going into production. The new version of Frank Herbert’s epic sci-fi series will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, who did an awesome job with the 2017 sequel of Blade Runner. Sean has been playing with his new toy with awesome results. Shout out to my colleague Sandi Leonard and her co-creators for their really cool role playing game, MajiMonsters. It's like a cross between Dungeons and Dragons and Pokemon. Very cool. The game is available from DriveThru RPG after a successful Kickstarter campaign. Free Will releasing “Acai Mash” on Saturday. This beer is brewed with 850 pounds of acai puree, milk sugar, and vanilla. It comes in at 7.5% ABV and will be available in 4 packs at both the Perkasie and Peddler’s Village locations. If you’re looking for something a little different, you might want to check out Free WIll’s special event, a “Toast to Cheese,” next Wednesday, April 10 as part of their cellar pairing series. There will be 4 courses of fine, locally produced cheese from Calkins Creamery (Honesdale, PA). Each accompanied by a delectable bite of specialty toast and, of course, some of our favorite brews.

Marilyn will be the keynote speaker for the event. Visit SistersU.org for information and to buy tickets.
Mueller Report dropped and it's over 300 pages, but we just get to see the four-page Barr Report. Trump says he’s vindicated. Adam Schiff nearly explodes. And Rachel Maddow doubles down on Russia, Russia, Russia. Stacy Abrams will not be Joe Biden's VP nominee because “who wants to run for second place” AOC brings the wrecking ball to Republicans who are playing games with our climate. AOC will be on Chris Hayes’s show on MSNBC at 8 pm tonight for a special on the Green New Deal. Live from the Bronx. And polls continue to show that the GND is super popular with people from coast to coast. Just in time too. On Monday, a new report from the International Energy Agency shows that the world’s energy demands grew by 2.3 percent this past year and a fleet of relatively young coal plants located in Asia led the way toward a record for emissions from coal-fired power plants — exceeding 10 billion tons of carbon dioxide “for the first time,” according to the report. Senator Mike Lee puts on a performance that may just win an award for all time stupid. And juvenile. And, well, pretty disgusting when you get down to it. When you start your show with a painting of Ronald Reagan on a velocirapter shooting a machine gun, you need to check yourself. Or at least quit your job. The Center of Investigative Reporting gets its hands on an hour-long recording of oil executives celebrating and laughing after Trump appointed the lawyer from American Petroleum Association of America to the Department of the Interior. Trump admin is trying to shut down Obamacare. Facebook says it’s going to ban white nationalists and white supremacists from the platform. We’ll see. The DNC blacklists consultant groups who choose to work with primary challengers. There’s a special election in the PA Senate’s 37th district this week. Pam Iovino is running against the uber-rich Republican D. Raja. This seat was vacated by Guy Reschenthaler’s Congressional victory and Democrats are looking to pick this seat up. Daryl Metcalfe invites climate deniers, I mean “skeptics,” from Das Heartland Institute to speak in front of the house environmental committee. Meanwhile, the biggest takeaways from the hearing were that 1) Leanne Krueger doesn't give a fuck about your self-published climate denial books; and, 2) that climate deniers find the term “climate deniers” derogatory. State Rep Stephanie Borowicz was seconds away from seeing snakes coming from the capitol dome and speaking in tongues as she gave an extremely racist and Islamophobic opening prayer on the day that Pennsylvania's first Muslim woman, Movita Johnson-Harrell, was sworn into the house. We get some hate mail, too! Minutes after that Rep Borowicz went off to the Health committee to vote on taking money from poor people because Jesus always said: “blessed are the rich, for they shall inherit every damn thing they want.” See Matthew 5:3-12, aka the Beatitudes Fallout from the prayer has Democrats asking for a censure of Borowicz and her Islamophobic prayer while Metcalfe is asking to censure Democrats because of their censure. Big rally in the state Capitol for the #PAPromise - tuition free college in PA. Mike Pence tries to channel Kennedy’s moon landing speech, saying that NASA will speed up its plan to return Americans to the moon by 2024. Maddow briefly covers the announcement and misses a bigger picture. Today NASA was supposed to make history with the first-ever all women space walk. They had to cancel because the didn’t the right sized space suits. NASA will introduce a new mini-helicopter for its Mars 2020 mission. Sean receives three and a half pound all-metal cylinder right before today’s podcast. It’s another Sour Sunday this weekend at Free Will Brewing taproom in Perkasie. New Zealand’s prime minister Jacinda Ardern moves to ban all assault rifles and automatic or semi-automatic weapons. Just like that Vulcan and Moloch are thrown back to the underworld. #EggBoy becomes global hero for egging fascist Australian politician, Fraser Anning. And, predictably, liberal guardians of civility decide to discipline #EggBoy and “both-sides” the issue. Wisconsin Republican’s plan to strip power of incoming Democratic governor shot down as unconstitutional. The flooding in Nebraska, Missouri, and Iowa in the aftermath of the latest “Bomb Cyclone” should be shaking us awake about our climate future. We have less than 12 years now folks. Some union leaders from the AFL-CIO come out hard against the Green New Deal and right-wing and corporate media eats it up. PA Auditor General Eugene DePasquale hosted a public hearing on Penn State’s campus on the impacts of climate change on the state. DePasquale said, “Every time there’s a disaster in Pennsylvania, it’s a hit to the state’s taxpayers, as opposed to if we were able to do something beforehand to mitigate this.” A report will be forthcoming. Democratic Presidential hopeful former Colorado governor John Hickenlooper makes his primetime campaign debut by telling the world about the time he went to go see Deep Throat with this mom. Then in his recovery, he asks why women candidates aren’t asked if they plan on choosing a male running-mate. Bernie’s campaign makes history as campaign staffers form a union! Wooo. Bernie goes public with his support and uses the moment to advocate for more unionization across the country. Speaking of moms, Devin Nunes is not happy with his Twitter mom, so he’s going to sue her. And her cow. When Devin Nunes’ Cow tweeted, “Devin’s boots are full of manure. “He’s udder-ly worthless and it’s pasture time to mooove him to prison.” Beto O’Rourke brings in some big fundraising numbers, $6.1 million. He’s a little vague on the details, though. Pennsylvania House Republicans failed at fast-tracking an anti-union bill through the chamber this week and it was a call for a roll call vote that killed it, for now. SEIU Healthcare PA, PASNAP and the Coalition of Nurses were in the capitol on Wednesday to lobby for safe patient ratios in hospitals across the state PA Promise Rally in the Capitol next Wednesday. The PA Promise is legislation that would bring tuition-free college to the PA State System of Higher Education. The Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center held its annual Budget Summit this week. Vice President’s baby, the National Space Council, will be pushing hard to make the June 2020 launch date to return humans to the moon. Better bring the Preparation H because NASA researchers finding that the longer astronauts spend in space, the more like they are to reactivate the herpes virus. Galactic capitalists getting really excited about turning the eighth continent, the Moon, into a mining and rocket fuel operation. For real. Toyota is getting tapped by Japan’s Aerospace Exploration Agency to develop a big-ass, off-road lunar rover. As expected, Boeing is delaying the test launch of its crew capsule from April to August. It was the best Mob movie I’ve seen in a long time. Michael Cohen testified before Congress and it was large-popcorn-bucket-worthy. Like we’ve been saying for a couple of years now, the best way to understand the Trump administration is to read it as an organized crime story. Now it looks like we’re going to get Trump’s accountant, Allen Weisselberg, to testify after all. Cohen’s closing statement warned that if Trump loses the 2020 election, he will not allow for a peaceful transfer of power. Trump got Kim Jong Un-ed in Vietnam. Pramila Jayapal drops a major Medicare for All bill that - wait for it - is better than the plan advocated for by Bernie Sanders. The bill was drafted with nurses, doctors, disability rights advocates, advocates for the elderly, and organizations such as Public Citizen and the Center for Popular Democracy. This past Tuesday was a great day for Chicago socialists as 4 of the 5 DSA endorsed candidates won their election to Chicago’s city council. At least two other progressives also ousted established Democratic Party Machine candidates. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee enters the presidential race with an unabashed commitment to address the climate crisis. CPAC is underway just outside DC. All the tensions with Trump are nowhere to be found as the right-wing political conference fully embraces MAGA. And if you wanted to know if progressive/left policies are moving the needle, look no further than right-wing ex-Senator Rick Santorum who went to CPAC calling for paid family leave. Charter Appeals Board??? Say what? Imagine a state-controlled government panel that is specifically designed to overturn local school boards and favor charter schools. About 1,700 workers are on strike in Erie, PA as Wabtec, the new owners of the former GE locomotive plant, demanded up to 38% reduction in wages, mandatory overtime, expanded use of temps, and arbitrary scheduling. Bernie Sanders weighed in on the strike saying, "The American people are sick and tired of corporate America and their wealthy CEOs ripping off the working families of this country.” In These Times has called this the “biggest U.S. manufacturing strike in the Trump era.” Senator Bob Casey says he will be backing a $15/hour federal minimum wage bill, marking his continued political evolution. PA House GOP Candidate Frank Scavo is a Pizzagate conspiracy theorist who is running for an open house seat in Lackawanna County. It’s been a Democratic stronghold for decades but voted for Trump in 2016. Big Pharma, Big Greed. A PA woman used to be able to get for free medication for a rare neuromuscular disease. But thanks to BioMarin Pharmaceutical who recently gained exclusive rights to see the drug, she is facing a $375,000/year bill. Her case is one of the thousands like it that has been the subject of hearings in DC. Elections have consequences. State Senator Vincent Hughes wants to "take a data-driven approach to public policy to ensure that lawmakers are fully informed of the potential impacts of legislation on people living in poverty before they vote." In today’s Last Call, Space X set to test its first-ever Crew Dragon Spacecraft tomorrow if the weather continues to cooperate. The Crew Dragon is designed to bring astronauts to the International Space Station. If all goes well, this will be the first “crew-capable orbital spacecraft” to launch from the U.S. since the Obama administration scrapped the space shuttle program in 2011 in favor of contracting out missions to the ISS. Boeing, the other company tapped by NASA to fly crewed missions to the ISS has its own test launch set for April. Canada is the first country to join up to support NASA’s lunar gateway project. The Lunar Orbital Platform Gateway program will be a human-tended facility in orbit around the moon, kind of like a sister station to the ISS. This Sunday, Free Will Brewing will be celebrating the “Spirit of Mardi Gras” with a barrel aged tap takeover at the main brewery in Perkasie. Plus, a double can release tomorrow: Fresh King Cake - a No Boil White Ale brewed with 120 pounds of fresh ground pecans, orange, cinnamon, and vanilla. 7% ABV. Saturday can and draft release, March 2nd! 7 Course Red - just in time for St Patty's Day prep, it's Free Will's traditional Irish Red Ale, malt forward with notes of toffee, toasted bread, and dried fruit. Brewed with a touch of roasted barley and carared for additional color and a beautiful tan head.
National Climate Assessment dropped like a bomb the day after Thanksgiving. Despite Trump admin attempts to bury the report under the weight of Black Friday shopping deals. The report paints a devastating picture of our future including a 10% drop in the U.S. economy. Trump says he doesn’t believe it. Trump gives a barely intelligible interview to the Washington Post revealing what his gut says about climate change and a host of other issues. The Congressional Progressive Caucus is at its largest ever and now they are demanding important committee positions in order to support Nancy Pelosi for House Speaker. David Dayen lays out the argument for supporting Pelosi. On the other hand, Chuck Schumer said that Democrats are willing to give $1.6 billion to Trump for the border wall in order to avert a government shutdown. Here’s a noble idea, how about ZERO dollars for Trump’s racist border wall? Sinclair Media forces nearly 200 of its affiliates to run a segment defending the use of tear gas on migrant children and families. Meanwhile, the Trump administration waived safety checks for all staff working at the nation’s largest detention camp for migrant children. That camp keeps growing by the way. 2,324 migrant kids and counting. Michael Cohen pleads guilty and implicates Trump further when it comes to the Russia investigation. Looks like Putin may have been getting a $50 million floor of a Moscow Trump Tower had the deal gone through. Facebook scandals continue to grow as new revelations that Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg ordered staff to do oppo research on George Soros after he criticized FB and Google and other tech giants at the World Economic Forum earlier this year. Facebook then pushed out critical stories to reporters about Soros’s funding of American advocacy groups critical of FB. Rider University in New Jersey says no way to Chick-fil-A. Given the restaurant chain’s anti-LGBTQ record, Rider officials say Chick-fil-A is not faithful to the university’s values of inclusiveness. A Chinese researcher claims to have helped make the world’s first genetically modified babies. And, Ivanka Trump found to be sending emails from a non-government server. Conservative base starts chants of “Lock Her Up…” Not. Daryl Metcalfe is looking for some new committee positions. What will it be? Will it be House Judiciary committee chair or House Education committee chair? The ever-so-swanky PA Society is this weekend and it was launched with a reception hosted by Christine Toretti, who is a Trustee to the Scaife Foundation and Trump’s Ambassador to Malta. This high-end event was hosted at Club Macanudo. Senate Republicans are threatening to not seat Lindsey Williams because of a potential resident. In today’s Last Call, it was a big week in Space News. The InSight Lander successfully touched down on Mars and prepares for several years of scientific study of the interior of the Red Planet. NASA selected nine companies to be eligible for future contracts to deliver payloads to the surface of the moon. The news had Mike Pence all tingly in the panties and galactic capitalists licking their chops at the prospects of colonizIng the new frontier. Time is running out for the Space Force. Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan will meet with Mike Pence to try and ready legislation to drop a legislative proposal in December. And, it’s 2001 a Space Odyssey all over again as the International Space Station “wakes up” its first onboard AI called CIMON. Let’s hope this has a better ending. Kevin is fighting a cold at home. No worries because US bosses now earn 312 times the average workers salary, according to a new report from the Economic Policy Institute. Unite the Right Part Two flops. Jason Kessler and 20 to 30 white nationalists showed up for the rally outside of the white house and were vastly outnumbered by anti-fascist counter-protesters. The Metro Transit Authority caved and still gave Jason Kessler and his white nationalist friends a private train car. "Dispy Dan" Phillips drops by the West Virginian tavern the gang seems to find themselves in to talk bad about niceness. Is it wrong to be mean in conservative Evangelicalism? Is niceness the highest calling for a Christian? It's proposed as the end-all of Christian life, but is this really the case? Writing as a "pyro-maniac" for years, Dan has become something of an expert in Evangelical niceness. Listen to Dan and the crew make even more enemies and dig themselves even further in.
