When Mac first opens his classroom copy of Jane Yolen's The Devil's Arithmetic and finds some words blacked out, he thinks it must be a mistake. But then when he and his friends discover what the missing words are, he's outraged. Someone in his school is trying to prevent kids from reading the full story. But who? Even though his unreliable dad tells him to not get so emotional about a book (or anything else), Mac has been raised by his mom and grandad to call out things that are wrong. He and his friends head to the principal's office to protest the censorship... but her response doesn't take them seriously. So many adults want Mac to keep his words to himself. Mac's about to see the power of letting them out. Amy Sarig King writes this story from real life experience. Jane Yolen's The Devil's Arithmetic was censored in her local elementary school in the exact way as it's described in her novel. After buying an uncensored copy at her local independent bookstore, she went to the principal to fix the problem, but was shrugged off as if she were crazy to think that censorship is wrong.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Hello, hi! Today's episode is a new kind of format, we're doing “Medium Effort Advice”. One listener asked me on instagram: “How do I handle the problem of doing too much? Because I'm going too many things,  I end up not doing them well or even to completion. This episode is for you if you too are struggling with all.the.things this fall, and you want a bit of relief!   Episode Summary Check in:  The weekend did not go as planed but as the month of September closes out, I'll look back on what I enjoyed about the month, and I look ahead to what I'm anticipating being fun and fulfilling in October Today's listener asks a question (sent on IG) about how to address the problem of doing too many things and not doing any of them well or to completion. High effort problem solving: the high effort approach sees this with regret from the past, focused on allll those things that were never finished. This approach tries to solve the problem by putting it on lock in order to achieve a more ideal future state - planners, systems and rules. This approach also sees optimizing your time and maximizing productivity as “self-care” Low effort problem solving: This approach sees the problem as very overwhelming but impossible to change. They also regret the past, but even more so they dread the future as this cycle keeps repeating itself. Because this person never says no to new things, they may be getting something out of the problem some kind of positive feedback for taking on more and more.  Medium Effort problem solving: Instead of the ideal future, the regretful past, or the dreaded future what if we think about our resourceful past? *these 4 ideas are from the Dialectical Orientation Quadrant studied and published by Dr. Haesun Moon (see resources). Medium effort notes the limiting belief inherent in the question “I never do things well” or “I never finish things properly. Addressing this limiting belief helps us take action in a way that questions the limiting belief and instead confronts it with evidence from our resourceful past that proves actually, we do many things well, and we have seen lots of opportunities through to completion. Mindful Fun: In order to further help solidify your new beliefs about this problem I give the listener an “assignment” to create a project hall of fame for past projects that have gone well, AND instructions to conduct “closing ceremonies” for all of their unfinished business, so they can gain the permission they need to stop pursuing those undone things that are bogging them down.   A Moment of Gratitude: Did you know about Banned Book Week? (Sept 22-28) I share my gratitude for Libraries and all they do to maintain accessibility to knowledge and to fight against forces that would limit our agency and autonomy by controlling access information and artistic expression.   Other Resources Mentioned: Coaching A to Z: The Extraordinary Use of Ordinary Words by Dr. Haesun Moon   Other Episodes you might like: Episode 109: Medium Lady Unfiltered - Three Truths about Motherhood Content on Instagram and TikTok Episode 89: Everyday Manifesting with Diana Alexander Rane Medium Lady Reads Episode 27 - Escape and Put Your Face in a Book Connect with Erin: Instagram: @medium.lady Email: mediumladytalks@gmail.com  Explore more book-related content on "Medium Lady Reads." - link to Spotify Instagram: @mediumladyreads

In today's episode of the Parents' Rights Podcast, the K-12 education landscape in the U.S. is brought into focus. The story starts with a troubling event at a Tigard-Tualatin school where a boy attacked a girl. This incident stirs up a debate: some believe schools are muddling the waters by teaching about many genders and ignoring basic biology. Switching scenes, we hear about the "Banned Book Week" by the American Library Association, a movement against hiding books in schools and libraries.Over in Wisconsin, parents have a win. A legal decision says schools can't let students change their gender identity without telling their folks. In Ohio, a different kind of battle rages. Some students believe "Anti-Harassment" rules are silencing their voices and clashing with their beliefs. The podcast also gives us a peek into the changing world of public schools. The big bosses (like teachers' unions) are gaining power, and everyday folks, especially parents, feel left out. But not all hope is lost! The episode ends with a chat with Jackie Mendez from Evington, Virginia. She's a local hero, keeping a close eye on her school board and reminding us that change often starts from the ground up. Through these stories, the podcast paints a picture of the challenges and triumphs in today's U.S. schools.Jackie talks with Suzanne about her effort to propose November as Parents' Rights in Education Month and about her efforts to run for her local School Board.  To learn more about JACKIE MENDEZ, please visit her campaign website at jmendez.org.Support the showDONATE TODAY!www.ParentsRightsInEducation.com

We love to cite our sources: PINJ and the Pittsburgh Independent have been doing great reporting about the plan to renovate Shuman and County Council's impending lawsuit  County Executive Rich Fitzgerald sued Council previously for passing an increase in the minimum wage for county workers, which he said he supports, but not in this manner Rollout of the new Covid booster has had issues nationwide, including insurance denials and canceled appointments One health and policy expert explained one cause for NPR: This is the first year the vaccine is being commercialized One person looking for the booster in Miami said it seems like the American health care system is ”circling the drain”  Pittsburgh native Judith Krug was a banned books crusader before her death in 2009 The Washington Post analyzed book challenges nationwide and found the majority were filed by just 11 people The latest report from PEN America, which tracks book bans, found that almost 75% of reported book bans in the last school year were connected to organized efforts, mainly from advocacy groups, elected officials, or enacted legislation Lancaster Online reported on the legislation around book bans in PA, including a proposed bill to ban book bans at libraries and public schools and another bill that would require schools to notify parents about "sexually explicit content" in curriculums Our own Mallory Falk did a deep dive on an attempted book ban in Central York for WHYY's Schooled podcast last year, and and the Inky looked at where Pennsylvania ranks with book bans nationwide Check out the Carnegie Library's plans for Banned Book Week, including the 30 Books in 30 Minutes event online and in person Oct. 7 at 10:30 a.m. Want some more Pittsburgh news?  Sign up for our daily morning Hey Pittsburgh newsletter. Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., has been indicted on federal corruption charges. He is accused of accepting bribes and influencing an arms deal with Egypt, among other things. Brent Johnson of the New Jersey Star-Ledger tells us more. And, NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission capsule contains an 8.8-ounce asteroid sample that could help scientists worldwide learn more about the solar system's origins. We speak to Dani Mendoza DellaGiustina, the deputy principal investigator for the mission. Then, the American Library Association has dubbed next week, Oct. 1 through Oct. 7, as Banned Book Week, a time to celebrate reading and fight censorship. One author targeted by book banning is Pulitzer Prize winner Art Spiegelman, who wrote the graphic novel "Maus" as a memoir of his family's experiences during the time of Nazi Germany. Spiegelman talks about the potent irony of having a book about the rise of the Nazis being banned.

Last week, New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in anticipation of a severe blizzard to impact the state and the following few days brought with it a historic winter storm that paralyzed the city of Buffalo, bringing four feet of snow, freezing temperatures and ultimately claiming over thirty lives so far. As the city works to recover from this disaster, most roads remain unusable, and many in Buffalo have been facing dangerous conditions without power or access to food. Fox Weather Correspondent Max Gorden is on the ground in Buffalo, New York, and joins to explain the devastating impact this winter storm has had on the city, how the blizzard caught many people in Buffalo off guard and unprepared, and how one severe weather event was able to cause travel advisories for 60 percent of Americans across the country.   This past year saw an increased discussion of parental rights and with that came a lively debate surrounding the banning of books that students are reading in school. These ban requests have risen in popularity due to parent advocacy groups calling for stricter standards, while some educators are decrying the crackdown on certain literature as harmful censorship. In September 2022, during ‘Banned Book Week' the Rundown spoke to an advocate on each side of the issue. Today on the Rundown, we look back at that conversation from September 21st with Moms For Liberty Co-Founder Tina Descovich and Director of The American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom Deborah Caldwell-Stone about the heightened focus on book banning this year.    Plus, commentary by National Security Expert, Dr. Rebecca Grant.  Learn more about your ad choices. On this week's show, I welcome Sharon Ward to the show. Sharon is the Senior Policy Advisor for the Education Law Center, a statewide nonprofit legal services and advocacy organization that works to secure quality education for Pennsylvania children with an emphasis on students who are most underserved. She has worked for 30 years, inside and outside of government, to secure quality schools, affordable health care, and people-serving budget priorities and to empower advocates to work for economic and social justice. We'll be talking about the ongoing attempts by school boards across the country to ban books, limit teachers' ability to provide welcoming environments to LGBTQ students, and enact extremist agendas in our schools. Last week the ACLU of PA filed a lawsuit against Central Bucks School District for creating a hostile environment for LGBTQ students and the Pennridge School District seems like it wants a lawsuit of its own as it bans books, limits expression, and demands schools be stripped of Pride flags. We'll talk with Sharon Ward about the work of the Education Law Center in defending the rights of ALL students and the legal hot water Bucks County Schools find themselves in. Sharon served two terms on the Albany, NY City Council, directed Governor Tom Wolf's Budget Office and led a government-wide transformation initiative to help state agencies use technology, data, collaboration, and social policy innovation to deliver better and quicker services to Pennsylvanians. She is the founding director of the Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center; Pennsylvania's premier progressive policy think tank and led the fight for an equitable state tax system. She has served as an advisor on state legislation, policy, and advocacy for the School District of Philadelphia, the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit, the Impact Project, Education Voters of Pennsylvania, the Voter Project, and the Keystone Research Center. Hurricane Ian devastates Florida and is set to make landfall again this afternoon - this time in South Carolina as a category 1 storm.  At least 19 people are currently reported dead in Florida, but the numbers are expected to rise considerably. As one council member in Fort Myers Beach - one of the areas hit worst by Ian - put it, “90% of the island is pretty much gone.”  Biden's Department of Education quietly changes rules for some student loan borrowers who were initially promised relief under the recently announced student loan forgiveness program. Fearing Republican lawsuits and Republican talking points, Biden's plan will no longer allow borrowers with privately held federal student loans to consolidate those loans into Direct Loans to qualify for the $10,000 - $20,000 debt cancellation.  The Dallas Morning News reports on a right-wing takeover of North Texas schools that may signal a new chapter in the National Republican playbook to expand their power. And, it might sound familiar to listeners of this show.  An excellent new report by Aly Shaw from the grassroots watchdog group, LittleSis, tracks the roll that PA-based billionaire Jeffery Yass has played in fueling Pennsylvania's right-wing machine.  On Wednesday, Pennridge School Board president, Joan Cullen, was named the worst person in the world by Keith Olberman on his podcast after Pennridge High School banned Banned Books Week displays - ending a 15 year tradition taking part in the annual national awareness campaign.  The Pennridge School District administration ordered teachers to remove any “advocacy materials” from their classrooms by next week. The School Board even suspended its own policies to rush the vote. According to reporting in the Philadelphia Inquirer, “advocacy materials” includes LGBTQ pride materials; crosses and other religious symbols; political party symbols; and, even images like the Ukrainian flag signaling support for Ukrainians after the Russian invasion. How long do you think it will take for right-wing religious groups to file their well-funded lawsuits? In response to the move, the Pennridge Education Association released a rather bland, cookie-cutter statement saying, “While new policies may present changes throughout Pennridge School District, our members - the teachers, nurses, counselors, librarians, social workers, and psychologists who server Pennridge students - remain steadfast in our mission of ensuring our students feel welcomed, valued, and encouraged to excel as learners. Ingenuity, the Mars helicopter, just completed its 33rd flight. The original mission - to see if powered-air flight was even possible - was only expected to last about a month with a handful of test flights. Instead, Ingenuity has become an exploratory companion of the Perseverance rover.  NASA's Juno spacecraft just sent back some amazing pictures of Jupiter's ice-encrusted ocean moon, Europa.  NASA's DART mission is a success.

OATH KEEPERS COULD SCREW TRUMP A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Keep your eye on the trial of Stewart Rhodes and the Oath Keepers as jury selection continues today. Rhodes' defense is: he and his terrorists were acting on what were to be legal orders from Trump as President. So...they just guessed that would be the case? They assumed? THEY HAD TO HAVE BEEN TOLD. Told? By whom? What will they say in their own defense and who will testify to what communications or meetings or conspiracies? They are on trial for Seditious Conspiracy and perhaps decades in jail and who they blame could be close to Trump - or Trump himself. (5:07) Other Oath Keepers have already flipped and implicated Roger Stone, Stop The Steal, and The Proud Boys (7:05) And ex-Trump physician, Congressman Ronny Jackson, who supposedly reached out to Stewart Rhodes for protection during the attempted coup.  B-Block (15:16) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Jinxie in Brooklyn (16:39) IN SPORTS: Sure they clinched their division, but what about Aaron Judge's home run drought? And now that the NFL has cancelled its All-Star Game will the other leagues follow suit? (20:32) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The book banners of Bucks County PA taking it an extra yard, the University of Idaho, and the DeSantis appointee who just quit after a KKK photo surfaced, compete for honors (24:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: In the world of the movie "Network" it was 47 years ago this week that things began to go off the rails for Howard Beale, Max Schumacher, Diana Christensen, and the UBS Evening News. For my money, it's the greatest movie of all time - and especially the most prophetic. This week's episode is a little late because we wanted to drop it during Banned Book week! So happy Banned Book Week! Please go read some books that have been challenged or banned, particularly if you can find one you haven't read before, or who doesn't have a terribly horrible TERF-y author!  This week we did just that, as we invited on Frankie (MJ) Bradley-Lestrange to talk about Alanna, The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce! We discussed why these books were challenged, whether we agree with this, and how much authors can and should grow and change in their writing!  Judging Book Covers Podcast stands with the Black Lives Matter movement, and if you are looking for black owned bookshops, please check out these links:  50 in 50 Black Owned Bookstores A More Current List  Find us on the web: Twitter | Facebook  | Instagram | Email: judgingcoverspodcast@gmail.com Find our hosts: Meghan's Twitter | Stephanie's Instagram And our Guest:  MJ's Twitter | Archives of the Dragon Network Information:  Certain POV Network | Discord Link |

Banned Book Week starts on the 27th this year, to celebrate we're talking about two recent books that have been challenged and banned multiple times. Rachael's book was published in 2007, and was the most challenged book of 2017. The book is centered around suicide, so we understand why people may think it glorified suicide, but we believe it's too important of a story to banned. Suicide TW: If you want to skip this book, start at 33:00 Kristia's book was published in 2017 and spent the first two years in the top ten banned books. It's often challenged and banned due to it's "vulgar language," "racially-insensitive language," and for "being anti-police." This story is also too important to be banned, these books should be read and discussed by students so they can gain a better understanding of these tough topics. Books Discussed: Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas September is also Suicide Prevention Month if you are struggling, know you are not alone. Could you imagine the library without Toni Morrison, Kurt Vonnegut, Mark Twain, or Captain Underpants? We can't imagine it either. In this week's episode we bridge a more serious topic concerning some of the books that we love and why people would want those books banned. Bring your ears and contemplate with us this interesting phenomenon called Banning Books. We will discuss what makes a book “banned” in the United States, cover the Top 10 Banned books of 2019, and see what makes a book banned in other parts of the world. Email us at offthebooks@khcpl.org with your questions and comments on this important topic and stop by the library to see our Banned Book Display!
